Network security change to WPA2 won't take

Hi all, I am getting a very low airport signal strength and am concerned other neighbors are using my connection. I am using a mac mini OS 10.4.11 with a wireless Belkin54g 802.11g router. In system pref. I noticed that there seems to be "none" security on the network, and when I try to add a WPA2 password for more security, it accepts the changes. However, when I then try to connect to my network, it asks if I want to join the "belkin54g" -which is mine, and it connects automatically without asking for the password I created. Furthermore, I can see that the security setting changes when I connect from WPA2 personal to "none" again. How can I simply add security to this network and be confident that others without the password can't join?
Thanks for any help on this.
Joe

In addition to Fortuny's correct advice, I'd suggest giving your router a distinctive name, so that it is easier to recognize as being your own.
The low signal strength would normally not be an indication of your router being used by others. You might need to change the channel number of your router so that it is not trying to use the same band as the other routers in your neighborhood. Normally you need to get 3 channel numbers away from other users to minimize interference.
You can use this program:
http://istumbler.net/
to determine which channels are being used by routers in your immediate neighborhood.

  • Officejet 6000 wireless and WPA2-Enterprise network security

I own an Officejet 6000 wireless printer. The manual says that it should be compatible with a wireless network with WPA2-Enterprise network security but when setting up the connection (I am using a macbook and am setting the printer up via usb connection) the newtork is listed but the security type is "unsupported." For whatever its worth it is listed 5 or 6 times but probably thats a different issue.
I can still select the right network but it only asks for a security key, but my network security requires a log-in name and password.
What can I do to get my printer connected to the network?

I get the feeling that most of the people replying here don't know the difference between WPA2-Personal and WPA2-Enterprise.
    Personal has a passkey.
Enterprise uses both a username and password, usually in conjunction with a Radius server (802.1X athentication).
What we've had to do solve this problem is create a second SSID on the network that authenticates on WPA2-Personal. We use a really long password to secure the network, one that I will never be able to memorize in my lifetime.
All we can hope for is that these enterprise-level vendors will, perhaps, gain a greater understanding of wireless authentication processes and the needs of actual enterprise customers who at least a percieved need for wireless printer capabilities. It used to be that customer was always right, though. Perhaps those days are gone...
The other problem that probably ought to be addressed on consumer end is the fact that multicast tools that make AirPrint work (such as Bonjour), are being blocked from crossing between your wired and wireless networks, perhaps by the wireless controller or due to inefficient routing hierarchy or NAT/PAT issues. Solve this issue and you won't have a need for wireless printers.

You really should change both the wireless network name and password to avoid potential conflicts with the old and new settings.
Suggest you give that a try.

  • Wireless Network Password won't "take"

I can't figure out why the WEP Password that I'm trying to set for our Airport connection won't "take." I enter in the password, Apply .... in Network Preferences, but it doesn't seem to be working, ie. my wireless connection doesn't show a "lock" next to it. I use to have one ... but somewhere along the line of installing 10.6 I lost it.
    I'm using a D-Link DIR-615 router ... firmware is updated.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If you have problems restoring (if that is necessary) the iPhone
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPhone fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If you updated your existing account then try logging out of it on the iPad by tapping on the id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the iPad. If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can download updates to its apps.

  • How to Make Wirless Network SECURE

I am running my desktop hard line to a comcast modem which runs XP Pro. My Laptop which is running Vista is set up wireless via the WRT54GS Linksys Router.
The wireless network is running great but it is identified as UNSECURED!
After three 30 minute waits last night, 2 disconnects when I was not understanding them ( not a computer whiz but I do ok) and 1 live chat tech that copy and pasted the directions on how to set it up but not how to make it secure and then a quick disconnect    .
Can anyone tell me exactly HOW TO MAKE THIS NETWORK SECURED and WHAT computer shall I use to perform this?
Thank you for any help you can give me,

**No, that secures your router's wireless settings.
    or
Is this the only method to secure the network?
With some investigation I can find have found the following:
If I right click on my Network Icon in my tool bar and then click Connect to Network and then right click on the Network and right click Properties I get a box with the following:
Tab for connection and a tab for security with pull down bars which can be changed...
    1) Security Types -No Authentication (open), shared, wpa2 personal, wpa personal, wpa2 enterprise, wpa enterprise and 802.1x
    2) Encryption Types -WEP
Current settings on my laptop Linksys wireless network security is
    Security Type- OPEN
    Encryption- NONE
sBatch when I perform the WPA on my desktop my laptop must be off or not on the network correct?
Doesn't matter, once you change the security settings onthe router, you will be prompted for the settings to reconnect to it.
Has anyone found the LinkSys hyperlink for setting the WRT54GS router as SECURED?
Define "secured".  Wired, only physical connection have access.
Wireless, once you add WPA or WEP (WPA is better) it's secured.

  • How to edit etc/apache2/httpd.conf? Pico won't take my password. :(

How to edit etc/apache2/httpd.conf? Pica won't take my password.
I can navigate to the pico prompt in terminal ... but when it asks for pw, I try to type, the cursor just blinks, doesn't move, nothing.
But if there's another way to edit this file, I'll try.
Just want to uncomment the line about php5 module.

I like the tutorial, but yeah you are right, it's sudo, not pico that's not taking my pw. I can sudo pico or sudo vi, either way it asks me for my password but then the cursor doesn't respond to my typing.
I'm used to vi. You use control keys to navigate and make changes. It has two modes, command and insert. In command mode, to delete the '#' character, for example, move the cursor to '#' and type 'x' to delete it. Type 'i' to enter insert mode and add new text. Press 'esc' to go back to command mode.
There are numerous ways to save and quit. Usually you type 'ZZ' to save and quit. On some of these system files, their permissions are too restrictive for that. You have to do it the hard way. Type ':w!' to save. The 'w' is for "write" and the '!' is to force a write on a read-only. Then you can quit with "q!'.
I've never edited an administrative file with pico.
I can't even chmod to give myself rights to write to httpd.conf . "Operation not permitted."
Don't try that. Many tools will rightfully refuse to even launch if they detect that their administrative config files have been incorrectly modified.
internet chatter seems to suggest this 10.7.x is, like, super duper secure.  And I'm new to macs.  I'm logged in as admin, I have all the permissions I can find myself via finder ... but maybe there's a double-secret admin ...
There is, it is "sudo". Only an admin user has the ability to use sudo to gain root permissions.

Someone recently noted a problem staying logged on the Huffington Post since it became connected with AOL. The workaround for that is to change your connection setting here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network
Click the "Settings" button and choose either "No Proxy" or "Use System Settings" option, and OK the change.
Not sure whether Washington Post could be affected by that same setting.
In reviewing your extensions, I'm puzzled that you have both DoNotTrackMe and SavvyConnect. The first one seems to aggressively block certain communications with websites (potentially affecting functionality) while the second one seems to report on your browsing habits (they better pay well is all I can say). Have you tried disabling both of those to see whether that has any effect?

  • TC in a WDS network - Security Settings?!

    Hello everyone,
I have successfully connected the TC as repeater to a Fritz!Box WDS network. However, this works only if I do not activate any wireless security. The setup is like this:
    Fritz!Box
    - Fritz!Box acts as base with internet connection and I have WDS activated
    - In the Fritz!Box setup, the MAC address of the TC is entered
    - No encryption of the repeater-connection (this exactly is the problem, but more on that later)
    Time Capsule:
    - The TC is set up to "Participate in a WDS network"
    - The Fritz!Box is entered as base for the "WDS remote" option in the TC
    - The SSID of the TC is set randomly (does not change if I enter the same SSID)
    - Also in the 'Wireless' tab of the airport utility, I have entered no encription
As a start (and proof of concept), this works nicely. I can connect to the TC network and have a working internet connection. However, I would appreciate not having a wide-open wireless with my personal data in my apartment. So I tried changing the encryption of the Fritz!Box WDS connection (WPA or WPA2), changed the Wireless Security option of the TC (set both to the same, set both to be different)... No matter what I do, I end up being able to ping the TC, but not to the Fritz!Box and the internet connection is lost.
What is the standard way to set up a WDS network with a router and a TC? Is the "Wireless Security" option in the 'Wireless' Tab the one where I should enter the password of the WDS router? As you can see, I am a little confused to where I should enter the encryption, etc. Could someone please clarify?
Maybe a final hint: I read online that the encryption should be set to WEP (better than nothing I thought), but the TC does only give the security options "WPA/WPA2 Personal" or "WPA2 Personal" and not the option of WEP security. How can this be?!
I have been googling, reading and trying for quite some time now, but I do not seem to get this to work properly, so maybe one of you might have the answer? Any help is highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, I am going nuts waiting for the TC to restart every second minute

launch airport utility and select +manual setup+ for your TC. go to the wireless tab and option-click on the +wireless security+ pop-up menu. you should now see the option for WEP.

You can probably change the ID in the "iTunes and App stores" settings on the iPad....click on the wrong account ID , select sign out, then log in with your own ID, I have not done this but I think it works.....
but I would be more inclined to to the factory reset and start afresh.

  • Sprint Won't Take My Money

They won't take it!  I'll be headed to purchase an iPhone tomorrow, not because it's the phone I want, but because it's the only phone I can get.
    Here's the situation:
I'm a young guy, and I've been using a phone on my parents family plan for years.  It was time to sign up for a plan of my own and I figured why not grab the amazing Palm Pre at the same time?  So I went to a Sprint store, filled out the paperwork, and everything seemed fine.  Then I told them I wanted to use the phone number on my parents plan.  They informed me that I would never get a Palm Pre with that phone number for the discounted price until my parents contract expired.
This wasn't an attempt to "upgrade early."  My parents signed a contract for 2 lines, a received 1 free phone for doing so.  They would keep these lines active and honor that contract in full.  I wasn't trying to "split" off one line into a new account before the contract expired and still qualify for the Palm Pre for $200.  I just wanted my old number on my new line and the people that currently had the number, my parents, had no problem with this.
I begged and pleaded with Sprint to let me own your phone.  They agree that I qualify for the discount and were ready to give it to me.  I passed their credit check.  I had authorization from the account holder, standing right beside me, to give me that phone number.  They just wouldn't do it.
The only way they'll let me have both the phone and the number is if my Parents cancel their contract early.  Or, if I pay the full price of the phone.  They would rather lose me as a customer for life and 2 other 10-year customers along with me, rather than change a phone number.
This is a company you have partenered with to make money literally refusing to sell your phone to me.  I can't believe that this was the intent of your arrangement with Sprint.
I hope someone considers experiences like mine when you decide whether to open up the phone to other carriers.
Unfortunately, I'll be stuck on th front end of an AT&T contract with a new iPhone in my pocket by the time that comes to pass :/
    Sorry Palm, I tried!
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

I've read that Sprint has some customer support specialists whose job it is to retain good customers, and they can "fix" situations that appear hopeless in the store. I don't remember reading how you reach the retentions department, but you Google around, you might find the answer to that. Whatever you decide, enjoy the experience of getting your own bill.

Need help on this to go-head on this.

    Hi,
you have a weaker domain security overall. "
    LM Hash Generation
The algorithm introduces several weaknesses that attackers can exploit. First, all lowercase characters are set to uppercase, reducing the number of possible characters. Second, it splits a long, strong, password into two seven-character chunks.
Both the LM and NTLM protocols operate essentially the same way; the only difference is the password hash.
