Network Settings Disappearing

I keep loosing my internet connection since doing the upgrade earlier this week and I have come to my own conclusions on what's going on. I believe that the update helped create a leak in memory, since if I can connect to the internet for three to four hours and then have the connection dropped and not reestablished without rebooting, where would the settings go.

I found my problem within the Airport Utility. My Lease was set to four hours where as it should have been set to four days running under DHCP.

I have iPhone 4s with iOS version 6.0.1. I often use the Personal Hotspot for various reason but I recently attempted to connect a ipod touch 4th Gen but when it attempted to connect the Network setting on my iphone completely dissappeared. The screen basically refreshed but without the Network settings. I've turned the phone of and back on using the standard turning off, I did a network reset and a hard reset with no change. I don't particularly want to do a full setting reset and I most definately want to avoide a full factory reset & restore. I've done some googleing and there is also no "Cellular" settings either.

I have also attempted to update but it says it's up to date. I've also been with the same carrier for years with the Hotspot/ tethering active, there has been no change with my carrier since the last time I used the Hotspot.

  • Networks list and settings disappeared

Can anybody tell me where to find the file that contains all the network settings that are in System Prefs> Network in my computer? I've just changed hard drives and all my networks list and their settings have disappeared.

I copied ALL 5 items form that folder to the active system and it fixed the problem. Still don;t know which of those items was the one that did it but it's fixed. Many thanks

  • After connecting to Bluetooth keyboard, iPad 2 will not connect to Internet (wifi) at all. Wifi is ok, have tried turning off bltooth, wifi on iPad. It sees the network but won't connect.  Help?  Have also reset network settings etc

My iPad wifi was working great until I I connected it by Bluetooth to a keyboard (zagg).  It was the first time I'd used Bluetooth
Immediately Internet was dropped on my ipad. My iPhone was and is still connected no prob. And I cannot get the iPad wifi to work again....at all!!!
This is major as I am away from my desktop for three months.  Any fix cannot involve being at my desktop with iTunes which is 10,000 km away
So far This is what I've tried based on other discussions-
-turned Bluetooth off and unpaired to keyboard which was also turned off
    - turned iPad wifi off and on (several times)
    - forgot the network I useArrive Jul 19 depart Aug 25th. Originally it was Sept 9.
    -- reset network settings
What happens is that the iPad sees the network and I enter my password. But, instead of getting "check mark" indicating a successful connections it keeps "circling".  Sometimes the airport bars will show, but disappear or flicker.  It never connects with a check noted in settings.   Any attempts to use internet confirm there is no connection
My network is not a cafe or public network. It is one I regularly use here at my family's home where I am visiting
    Any ideas!

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • Network settings export - is it compatible across all osx versions ?

    Hi.
I have created a network preferences export file to configure vpn settings on other osx macs here at work (using 10.6.8). Can anyone tell me if this file is compatible with all osx os versions, or do I need to generate osx major version specific export files ?
    Thanks, milleuardo

I did do as you said and a few other ways also in trying to troubleshoot this, but it still doesn't save the settings. Setting the lock on does no good since the settings disappear after the "Apply" button is pressed. You have to "Apply" before you lock.
    Very confusing....
I'm an old *nix guy, so I thought I'll just shell in and change the files manually. Did that, but if I opened Network Prefernces again and changed anything, it reverted the files back.
    Very, very confusing....
I have only one setting - in DNS - but it stays there. I never used WINS.
You might see if you can do it with another user with admin privs as a test.
Also if you haven't, run DU and check the HD and repair permissions.
Barring that, you may have a corrupted .plist that needs trashing. Sometimes the preference file for a group of settings gets corrupted and by dragging it to the desktop the system creates a new one. This could work, but there are not guarantees.
The .plist files are in User->Library->Preferences. I don't know of a good list of which plist goes with which preferences other than that the names are sometimes (but not always) helpful

  • Network settings not sticking?

Noob (Win convert) question, I think.
Leopard 10.5 with DHCP enabled on my home and work networks. All settings from the DHCP servers come across and are correct in the Network prefernces. But, when I open the Network preferences panel and select Advanced - then add a new DNS server, and then add a WINS server, and also change the workgroup from "blank" to WORKGROUP. I do an apply, go back in to verify the settings and all that remains is the new DNS server I added. The WINS entries are gone as is the WORKGROUP. I tried doing this several different ways all having the same result. If I don't hit the apply button, it's all there, but once it applies, it disappears and I can't make the settings stick.
Thanks and apologies to all if this issue is know (I searched but found nada in these forums).

  • Network settings vanished?

I have a similar problem to those who can't connect to the Internet and get the "invalid argument" message when I try to connect, but mine is slightly different: my Network can be seen and it has the three bars, but if I click the blue button ALL my network settings (IP address, subnet mask, router, DNS, etc.) are blank. I've actually tried inputting them manually and they just disappear (except for my username.)
So far, I've also tried turning wi-fi on and off, resetting network settings, and resetting the Touch back to factory condition but nothing seems to work.
Also, this happens for every network I try to connect to: at home, at school, out in public, etc.

I have almost the exact problem with 2 new Ipods. In my case it seems to be limited to my home. They worked fine for a while, but after a few weeks they stopped connecting. They show the network icons but all of the fields are blank. I took them to one of the "geniuses" at the Apple store, who told me that the problem is with my home-wifi being set to WPA and that I should set it to WEP. That just doesn't sound right, but you may want to try it. I didn't. I am not going to downgrade my security settings and switch all of my home passwords to do this. I am sure there is another answer out there.

  • Airport Express won't join network and disappears from view once configured

Hi. I am having trouble getting my brand new Airport Express to connect to my network. I would appreciate any help you can provide. Here are the details:
Computer: iMac, G5 running OS X Tiger.
Network: Cable modem hooked to a netgear wireless b/g router. The router is configured to use WEP 128 bit encryption. I have connectivity on the router throughout the house on several computers and handheld devices (iPhone, etc).
    Airport Express Version: 5.3.1
My goal is to add the AE to my current network in order to stream music from iTunes to my receiver.
When I initially opened up the airtunes utility to set up the AE the setup program was able to find the AE and walk through the configuration process. I followed the steps, entered the correct network name, encryption algorithm, password, etc. When I completed setup and hit the update AE button the AE disappeared from the setup application and the device began to flash yellow. While troubleshooting I have reset the AE dozens of times over the past couple of days. I have done both the reset with power on (press reset for 10 seconds waiting for the quickflash) and the hard reset (plugging the AE in with the reset button depressed until the quickflash starts). In either case, the AE is rarely detected by the setup utility (about 1 in 10 times). When it is detected, I walk through the set up and get the same results. I have attempted configuration using both the manual configuration option and the automatic "wizard-like" method.
I have tried to configure the AE wirelessly with it plugged in next to the computer and using a direct hookup via ethernet cable. Both methods produce the same results - flashing yellow light with AE undetectable by any Airport applications.
I have also tried to load an older version of the firmware (5.3) on the AE. When I hit the update AE button after configuring the update to go from the current version to version 5.3 I get an error message stating that "an error occured while attempting to update."
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hi guys,
I think I'm having the same problem as you all, and its driving me crazzzzy!. I added an AX to my existing network with a AEX all thru gigabyte switch, including the new AX. I set the brand new AX up with all the settings, hit update, all settings were configured and its working fine (i can see it in iTunes, stream music to it, all works fine) EXCEPT when i go to AU and try to go into the manual setting of the AX it just hangs, and after about 2 min, i get an error message:
"An error occurred while reading the configuration. Please make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6722)"
I have tried resetting it hard/soft/default but not sure if it really does reset it, still keeps same password, and network settings. Tried connecting it next to my existing AEX incase the AX is trying to communicate via WIFI instead of the hard wired ethernet. I'll try hard wiring it directly to my mac as some have had success.
I have tried using OX 10.5.3, but still misbehaves as b4 with OSX.4.11. So its not my mac setup.
I'll try to find the old firmwares as some have described, that might work....????
This seems a common problem to many, I hope that Steve & the Apple engineers have got these messages and are fixing the problem as we speak.

  • Added a scanner with Secure Easy Setup and my wireless network has disappeared?

I just replaced my fax/scanner.  I have a secured wireless home network.  I installed the fax/scanner with Secure Easy Setup.  The fax works - but my home network as disappeared!!!  Where did it go?  Do I have to start over and reinstall my whole wireless network?  It took me forever to get it working the first time!  HELP!!!

when u run easilink again it will give you the chance to change some settings wirelessly, it could be that you have changed some settings and missed that part...
you could check that by accessing the set up page of the router 192.168.1.1

  • G4 10.4.11 System Preference Network settings lock up.

Having searched first, I found my problem:
"When I open System Preferences and then open Network, a box drops down that says "Your network settings have been changed by another application." If I click the blue OK button, the box disappears momentarily but continually reopens, thereby not allowing me to quit System. "
    But no answers.
This stared after I attempted to add a windows machine,98, to our home network on a belkin 4 port router, via ethernet. This operation failed for unknown reasons. At one point I entered the router IP address in the Windows system and may have entered it wrong. I have since disconnected the windows machine from the network and I still have the lockup in System Preferences. My coonection still works though as I am posting from the affected G4.

    I did BDAqua's suggestion
To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

  • Fixed "network settings have been changed" message but now can't network

As per suggestions, I deleted the files suggested, the message disappeared, and I reentered my network settings. But, now I can't connect to my laptop from my desktop. I can connect from my laptop to the desktop just fine, but when I try and connect in finder (and I tried connecting through network and through going to the laptop's ip address), it just spins for a while and then stops. Any notions?
The com.apple.nat.plist file didn't regenerate, but I put an old one in. Didn't seem to solve the problem.
    Thanks!

Ok, now I've gone and put back the original files in the hd/library/preferences/systemconfiguration folder. I've got the annoying "your network settings have been changed" message in my network window, but I still can't network to my laptop.
    Help?
FYI: The desktop is an old 2ghz x2 G5 running 10.4.11 and the laptop is a new MB unibody running 10.5.5

  • Resetting Network Settings on iPhone Affects My iPad

Not sure if this is normal or not but whenever I reset the network settings on my phone, the network settings on my iPad also reset as well. For the longest time I thought my settings were disappearing but that wasn't the case. Any ideas what could be happening?

  • Harddisk named "Untitled" and Network-settings lock is missing

I had some issues on my almost new 15'' Retina MBP early 2014, maximum configuration.
Safari glitches (minor or major square parts where covered by glitches)
Mouse disappeared whenever I played a movie in itunes
Audio de-synced from Video signal, in Safari and Eye TV
Crashing Apps (Reminder, Notes, Mail, Maps, etc)
I called Support to fix it: the 2nd Level Support told me to re-install, using a boot stick, created with DiskMakerX.
I followed his advices precisely, agreed to all setup details during the Mac setup, including file Vault, recovered all my Mac App Store Apps and copied my files manually from my most recent Time Machine backup.
BUT now the issues are following:
The name of my Harddisk is "Untitled", Type is called "Logical Volumegroup" (this is not about the partition name - which I could easily rename on my desktop)
--> The hard disk utility shows this name on the very top of the left side list, below its called Macintosh HD.
The network settings miss the lock, there is no way to secure / lock my network settings with my Mac Admin password, as I usually did before re-installing using the boot stick
maybe more, I did not discover yet....
Unacceptable is the insecure network settings situation.
I don't know about the impact of the unusual Harddisk name "Untitled"
I am responsible for my companies Account Management, I need to fix this a.s.a.p. !

Another big issue I have since then is:
My desktop does not show any files anymore, it is completely empty !!!
