Network slow

I just move, and in my new house I have troble with the Airport network. I have 9 mac (got 5 kids...) and have to share internet access and files. The problem is that some of the compurters are quite far from the main arirpot station. I configured the airport bases for extending the network, and the network is done by one airport express connected to the ASDL modem, two more airport express scattered around and one airport extreme at the very end of the net, with three computers connected via ethernet. Now are those three computers that are very, very slow. I try, of course,to do not use ethernet but the wirless net, but the connection is still too slow. Shold i just add more airport bases for increasing the strenght of the signal? Or do I have to do smething different? (all computers are regurarl upgraded and al of them use 10.5.4. Three are relatively old imac with the g protocol not the n (all are intel). Thanks.

Hi,
Anything updates now?
Firstly, since there would be multiple reason for this issue, I agree with the idea that you’d better capture packets to find the reason for this issue.
In addition, according to your simple description, I am not quite sure of your scenario. I would appreciate it if you can elaborate it.
By the way, if you have solved this issue by yourself, would you mind sharing your troubleshooting steps in the forum?
Best regards,
Susie

  • Network slowness in lion 10.7.2

I am having network slowness ever since upgrading to Lion 10.7.2. Nothing in my setup has changed. I used to get around 10 Mbps on my DSL router, now I get about 6 Mbps. I checked the router, the signal coming in to it is the same strength, 12 Mbps. Anyone have any ideas?

I use the word "Excessive" because when I boot from an external drive, where I have Snow Leapord installed, and open the same links, I don't have the list of ports and I never lose any with a "server not responding" error.  The log in VirusBarrier doesn't show the time of the connections or how long they remain open.  Not sure where I could get that information.
Not sure if a Netstat reading from the Network Utility helps with any info.
The clean install of the Mac OS 10.7.2 on a seperate partition yielded the same results.

  • Network slow after 10.4.5 update

Hi there, after installing the 10.4.5 update my PowerBook 12" is really slow when accessing network services. Web, Mail are impossibly slow.
I have a cable modem broadband connection with a Belkin wireless router sharing the connection. The laptop connects via Airport and uses DHCP for autoconfiguration.
I have tried the fix suggested on MacFixit of putting the DNS manually in the TCP/IP settings. Also I have turned off IPv6 which was also suggested to no avail.
My other laptops with earlier system revisions are running fine (I am using one to write this) and I have tried the Mac on another network with the same effect so it has to be something that 10.4.5 has done to my poor alubook
    Can anyone help please.
    PowerBook 12" 867Mhz 1.12GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Mac OS X 10.4.5 (#9): Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater; SIIG FireWire card not working; more
Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater Over the past few days we've outlined a number of fixes for network slowness that occurs after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5, including entry of a DNS address, toggling of IPv6 and more.
We've now received notes indicating that a tried and true workaround for various issues -- re-applying the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater (as noted in our general workarounds for 10.4.5) -- can have beneficial effects in this case as well.
    MacFixIt reader Fred Moore writes:
"After much thrashing about and wasted time, I appear to have solved both the slow web page loading as well as my email sending problems in one stroke. Guess how: download the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater and reapply it. This nonsense has cost me a lot of time but everything seems to work now. IPv6 is set back to Automatic, there is no entry in the Network prefs DNS server field, and my email sending works perfectly (so far; I've sent a bunch of tests). Why didn't I just download the combo updater and apply from my hard drive at the beginning? Well, Software Update should (yes, I know, I know...) work. I'll never again use Software Update for a system update."

  • Does a mixed N and G network make the network slower for the N-enabled?

    Hello all,
I was just admiring my Airport Extreme box after registering it, and I noticed this bit of fine print:
"Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network."
Does this mean that my 802.11g printer makes the network slower for my two 802.11n macbooks?

    Okay,
For a follow up: I'm using the "guest" network for all my G-level wireless devices, and the regular network from all my N devices.
Does that overcome the mixed network limitations? It seems like it wouldn't - because the Airport is basically creating two virtual networks out of one network. Or are there two individual networks on the Airport?
    Thanks!

  • Extending Airport Extreme Network Slows Network Dramatically

Hello, after I extended my airport network I experienced dramatically reduced network speeds. Here is my configuration:
ISP is cable modem with very decent speeds.
Base Station is Airport Extreme (802.11n capable) / with gigabit ethernet (in garage)
Secondary router is Time Capsule 802.11n WiFi hard drive (also gigabit ethernet capable (on my desk at other end of the house).
What works OK is connecting base station to secondary router using ethernet, base station with wireless enabled, but secondary router (Time Capsule) with wireless set to Off. I have the latest versions of Airport Utility and firmware installed everywhere.
"Ain't broke, don't fix it" you may say, BUT I did want to extend the range of the wireless network. So I followed the steps to extend an 802.11n wireless network:
    ( - Base Station: Create Network / Allow network to be extended;
    - Remote Station: Extend Network, selecting my network, allow wireless clients)
Everything seemed to complete successfully; two green lights glow in Airport Utility and one on each device. However, the network slowed to a crawl. It was so bad that I had to back out the changes and revert to my initial configuration. The extended range of my wireless network was just not worth the terrible performance penalty.
The network slowdown seems to be experienced by all clients, including another Mac which is connected via Ethernet to the Gigabit Base Station (not to the Time Capsule - directly to the base station). So this suggests that the extension to the wireless network slowed down the whole network. (Btw, it's not just internet connections that were affected. I tried connecting between the Macs using the Finder and it was painfully slow - taking roughly a minute to connect.) To me it seems that something must be very wrong, I just don't know what!
    So my questions:
    1. I had hoped that the gigabit connection between the routers (which seems to work fine when only the base station supports wireless clients) would continue to work when the Time Capsule is used to extend the wireless network. Is this true, or in this mode does it switch to operating as a wireless client itself? (If so, this might partly explain why my office Mac slows down so much; it would now be connecting to the cable modem via wireless, not gigabit.
    2. I'm guessing, (but I haven't tried it yet), that I might be able to achieve almost what I want to do by creating a different network using Time Capsule. Does anyone have any experience doing this? If so, what suggestions do you have?
    Thanks, Patrick

Patrick... I had the same problem althjough not quite as complex I believe... see this thread... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2111176&tstart=0
I changed my base to 'n' at 5ghz and saw a marked improvement. Hope this helps.

  • Airport Drives Me CRAZY! New 802.11n Network Slower Than Old 802.11g/b

I've been using Macs since 1988 and consider myself an advanced user. However, every time I setup a new Airport wireless network or re-configure an existing one, I feel like a helpless newbie trying to figure out how to open a folder on my desktop. No matter how many times I read the manual or the help files or these forums, I can never grasp what seems like it should be a simple path from A to B to C.
Anyway, here's my current situation: I've been successfully (I think) running a 6 year old AP Extreme Base Station [AE] (in my home office addition) and 2 Airport Expresses [AX] (one AX roughly 15 feet from the base station--through sheetrock, and the second AX roughly 30 feet from the first AX--through sheetrock and some wooden stairs. (so roughly 45 feet from AE to 2nd AX). It wasn't the speediest thing going but it did the trick with older Macs.
I recently bought a MacBook Pro which supports 802.11n. I most often use this laptop at the point in the house furthest away from the AE (Base Station) The AE (Base Station) is in my home office connected to my MacPro desktop (see #1 below). In addition, the family iMac is also in that room furthest from the AE. Using the new MacBook Pro with the old 802.11/g/b network turned out to be painfully slow. I was experiencing the same slow network connection my family has complained about for years with their older Macs and 802.11g/b.
I decided it was time to upgrade the whole network, if only to speed up my MacBook Pro connection. Bought new 802.11n Airport Extreme (MC340LL/A) and 2 new 802.11n Airport Expresses (MB321LL/A). Setup did not go smoothly. Again, my normally competent Mac persona was reduced to a babbling three-year-old. Had three different Apple techs on the phone trying to help me through it. Got different, contradictory instructions from the last two. Finally got all three units working, only to find that not only does my MacBook Pro seem even more sluggish than when connected to the old 802.11g/b network, but my wife tells me web pages are taking at least twice as long to load as with the old network.
As concisely as I can lay this out:
    *1. Airport Extreme (Base Station)*
Connected via Ethernet from its WAN port to my Comcast cable modem. One Ethernet (LAN) port on that AE is then connected via Ethernet to my Netgear 8-port Ethernet switch. Ethernet from switch to Ethernet port 1 on my MacPro. (MacPro does NOT have an Airport card because I forgot to order one. Also I confirmed that this setup was functional by connecting to the AE wirelessly with my MacBook Pro showing the name I'd given the new network prior to adding the two AX's to the mix).
Some Airport Extreme settings of note (all accessed via "Manual Setup" button):

    SETUP/GOALS:
With Airport Extreme (Base Station) as the starting point, have the two Airport Express units with the strongest, fastest signal possible, provide Internet access (and file sharing, iTunes speakers capability) to three Macs (one older iMac, one older PowerBook and my new MacBookPro). Again, I believe my new MacBook Pro is the only one with 802.11n support, so I don't expect the other Macs to take advantage of the speed boost offered by the three new 802.11n devices.
+Any and all help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!+

    {quote}With the AirPort Extreme, in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, click on the button for "Wireless Network Options", check the box for "5 GHz Network Name", and enter a different network name. (That can be trivially different, such as the name of the main network suffixed with an underscore and the digit 5.) Once configured that way, connect your "N" gear to each network in turn to see if one is any better than the other. (If you're wondering what effect this would have, it allows segregating your "N" gear from the older gear to prevent the older gear from slowing down your network. However, distance and interference from things like walls may negate any advantage.){quote}
William: I was gone most of yesterday, but had a chance to implement your recommendations today. I added the 5 GHz network as you suggested, but in order to connect to that at all with my 802.n11 MacBokk Pro, I need to be within a few feet of the AE (base station). If I try to access that network even from the next room (well within reach of both the AE and the livingroom AX, I get one bar and "failure to connect" messages just trying to logon to that network.
However, I did some experimenting that (as of right now, anyway) resulted in much faster network access, not only from my MacBook, but also from the older iMac which is the furthest Mac from the AE. According to my wife, that iMac is "loading web pages faster than I've ever seen them!"
    Here's what I did:
    1. Moved all three units to places where it seemed they would have the least amount of interference with the clearest path from unit to unit, also raising the height of both AXs from about 2-3 feet from the floor to about 5-6 feet from the floor.
    2. Changed one setting on the AE (base station): Wireless Tab > Wireless Network Options > Multicast Rate ---> Changed this from Low to High.
I have a feeling the location shifts made the real difference, but I will try changing the multicast rate back to "Low" just to see what happens.

  • Windows 7 Pro on iMac (mid 2011) and network slows down

We have an office with about 8 mid 2011 21" iMacs running Windows 7 Pro courtesy of Bootcamp.  The machines boot quickly and all programs open quickly.  They each have from 2 - 4 mapped network drives to a 2012 Windows Server 2008 R2 HP GL380 server on-site and are wired with Gig Ethernet HP business class switches).  The users' Documents, Desktop, and a couple other directories are re-directed to the file server using an Active Directory Group Policy Object (GPO).

  • Storage network slow backups

    Hi all
I dont know if anyone can help on here, We are having issues backing up to some LTO 4 drives on our SAN, the san switches are old brocades running at 2 Gig, the devices are backed up via a HP G5 server running netvault, the servers sit on the LAN and are mainly teamed to 2 GIG using the HP software. We had a consultant come in last week and say the speed is ridiculously slow, someservers are backing up at no more than 10Meg per second data rate, he said he normally see's around 100meg when backing up using LTO 4 drives,
he used a utility called fstfill which created a 1 gig file then wrote to disk, he said the disk performance on the old servers was terrible, some at 8Meg a second, could this be the reason??
Can anyone shed any light on why they would go slow slow??
    hope somone can help
    Cheers
    Carl

Are the servers backingup directly to the tape drives ?  Or are they sending their data over the network to a backup server which is the driving the tape drives ?
If the data is going to a backup server is it backingup to a pool of disk and then on to tape or trying to feed the tape drives directly from the network feeds ?
      -  If your are running straight from a network stream, how many streams at a time is your backup software configured to send to each drive ? (ie. are you backingup 1 server at a time, or doing 5 at a time ?)
      -  How congested is your network between your servers and the backup server ?
Also you mention "old servers" ... how fragmented are the filesystems on those servers ?  They could be spending a lot of time seeking the data.
Just some thoughts from the top of my head while I wait for someone to answer my question

  • Network Slow after update to 10.6.3

    Hi all
My Mac is one mac on a PC Network
after updating to 10.6.3 my Mac has slowed down in transfer speeds to and from server using Mac Finder speed are recording around the 300-400kb mark in using istat dashboard
Doing similar transfer with Windows Explorer with Parallels I get 4 - 7mb transfer in.
Anyone else had same issues, got any suggestions to fix

    Hi,
I have noticed the error occurs when I copy files from my Mac to any samba server (I run OpenSuSE on a Phenom-X4 and Ubuntu PPC on an old iBook-G3). However when I copy to a file share on a PC running Windows Server 2003 I do not get any file copy problems.
Reading and executing files from mounted samba shares or windows shares did not seem to have any issues.
For the moment I have relegated myself to copying files to a Windows OS running on a virtual machine in my Phenom-X4 and then logging into the VM and copying the files a second time to the samba share but I would appreciate anyone posting further on this issue. Because of my experiences I believe the issue is an incompatibility with the Samba servers after upgrading to 10.6.3.

I've tried different tcp_xmit_hiwat tcp_recv_hiwat tcp_max_buf tcp_cwnd_max settings but it does not appear to help.
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I'm talking about either basic ethernet or a wifi connection. Basic ethernet has the same speed in either direction ie 'downstream' or 'upstream'. I don't know the specifics of wifi but I'm pretty sure it too has identical speeds in either direction.
I only have an ssh server on my linux machine so I'm always running the copy from the mac. To summarize:
    $ scp file1 linux:/tmp -> 2.2Mb/s
    $ scp linux:/tmp/file1 . -> 100Kb/s
I know that apple wifi cards sometimes have problems with linksys routers, but even with a normal ethernet connection the speeds are the same.

  • Network slowness for PC's connected to phones

We are having a problem with users reporting slowness when they are connecting their PC's through their phones. The phones in use are 7912's 7940's and 7960's. The network layout is two 3560G PoE switches with the data and voice network separated by VLANS. They are CSSP build phones. Here is the 7940 load:
    App Load ID: P00307020400
    Boot Load ID: PC0303010200
    Version: 7.2(4.0)
The problem gradually builds to the point where the network access becomes unusable, but voice calls are just fine. Rebooting the phone fixes the problem for a short time.
    Any thoughts?

Upgraded to 8.0(7.0) and same issue. Here is the Device Info from the phone:

  • Network slowed down - Road Runner

I've had terribly slow Internet access for about a week and a half now. All my devices are getting 6-8 Mb/sec from Time Warner Road Runner, and I was consistently getting 15-20 MBs.
Time Warner was here today, and the Windows box they plugged directly into the modem was getting 15 Mb+. My souped up iMac, plugged directly in, was getting 6-8 Mb.
The same holds for all my other devices - all iOS. iPad, iPhone, AppleTV -- all experiencing slow Internet.
The Time Warner tech says they've been upgrading software on their modems recently - in the time range that I've been experiencing problems.
Anyone else seeing trouble with their Time Warner Road Runner Internet connection?

We used my cabling, which we swapped out with other cables, just to be doubly sure.
In short, the only obvious difference was that my system is entirely Apple and hers was Windows.
I'm somewhat confident that a change somewhere - either in the modem or upstream, or in the Apple ecosystem - has diminished my performance.
I know that all my network routers - the Time Capsule and two Airport Expresses - were updated. I did not think the desktop received any kind of an update that affected networking. (I have a third Express, first generation, that has not been updated recently).
As my performance was bad when connecting the desktop directly to the modem with two different ethernet cables (and those same cables were used to connect the tech's Windows laptop to the modem, with no performance problem), it seems something is going wrong on my desktop, iPad and iPhone, all of which report 6-8 Mb/s when the Windows machine was getting 15+ and that's what I consistently received before a week or two ago.

  • New network slowness

I've recently (last week) started having slowness in Safari so bad that it's basically useless. I have the Mac Mini with the builtin Airport Express. I've been sucessfully using it for months now. It's never been super fast, but acceptable.
I use a wireless network with WEP encryption. I have a DLink DI-524 router.
I believe that during this time (sorry I didn't make a note of the date) installed an Apple Update for OSX.
Just to test, I got a Windows laptop, set it up to use the same wireless network. I set it right beside the Mac Mini. On this Windows system, the web browsing is sub-second. No noticeable lag at all.
I saw an article on a forum that talked about turning off IPv6 (was set to Auto, now set to off). No difference. I tried using the Disk Utility and "repair permissions". I got a slight improvement there, but it's not consistent.
I tried installing Firefox, thinking that might make a difference. No improvement.
I have been using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I disconnected those and used a Mac keyboard from an older iMac. No difference.
I'm obviously grasping at straws here.
Interestingly enough, when I load a CD in iTunes, it successfully accesses CDDB and downloads the tracks info.
I watched the connection in the Network Utility and don't see any collisions or dropped packets.
I tried running a long cable to take the wireless out of the picture. Still no improvement.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Pat
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Just to update. I tried pinging my router as mentioned on another forum. BOTH my windows laptop and my mac mini displayed highly erratic response times, ranging from 10ms to 120ms. Why it was more apparent on the mini than the windoze machine, I don't know.
But my dsl modem also has a wireless router component. So, I connected to it, and my pings were in the .12ms to 5 ms range. On both machines. So, I'd say my problem is solved, had nothing at all to do with my Mac. It seems to be a problem with my wireless router on the DLink.
    Hope this helps someone else.
    Thanks,
    Pat

  • ITunes + Gigabit Network = Slow

iTunes runs extremely slow when it has content in it's library that is stored on a read-only network share. This has been happening since earlier versions of Windows and iTunes. Does any one know why or how to stop it?
I've got my music stored on a 500 gig network attached storage device and I access iTunes from a laptop. Both the laptop and the storage device use gigabit ethernet along with my router.
I ran a tool to monitor what iTunes is doing and it appears that every time I select a track iTunes is trying to open the file for modification. It tries to do this several times before giving up (why in the world is iTunes trying to modify the track?).

I am fairly sure you cannot be set to read only on the network drive. That seems to be your problem. iTunes has to be able to modify the files on access. Besides that, how does iTunes save new files if the drive is read only?
Slow is relative here. On my network with media files on network drive I get 40-50Mb when transferring files. This not to bad for 100Mb network. This 40Mb speed is only during library transfers. When connected to store, downloads top out at 3Mb, on 5Mb connection, when downloading the file. Watching my monitor it looks like iTunes downloads to cache on computer then transfer to library. The transfer to library happens at 40-50Mb.

  • Hyper-V Network Slow

A windows 2012 server standard with a pair of Broadcom NICs.
I've disabled Virtual Machine Queues and Large Send Offload on the adapter that's serving as the virtual switch but I'm still getting speeds that are 1/5th to 1/10th my normal network speeds.
The guest VMs are running Debian and CentOS Linux, and are managing enough speed to work with (500-700 Kbps) on random file transfers or remote connections, but are running much slower than the same tasks with any physical machine on the same network.
Any advice on other possible solutions would be great.
    Thanks.

So we have full information to help:
    1)  Which specific versions of CentOS and Debian are you running?  Per the documentation
here, are Hyper-V Linux Integration Services built-in, or separately installed if needed?
    2)  A just to confirm the obvious, you have your Hyper-V virtual machine configured with a "Network Adapter", and not a "Legacy Network Adapter"?
