Try:
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
OpenDNS IP Addresses
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem

  • HT1320 how do i reset the network settings on iPod 4th generation?

i've looked at heeps of websites to try and find out how but everything i try doesn't work for some reason

    Hey PandaBear,
I found the following info on resetting your network settings on an iPod touch with iOS 4:
Reset network settings: Choose General > Reset and tap Reset Network Settings.
When you reset network settings, your list of previously used networks and VPN settings not installed by a configuration profile are removed. Wi-Fi is turned off and then back on, disconnecting you from any network you’re on. The Wi-Fi and “Ask to Join Networks” settings are left turned on.
To remove VPN settings installed by a configuration profile, choose Settings > General > Profile, then select the profile and tap Remove.

  • Network Settings for Verizon DSL

I have some basic questions about network preferences for DSL.
I spent the day on the phone with Verizon yesterday trying to figure out how to configure settings on my modem, and in the process, had my connection broken and fixed four different times by three different tech support people--each one configured my system totally differently.
I would love to know which setup is actually the best one, and to have some idea what it all actually means.
In the beginning the modem had whatever the default configuration was, and my computer connected to it using PPPoE, automatically.
The next guy set me up with PPPoE but with a manually configured ip address (this only worked long enough for him to get off the phone).
The last guy configured the modem to connect with PPPoE, and to have the computer connect to the modem with DHCP. It all works, but I find it a bit disconcerting to have no simple software way to connect and disconnect. Seems the simplest way now to get off the net (for whatever reason) is to switch the modem off).
I'm in New York (someone mentioned verizon is set up differently in the east and the west) using a Westell Versa Link 327W modem, and OSX 10.4.3.
Any thoughts on this setup or on the ideal setup?
    Thanks,
    Paul

Usually you dial into your service and disconnect from it using the Internet Connect application located in your Utilities folder. However, the main idea of broadband services is that you don't have to disconnect. It's always on. DSL lets you connect to the net via the telephone, but does not interfere with normal telephone usage.
The normal setup is to configure PPoE for your dialup connection to the DSL service, and configure TCP/IP to use DHCP.

  • Compression settings for iPods?

I have some native 640x480 .mov files that my client wants me to make available for download from their web site so that their clients can load them on their video capable iPods.
What are the best settings/format for me to use in Compressor?

Open the settings and put ipod into the search filed, you'll see the two presets ready to go.
    From the compressor manual:
H.264 Workflows for iPod and Apple TV
The efficiency and quality of H.264 creates a number of options for iPod and Apple TV
    video producers:
Â Compressor includes two video sizes specifically designed for playback on an iPod: iPod
320 (QVGA) and iPod 640 (VGA). Both sizes create output media files that are
compatible for playing on an iPod, and both will look good on the display of the iPod.
Â As long as you intend the output media files to be viewed on the iPod itself, you
can use the iPod 320 encoder size, which produces files that are about one half the
size of the iPod 640 encoder size.
Â If you expect the output media files to be played on larger displays, whether in
iTunes or on a monitor connected to an iPod, you should use the iPod 640 encoder
    size with its higher quality.
Â If you have assigned chapter markers to the video using the Preview window, iTunes
will automatically use the first marker as the poster frame. If you assigned an image
to any markers in Compressor, the first marker with an image becomes the poster
frame in iTunes. You can change the poster frame in iTunes if necessary. See the
iTunes help for more information. See “Adding Chapter or Podcast Markers to a Clip”
on page 300 for more information about adding chapter markers in Compressor.
Â The Apple TV HD encoder size produces video files that are about four times the size
of the iPod 640 encoder size. These are not compatible with iPod playback and may
not play smoothly on older Macintosh computers.

  • Export Settings for iPod iTouch

Does anyone know the best settings for exporting video directly from Premiere CS3 to play on my iTouch? Quality? Size 640 x 480? Frame rate 30 fps? Bitrate etc, etc?
I have exported a video to QuickTime but the file won't sync. I've looked on iTunes and I should have an option under Advanced to convert the file to play on my iTouch but for some weird reason, that option isn't there.
I could buy QuickTime Pro which I assume has a preset but it seems silly if I can do it without!
    Chummy

    Hey Jeff,
Thanks for that. You know Jeff, this whole de-interlace thing is like some mystic art to me.
Most times when I render a video, to Flash or MPEG for example, I don't bother. I think I'm right in saying (although I could easily be wrong!) that encoding to Flash does it along the way and most software MPEG players do likewise. QuickTime I'm not sure about.
So why, if you don't mind me asking, do you suggest 'using a high-quality deinterlacer' in this instance?
And is the VirtualDub Smart Deinterlacer 'high quality'?
I think I also remember that someone has recommended a Panasonic plug in for VirtualDub although I've never used it...
And one final question (since you appear to have raised more in my mind than you imagined!), why use the VirtualDub for resizing instead of Pr?

  • Network settings for travel abroad

To avoid extravagant roaming charges while I'm abroad, I know to switch off the roaming data under network settings. Should I toggle off the cellular data as well? It seems redundant.
As an experiment (here at home) I tried to use the map app with cellular data switched off. The map couldn't locate me. So it appears that without cellular data it would be difficult to use the map during an overseas sojourn. That would be a shame.

The built in maps app requires a data connection, as the maps are not stored locally on your phone. Data roaming turned off "should" work as advertised, but some users have reported nasty surprises with data roaming turned off. Thus, you now have the option to completely disable any cellular data connection. Another option is to put the phone in airplane mode. This turns ALL iphone radios off. But, you can go back into settings & turn both WiFi & bluetooth back on.

  • Configuring my internet/network settings for msn.

MSN used to run flawlessly for me up until four or five days ago. Now it disconnects every 5-10 minutes, randomly decides to not send/receive messages in mid-conversation, and just generally ****** me off. Its error message of choice is "The system is unavailable now so you have been signed out of Microsoft Messenger." but I can always sign back in right away without issue. It makes no difference if I connect to the internet with my wireless or ethernet. The problem happens with Adium as well but at least Adium automatically reconnects. Are there any settings I should adjust in the System Preferences?

  • Cannot find default repeat settings for iPod nano 6th generation

Previous individual with problem last year had this problem and was told to go to the setting to set repeat defaults.   When I go to settings I cannot find a setting for repeats anywhere.  I have a couple of subscribed podcast that seems to always repeat.  Can anyone help?

The repeat setting can be found from the Nano's Now Playing screen.  While playing a track, swipe to the left to bring up additional controls including the repeat and shuffle settings.  See page 21 of your iPod's User Guide for more assistance on the repeat setting.

  • Best settings for ipod video playback on TV

I would like to know which video format is the best for a very good video playback on TV using ipod video ? And which settings choose for the video to have the best possible quality on TV, while still being able to store a lot of videos on the ipod.
I use a 1.67ghz powerbook, and the convertion process is so long, is it normal for it to be that long. I thought that powerbook were suppose to be really fast. Would buying more ram help ?
    thank you

If you're using QuickTime Pro's "Movie to iPod", then you're getting very good video quality. The reason why this takes so long is that instead of just compressing the video, it first examines the entire video looking for places that may be a little more difficult to encode (cross fades, cuts, high motion) then spending more time on them in the second pass. So, yeah, it's normal to take that long, but, in this case, that's how you get the best output.
Depending on your source (if it's from a VHS tape or something like that) you might want to download MPEG Streamclip and try H.263 or H.264 with only one pass. It's a bit faster and the results still look pretty good so that may suit you as well.

  • Best Network Settings for mostly wireless, sometimes wired?

    Folks:
My household --4 desktops Macs, 2 MacBooks, all running 10.4.x or 10.5.x-- lives by using DSL via a Netopia router controlling a LAN, with Cat 5 strung to six desks. No problem there, everything works. Note: for historical reasons --because, mostly, I forget what they were-- all desktops have static IP addresses.
But sometimes one of us wants to work in the house on a MacBook where there is no Cat 5 strung, that is, wirelessly. It's simple enough to set up a wireless server on one of the Airport-equipped desktops and make certain it stays awake.
That works, too, as long as each MacBook is configured with separate Network Preference "Locations" -- one for "Wired" and one for "Wireless", and the wireless configuration is IPv4 using DHCP with IPv6 disabled. Specifically, this requires the user to switch the Location when he/she connects or disconnects a Cat 5 cable.
    My questions:
    1. Is there a way of configuring the MacBooks so they will work without the requirement switching the Location when removing or connecting a LAN cable?
    2. Can this configuration also accommodate what is needed for typical hotspots out there in "the outside world", as in coffee-shops, etc, again without switching the Network Preference Location?
    3. Bonus Questions: Would this problem be easier if I modified the wired system configuration to use DHCP instead of fixed IPs? By the way, the Netopia Router will assign addresses in the 192.168.0 to 192.168.15 range, no others.
    4. Double Bonus Questions: What are the responses to the above questions, if instead of serving the wireless from one of the desktops, we added a wired/wireless router, say, a D-LINK WBR1310B1 to the LAN? Yes, it's true, we have already tried that. (Our teenager bought and installed it without my...help.) It worked for a while, something unknown changed, and now wiring up the D-LINK brings down the entire LAN. In other words, what are the "issues" of running wired AND wirelessly, and using Airport remotes with a foreign (non-Apple) wireless router?
    TIA,
    Henry

    1. Is there a way of configuring the MacBooks so they will work without the requirement switching the Location when removing or connecting a LAN cable?
Yes, but it's a little freaky (in other words, using the Location menu is the better solution).
To do what you want you need to setup the wireless network on the desktop using a different subnet (e.g. 10.1.x.x) and enable internet sharing (System Preferences -> Sharing).
Then connect the MacBook to the wireless network and make sure it's set for DHCP (the desktop Mac will act as a DHCP server for the wireless network).
Now the kicker is to use MacBook's System Preferences -> Network -> Set Service Order to make sure the ethernet interface is above the AirPort interface. Now the MacBook will use the ethernet interface if it's there and fall back to the AirPort if the ethernet is down.
    2. Can this configuration also accommodate what is needed for typical hotspots out there in "the outside world", as in coffee-shops, etc, again without switching the Network Preference Location?
Yes. Most hot-spots will require the use of DHCP on the client, which is the same as how it's set above.
    3. Bonus Questions: Would this problem be easier if I modified the wired system configuration to use DHCP instead of fixed IPs?
Yes, but not significantly enough to worry about.
What are the responses to the above questions, if instead of serving the wireless from one of the desktops, we added a wired/wireless router, say, a D-LINK WBR1310B1 to the LAN?
The setup on the client would be the same - the main point is in setting the interface preferences so that the wired ethernet has precedence.
However, a dedicated base station will offer other advantages such as WPA encryption (the Mac-based base station only offers the weaker WEP), and no requirement to leave the desktop Mac running.
From a 'which base station' standpoint, the Apple base stations would be easier to run in an all-Mac environment, but most of the major brands now use web-based interfaces which make them reasonably easy to manage from a Mac. The issue with your D-Link is almost certainly one of misconfiguration rather than incompatibility, but without knowing how it was setup it's hard to advise further.

  • Network settings lost after update to 10.5.7 after each shutdown

After my machine is shutdown or restarted my airport settings are lost and my mac fails to connect to my network. Each time I reboot the mavhine i have to manually enter the network details.
In my case, my router is not broadcasting the SSID (which is more safe) and airport is not recognize it anymore. the connection information stills on network preferences but the system does not use it, or does not check the SSID, or does not reconnect, or i dont know. So i have to manually enter the network details again
is there anyone with the same experience ???
    brgds,
    Paulo

    G'day Paulo,
The hidden SSID is [not much safer|http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3576541] than a broadcast one. It will stop only the most casual of snoopers from trying to get in.
Security will primarily come from a good WPA2 pre-shared key (64 bits long, nice and random, changed periodically). Even a determined hacker will find it very hard to get in with this.
With regard to your problem, it might be a good idea to delete the access point settings on your Mac, set the router to broadcast and then see what happens.
If you are determined to hide your SSID, you can do that after you get the basic connection working again.
    Cheers,
    Rodney

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.
