Network setup - how secure it should be?

Hi Folks,
for the first time I try to setup a small network. Behind a firewall I run a DMZ and a LAN.
Now I was thinking to install oracle on a seperate subnet calling this DB-LAN...
Would it be usefull / necessary to secure connections from my DMZ to the DB-LAN by using the Oracle connection manager or is usually the traffic between DMZ and databases open on all ports?
Any advise would be appreciated

Hi Krystian,
thanx for your reply. Basically I would like to secure my database in case the servers on my DMZ are corrupted. According to that I think using CMAN should be sufficient as communication takes place inside my local network.
May I kindly ask the community for some help regarding this issue as I found loads of examples and posts concerning cman - but no real step by step tuto for all the network/admin/ files when having two instances on 10gR2 connected via cman...
any help yould be appreciated

  • Wired network setup - how?

Haven't setup a network before, and would like to use my BT Business Hub router to help me do it. Would also like my old Powerbook G4 to connect to shared drives. What do I need to do?
My BT Business Hub supplies broadband internet access. The MBP picks it up wirelessly and works well. The Hub has 4x Ethernet sockets.
I know I need to connect the PBG4 to the Hub. But how do I actually setup the network? And how do I share drives?
    Any advice much appreciated.

"so, if i want both wired gigabit and wireless apple-n, will the following work (and/or is it conigured appropriately):
    (internet) >> (wired router) >> (wired-8-port switch) >> (7 network wired nodes) + (AEBSn-wireless)"
Yes, you just need to set up the AEBSn as a bridge so that the existing wired router will continue to provide NAT & DHCP services for the entire network. Note, however, any devices attached, via Ethernet, to the AEBSn will only be capable of 100 Mbps, regardless of the AEBSn connected to a 1000 Mbps circuit.
"so, then the followup question: will the Dlink (or other) wireless-n router (with gigabit switch) work to stream airtunes? if it could, the network could be:
    (internet) >> (wireless-n router w/gigabit switch) >> (wired-8-port switch) >> (7 network nodes)"
Yes. You just need to add the AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) as wireless clients to the existing DLink wireless network.

  • How to setup the security based on roles in Organization.

    Hi,
How to setup the security based on roles in Organization.
For example:Few users are Manager and a few user are Non Manager .Manager should have access to all work data including Non Manager and Non Manager should access based role. How to setup this? How OBI server identify the user role?
    kindly let me know.
    Regards.,
    CHR

    Hi,
You need to have Back End support to achieve this. In Back End you need to create two groups . You need to know what joins has to be made for which group (which is more important) and also make session variable for the userrole (with SQL supporting it). In the BMM layer, we need to put the security join conditions in the 'where clause'.
And make a common report. User loggin in with the respective userid will have userrole and joins assigned in the Back end. And they will be viewing the report according to their access.
Hope this will solve your problem.

You will have to contact iTunes Support and tell them you have forgotten your Security Questions and need them reset. They will respond to you by email, usually within 24 hours. Here are two links to contact iTunes Support:

    Hey 6bigdog6,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like the album has been synced to your iPhone from iTunes. To delete synced photos, you’ll want to uncheck the album in iTunes:
    iTunes: Syncing photos
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4236
To delete synced photos and videos from your device
    1. In iTunes, click the Device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner first.)
    2. Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
    3. Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
Note: To delete all synced photos, deselect "Sync Photos from" and, when asked, click "Remove photos."
    4. Click Apply.
    Thanks,

  • How secure is an open wireless network?

    Hello everyone,
I'd like to get your opinion on the following:
Situation: Staying at a Motel with free wireless. It's completely unsecure- I managed to log onto the Wireless Router with a blank password and if I wanted to, could seriously mess around with the settings, e.g. block out all Mac addresses other than my own, change base ID, enable WEP etc. The Motel employees are clueless about this and don't know anything about it other than making sure the wireless AP is plugged in and blinking.
I'd like to check my banking statements online (Https of course) and am pondering the following:
How secure is my connection? Could someone feasibly run a wireless sniffer like Airsnort and capture my id and password to my online bank? Is there anyway I can protect myself against such attacks?
    Thanks for you input.
    -Rich

Could someone feasibly run a wireless sniffer like Airsnort and capture my id and password to my online bank?
It's possible, though any commercial entity such as a bank runs their web site such that account names and passwords are encrypted from your browser (that's what HTTPS does). So anyone wanting to grab your information would have to not only sniff the stream at exactly the right time (or capture a lot of data and try and sort it out), they'd have to then break the encryption. It's possible but it's not trivial, so very few people waste their time trying, just for a single account. Most such crooks spend their time trying to hack the servers at the bank or company where they can harvest hundreds or thousands of accounts, not just one.
So is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? No.

  • How much bandwidth should use a network game?

    Hi,
I'm making a platform game, I think it is very minimal, it is a scrolling level with 20 or 30 elements per time and a refresh every 40ms
It uses about 1.6MB/minute i think it is so much or not?? how many data should exchange an economical multiplayer game??

    Yeah,
today i've iproved my algorithm, now it uses only *0.4kB/min* !
I'm planning to implement something like interpolation of the moving objects (in respect to the main character)
does exists any "famous" or "official" protocol for client server gaming?

  • Remote network setup help

I have an iMac at home and I want to access the files on my iMac in the office. I also want others who have PC's to get to the files at the office. I have a Airport base station at my office. All computers have access to broadband. Do I have to setup a vpn? How do you do that? I also want to let others outside my office get to a filemaker database I shared out via the web in my office. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

have an iMac at home and I want to access the files on my iMac in the office.
This is very straightforward. Setup your airport base station if it is acting as your router to port forward tcp port 22 to the ip address of your mac.
Then turn on remote login in the sharing preferences.
Then use a SFTP client such as transmit to login to your mac using its WAN IP address.
I also want others who have PC's to get to the files at the office. I have a Airport base station at my office.
This changes things a bit as you what do you do if you now want a secure connection such as SFTP to all the computers on the network.
Well now you should consider getting a VPN server. You could invest in some server software such as OSX server. Then you could setup a central file server in the office. This could run your filemaker database. It could also be the central fileserver all your pc and mac users store their files on.
Then the office staff could login using VPN clients on their mac's or pc's at home. Once logged in they could access the main server or their own desktop pc's using windows file sharing.
The other option would be to use a hardware VPN router using security such as IPsec. You would then need to get a static ip from your ISP. You would need to consider how sophisticated router you get. i.e how many simultaneous connections would you need.
If this all seems to much trouble for you learn about then I would advice you get a pro mac network guy in to set this up for you.

  • All Mac network setup?

    Hello all!
This is my first post here. Thanks for taking the time to help me with an answer to my question below.
I work for a small graphic design firm. We all work on iMacs here in our office (6 Macs total) with the exception of two PCs (1 for receptionist, 1 for data backup), and after a recent virus (Cryptolocker) hit one of our networked PCs, we're looking at going "all Mac" with our setup (if it's possible). I am here to ask for hardware/setup recommendations.
We have just a few needs as we plan our new network setup:
    1) A central file repository with at least 4 - 5 TB of storage space for shared files, which all 6 Mac computers must have access to;
    2) It has to be a wired network (for fastest file transfer speeds & security -- we already have tons of Cat5 cable installed);
    3) A way to backup the central repository to a Cloud service automatically on a nightly basis.
We looked at a Time Capsule, but they max out at 3 TB and we weren't sure if 1) we could daisy chain multiples, and 2) whether they can be backed up to cloud storage in any way.
I am wide open to suggestions on what we need to buy in order to set up the kind of network that we need. I am a Mac convert, so I don't know all there is to know about networking Macs either, so treat me like a 10 year old kid when it comes to explaining/outlining what gear you think we should buy, what hooks up to what, and the system/hardware settings we may need.
I appreciate the time that any of you are willing to take to outline this for me. Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise!

    Tesserax,
I have purchased a Western Digital My Cloud 2TB. Need Simple Step by Step guide for Optimal Apple Eco Setup, Sync, Organize, Maintain and Secure my media while freeing storage space on all devices, and maintaining anywhere accessibilty.
Western Digital has setup the drive on the network and it is recognized by iTunes, but they do not want me to move the libraries. iPhoto can import the My Cloud media into its library. They suggest copy'n'paste all media into the My Cloud public folders of Video, Photos and Music then delete the media from the devices. I dont see how you can Sync the iPhones, (future iPads), without moving the libraries, after all the object is to free space on the devices including the MacBooks.
How do I include the My Cloud into the MacBook Pro's Mountain Lion 10.8.5 TimeMachine Backup? (Leave MacBook Leopard 10.5.8 TimeMachine Backup for laptop only)
    I have:
2 Users that want to keep their media in separate folders, but would be nice to have a choice between joint or separate viewing ability
    MacBook Leopard 10.5.8
    MacBook Pro Mountain Lion 10.8.5
    2 iPhone 4 - 32GB
    Apple TV 2
Time Capsule 2TB (TimeMachine Backups only)
Western Digital (Media Only - perhaps some documents)

  • What would be the best network setup for me?

I am planning a network system for my medical practise. The network will comprise a Macbook Pro(myself) , an Imac(receptionist) and a Macbook for occassional admin use.
I need some advice as to the best way to store the shared data. I will be using Filemaker Pro and will be storing patient appointments, demographics as well as clinical info, visit notes and investigations.
I am considering 3 possible setups
Have shared database on the Imac, backed up by a 500 gigabyte hard disk, or possibly a time capsule, using Time machine.
Have an ethernet hard disk for storage, but then I probably would need to have a different backup system.
Use a mac mini as a file server.
Or use an altogether different setup.
    I would appreciate suggestions.
    Thank you
    ajdk

    Hi ajdk-
Then it comes down to your morals and how carefully you want or need to protect patient confidentiality. Your basic network concept should work.
As a start, storing any patient data with regular business data and emails is asking for a security breach.
Make sure to back up your back ups and store said backup securely in a media-rated fire proof vault.
    These documents may help:
    Creating a small Ethernet network
AirPort Base Station and Network Setup Guide (Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier)

  • How secure is USB disk file data over the Internet?

I have an Airport Extreme with an external USB drive attached. I can successfully connect to the drive both from the internal network (LAN) and from the Internet. I have secured my drive using user accounts granting either read-only or read-write access. When connecting from the Internet, how secure is the data when it is being transferred over the Internet between the USB drive and my remote device (Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc.)?

Thank you, Kappy. I sincerely appreciate your input.
It appears that the Airport Express "Share On WAN Port" is not really a secure connection. File data is not secure as it is transferred over the Internet, which is what I suspected. So, in order to secure the data one would need to establish a VPN (or equivalent) connection to the local network and then access the Airport Extreme disk data via the VPN connection. I should note that in this scenario the "Share On WAN Port" would not be needed and should probably be disabled. For me, a VPN connection is necessary unless I only want to store and share files and data that I don't mind others obtaining while in transmission.
This is what I expected, but was hoping for something along the lines of what Apple's Messages does, which encrypts data from end-to-end between two (or more) users in a conversation to ensure the data/content is secure.
    Thanks again.

  • How secure is JInitiator

    Hi,
I was wondering how secure is network-transport when using Oracle's JInitiator. Especially when you enter your password. Can it be read by sniffers? Is there some standard encription enabled? I'm NOT using SSL (and I'm not planning to use it).
Thanks in advance for your attention.
    Jos Baan

But people IN the network might be interested in password of others. How do you block them?Block them from doing what? The question is, "How would they get access to the passwords?" The answer to that, determines what you do to block them.
When you submit data from a PC to a network, the network routers route the data to the appropriate destination. They don't send your data to every PC on the network. Just because you are on a network, doesn't mean you have access to all traffic in the network.
If the Intranet is physically secure, then you can not access the network. If you can't access the network, you can't install sniffers and access the network traffic (or passwords) threrein. If a user is looking over someone's shoulder as they type in a password, then the application shouldn't be showing passwords.
Is there a specific scenerio that you are concerned about?

  • Network.disable.ipc.security is set true. Is that good?

Whilst removing the AVG Secure Search virus from my wife's laptop, I have discovered, in about:config, a key, network.disable.ipc.security which is set true. This does not strike me as correct, but I do not know ... What does this key do? Can I, should I change it? What will happen to FF?
    Thanks,
    Harvey

Tried it, didn’t work, how ever I do believe that it’s the 3945ABG card have a problem, since my old IBM R50 doesn’t have any problem with the WRT54G router version 7. But it’s strange that the WRT54G router that is sold with firmware version 5 don’t have the problem!? The last one of the WRT54G router with firmware version 5 that I bought, is even updated to the newest version of firmware that are available for that version, and it still works ok with the 3945ABG card, so Linksys do seems to have a problem too, regarding the 7 version that are sold  in Europe. Do you have any other suggestion to fix the problem?
To fix the problem her and now, I had to buy a second-hand WRT54G router with firmware version 5, how ever I still got the router with firmware version 7, and still want to find a solution to the problem with this version.
I and my company won’t buy any new WRT54G router before this problem is fixed! And as long as the problem isn’t fixed we will for sure not recommend it to anyone who asked us for advice regarding routers. Because you have to remember that quite a lot of the new portable pc’s that is sold to day, is sold with the 3945ABG card.

  • How secure

How secure is a wifi network compared to an ethernet? In the past I heard that running your bank account on a wifi network is like screaming your SS# out to the public if there was one person trying to get it. Is that still the case or are these things secure enough for a public business?

Another thing is to make sure that you're on a secure site when you're putting in bank account numbers and such (pretty well any bank should be secure). Even with unencrypted wireless the traffic going from you to the bank should be encrypted. Example:
If I was doing packet sniffing on your unencrypted wireless I could see the destination of your packets (as could anyone that managed to capture the traffic floating around on the Internet), but the contents of the packets will be encrypted and unreadable by me - assuming that your bank is using SSL (general rule is an SSL connection will show up as https://www.yourbank.com - note the addition of the "s" to the "http"). If your bank doesn't use SSL - run away...run far away and move your money to a different bank.
