Network setting keep changing!!!!

After several months of trouble-free net access with my Airport Extreme, D-Link modem and G4 powerbook, I'm getting trouble!
Sometimes I connect to the internet fine when I startup: sometimes not. Even when I do, suddenly (for no apparent reason) it stops.
So, several times a day I have to go through network diagnostics...this detects a change in network settings, then everything's fine again when I accept the change that's been detected...for a while.
This is driving me nuts!!! Can anyone suggest what I can do to stop this??!!
Thanks very much,
JB.

That will make your mac always connect to that specfic network.
Give that a try and let us know how it works.

Hi Erisis,
Welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
With the information supplied, I can advise that this is likely related to an application changing the setting. I suggest that you try use the handset in Safemode and see if the issue continues.
1. Turn handset off
2. Turn handset on
3. When you see first splash screen hold down Volume Down key until handset is completely on.
To turn Safemode off simply turn the handset off and back on like normal.
Let us know if the issue continues.

• Network name keeps changing with Print Share

I have 3 iMacs on a network using a Brother MFC-9840CDW printer. My computer is set for print sharing. I keep getting messages that the name of my computer is already in use on this network and it keeps adding a higher number at the end of the name. But as soon as it does that, the other computer cannot print until I change my computer name back to the previous number. It works for a while, and then I get the network name error message again.
What can I do to resolve this? Thanks.

New MB user. have windows network. installed printer CUPS driver for my brother 7820N printer. can print when connected directly with USB. MB recognizes printer when not connected directly...must be going through the wireless network. try to print and little printer icon on DOCK starts jumping...says printer is Off-Line. can see the files in the queue.
Any ideas on how to make the printer "on-line"? Thank you.

• Network Preferences keep changing

Hello All
Every time I start up my old G3 iMac (OS 10.2), the network preferences change from "USB Modem" to "Internal Modem", this is despite the preferences being locked. Also, when I try to change back, the USB Modem isn't even listed. It usually reappears as an unchecked item in the list with a further restart.
Can anyone help?
Cheers

You may have to see if doing the basic stuff helps; since a
first thing could be to 'repair disk permissions' in the system
using Disk Utility's first aid. Could be a minor thing and not
something more difficult. I often boot into SafeBoot and then
repair disk permissions, then exit disk utility, and restart.
If the actual system is somehow corrupted - after trying repairs
of permissions - then later, maybe try to boot from the Installer disc
& use the Disk Utility there, different than the system's own) to
'repair disk' and 'repair disk permissions.' That version of D.U.
is hiding in a drop-down menu found in the menu options under
the Installer name, after startup from the system disc media.
Do not run the Installer itself, since that's not where D.U. is.
And, if repairing permissions and other stuff doesn't seem to help
and resetting PRAM/NVRAM doesn't, you may have to consider
using the Installer and have run an 'Archive & Install' and set it to
save user settings from the old system into a new one. Then, you
would have a new system folder & a non-functioning previous one.
This may require more work to get it back to where you had it; &
it would need to be upgraded again with the 10.2.8 Combo file plus
any security or other updates applied, too.
Good luck & happy computing!

• Reader.ini - offline network folder keeps changing

I have offline folders setup for all of my users for use with their personal home drives (network drives). Everytime they syncronize their offline folders before leaving at night, windows always lets them know that the "reader.ini" file is different than the one on the network. It is getting very annoying. Does anybody know what is cauing this? Any type of work around? Why is reader.ini in a network folder in the first place? Have tried deleting it but it just comes back.
S

I have the same issue with the reader.ini file. Because it's default location is the Windows My Documents path (which in this case is a syncronised folder) you constantly get sync conflicts.
We need to know how to change the behavoir of Adobe so the reader.ini is in somewhere else like C:\Docs & Set\%user%\App Data\Adobe. I'm not sure why it's not in the first place.
Can anyone from Adobe please address this?

• Network connection keeps changing after sleep mode

I bought a brand new iMac for my mom just over 2 months ago and have been having internet connection problems. Sleep is set manually going under Apple and hitting sleep. Every time it's woken up after sleep the internet connection is gone and has to keep manually being switched to our network name which is quite frustrating. Tried this fix found on an old link on here: http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/06/lion-wi-fi-problems-solution-mac/?utm_source=feed burner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+osxdaily+%28OS+X+Daily%29&utm_conten t=FaceBook
and it didn't work. All the threads I found were from 2010 or 2012. Just wondering if there is a recent fix on here.

• "number of items in all folders" setting keeps changing

Hello
I have the problem, that a customer wants to see the number of mails in an outlook folder (exchange). When I set the option "number of items in all folders" it works - but only as long, as Outlook is running...
As soon as I close Outlook, it changes back to the number of unread items...
How can i permanently set this option to "number of items in all folders"?
Kind regards,
Eddie

Hi,
By default, the "Show total number of items" setting should persists after restarting Outlook. Moreover, the setting will also be kept when you change to another computer.
Please try to create a new mail profile in Control Panel and reconfigure your Exchange account to troubleshoot the issue. For your reference:

Please let me know the result.

• Email setting keeps changing

I had to re-install my software because I had a "permissions" issure Disk Utility could not fix. I have everything working except my email. I put in the outgoing email name of my ISP smtp.citlink.net. They reguire a user name dsve and password. I enter those and when I save it. It adds my user name to the smtp name making it smtp.citlink.net.dave. Of course the ISP rejects it because it'a suppose to be just smtp.citlink.net. How do I stop it from changing?

You surely are not alone having problems with Mail 4.x configuration, just browse this forum for other ideas.
However, if you tried to setup your account automatically, you may wish to try to do so manually, after deleting your current settings:
(From link: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2009091121155087 )
+When setting up an email account like Gmail, 10.5's Mail Setup Assistant provided an option to do it automatically or not via a checkbox in the Setup Assistant.+
+That checkbox is gone in Mail 4.0 in Snow Leopard, and Mail Setup assistant creates such an account automatically. In particular, a Gmail account is always created as IMAP, with seemingly no way to create it as POP.+
+To bypass the automatic account creation, hold down the Option key after entering your email address and password. Then the Create button will change to Continue, and Mail will allow you to set up the account manually. I should add that I consider the elimination of the checkbox for automatic setup in favor of this method to be an awful design decision that defies logic or explanation.+

• Network Setting being changed by another application?

Hi,
Out of nowhere, I started to get this problem whenever I try to modify the settings on my Network Preferences. A prompt would pop up with the text "Your network settings have been changed by another application." and all I can do is click OK. After the OK is clicked, the same prompt would immediately reappear. This is on a 1.67Ghz Powerbook running OSX 10.4.11.
I'll try to link a picture to a screen grab.

• [SOLVED] Network interface name keeps changing

My network interface name keeps changing between wlp2s0 and wlan0. This is a real pain, since I never know what name will be generated at boot. Most of the time it's called wlp2s0, so this is what netctl is set up to handle by itself. At boots were wlan0 is generated I have to connect manually.
I've tried making the name static by adding a rule to the /etc/udev/rules.d/10-network.rules. The rule i added was:
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", ATTR{address}=="48:5d:60:7e:64:e9", NAME="wlp2s0"
Wlp2s0 is generated at boot alright, but I still have to connect manually with this solution. As if the "new" wlp2s0 is not recognized as the old one (same MAC). What gives?
This is on an Asus Eee 1001PXD, with the Qualcomm Atheros AR9285.

I've now been able to replicate the issue, and run the command:
journalctl -b
I did find the output:
mai 18 02:30:02 <hostname> systemd-udevd[126]: error changing net interface name wlan0 to wlp2s0: Device or resource busy
I haven't been able to process the whole output yet (I'll continue tomorrow if necessary), but I've found some things that I hope will clearify things. I get similar outputs to the following a lot throughout:
mai 18 02:30:03 <hostname> dhcpcd[237]: wlan0: carrier lost
mai 18 02:30:03 <hostname> dhcpcd[237]: wlan0: waiting for carrier
mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: [email protected]: control process exited, code=exited status=1
mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Failed to start Automatic wireless network connection using netctl profiles.
mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.
mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Starting Network.
mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Reached target Network.
EDIT:
I see now that this is later in time, so that's not so strange after all. I'll look some more.
EDIT2:
The error code that a name change i impossible is the first time the term 'wlan0' occurs in the log. However there's a line much earlier that talks about wlp2s0:
mai 18 02:29:59 <hostname> systemd[1]: Expecting device sys-subsystem-net-devices-wlp2s0.device...
But as I said, if this information doesn't help, I'll have a closer look at the output tomorrow. Getting late here in Norway now.

Network ip address keeps changing and for some reason I can't find the right settings. The diagnostics says to check with my network administrator, but idk whom that is being at a motel and all. I have made. New locations, & changed the ipv4 address. Help plz

Hmmm, is Network set to using DHCP?
Go to System Preferences
Click Network
Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
Reboot
Go back to the “By default, join:” page and click the plus this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot.

• Why does the local network and computer name keep changing?

After upgrading to Yosemit the local network name and computername on my iMAC keep changes link:
Mycomputer-1
Mycomputer-2
Mycomputer-3
Why?
I have tried to change it back in sharing and network locations.
Is this also the reason the my iPhone cannot find my iPhone often cannot find my iMac when I will sync it? Then I have to restart the iPhone and iTunes on the computer. This happens very very often.
Maybe it also linked to these errors which the log is full of - many every minute:

I think the is some bug/clash between bonjour and other network protocols. That is only a guess.

After resetting the computer name and local host name to the correct name without the number I also shotdown my iMac, my AppleTV, my iPhone, my iPad and then rebooted my Airport/Time capsule it seemed to work at least for several days. But yesterday I discovered that my Apple TV now also has changed name to Apple TV (2).
I logged into iCloud.com to see my devices and here it was really wired. My Apple TV was called Apple TV (2) and my iMac also had (2) after the name. Then I checked it on the iMac but here it was correct! Why can it have one name on the iCloud and another on the computer.
I restarted both the iMac, Apple TV and Airport Time capsule then everything was correct also on iCloud.com.
But today the iMac was called the name (2) again on the iMac. And now the local host name also had -2 after the name. It has not always been both names that has changed. That is really wired. And today Wifi was not working on the iMac after wake from sleep. I changed the name back and rebooted again also the Airport Time capsule. Now it is working again.
The log is still full of this messages:

The name is not the only problem. Often itunes will not find my iPhone and iPad. Then i need to close iTunes and restart the iPhone and iPad then it works for some time.
And the iPhone and AppleTV will not always wake the iMac from sleep. I am wondering if the is linked to the changing of name.
I have seen by googling that it can be related to a sleep proxy problem so it seems like that here is two devices on the net with the same name that is why name is changing, but to know this do not help me to solve the problem. I have also seen all the suggestion to turn almost every services off on the computer, but again I it is not a solution and I have the iMac and devises to use the functionality not to shot everything down. So I do not really understand people saying turn off itunes, turn off blueboth, and turn off this and that.
Apple must soon come with a real solution. We are really many people have these problem since we upgraded to Yosemite and iOS 8.

If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast. If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used. The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID . Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network. A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default. Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in. HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you. You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files. Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.
