Network Settings not retained

I have a problem with my iBook G4. I'm operating 10.4.11 and when I go into Network, I constantly receive the message "You settings have been reset by another program". It won't retain my preferences, including my network name and password, so I have to reconnect to the network every time I turn the computer on. The message pops up every couple of seconds, so I have to press enter while hovering my cursor over Assistant. Any ideas?

  • Wireless Network Settings not Retained

Signs - when the laptop is disconnected from the network (either when the computer goes into standby or is shut down) all of the wireless network configurations are lost and I can't work out how to save them.
    Network Setup:
    Router - Linksys WAG54G v.2
    Broadcast SSID - Disabled
Security Mode - WEP 128 bit 26 Hex
MAC address restriction - Enabled (I can connect to network so it's not this)
    Authentication Type - Auto
    Control TX Rate - Auto
Basically every time I need to connect to the network I have to enter in the SSID and the WEP Key. I've attempted to do this in Internet Connect, Network Preferences, and in the Airport menu. None of these give me the option to save the preferences.
At the moment I have the WEP key saved in a word document so I can copy and paste it in, but there's gotta be a better way than that!
    Any help would be appreciated

I'm also haveing the same problem, have you come across a solution yet?

  • Folder view settings not retained in Leopard

Anyone else seen this problem ?
I like to have different folders with different view settings - some icon, some list, and now some coverflow. But, it doesn't retain these settings, it just reverts to whatever view I was looking at last, and applies that to all folders.
    This is intensely annoying !
Tiger didn't used to do that.
    Is there a solution ?

I've done that. I have all my folders set to open in Icon view except my Music folder, which is set for List view, but I still have the problem with the settings not sticking.
I'm not sure if this is related, but when I got back a folder, the Finder doesn't always remember where I was, ie., I'll be at the bottom of my Applications folder, go to the Utilities folder and then go back to Applications at the top.)

  • General Settings not retained when connecting via VPN

    Forum,
We have a user who connects to SAP via a VPN connection. Since then they have found that any form settings/column amendments made are not being retained when next logging into SAP.
When these changes were made direct in the office, they are retained.
My question. Is there any differences in how the settings are retained within SAP when accessing via a VPN?
    Regards,
    Juan

    Hi,
When using your VPN are yo using Terminal LIcense or Remote Desktop Connection?
Please do the following to save form settings:
    1. Only 1 module should be open when using form settings.
Close other modules that doesn't need.
    2. Close the module after changed. To make sure the settings are saved.
    3. Always close all the module before exiting SBO program, use the click FIle and Exit habit.
    4. Terminal Licensing should be use when connecting remotely.
    Thanks.

  • Volume settings not retained

    Hi guys,
I have been having a problem with my Mac Book from the start. According to what I have read on the Internet my Intel based Mac Book should retain volume settings separately for my headphones and my internal speakers.
Meaning that once I have changed the settings for the volumes it should set the correct volume if I connect my headphones or use my internal speakers. This does happen and work normally.
However after restarting my Mac Book volume settings are not retained and once I connect my headphones the volume is set to 56%. Similarly this happens for my internal speakers as well.
This also describes my problem http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=88936
Could someone help me out with this, I have already reset my PRAM and NVRAM
So the option described on this page does not work for me.

I have suffered this problem too.
Both pair of my headphones, one came with iPod, are loud enough at 6%.
56% is surely going to kill my ears.
I've been googling around and found no solution.
But this is not the most depressing thing.
Let's take a look at this

    *Last Modified: March 08, 2007*
Obviously Apple was aware of this problem two years ago. And the only solution is to "adjust the volume level and balance as desired after restarting the computer."
    Waht the __?!
This is not even a real solution.
Why wounldn't OS X just remember custom volume settings for headphones?
When are you going to correct this issue any way?

  • Why are Network Settings not Transferring from a Master DMG to the Desitination

    Hi people,
can anyone assist me with finding out why Network Settings are NOT transferred from a source Master HD to a DMG to a Destination HD.
I have many hours spent trying to debug this - any pointers to a solution would be greatly appreciated.
    Background:
I administer about 400 Macs of mixed types / generations (iMacs - MacBooks - MacBook Pro's).
We create master setups for different locations / purposes around the Campus and transfer these masters to DMGs.
We then clone the various macs as needed from these DMGs using a variety of methods including local (FW800 - USB) and network transfers.
The newest master (staffHD at 10-8-2) works perfectly but trying to clone / copy it by any method leaves out the custom network settings and you only end up with the default Wi-Fi / Ethernet / Firewire with total loss of the additional services and custom proxy settings.
Methods used to date to try the transfer (all get the same null result)
    to-from DMG using Disk Utility
to-from Sparse Image via Disk Utility
to-from DMG using Carbon Copy Cloner
to-from Sparse Image via Carbon Copy Cloner
direct to 'target disk' via FW800 using Disk Utility
direct to 'target disk via FW800 using Carbon Copy Cloner
direct to 'target disk via FW800 using rsync -aHv
direct to 'target disk via FW800 using cp -Rv
Everything BUT the network settings transfer perfectly (excluding of course the usual trackpad / mouse custom settings).
I guess something is wrong with this master source but for the life of me I can't work it out. I have seen it in the past but it seemed to work itself out with the next revision - this one just wont.
    HELP!
    Have a Great day!

    Hi Linc,
thanks for the reply - I suspected a hardware issue or some sort of privledges problem, but as far as I know have only had this problem with Mountain Lion, and it still fails on hardware like to like transfers. I was hoping to avoid needing anything addidtional but it looks like I'll have to.
    Have a Great day!

  • Printer settings not retained in preferences

    Hey Everyone
I need a little help. An error occurs everytime I try to select my Canon MP460 from the printer Preferences menu in the System Preferences window. I click the add button, it shows up with the driver and location filled in the pull down menus/boxes. Then I hit the Add button and a message comes up "An error occurred while tryint to add the selected printer. The printing service is not available."
I have tried holding the control button down and resetting the printer settings. To no avail. I did go to Terminal and type Sudo Cupsd.
That worked and loaded my printer. BUT, after I rebooted the machine, the settings were lost and I received the same error message as above when trying to add the printer again. So it seems I have to go to Terminal everytime I boot and type "Sudo cupsd" to load my printer.
Any thoughts? Thanks (I also trashed the printing preference files (plist) in an attempt to fix this problem, again to no avail.

Fixed the problem. Thanks for reading my question. For those with this problem, I found permissions errors on the org.cups.cupsd.plist file in Launch Daemons, which is strange considering I do not remember touching this file in any way. But after the repair, I opened the System Preferences:Printer and Fax settings. It gave me the error. I used Terminal and typed in "Sudo cupsd" and then my password. This allows the Printer/Fax Settings to be set in System Preferences without any errors. I set the printer as the default in Printer Settings, I restarted and it retained everything.

  • Phone settings not retained once they are set

    Hi everyone,
Has anyone had the unfortunate experience of your settings such as sound, weather, mail, etc. not being retained after making changes to them? My wife just bought this iPhone for me a few days ago and it is updated with the latest version 1.1.4. Also iTunes version is 7.6.2.9.
How does iPhone retain it's settings? Is it a built in battery like an old CMOS battery?
I have performed all of the resets that Apple recommends. It's really going to be uncool to have to replace it after 2 days of use.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Does all of the resets that Apple recommends includes a Reset and a Restore which are different?
The settings are not built in the battery. They are stored in the "Other" designation along with the Music, Video, and Photos designation.
iTunes creates and maintains a backup of your iPhone, which includes your iPhone settings along with any other data not included with the sync process, such as SMS messages, notes created with the Notes application, recent calls, and call favorites.
There are two options when restoring an iPhone - from your iPhone's backup, and as a new iPhone or not from the backup.
If something went awry with your iPhone's backup (which shouldn't occur often), and you restore your iPhone from the backup, you are restoring the same problem.
If you have restored your iPhone from your iPhone's backup and not as a new iPhone, try the latter to see if this makes any difference.
If this doesn't work, as uncool as it may be, you may need to have your iPhone exchanged under warranty if AppleCare or an Apple Store is unable to resolve this for you by any other means.

  • Settings not retained after a few days of non-use

If I don't use the iPod for a few days, when I turn it on I see the menu for selecting my language. Then I also have to reset my contrast and main menu options, etc. Essentially, my settings are not being retained.
I can understand the appearance of the Apple logo as the iPod restarts, but I shouldn't have to keep recreating my settings. It didn't used to do this.

    Hi Michael
Have you had any answers to this as i'm expierencing the same problem.
If my g3 ipod has not been used for a few days, when i switch it on the contrast as at factory setting & the language option screen is displayed.
Again like yourself i did not used to have this problem
i'll keep checking this site for updates however if you have managed to resolve this i would be greatful if you could advise

  • Network settings not sticking?

Noob (Win convert) question, I think.
Leopard 10.5 with DHCP enabled on my home and work networks. All settings from the DHCP servers come across and are correct in the Network prefernces. But, when I open the Network preferences panel and select Advanced - then add a new DNS server, and then add a WINS server, and also change the workgroup from "blank" to WORKGROUP. I do an apply, go back in to verify the settings and all that remains is the new DNS server I added. The WINS entries are gone as is the WORKGROUP. I tried doing this several different ways all having the same result. If I don't hit the apply button, it's all there, but once it applies, it disappears and I can't make the settings stick.
Thanks and apologies to all if this issue is know (I searched but found nada in these forums).

Thx for the quick reply Nerowolfe...
I did do as you said and a few other ways also in trying to troubleshoot this, but it still doesn't save the settings. Setting the lock on does no good since the settings disappear after the "Apply" button is pressed. You have to "Apply" before you lock.
    Very confusing....
I'm an old *nix guy, so I thought I'll just shell in and change the files manually. Did that, but if I opened Network Prefernces again and changed anything, it reverted the files back.
    Very, very confusing....
I have only one setting - in DNS - but it stays there. I never used WINS.
You might see if you can do it with another user with admin privs as a test.
Also if you haven't, run DU and check the HD and repair permissions.
Barring that, you may have a corrupted .plist that needs trashing. Sometimes the preference file for a group of settings gets corrupted and by dragging it to the desktop the system creates a new one. This could work, but there are not guarantees.
The .plist files are in User->Library->Preferences. I don't know of a good list of which plist goes with which preferences other than that the names are sometimes (but not always) helpful

  • Input source settings not retained after log out/restart

    Hi,
This was happening in Mavericks as well, and I have just upgraded to 10.10.1 hoping it would solve the issue.
I frequently need two input sources (US and Czech QWERTY Keybaords) for my workflow. But everytime I logout or restart, the computer resets the input source to Czech (not QWERTY). I have never selected this keyboard, but it always resets to this default.
Is there a plsit file or something I can delete? I bought the computer used from a friend in the Czech Republic, but I am Aermican and would prefer default system languages and keyboards to be US English. I do, however, need the region settings set to Czech Republic as that's where I work. So, calendar, numbers, currency etc. should be Czech, but all other system language US English.
    Thanks for any help.

    Its OK
Updating the driver worked, seems it wasnt binding the NVIDIA Config to the xserver

  • Some system settings not retained after restart

In Snow Leopard, after a restart, the sound volume setting defaults to 50% and some Finder window views settings change (icon view becomes list view) or a cleaned up window reverts to jammed up icons. Additionally, iTunes always asks to allow incoming connections even after using the Security setting to allow them. Reset the PRAM but the problem persists. Is anyone else having these problems and is there a solution?

I updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain  Lion and blow me down, full control of the startup sound has returned !
Maybe the Apple Store put something into the PRAM which was ML specific.  I don't know.  It's just working now.
Sorry I can't help explain what to do.

  • View settings not retained

I prefer to use the Column view and have set it as my default view. However, this week when I first open a window of my hard drive, it is opening in Icon view. I've tried changing it but if I close the window, the next time I open it it is back in Icon view. What could be the problem? Would deleting the com.apple.windowserver.plist help?

You're not going to believe this but yesterday I downloaded PlistEdit Pro and used it to open the com.apple.finder.plist. While I had it open, I opened my hard drive and changed the view from Icon to Column. I then closed the hard drive and after a minute or so re-opened it. It was still at Column view! Ok so I closed it again and also closed PlistEdit Pro. This morning I opened the hard drive again and the view had stayed at Column view.
I guess that View "saw" that I had the plist open and became scared I would do something so it decided to obey my selection.
    Happy Easter!

Could I be having these issues because I am using a monitor and keyboard not a console cable?
Old style console cable not available. equipment is difficult to procure because I'm in the middle of nowhere.
Could the issues be because of the 64bit architecture of WAE-674 i.e could I be using the wrong recovery disk?
Attached are images of the device booting when recovery CD is not inside the device.

    Hi Kristof,
The problem is that as soon as the serial port becomes active, the device stops displaying the output to the screen/keyboard so you'll really need an "old style" console cable to see what is really happening with your device.
    More info: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/wae/installation/7341-7371/guide/7341gd/7300intr.html#wp1040804
You can connect a keyboard to any USB port and connect a monitor to the video connector to troubleshoot the BIOS boot process. However, video output is for troubleshooting only during the BIOS boot process. The video output stops displaying when the serial port becomes active. To monitor the boot process in normal operation, use the serial console port.
The Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) connector is not supported.
The systems-management Ethernet connector is not supported.
