Network Settings: Configure IPv6, On or Off?

Hello everyone.
A while back I read on MacFixIt that some experience slowness in internet connection after 10.4.5 update, and it suggested turning 'off' the IPv6 setting inside the Network settings, found at the bottom of it.
I was curious and click the button to find my 'Configure IPv6' was set to 'Automatic'.
In any case, I did not experience any drastic change in the speed of my internet connection after the 10.4.5 update; and I actually turn off my IPv6 setting, which again no so much drastic change in speed.
So the question is: Should I leave it on at 'Automatic' or turn it off?
Info: My iMac is connected directly (wired) to my cable modem.
Thanks and cheers

I've tried it on & off & didn't notice any difference at all.
But - if you need to use stuffit expander - it'll crash on starting stuffit unless IPv6 is enabled. found that on stuffits forum after wondering why it suddenly wouldn't work.

Nope. You can always reverse that if you choose.

  • I lose my Wi-Fi network settings every time I turn off

Hello, and thank you for your time. Just bought my iPod Touch yesterday, and am loving it.
One problem I'm having, though. I can't keep the settings for the network I want to use.
I configured my router's network on it. Put in WEP and the security key. I was connected to Wi-Fi just fine, no problems.
Then I turned the iPod off. When I turned it back on, even though the iPod is configured with the router (which is on private network, so my "lovely" neighbors don't leech off it), my network disappears. My PlayStation 3 that I'm not using for a network appears every time I turn on and off. But, every time I turn the iPod on, I have to put in the information for the network I want to use (name, security, password) all over again.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Sorry if there's an answer here already and I missed it. Thank you.
    Walter

You need to select to "remember" the access point so it automatically reconnects unless by "private network" you mean that you're not broadcasting the SSID. If that's the case, it won't reconnect automatically-it's a feature, not a bug. My advice, broadcast the SSID and set a strong password. Hiding it doesn't do much for you from a security standpoint. Setting a 40 digit random password does.
If this doesn't work, do a Restore.

  • Network settings for travel abroad

To avoid extravagant roaming charges while I'm abroad, I know to switch off the roaming data under network settings. Should I toggle off the cellular data as well? It seems redundant.
As an experiment (here at home) I tried to use the map app with cellular data switched off. The map couldn't locate me. So it appears that without cellular data it would be difficult to use the map during an overseas sojourn. That would be a shame.

The built in maps app requires a data connection, as the maps are not stored locally on your phone. Data roaming turned off "should" work as advertised, but some users have reported nasty surprises with data roaming turned off. Thus, you now have the option to completely disable any cellular data connection. Another option is to put the phone in airplane mode. This turns ALL iphone radios off. But, you can go back into settings & turn both WiFi & bluetooth back on.

  • Network settings says "Airport is off"... but it's not!

This is more just a curiosity than anything. In my network settings, even though the dot next to my airport is green, it says my "Airport is currently off." Before it was giving me configuring problems, but I deleted a bunch of prefs that were suggested in another Airport post (one about not being able to join a preferred network, because it simply wasn't an option to select). So now I can select my preferred network, but still... "Airport is currently off"!

What does Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations report for ON Ports?
Have you tried making a New User to test if they have the same problem?
If worse comes to worse and you can redo all your Network Settings, try trashing these files then Reboot...

  • My wifi wasn't working for more than 10 minutes at a time after updating to IOS8 and resetting network settings. I turned off google drive, turned off Bluetooth, reset network settings and rebooted my iPad4. So far so good.

I have an ipad4.  Wifi keeps cutting out after the upgrade even after I forget the network and resign on or reset all network settings. I deleted iCloud drive from my iPad, turned off Bluetooth, reset network settings, and rebooted my iPad. Since I upgraded to IOS8 this is the longest wifi has consistently been working for me. Which is approximately an hour now. Anyone else find that this worked or have figured out if this or anything out there is a permanent fix?

    Hi CollinGCC78,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If you are still having issues, you may want to double-check the steps outlined in the following article, in order if possible (apologies for replicating any steps you have already taken):

  • After connecting to Bluetooth keyboard, iPad 2 will not connect to Internet (wifi) at all. Wifi is ok, have tried turning off bltooth, wifi on iPad. It sees the network but won't connect.  Help?  Have also reset network settings etc

My iPad wifi was working great until I I connected it by Bluetooth to a keyboard (zagg).  It was the first time I'd used Bluetooth
Immediately Internet was dropped on my ipad. My iPhone was and is still connected no prob. And I cannot get the iPad wifi to work again....at all!!!
This is major as I am away from my desktop for three months.  Any fix cannot involve being at my desktop with iTunes which is 10,000 km away
So far This is what I've tried based on other discussions-
-turned Bluetooth off and unpaired to keyboard which was also turned off
    - turned iPad wifi off and on (several times)
    - forgot the network I useArrive Jul 19 depart Aug 25th. Originally it was Sept 9.
    -- reset network settings
What happens is that the iPad sees the network and I enter my password. But, instead of getting "check mark" indicating a successful connections it keeps "circling".  Sometimes the airport bars will show, but disappear or flicker.  It never connects with a check noted in settings.   Any attempts to use internet confirm there is no connection
My network is not a cafe or public network. It is one I regularly use here at my family's home where I am visiting
    Any ideas!

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

I have just upgraded from a 3 to a 4S and now I can't connect to my wifi. I've tried everything, resetting network settings, switching to boot, renewing lease, rebooting, turning off cellular data etc etc. nothing works!! Very frustrating!

  • Configure Network Settings. DHCP is used unless otherwise specified

    Hello
I have created a task sequence that is used in multiple domains.
In one domain DHCP is not configured and we need to use the "Bootable media that uses the Configmr infrastructure".
This bootable media is running fine when DHCP is enabled.
However, when I configure the network settings Manual in WINPE the client
can connect to the SCCM server.
After SCCM applies the OS image and reboots the network settings are gone and the Task Sequence crashes.
Is there a simple way to transfer the network settings from WINPE to the OS?

I usually use ZTINICConfig.wsf of MDT
to capture those network settings. That means that I add the following two steps to my task sequence:
    A Use Toolkit Package step, to copy the MDT package;
    A
Run Command Line step, with the command %Scriptroot%\ZTINICConfig.wsf /ForceCapture, to capture the network settings.

I updated my 4S phone to IOS 7.1.2 and lost my wi-fi.   The wi-fi is on, but can't find ANY networks.   I have been through all the steps, from turning the phone on and off, resetting the network settings, resetting the whole phone, redownloading 7.1.2 and lastly going to the Apple store for help.   They tried all the exact same steps I did, took the phone apart and looked at and said it is in "pristine" condition.   They have no idea why it isn't working, but they could offer to sell me another phone.    This is extremely annoying!    They claim it has nothing to do with the update to 7.1.2, but that is when I lost the wi-fi, so it has to be related!

My 4s i-phone which is 2 years old cannot find any wi-fi networks not even my home network... I had the same problem two months ago but i turned off the i-phone for 8 hours and then it was okay... Now it happened again.... I tried to restart the modem but whilst my laptop is connected regularly, my phone still cannot find any wi-fi networks... I restart the i-phone, i reset it, i chose reset network settings, reset all settings, i turned it off for a whole day in case it was overloaded, i turned on the airplane mode and turned it off again, i put it into the freezer for 10 minutes within a zipped bag but 3 days now and i still cannot be connected to my home wifi... I went to the technician today and he told me that it means that wi-fi is broken and that i need to change it with a charge of 70 euro but i have to give my phone for 10 working days so as to be fixed... I am so frustrated and i don't know if i want to give 70 euro for wifi since i don't know if it would make the same problems again...
