Network settings high-jacked by another app

My eMac wouldn't recognize the ethernet cable that I've been using for six months(tried a different cable and I tried a usb dongle with no luck), so I plugged it up to my laptop and it works perfectly (which rules out the modem and the cable). I ran Network Diagnostics which said that it was an ISP problem.
I opened the network pane in System Preferences and a dialogue box popped up that says: "Your network settings have been changed by another application." It has an "O.K." button which you can push to make that same box pop back up (repeatedly).
I can't find/don't know where to look for an application that's jacking my network. I can't find/don't know where to look for any information relating to this problem.
PLEASE HELP

Thanks for the thread suggestions which worked well at removing the annoying/looping dialogue box. However, I still can't retake control of my ethernet connection.
I repaired permissions and "rebuilt" my SystemConfiguration folder. When I try to renew my DHCP lease to get a valid IP address, it doesn't do anything other than give me a local IP address that doesn't work (I don't know if I'm explaining this clearly enough and I'm certain I'm leaving something out).
When I check System Preferences/Network/Show/Network Status it says: "Built-in ethernet is active. Built-in ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet."
My problems started after a security update (like a lot of other people), even though the guy on the phone at Apple Support told me that there was "NO WAY" that an update would do this.
Thanks again...

  • Your network settings were changed by another program

I changed the settings on my DSL modem-router so that it signs me in and handles PPPoE, not the Mac. When I attempted to change the setting on my PowerBook Ti to DHCP, using the network part of system preferences, I got a dialog box saying "Your network settings were changed by another program". I could dismiss this window only by quitting immediately after trying to dismiss the dialog box. After a couple of tries system preferences would quit. I can however access the internet through AirPort and the same DSL modem-router. Does anyone know how I can change my ethernet setting to DHCP so that I can surf the web using ethernet?

To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

  • Continual warning - network settings reset by another app

I noticed when going onto my network settings i was getting a continual message pop up warning of this but by clicking ok the message appeared to reload so continually trying to work in the network profile became impossible. There does not appear to be any application running that could do this . The mac is connected to the internet over a wifi connection though an airport express.
this message sonetimes used to arise when i was having internet connection problems and using the network connection wizard to fix might change the settings i have never seen anything else do it. I eventually was able t ostop the pop up only be managing to click on the lock preventing further change.
I am however concerned that maybe an external source had been able to access and control this preference pane. and that this might be a hostile rather than benign attack. I am running appavhe and rely on port forwarding from the airport express to control access which was hwo various apple technical notes explained how i should set this network up as the integrated firewall would be of little use given i am also running an internal network with 3 macs using wifi

It's not an outside attack. hpr3's help/link is great, just to add...

  • Safari and other Apple Apps don't recognize a change in location in Network Settings

I use my MBP on 2 networks. One at home without a proxy and another at the office with a Proxy. I used the location setting from network settings, but since Mountain Lion, I get problems to let Safari recognize the change and use/not use the proxy.
When I do a location change, Safari, Mail, App Store had trouble to access the Internet. I have to close all the apps, open again, disconnect and connect the network cable again, go to network settings and disable the proxy then apply, then enable again and apply.
After some of this combinations the Apps can reach the Internet again.
Any advice? I change from networks at least one per day and is really frustrating try to reconnect after every location change.

Holy moly! This was driving me nuts and it was the simplest of problems. The application status was set to "Available" rather than "Available with Edit Links"!!!
I swear I didn't make that change. It must have been my evil sleepwalking developer alter ego!! ;-> All good to go. Thanks for putting up with my posting.

  • "Network settings have be changed by another application" stuck in loops

I have the exact problem as others with Network System Preferences saying that the settings have been changed by another application. The message goes into a loop that can only be stopped with a Force Quit of the Preferences. I also have the Airport not connecting at start-up without choosing the Network Name from the Airport Pull down menu. I also think it may have started with the last Security upgrade and Java upgrade. I have used the airport utility to reconfig the base station. I discovered a system keychain with a password for the airport that my normal passwords would not open to show what it's password was. I have done many disk permissions and verifications. Any ideas? I would think if this is a Security update error, that Apple would be aware of it by now and post a repair. I have followed some threads on this issue but would rather wait for an Apple fix. There appears to be no way to contact Apple in customer support.

A Fix for "Your network preferences have been changed by another application" Error
In the Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder delete the following:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    com.apple.nat.plist
You will have to re-configure all your network settings since deleting these files will cause them to be returned to defaults.

my iphone will no longer connect to my home wifi. it recognises it, but the searching cirlce is constant next to network name. there are three laptops and another iphone on the same wifi that have no connectivity issues. i have reset the network settings but that did not help. the issue started last week when the second iphone was introduced to the house, could this be the cause?

    No.
Any problem connecting your iPhone to any other wi-fi network besides your own?

  • My Network settings are being changed by another program??

When i open up system preferences>network an alert window pops up to say "your network settings have been changed by another program"...so naturally i click the 'o.k' button to get rid of it, but it immediately pops up again.
So its impossible to make changes in my network settings because it'll keep popping up, meaning the only way to close system preferences is to force quit.
What could this other program be? could it be my ISP (virgin media) messing about with my settings?
so until i can fix my problem i cant even change any of the settings in the 'network' panel of 'system preferences'.......and you guys ideas to fix this would be appreciated!!

This recently happened to me. Go to System Prefs, Security. Click on Require Password to Unlock each secure system preference. That should do it. After you fix it, go in to security prefs again to uncheck it, or you will have to enter password each time you want to change any system prefs.

    Hi, dansamson.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend going through the steps in the article below.  If the issue persists and your device OS is up to date, I would recommend contacting the developer of the app.

  • Another Program Setting Network Settings

Just bought a 12-inch PB off eBay, and it won't log on to Facebook.
Thinking perhaps there is an issue with Virus scan or firewall, I want to Network Settings.
But I can't do anything with Network settings. It's stuck in a loop of telling me that network settings have been reset by another program. Every time I click OKAY, the dialog box almost immediately comes back up.
This loop just continues without allowing me to make any changes.
    Running Tiger.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

If you are using dhcp your ip is dynamic and it will change. I always use ip's, but I'm on a small home network and can use nmap to find the ip's of the hosts on the network, but you may need to address the other hosts on the network via the hostname if you have many hosts. If you have a dns I think there is a command like nslookup that will give you a list of host names. On a terminal, try "man -k host" to get a listing of all the commands to get the hostnames.

  • Loosing network settings after cloning a working installation to another machine

    Hi all,
we're actually preparing a basic installation for a few users for testing Mavericks in our environment.
Everything seems to work fine except the network settings. If we clone to exactly the same machine type (eg. MacMini 4,1) all works nicely but when we colne to a MacMini 5,3 all settings are gone (DNS, domains, IPv6, proxy).
The settings seem to live in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ and dropping the files "preferences.plist" and/or "NetworkInterfaces.plist" from one machine to another breaks the settings.
Is there a new place to put a kind of default netork settings plist that isn't overwritten or corrupted when copied?
Hope you habe some hints to me!  Thanxx...          A3k

    Hi all,
since we didn't found a solution for this we stopped trying to put the network settings in the template but instead we setup the network with a little shell script at first start using "networksetup".
Thanks for taking a look...      A3k

  • Transfer Network settings from one machine to another?

I'd like to transfer my Network locations on my old PowerBook running Panther to my new one that's running Tiger. What files would I have to move over? Is there an easier way to export these settings and import them into the new machine?

You can use the Migration Assistant to bring over network settings from one Mac OS X installation to another. The transfer can be done through FireWire or from another drive connected directly to the computer.
