Network share problems Mac OS 10.4.x

I'm running Windows Server 2003 Standard edition which I'm using for around 500 users. We have 30 Mac's also connecting to this server, however the mac's seem unable to use files directly from the network, especially Quark files. Quark grey's out the Save button and only allows Save As.. when you click save as the file is renamed to lots of numbers.qxp, I don't have the same problem if the file is saved locally. I thought 10.4.7 would fix the problem but it doesn't (another bit of good testing by Apple). Anyone having the same problem?
Lets compare sizes   Windows XP Pro   Extremely annoyed Mac/PC admin
  Windows XP Pro

This problem only appeared after 10.4 was installed, so it's not really a quark problem. I have 1 10.3.9 Mac on the network and it does not have any of these problems.
This problem, I belive, was supposed to be fixed in 10.4.7 but it's made no difference, using SMB or AFP doesn't seem to resolve the issue either.
Permissions are locked down on the network here so I cannot give the Everyone group modify rights.

  • Loss of network share from Mac to PC

I have a lot of music / videos / pictures stored on a PC with RAID'd discs which are exposed as shares.
I mount these from my iMac and access them.
Periodically, (I think after the iMac has gone to sleep and been revived) these shares stop being accessible. The finder window opens, but there's no directories or files in them. I can't reconnect to recover the connection, but if I restart the iMac they come back.
Anyone know why, and how I can stop the connection going south for the winter when the iMac sleeps?

    Alex

Microsoft changed how SMB works for sharing with Win7, and Apple hasn't changed their sharing in response. There are some problems because of this. Usually, though, it's the WIndows box that goes to sleep and causes the connection to drop.
It's know to be a Win 7 problem as there are similar problems when Linux users try to connect, and also there were no problems with Vista or WinXP, on the same hardware. This thread <http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/75-63-windows-samba-issue> offers some solutions which might help you.

  • Network Shares, Mobile Clients, Kerberos and Single Sign On Woes

    Hi anybody,
I'm sure there is a really simple answer to my network share problems but I just can't seem to get them to work. Does anybody understand OD/Kerberos/SSO?
I am running 10.4.10 with DNS, AFP and OD.
My DNS is correctly configured, I can resolve IP into name and back again on server and client machines and it's not using a .local domain.
My OD is set up as a master with the correct LDAP search base settings, Netinfo is off for some reaseon but I can't turn it back on even if I wanted to. I have directory binding enabled as well as requiring clients to bind to directory.
My AFP is set to enable Bonjour registration and Authentication is set to Kerberos.
My client computers are able to access network accounts and my mobile clients are able to sync their home directories.
All seams to be working exceptionally well except for access to the shared network folders.
I am convinced that the network folder is set up correctly as I have RTFM many times and if I play with the acess settings such that anybody has read and write permisions, clients are able to access the data.
However, I wan't to reach my networking Nirvana where I can control access to the network share depending on group id. This shouldn't be difficult but it does seem unatainable for me .....
Having done a bit of trouble shooting and more reading, I can see that the clients are trying to access the share as an unauthenticated user ..... which is where it all goes wrong for me.
I thought that Kerberos SSO would have sorted this out but I don't think the clients are even trying to authenticate with the server as thay use the local Netinfo database to log in.
How do I get clients and mobile clients to do a Kerberised SSO at login?
    Anybody !
    Thanks in advance.

  • Network shares can't be ejected? ("Ghost" share problems)

This topic is to try to solve a problem I'm having, as well as many of my Mac friends, when they use a network share, and it then cannot be unmounted.
Basically, there are servers no longer accessible, because we switched LANs, etc.
Symptoms: in the Finder, clicking on the "Eject" button next to the computer's name gives out a dialog telling "A disk on <share name> is in use. Try close applications. (approximately).
Of course, closing all applications doesn't have any effect, neither does relaunching the Finder.
In the Terminal, the command "mount" displays, among others:
//GUEST:@ines:139/Shared Docs em Vaio1 on /Volumes/Shared Docs em Vaio1 (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by xxx)
//GUEST@ines:139/Download on /Volumes/Download (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by xxx)
I tried umount "Shared Docs em Vaio1", as well as the other share, and yet it outputs "not currently mounted"
I then did lsof to check what files were open on these share, and the output starts with lsof: WARNING: can't stat() smbfs file system /Volumes/Shared Docs em Vaio1
    Output information may be incomplete.
    assuming "dev=2d000004" from mount table
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() smbfs file system /Volumes/Download
    Output information may be incomplete.
    assuming "dev=2d000005" from mount table
I've reached the end of my meager knowledge on this issue, which is minor (in the sense that performance is not affected), but relatively present nevertheless.
Of course it goes off when rebooting, but I want to be able to solve this problem without a reboot, so how can it be?

I don't know if it is the same with SMB shares, but with AFP ones I sometimes get this message when the share point is on my MacBook & it goes to sleep. The 'solution' -- such as it is -- is just to wait for the client Mac to notice the server isn't responding & pop up a server disconnect notice on the screen. Once you click the 'ok' button in that notice, the share point disappears from the Finder & no more messages about something on it being in use appear.
This notice can take several minutes to appear. I don't know of any way to speed up the process, or if it would be wise to try. I assume the long timeout is so that brief network outages are not problematic.

  • NAS drive suddenly won't share on Mac OS X Mountain Lion network

I have several drives that I share via Mac OS X Server (recently upgraded to 2.2). All the machines are on Mountail Lion.
One of those, a backup drive (with CCC) seems not to share all of a sudden. It can be see on the local desktop. It started when the drive filled up. I looked at the drive and deleted some folders, in a sparse package made by my backup program. After that I could not unmount the drive or share it any longer on the network. I have four other drives that share, mount, dismount just fine. Not this partition. I should mention that three other partitions of the drive also cannot be seen on the network but show up on the local desktop, while the other drives can be. The unshared partitions do however appear on the server and I have examine them there. Nothing evident.
Any advice on how to proceed?
    Henry

It turns out, for some reason, with extra networking interfaces set up, it wasn't able to connect to the server, which is why it kept waiting at that stage.
Once I deleted the extra interfaces, it worked without a problem.  (I figured it had to be some kind of networking or communications issue - since it was after the network screen.  Also, if the location were the problem for execution, it should have had problems just starting up.)
I tried to move icons to the dock - as in move them from a folder so they were not shortcuts, but that the location was on the dock.  It just wouldn't do that at all - it always copied the icon to the dock and the original was still in place.

  • Problems with mount and unmount of network shares

    Hi,
I use an Apple script to mount four network shares during startup of an OS 10.4.4 Powerbook. Unfortunately it seems that Tiger can't always mount them all. Sometimes it only mounts three of them, but pressing Command + K indicates that the fourth is already mounted because it's grayed out. How come I can't see it on neither the desktop nor the favorites list in a Finder window then?
I have a Tiger installation at home with Ciscos VPN Client 4.8 installed. I use that VPN client to gain access to the company's network. When the connection is established, I mount a share (with AFP over TCP/IP) on the company's server running Win2003 and ExtremeZ-IP.
When I close down Ciscos VPN Client, the mounted network share doesn't unmount automatically, and if I forget to toss that network drive in the trash before closing down or restarting my Mac, it hangs. Why can't it just unmount that drive automatically when the VPN connection is gone?

Browsing Network Neighborhood is a function of the Microsoft browsing service. Any problems are usually because the PC or master browsers do not function properly. Network Neighborhood is officially not supported. However, it works if configured correctly. Browsing Network Neighborhood works by obtaining the browse list from either a master or backup browser. This list is obtained locally on your LAN by using NetBIOS Broadcasts to locate domain browsers.
    Inorder to resove this :
Make sure you have NetBIOS over TCP enabled on the adapter that you use to connect to the domain.

  • Windows network shares disappearing when users are logged on to Mac

We are having some problems with windows network shares disappearing when users are logged on to Mac computers.
We have a number of Mac labs that users can logon to using their AD login credentials. Their network shares are saved on a windows file server. The ad plug has been configured on each client Mac as has the LDAP plug-in. It is configured to connect to the Xserve which is running as an OD master. The system preferences for the client Macs are being managed from the Xserve.
The problem for the users is that they can log into the Mac no problem and they can see their network share appearing on the desktop and in the dock, but for some reason on random Macs and with random users the network share disappears. If they log off and log back in again the network share is still missing. As it happens randomly I can not put my finger on what the problem is.
Most labs either have Intel iMacs running 10.4.11 or Intel iMacs running 10.5.5

    Mike,
We need to know some basic scoping information to provide any further input.
    1)
Is the user prompted that the server will be shutting down?
    2)
Does Task Scheduler show that the task ran at the scheduled time?
    3)
Are there any errors in %windir%\tasks\schedlgu.txt?
    4)
Does the problem still occur if the machine is in its own OU with blocked inheritance?
Does the problem still occur in a clean boot configuration with MSConfig
    Steps to clean boot machine:
    ================
Start > Run > Msconfig > Select Services > click "check box", "Hide all microsoft services" > Disable all
Start > Run > Msconfig > Select startup>  Disable all
    Reboot

  • Problems with VPN and Windows Network Shares

I'm in the middle of a Windows domain migration and I've setup the two way trust for the domains.
Cisco VPN clients authenticate against the old domain.
A user with an account in the new domain and whos laptop is joined to the new domain (also has a user account in the old domain) can connect to the VPN but is asked for Windows authentication when they connect to a network share in either domain.
Users whos account/laptop are in the old domain don't have this issue.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

  • Unable to mount a network share drive in mac os 10.7 when logged in as root

I enabled the root account by entering sudo passwd root in the terminal window. Once the account was enabled successfully, I logged out from my admin account and logged in as root. I then attempted to mount a network share running on an Xserve and a Windows share but was unable to. I logged out as root and logged back in using my admin account and I was then able to mount both shares successfully.
Is there a new Lion security feature that prevents the root account from mounting network shares? If so how can I get around it?
    Thanks for your help.

I had the same problem. While logged in as root, I can't use an alias or Cmd+K to connect to a server, but it works fine as any other user. I tried the link above and after reading the mount_afp man page, it describes two steps needed to mount a server. Here's what I had to put in Terminal to mount a share called Installers:
The root account does not seem to be getting past the first step when using Cmd+K or an alias to a network share, although this worked in previous versions of OSX.
This problem was not fixed in 10.7.1

  • Problem with NFS file adapter using a network share as source of files

    Hello,
I have set up a sender cc with NFS format file adapter, with at the source directory a network share (
server\sharename ). The share is on another system and not mapped to a local drivename, but it is open for everybody.
The problem is, the adapter seems to not pick up the files in the directory, so there must be something I'm overlooking.
    - Both servers run on Windows
    - Share is available normally and open for everybody for all actions (including the SAPServiceSID user)
    - Files themselves are okay. If I put a file on a local drive and make the source directory the local drive instead of the network path, the file gets processed correctly
    - Because of the need for a file completion check, FTP is not an option
Does anybody know what is going wrong, or what I could check for trace / logging info on possible cause of the problem?

    Hi,
While using NFS mode you are supposed to put the file on XI server directory NOT to a common share directory of any other machine. And this is the reason your adapter in not picking the file.
You can upload the file on XI server directory by using the tcode "SXDA_TOOLS", morevere you can check the file on the same directory with tcode "AL11". It is otherway-around, you can first select or chose the dir by AL11 and then put the file in the same dir by tcode SXDA_TOOLS.
If you need more info about SXDA_TOOLS, let me know.

  • PC to  Mac: ITunes library on network share

    Hi all,
I am aware that these forums gets lots of PC -> Mac iTunes library migration questions. However, I'm having trouble with my particular situation.
Just got a new Mac Pro yesterday. It came with Tiger installed and a Leopard upgrade disc. So, I've already upgraded to Leopard. Software updater has already updated iTunes to v7.4.3. I have the iTunes library on a network share under folder called "My Music". The Mac has no issues with seeing the shared drive.
How do I go about pointing iTunes on the Mac to the library on the share? I know about holding down the option key while iTunes is starting. I've tried that but I don't know what folder or file the Mac version of iTunes is looking for. I keep getting messsages that iTunes can't find the library.
I'd like to keep the iTunes library in place but will move it if I must. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steven

Did more checking and the /My Music/itunes directory on the network share does have a "iTunes Library.itl" file. The iTunes library chooser keeps telling me it can't find an iTunes library.
    Thanks,
    Steven

  • Is it possible to share networks with another mac (MacBook)?

Is it possible to share networks with another mac (MacBook)?
I want to be able to create a document on my computer and save it on both my MacBook Pro and another MacBook. Also, I want to be able to open documents saved only on the MacBook on my MacBook Pro. Is that possible on the same wirelss?
    Thank you!

You would not want to use ad hoc networking if you also need to access the internet. I'm not even sure it is possible.
How are you accessing the internet from these Macs now? If you have a wifi (or wired) network that you both access in your work location, you should be able to use File Sharing across that network, so you shouldn't need the ad hoc network.
    Some general observations:
You'll need a plan for how to keep straight which Mac holds the most current version of a file. That should probably be to keep each file in only one place (your Mac, the other Mac, a local file server, a cloud server). Even in our home, with one person doing most of the file accessing, I find a central location works best for this; in my case, that's a desktop system that stays on all the time, but a disk attached to my AirPort Extreme base station, a Time Capsule, or a NAS would serve.
If you make use of the portability of the MacBook[Pro]s to work in different locations, you'll also need a plan that includes that working away from the main work location. If you often work with common files while away from your main work location, a cloud solution may be best even with just two of you. Depending on the size of your files, one of the free cloud solutions may suffice; most offer paid expansion as your needs grow.

  • TV Show download problem with library on a network share

My local drive has 100GB disk space available. I have my iTunes library configured to be on a network share which happens to be on a NAS (network attached storage) drive. My NAS drive has over 600GB disk space available. When I try to download a TV Show (Battlestar Galactica) I get an error which says that:
"The disk you are attempting to use is full"
This is nowhere near true. I tried several times, then switched my iTunes library to point to my local drive, and the download worked. Does iTunes have a problem with a library on a network share?
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Brad

Not easy because in order to open just one library file you would have to be running the same version of iTunes on all computers which would be limited to the lowest version supported by your computers (the G3).  Try to open a iTunes 10 library with 9.2.1 and it will refuse. This in turn might not support your equipment.  Even if you can do this you would have to make sure only one copy of iTunes was running because the library file cannot be opened by multiple copies of iTunes at the same time.
