Network Set Up

This one is a doozy, mainly due to me explaining to set ups. Initially, I set up a wired network with a Wireless Router (WRT54G2) as the lead router.
This is in a small office application style environment.5 wired pc's. We are using DSL (w/DSL modem) into a WRT54G2 ,with:
-#1 port going to a pc,
-#2 port going to a 5 port switch, that goes to another pc, a shared wired only network printer and another WRT54G2(For wireless access). -#3 port going to a decent Belkin wireless router for wireless access. -#4 port going to a 5 port switch,(here is where the pretzel comes into play)
The 5 port switch then goes to -#1 another WRT54G2 for wireless access. -#2 heads down to a linksys 8 port switch.
The 8 port linksys switch: -#1 to a wired PC -#2 to a wired PC -#3 to a WRT54G2 -#4 to a 5 port linksys switch which goes into a WRT300N and a 5 port switch which goes to another WRT300N,WRT600N. -#5 to a 5 port linksys switch which goes to a PC and a WRT54GS.
All these routers put out wireless access in their locations. Then a mysterious "Programmer" comes along and makes some changes to the lead router so he can access one of the wired PC's from his home. In turn the lead router stopped putting out wireless. So I set the puppy to factory settings ,removed his changes(Blocking him)
Then I read linksys routers should not be in line with each other. So like a genius I replaced the head router with a 5 port linksys switch and lost "Internet access" to everything after the switch except for 1 port on the second switch, that one port would not give internet to anything along the line except for one wired PC.
For the hell of it I placed a router where the second switch was and was granted internet all over once again, but had issues with the one wired pc and shared files with the other wired PC's at the head switch. Seems things would work fine with a router after the modem and switches into routers there after.
So my questions would be
-Is it a problem running a router after a router ?
-Why would switches lose internet access on some ports but not all?
There is No firewalls up. No uplink ports are being used.
How would you choose to route for a wired network that needs to toss out wireless at different points around the building ? I didnt want to go about linking up wireless to wirless using wireless. The goal here was to use the wired to unleash wireless at certain sections and using the wired due to the fact that the building design and material would surely block wireless to wireless,as well as trying to keep the items out of site. Suggestions and ty for reading

This is difficult to troubleshoot without knowing the exact configuration of all those wireless routers and the exact LAN setup, in particular:
* How is each router connected to the LAN? Through its WAN/Internet port or a numbered LAN port?
* Configuration of each router: internet connection setup (DHCP, Static IP, etc.) and the details if applicable (i.e. static IP address, subnet mask, dns, gateway, etc.)
* Configuration of each router: LAN connection setup, LAN IP address, subnet mask, DHCP server enabled/disabled, if enabled, address pool.
* Configuration of each router: running in gateway (NAT) mode or router mode. Any added static routes.
* Configuration of computers, i.e. do they get their IP address through DHCP from the router, from a server or do they use static IP addresses.
* Do you want a single LAN (all devices are connected to the same LAN and can communicate with each other) or do you need separated LANs. If the latter for what purpose (e.g. security).
* How many wireless networks do you need? Do you want a single roaming network or dedicated networks at different places?
* How do you do the wireless channel assigments of those wireless routers? Which channels do you use?
If some computers on a switch have internet and some not it is often because you have two DHCP server running in your network one of which gives out bogus settings.

If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast.  If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used.  The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID .  Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network.  A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default.  Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in.  HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you.  You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files.  Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.

  • I've forgotten my Wi-Fi password for a network set-up years ago and am trying to include a new iMac on the same network. How can I do this?

I've forgotten my wi-fi password for a home network set-up years ago on a Powerbook. I'm now trying to add a new iMac to the same network so I can have 2 hooked up. How can I retrieve my password for the network I created or can I set-up a new one? I did try the latter, but it didn't seem to work on the new iMac for some reason. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    HI, Welcome to the Forums...
The password may be stored in your keychain on the system you set up the original PowerBook.
Run KeyChain access in the utilities filder and see if you have a Airport base station password entry, from this you can reveal the password.

Definitely sounds like an issue with your Wi-Fi network. Do any other devices on the network have similar issues? Is it an issue only with downloading apps? You can check by trying to load a website in Safari.
I would try turning your Wi-Fi router off for 1 minute, and back on again.
After doing that, disconnect and re-join the Wi-Fi network on your iPhone and try downloading an app again.

  • PLEASE HELP ME, Problems with airport/network set up all of a sudden.

Ok here goes. Saturday Aug. 19 I was on the internet, everythings fine. Then all of a sudden my airport drops/disconnects. I went into assistant, internet connect, preferences and so on. My computer tells me in Network Diagnostics that the airport is green, airport settings is green, network setting is green, isp is green, but internet and server are red. Ive messed around with it to no prevail, in fact I believe I think I have made it worse. Now only the airport is green. I have know idea. My roommate also has an Apple and his wireless/airport is fine, nothings changed. As I have "messed" with it, I have come across a section where it tells me my internet set up/preferences or something has been changed by another application, if that makes any sense. This is not so much a problem as it is a hassel. Now I must sit at the coffee table to get on the internet.
Is there a way to start over or is this a serious problem needing an Apple store tec? Can someone walk me through what I need to do to fix this, as I have no idea what Im doing.
If there is any more information needed... Please ask.

No the password isn't your apple id password.
You encrypted your backup with a password, if you don't remember the password, then i'm sorry you won't be able to use it.

    Hi sunnylordz,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you have no service on the iPhone. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. There is one step you did not mention trying that i think is worth trying.
If you see No Service in the status bar of your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
Remove the SIM card. If the SIM card is damaged, worn, or bent, or if it's too big or small for the SIM tray, contact your carrier for a new one. Then reinsert the SIM card.
    Cheers,
    Mario

  • What is the Smallest Mac Network Set Up

We are a two person office -two imacs on 10.6 and would like to know what the smallest, most efficient network set up between the two machines could be, including back up. Central data access is the issue.
    a) We heard there are dedicated external hard drives that can be used by two machines at the same time. If so what are they called and how can you back them up?
    b) We thought of buying a mac mimi as a server and use its hd as the communal network hd. Do we have to buy an extra screen to see what the mini is doing and also do we need a router as an interface?
If someone can give us a hint, would be much appreciated
    best,
    fred

There are a lot of ways you could tackle this one; which way you go will depend on what your full needs are, such as:
How much shared storage do you anticipate needing?
Do you need backups of that data, as well as backups of the iMacs?
Do you need more controlled shared access to files than simple peer-to-peer file sharing allows?
Do you need any of the services that OS X Server provides?
The new Mini server would certainly be a viable option as a simple file-sharing and backup server. (I would dedicate an external drive on the Mini for use with Time Machine to back up the Mini and the iMacs rather than using one of the internal drives.) OS X Server can be run "headless" via a networked computer with the provided Server Tools. A new router would not be necessary, providing you have a free port on your existing router or switch to connect the Mini to.
Another option would be an NAS device like the Drobo units to house your files. Relatively simple units with little setup. The downside is backups - I believe that most NAS devices run in RAID 1 or SPAN, so there's little fallback if a drive in the NAS unit fails. Still, this would be less expensive an option than a Mini server and extra storage..
    Food for thought.

  • Proper connection between av receiver and iMac (network setting)

What would be the proper network setting, to connect an av receiver (connected to cable router/modem)? Tech support peeps at Harman Kardon say I need to share my "Music Library", for the home network feature to work and allow me to stream music from my iMac (running OS X 10.9.2).

Does your Harman Kardon support airplay?  Does it have wifi?  You're gonna need to give more info unless someone here happens to have your exact setup.  How does your mac connect to the internet?

  • Network setting is changed to WCDMA Preferred when connected to Wifi

Network setting is not changed at little time, but seems to be changed when Wifi is connected for a long time.
    Is there the solution?

    Hi Erisis,
Welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
With the information supplied, I can advise that this is likely related to an application changing the setting. I suggest that you try use the handset in Safemode and see if the issue continues.
    1. Turn handset off
    2. Turn handset on
    3. When you see first splash screen hold down Volume Down key until handset is completely on.
To turn Safemode off simply turn the handset off and back on like normal.
Let us know if the issue continues.

If you carefully follow all of the instructions in this tip and none of them restore WiFi then your radio chip has failed and you need to get the phone replaced by Apple.
