Network services do not respond until local user logs in!

My OS X Server install will not respond to ANY outside network requests (web, server admin, VNC, etc.) until I physically log in a user at the system itself (i.e. using the attached keyboard, mouse and monitor attached to the system.)
Obviously this is an issue after reboots etc. Thanks for any ideas.

I'm having a similar problem. VNC and server monitor don't work for me without physically logging in either. As you mentioned, this certainly is an issue with reboots.
I would recommend doing the version 10.5.6 combo update however, as it did seem to solve some of my other problems.

    Dear SapService,
    I've installed a BI7.0 (ABAP only) instance on cluster with :
    windows 2003 x64 SP2
    SQL server 2005 x64 SP2
    WAS 7.00 kernel 80
    *the service runs with domain user.
    I've upgraded to kernel 114 (latest). After the upgrade the ASCS service doesn't start. It throws error:
    "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control
    request in a timely fashion"
    To solve this problem I've tried:
    -go back to kernel 80 but I still get the same error.
    -start the service manually on the second node. Still same error.
    -restart the two servers and try again to start the service on the
    nodes.
    Any ideas ?

    You can't do anything, you should just wait.

    I'm getting a similar error over here. Sporadically some sites won't load specifically in Safari; they open just fine in Opera, Firefox and Camino though. This is really annoying.
    It's pretty clear it's nothing network related…

  • Error 2186: The service is not responding to the control function

    <P>
    This occurs because the system does not have enough remaining memory to

    The limit can be raised, but doing so requires changing registry entries to

    The best solution is to limit the application connector instances to seven

    For instance, you may make a change from 0 (zero) to 1 (one):

    Nvd,
    I'm sorry to hear about the problems that you are running into with your DAQCard. I can understand your frustration with the errors that you are seeing. You mention that you have tried to do some troubleshooting, I was wondering if you have tried all the troubleshooting techniques listed in this KnowledgeBase:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/DCFCDB240788F8D486256D6A00834D80?OpenDocument
    If you have tried all of those things, I would suggest one additional thing to try. I would suggest updating your NI-DAQ drivers to version 7.0. These drivers are the newest versions of our Data Acquisition Drivers, and can be downloaded from our website here:

    If you have tried all of the above troubleshooting options, please post a detailed description of what you have tried. This may help to clarify what is going wrong.

    sendmail daemon is not running on this system but my understanding is that sendmail is not required. I need mail to work only for local users to receive emails for failed cron jobs etc, it is not required for this system to send or receive emails to/from outside world.
    Can someone guide or point in right direction to fix mail functionlality for local users?

    Actually, with recent versions of sendmail, you do need sendmail running to be able to send mail.
    You never used to, but since they made sendmail no longer setuid root, you do.
    Sendmail has essentially been split into 2 daemons a local queue runner with handles sending sent by local users.
    And a listener daemon with listens for remote connections.
    If you want to be able to send mails but not have sendmail listening, you have a couple of options.
    You can either run only the local queue runner and not run the listener. In this case you have to configure the local queue runner to send mails onto a external mail host for processing. This requires editing /etc/mail/submit.cf
    Alternately, you need to configure the local listener to only bind to the localhost port so it can't be contacted from external sources.
    This requires editing sendmail.mc and regenerating a new sendmail.cf
    I tend to favour the latter option as the former limits your ability to do things like local aliases of root: [email protected] to send all your root mail to a central account.
    This is the sendmail.mc you will need

  • OS X wifi not working until switch users

    My OS X wifi does not work until I switch users. This occurs very intermittently and does not go away until I switch to another user account. I tried ping, nslookup, and dig with terminal. The ping returned "unknown host." The NSLookup does not give any output and neither does dig.
    I have tried to flush the DNS cache also but that did not work either. The problem only occurs on that single user account, and does not move to any other account.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Retrieving Local User Logged In to Oracle Apps

    Hi,
    I have a report that issues Employee Payslips. I need to modify it so the user submitting the request will only be able to view his/her payslip.
    I have the following bit of code:
    SELECT distinct user_id
    FROM v$session vs, v$process vp, fnd_logins fl
    WHERE vp.addr = vs.paddr
      AND fl.spid = vs.process
      AND vs.sid=(select distinct sid from v$mystat)I also tried linking V$SESSION, V$PROCESS, and FND_CONCURRENT_REQUESTS using oracle_process_id and oracle_session_id.
    The problem is neither is returning any results. When linking V$SESSION and V$PROCESS alone, I get one record, which is what I need. But upon adding FND_LOGINS to the equation, no records are retrieved.
    So my question is, is there another way to be able to get the User_ID (that can be linked in FND_USER) of the session? I've looked up previous threads and articles but none of the solutions worked.
    Thanks.

    The main idea of the report is that a user logs into Oracle Applications and submits a request. The code in the report linked to this request has to get the username that the user logged in with and use it to retrieve only information that are related to that user.
    When taking the record with SID from sys_context, the data in V$SESSION are actually related to the server not the user so they're the same for all users.
    Executing the following query:
    select username, osuer, machine, user#
    from v$session
    where SID = sys_context('USERENV', SID);Returns the following:
    USERNAME: APPS
    OSUSER: applqa

  • Transported Roles not Visible for the User Log-in

    I have three roles in the development system.  These roles show up in the top level navigation for the users in the dev system.  All these roles and the underlying BSPs are transported to QA successfully.  I could assign them to users without any problems, but when the users log-in they can not see any of these roles at the top level navigation (In fact, they just get a blank screen).  "Entry Point" setting and "Sort Priority" is maintained for all the three roles.
    As a test, I created a new role with the same BSP links in QA itself and assigned it to the users.  This shows up in the top level navigation for the users.  I am wondering what's wrong with the transported roles!  If someone could help me here that would be great and I will assign points to helpful replies.  I have a very basic knowledge in portal.

    After applying SP12 in the portal landscape (EP 6.0), the role transports only work in our test environment, but not in production.  Even the manual corrections suggested in OSS note 1002832 didn't help.  I can preview all the iviews in the roles with my user id (admin id), but as soon as I log-in with the end user id nothing shows up [Not even the top level navigation tabs show up].  The following is the portal authorization methodology I chose.
    1. I assign users to the user groups
    2. I assign user groups to the roles
    I want to emphasize that all is well in our test environment, it is the production environment that shows inconsistency.  Let me know if anyone has any pointers.

  • Can recieve mail but not relayed to local users, can't send mail,

    I am working on setting up a home server for web and email. I have server 10.2 and I can get the web working fine but the mail is giving me fits. The computer is behind by router on my private network. I have a domain name that is set for my router and it forwards all requests to the server. Have done that before with linux. I have set the computers network name to be the same as the domain name(probably a mistake). I can get the mail to be accepted by the server but then it gives a no user error when transfering to the local host for delivery. The only way I can edit using any of the tools is to type in the IP number and not the name.
    Should I have named it something like server.domain.com? It is not too far along to reformat and start over. How do you change the network name? Is the network name my problem? I have tried messing with the DNS but it is not as easy and it sounds for 10.2 as in later versions.
    Any suggetions would be helpful.

    It's been too long since I've seen 10.2 to give you tips on it's mail config....
    The main issue you may have is that your router probably doesn't support loopback. This page has a good explanation:
    http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/loopback_connections.html
    You can use /etc/hosts as described in the article if the machines stay in the office. Another solution is to change your router to one which does support loopback.

  • Pan & zoom overlay will not pan until after user has zoomed in or out

    I've been trying to lay out a large table of data so that when you first see the page, it's zoomed right out.  It's just an imported png image, with its own frame defining over what area of the screen it should be visible, and then set to pan & zoom mode using the overlay creator).
    In this initial state, the width of the image matches that of the frame; only the  bottom part of the image is hidden by being outside the frame.
    So it needs to be able to pan at any time regardless of the zoom level, so that a user can see all the content.  But what's happening is that it refuses to respond to any swipe (i.e. pan) gestures until you have first zoomed in or out to some extent.  Once you've done that the panning works perfectly in all directions.
    I've experimented with different aspect ratios & relative sizes of the content & the frame, but the same thing always happens, so this seems to be deliberate.  Does anyone know of any workarounds, or any options in the viewer builder (which we don't yet have) that might fix this?

    I think this has to do with the fact that you have to "activate" the interactive overlay with a single tap. After that you can pinch and zoom. Before that, even a swipe is not possible.
    That is different for the action "Pan only", wich is automatically activated.
    I hope this will get fixed in the future. We need the autoplay option even for Pan & Zoom for instant access to that interactive overlay.

  • How can I enable Active Directory network login while maintaining the existing local user account data?

    We have a user base of around 15 Macs that we would like to integrate into Active Directory. However, we need to maintain the existing users local account data but do not wish to have that data moved to the network. Is there an easy way to create the AD login and then move the existing account data to the new login while maintaining correct permissions?
    I've had some success logging in as root and deleting the existing account, while maintaining the home folder. Then renaming it to match the AD login account name and replacing the new and empty AD user home.  I then perform a CHOWN on that folder to give ownership to the AD account name.
    Is it this simple? I don't want to leave any loose ends.
    Thanks for any help you can provide,
    Scott

  • Network Service Order not working properly.

    In System->Network->Set Service Order I have Thunderbolt Ethernet above Wi-Fi but this order doesn't seem to always be honoured.
    Sometimes, it will use Wi-Fi even when TB Ethernet is connected and working.
    OS X 10.8.5 on a 15" mid-2012 rMBP
    Any ideas why? Known bug?
    Annoying when doing things like back-ups as Gigabit Ethernet is faster than 802.11n

    OK, after a couple of hours trawling through numerous threads about the TB->Ethernet adaptor I've found the answer. It's not a network problem per se, it's to do with the way network shares bind to network interfaces.
    When a share mounts it searches for a network interface using the Service Order. As this is a laptop it invariably uses Wi-Fi as the TBE is usually not available. However, if a higher priority interface later becomes available, the share doesn't re-bind to this, it remains bound to the original interface.
    The share will only bind to the new interface if either it is unmounted/remounted or the original interface goes away. So by turning off Wi-Fi it forces it onto the TBE (and Wi-Fi could be turned back on straightaway).
    This also explains why, when I deleted the plist file you suggested, it appeared to work at first but this was only because the TBE was connected when I restarted my computer.
    I don't know whether this is considered "standard" or "normal" behaviour for a network share or whether it's a bug - or just poor design - by Apple. As a user, i would want network activity to always use the fastest interface available.

  • EWS service calls not responding. No timeout, no error, no response

    Hi.
    I'm using the EWS Managed API v2.2 to make EWS calls to Exchange 2010 SP1 on premises.  The referenced code is a C# client application running in .Net 3.5 on a Windows 2008 server.
    Recently at one of my customers, we have a weird situation where service calls, any service call,never receives a response.
    We are setting an explicit timeout, surrounding service calls with logging and are using EWS trace listening.  The listener show the EWSRequest SOAP message, and that's it.  The logging shows the "before service call" log entry but not the
    "after service call" entry.
    I suspected throttling might be behind it and have temporarily removed the EWS throttling limits to no effect and in any case, I would expect an error response if throttling was kicking in.
    This is how the service is initialised:
    public ExchangeWebService(string username, string password, string emailAddress, string exchangeUrl, string exchangeVersion)
    ExchangeVersion exVersion = (ExchangeVersion)Enum.Parse(typeof(ExchangeVersion), exchangeVersion);
    _exchangeService = CreateExchangeService(username, password, emailAddress, exchangeUrl, exVersion);
    _exchangeService.Timeout = 30000;
    private static ExchangeService CreateExchangeService(string username, string password, string emailAddress,
    string exchangeUrl, ExchangeVersion exchangeVersion)
    IntegrationLogging _il = new IntegrationLogging(Constants.LoggingSourceName);
    ExchangeService service = new ExchangeService(exchangeVersion);
    QualifiedUserName qualifiedName = new QualifiedUserName(username);
    NetworkCredential credentials = new NetworkCredential(qualifiedName.UserName, password);
    if (qualifiedName.HasDomain)
    credentials.Domain = qualifiedName.Domain;
    service.Credentials = credentials;
    if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(exchangeUrl))
    if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(emailAddress))
    throw new ArgumentException("emailAddress and exchangeUrl parameters cannot both be empty");
    else
    _il.WriteTrace(string.Format("CreateExchangeService using auto discovery with email address {0} and user name {1}. {2}", emailAddress, username, Environment.StackTrace));
    service.AutodiscoverUrl(emailAddress);
    else
    _il.WriteTrace(string.Format("CreateExchangeService using EWS URI {0} and user name {1}", exchangeUrl, username));
    service.Url = new Uri(exchangeUrl);
    return service;
    From one of the methods that never returns, we get the first log entry but not the second and our perf monitor shows the thread still running at the line of the service call.
    _il.WriteTrace("ConvertInternalIdToEwsId:mailboxAddress=" + mailboxAddress);
    AlternateIdBase _altBase = _exchangeService.ConvertId(_alternateId, IdFormat.EwsId);
    _il.WriteTrace("ConvertInternalIdToEwsId:Returned from call");
    return ((AlternateId)_altBase).UniqueId;
    The service instance is of type `Microsoft.Exchange.WebServices.Data.ExchangeService`.
    This problem seems to be intermittent.  How can a call not result in a response, an exception or a timeout?
    Thanks
    Simon

    Did you check the IIS logs on the target server, to make sure that the EWS requests are actually reaching it?
