Network speed problem... mac or ISP?

So I've started to experience this royally irritating issue in the past few days. Here's my setup:
A couple of machines and a few servers in a home studio here in New York.
2 servers in Pittsburgh
2 servers in San Francisco.
Typically, uploading and downloading from any of the 3 locations to the other 3 typically go at around 5mbit/s or faster...but as of recently, uploading from New York to ONLY San Francisco has dropped under 150kb/s, and randomly stalls.
Is there any possible way to test where the problem might be? I've been using mkfile to make 10MB files and using rsync to test the speeds. NY to Pit and back is great, Pit to San Fran and back is great, and San Fran to NY is great, but not vice versa... Also, this problem occurs when uploading from to NY to either server in San Fran... two different public IPs...
I've also had a friend try uploading to the San fran server who lives in San Fran himself (no problem) and a friend who lives in New York City (I live on Long Island), and he had no problem either...
Totally confused, and help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys,
Thanks for the responses!
I just gave a call to my cable company.. after I told them the overview, they think it's a router somewhere along the way from here to San Fran that's the problem, and obviously had the whole "its not really something we have control over but even if they dont fix it right away, companies tend to change their routing to work around it.".
So not really came of that, but a little relief at least that I'm not nuts I've also emailed my colo guys to see if they know of anything along the chain, since they usually are very up to date on what's going on with issues coming to and from them.
I'm gonna drive around my neighborhood today to see if anyone still has a un-WEP'd wireless to their cable, cause I'd love to see if its the same problem in my neighborhood too, just in case they're limiting my connection (cause I do do a LOT of uploading).

  • Network share problems Mac OS 10.4.x

I'm running Windows Server 2003 Standard edition which I'm using for around 500 users. We have 30 Mac's also connecting to this server, however the mac's seem unable to use files directly from the network, especially Quark files. Quark grey's out the Save button and only allows Save As.. when you click save as the file is renamed to lots of numbers.qxp, I don't have the same problem if the file is saved locally. I thought 10.4.7 would fix the problem but it doesn't (another bit of good testing by Apple). Anyone having the same problem?
Lets compare sizes   Windows XP Pro   Extremely annoyed Mac/PC admin
      Windows XP Pro

This problem only appeared after 10.4 was installed, so it's not really a quark problem. I have 1 10.3.9 Mac on the network and it does not have any of these problems.
This problem, I belive, was supposed to be fixed in 10.4.7 but it's made no difference, using SMB or AFP doesn't seem to resolve the issue either.
Permissions are locked down on the network here so I cannot give the Everyone group modify rights.

  • Mac connects to wifi, but internet doesn't work. Network diagnostics shows problem starts at ISP. All software is updated and all other devices are able to effectively use the wifi source.

    Hi, KK93.
Sometimes a simple power cycle of the router and Mac can resolve the issue.  However, try the steps in the article below to troubleshoot the Wi-Fi issue with your MacBook.

  • Fan speed problem Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC - please help

Please HELP, I have a fan speed problem with my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC
This is a NOT an Intel machine. I am running Mac OS X v10.5.8
    Power Mac G5 - PowerMac 7,2 - Power PC 970 (2.2) - 1.8 GHz with 2 CPUs - L2 Cache (per CPU) 512 KB - Memory 8 GB - Bus Speed 900 MHz - Boot ROM version 5.1.5b1
I have included below Links to download a sound file (.m4a) that I recorded of the fan speed problem and both a .pdf and .spx files of my system profile.

When did the fan problem start?
After I replaced the mother board on the computer.
Why did I replace the mother board?
Because the experts at apple agreed with my diagnosis that the major crash problems & kernel panics must have some thing to do with a logic board gone bad. They would not work on it, because this Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz machine is now a legacy model.
What I have done to attempt to fix my fan speed problem? yes I checked the obvious things, here is a list:
    1) yes I checked to be sure that the new mother board was the same part number as the original one, and that all things that were unplugged from the old mother board - were actually plugged into the new mother board.
    2) all the fans work, I can see them spinning if I use a flashlight and look at them (cover on and off to get at some of them)
    3) check all RAM to make sure: a) it was installed properly b) that the RAM worked using TechTool Pro c) even started the machine with only the original RAM that came with it.
    4) I installed a Temperature monitor - to see if there was something reading as very hot inside that was causing the machine to continually run the fans at a high speed. No, no heat issues that I can see. Here are the reading from the sensors in degrees fahrenheit, 2009-10-11 16:11:01 -0500
    CPU A Die Temperature: 75.7℉
    CPU B Die Temperature: 81.5℉
    Drive Bay: 68.9℉
Main Logic Board Air Inlet: 64.8℉
    Main Logic Board Ambient: 73.6℉
    Main Logic Board Backside: 76.3℉
    Memory Controller Heatsink: 93.2℉
    Processor Card A Ambient: 77.5℉
    Processor Card B Ambient: 77.0℉
    5) zapped the PRAM
    6) followed the SMU reset instructions for
    Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)
To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer, simply do the following:
    • Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    • Remove the power cord from the computer.
    • Wait two minutes.
    • Plug in the power cord.
    • Turn on the computer.
    7) followed the SMU reset instructions:
    Resetting the Cuda/PMU
    How to reset the PMU:
    • If the computer is on, turn it off.
    • Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power.
    • If possible, move the computer to a place where you are not standing on carpet.
    • Open the case and ground yourself by touching part of the metal frame inside the computer.
    • Find the Cuda or PMU button
    • Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
    • Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the cables you removed in step 2 and turn the computer on.
    • If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    8) ran disk utilities, repaired permissions
    9) found a setting in the system preferences that a chat room person suggested had something to do with fan speed. In Energy Saver, under options, processor performance was set to highest, I set it to automatic - this did not change anything that I could tell - BTW I checked my other G5 (a single processor that works fine) that is the setting that that it is set to, and it is nice and quiet.
    10) restarted the machine, ..
    11) found a Fan Control System Update - but it did not install when I tryed to install it -
    12) booted from OSX install disk and ran that disk utility
    13) used OnyX to fix disk permissions, clear caches and temp items
Nope - still have the same high speed fan problem. ... PLEASE HELP!!
I have been reading in the MacInTouch reader reports - found this: some one said to use this - thermal re-calibration using the Apple Authorized Service Providers' disk - but that's not available, at least I can not find it - anyone? have an answer to finding this - or can do it for me? I am in Chicago.

The Genius at the downtown apple store said that because it's a "legacy machine" they would not work on it, .. so should I push them?
Well, I personally think that's ridiculous, I'd Push them, I'd call AppleCare & talk up the chain if need be... there the ones that have or should have that Disc... man o man... Personally I'll never visit an Apple Store again in my lifetime, maybe try an independent AASP if none of that helps!..

Man-o-man, pop my cork before I explode on that one, if I had anything to do with it I'd close that store.

If my network connection goes out briefly due to a problem at my ISP, FireFox immediately opens a "diagnose network problems" page. This is particularly annoying when I don't even have FireFox or any other software open. Ideally, I do NOT want FireFox to even check if my Network is connected. How can I stop this?

  • Software update can't check for updates because of a network problem mac

hi i am facing below probelm on my mac ... i have done all the ip setting on my mac  Error is software update can't check for updates because of a network problem mac.Can any one please assit me...

    Can  Some solve my problem.....

  • I am desperate!! slow choppy network speeds (not actual inability to cnnct)

I have a 13" macbook air that has the following problem: I can connect to wifi networks (including at home WPA and also tried WPA2 settings) but even though I may get proper speed at first, I soon lose that and it becomes much slower and choppy (if I open activity monitor I can see the speed going up and down like crazy...). My internet speed at home is 12mpbs set by my provider. When I perform speed tests (vis speedtest.net or downloading files from other speed test sites) on my windows PC that is also on this network I get the full download speed. However with this MAC while I initially did get the full speed, it is now down to an average of 3-5mbps and the activity monitor, again, shows choppy behavior so it will be at 8 then at zero almost and then up and down again but never near the full speed. I tried to connect to other networks and I have the same problem - once this happens it stays. I tried removing the airport connection in network preferences and adding it again it does not help.
I TALKED TO APPLE AND HAD MY COMPUTER TESTED BY THEM - they didn't find any hardware issues (they said it was fine - but it isn't) but they still replaced the airport hardware in the computer - both the chip and the antenna (which meant replacing the entire screen). I brought the computer home, ran a speed test and everything was fine. I thought GREAT but then something happened and the problem returned. What I did (which I think was unrelated) was connect via SMB to a PC at home and I tried to stream a movie file. I noticed it kept 'pausing' so I opened up activity monitor again and to my HORROR I saw the choppy wave with network speed very inconsistent going up and down like crazy... I tried connecting to my slingox using the sling web access after disconnecting from my home PC but got partial speed and lots of drops too. I tried the speed test again multiple times, nothing seems to work.
SO I don't know what to do at this point. I have 10.6.6 running. I heard something about a firmware update but I am new to mac so not sure how to even do that or what else I can do to solve this problem or what is causing it. BTW - logging in now from the guest account still does not fix the issues and they remain the same.
I am desperately looking for help!!
    Thanks a lot!

Have you been able to reproduce your problems on other wireless networks other than at your house? It appears you are saying that this occurs on all wireless, but I'm not sure from your comment. If it's only at home, it would appear to be a compatibility issue between your wireless access point and the Macbook Air, which isn't uncommon. Sometimes a firmware upgrade to the access point can fix it, sometimes it might require switching to a different brand of access point. It would be great if you could borrow (or buy and return) a different access point/router to test. An Apple airport would be the best to use of course. Not the easiest solution, but lets you help rule out a hardware issue with your air.
My isp provides 15mbps but my wireless devices such as my iphone, ipad, laptop usually only get 6.5-8 mbps when testing speeds to the internet. I don't expect it to be as good as the wired due to interference, signal, etc. I don't get the choppy behavior however. Firware updates from Apple will appear in the same manner as standard software updates. If there is one available for your system it should appear when you check for software updates. That being said, I believe you can also manually download them from the Apple site.

  • WRT54gc speed problem

hy. i've got more of a question than a problem to be honest. and i must also say i understand the technical terms in networking but i ain't that good and i'm sorry if i can't really make myself clear.
until about 5 days ago my Internet Connection was made through a modem which was connected to the router thus having internet to 4 computers (2 LAN, 2 Wireless). during this time, my router was configured with Automatic DHCP (or something like that) and a MAC clone of my PC.during this time and after about 4 years of fidelity , my internet connection was of about 6MB => ~700kbs download.
now, my ISP provider "upgraded" my  connection and have direct cable connection. anyway, i now have a user name & a password. i switched the connection type to PPoE but i did not change anything else. the other settings are the same: MAC clone, open ports,Wireless MAC filters.
    So here is my problem:
-if my PC is directly connected to the internet, i can achieve an efective download speed of 10 MBs (100 Mb connection or something like that) and upload speed of 1,6 MBs (12 Mb connection)
-if i connect through the router i can only achieve about 3 MBs download speed (only 2,5MB the other PC LAN connected -> weird i'd say).
As far as i know, the router should allow speeds of 10 MBs for 1 PC if the other computers aren't connected or don't need internet at a given time.
So i was wondering if this speed problem could be related to the fact that i still have the other settings (mostly the MAC clone of my PC; this is the only one i can think of that might create a problem) or it might just be hardware related (doesn't allow me better speeds or something).

well, since yesterday, i've reseted the router and only added the user name & password provided by my ISP but still it doesn't work as it should.
about my connection, as far as i can say, my contract with my ISP has been modified from the cable contract to a fiberlink contract, most likely the cheapest (they have 2 kinds of contracts). but even with this cheap-fiber contract, i still should have a total 10MBs download speed! yet, my exact connection is of about 3MBs DL speed total. i know this because i used for download 2 PCs and have 3MBs DL and 1,5MBs UP.
anyway, if it help here is how i think my contract looks like:
Maximum bandwidth in your town -> 50 Mb / s
    Maximum Internet bandwidth        -> 50 Mb / s
Traffic with maximum bandwidth on internet -> unlimited
is it possible that the router only uses the Internet bandwidth ??? if so, is it possible to configure it so it uses the other one too?
or is it just hardware limitations ?

  • How to test network speed

How do I test the speed of my network to determine if Time Capsule or my Internet provider is behind a real slowdown in my internet access. I ran the java test at DSLReports.com and got the following results:
Compared to the average of 971 tests from comcast.net: download is 98% worse, upload is 98% worse.
I'm unsure where to look or what to look for in trying to find a cause for the problem but wanted to at least try and make a stab at finding out before I called Comcast.

You could try connecting a computer directly to your broadband modem and run the test again.  That would remove the Time Capsule from the configuration.  You may need to reset the modem to convince it to connect to a "new" device.
Are you connecting to the Time Capsule via Ethernet or Wi-Fi?  If by Wi-Fi, the quality of your Wi-Fi connection could have a big affect on the network speed.  In that case, use the advice in the second message of this thread to investigate the signal and noise levels that your Mac sees:

  • Slow LAN Networking Speeds after Resuming from Sleep

I use my mac mini as a HTPC running Plex. I have it connected to my Windows media server with 802.11n. Works fine but sometimes after resuming from sleep the network speed drops off to an unacceptable level (from 72 Mb/sec to 5 Mb/sec). Disconnecting and reconnecting doesn't help. Switching to G doesn't help. Only restarting the mini restores the connection to full speed.
None of my Windows clients on the same network have any troubles.
    Thoughts?

Looks like Plex might be causing the problem. I always have plex running and it appears as though if Plex makes a request for a file on the share before OS X is done re-mounting it after sleep, it kills the whole process.
Shouldn't the OS be robust enough to handle a situation like this?

  • Very slow network speed

Since I changed from Mac OS 9.2.2 to Mac OS X 10.3.9 on my dual 450 Power Mac i am having always the same problem. after some new starts my network speed becommes very slow. internet, printer connection and also when using personal file sharing. Folder of 22MB takes about 1 hour insted of 3 seconds to send from one mac to the other. I was trying on both HD´s and with only security update from CD before using Internet. I also have to repair volume permissions.tried reset of PRAM. tried it with both HD´s separately installed, sometimes it helped for short time. but unfortunately I always get the problem also when I am not using intenet connection after installing 10.3.9 on a completely empty HD (also tried to formate mith zeros). On my other mac´s: G3 (400MHz), G4 (500MHz) PowerBook and Power Mac G4 450(single)
the system is working without any problem. same settings! Only the Power Mac G4 dual 450 I am having this problem. Software like Photoshop, X-Press and also Maxxon 4D are running fast and without problems. Please help me!!!

  • Connecting to home based wireless network?  I-Mac Newbie.

Historically I used Windows-based PC and last year upgraded all of my equipment. This includes a Dell XPS PC running Windows XP, an Inspiron Notebook running Vista an HP wireless printer all interconnected via a Netgear router. The Windows-based computers and printer are all communicating happily via my home network. I just picked up an I-Mac to do some heavy desktop publishing and graphics. The I-Mac was able to connect to the router with no problem and the speeds are fantastic. If that was it, I'd be happy. However, when I try to link to the home network, the I-Mac doesn't show any other computers or printers online. The Windows computers show that the I-Mac is connected to the network, but not vice-versa. I installed Network Magic for Mac (which I used for Windows as well) to no avail. Do I need to install drivers or something on the Windows computers to share files? I tried Apple tech support but they stopped me and stated they can only provide assistance if I used the Airport Extreme Base Port (ummm...no thanks). Being totally new to the Mac world, I'm completely clueless. Step by step instructions would be most appreciated, but any thoughts or input is welcome.

The printer is the HP C6100. It has integrated
    wireless WLAN 802.11g.
    That is really cool.
Unfortunately, all of the settings you suggested
appear to be selected but I'm not closer to solving
    my network issues.
Seems I just skimmed over your description. It's the Mac which
can't mount the PC's not vice versa. You should be able to use
the Finder command-K dialog to connect using
    smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/sharename
That is, the ip address directly.
When you say configure smb/cfis...am I supposed to
fill in the WINS Server field? I used Network Magic
to set up the Windows Computer... I've never
designated a server/client relationship on my home
network. I this required for the Mac?
To get to the NetBios or Lanmanager name info I believe you
need a WINS server. OTOH, there is Bonjour for Windows, and
that might just make the discovery process simpler. I don't
know how you'll get to the printer with Bonjour, though. It
might support appletalk, though, and as long as your router
doesn't mind tunneling appletalk, it could just work.

  • Network speed while a backup is happening with a TC?

1.) Using a N network with speeds supposedly up to 20mbps, what happens to the overall network speed when a first gen TC is backing up a Mac? Will it affect streaming Netflix? Playing Xbox Live? etc.?
2.) Where should I have the Cat6 cables connected to make sure it backs up as quickly as possible? Just from the Modem to the TC? I am also going to use an Extreme for a roaming network, so would I also need to have cat6 from the wall to the Extreme to make sure it is as fast as can be? Anywhere else?
    Thanks!

1.) Using a N network with speeds supposedly up to 20mbps, what happens to the overall network speed when a first gen TC is backing up a Mac? Will it affect streaming Netflix? Playing Xbox Live? etc.?
Since backups and streaming must share the same overall bandwidth, there will be some loss of bandwidth to accomodate both happening simultaneously. Streaming from Netflix will NOT be affected from the ISP to the router, but may potentially be affected between the router and the Netflix host device. Same would hold true for the Xbox.
2.) Where should I have the Cat6 cables connected to make sure it backs up as quickly as possible? Just from the Modem to the TC?
First, you will only get Gigabit speeds if, as a minimum, the following are true: 1) All four pairs of wire within the cable are dedicated for data, 2) All ports have Gigabit interfaces, & 3) Ideally, all ports support Jumbo Frames.
Second, CAT-6 cabling is not required for Gigabit. CAT-5e is totally capable of handling the frequency rate for Gigabit. In fact, CAT-6 was designed to support up to 10 Gigabit networking. If; however, you can obtain CAT-6 at or near the same price point as CAT-5e, then there is nothing wrong with using CAT-6.
With that said, the 1st Gen TC does have Gigabit interfaces, but does support Jumbo Frames, so getting near Gigabit bandwidth will not be possible.
To provide the best bandwidth for backups, you will want a Gigabit Ethernet connection between the device being backed up to the TC.
I am also going to use an Extreme for a roaming network, so would I also need to have cat6 from the wall to the Extreme to make sure it is as fast as can be? Anywhere else?
You will want CAT-6 on the cable run in the wall between routers as well. You will also not want to share any of the four pairs of wires in these cables for other purposes, like phone service. It is common practice in newer house that come pre-wired to use Ethernet runs that terminate at a wall plate that provides both an Ethernet and phone jack. Typically, they will use the same cable and connect two of the pairs for Ethernet (the minimum required for 100 Mbps Ethernet) and connect one pair for phone service. Again, Gigabit Ethernet requires all four pairs to be dedicated to data.

  • Network Speed Question

I want to increase my network speed so that hopefully when I try to see a Youtube video on my ipad it wont stop, start, stop, I think that's called buffering. My ISP tells me currently I pay for 1.5 mbps and to increase it to 6 mbps would add $12/month to my bill. So is 6 mbps enough to stop the buffering problem?

So is 6 mbps enough to stop the buffering problem?
Unfortunately, no one can tell you how a wireless signal will perform in your home unless we visit your home.
Your chances of smooth operation improve significantly by going to a 6 Mbps speed, but there are always a number of variables with a wireless signal.....distance, obstructions, inteference from other sources, etc that affect the experience.
Personally, I find that I need at least a 10-12 Mbps connection for solid, reliable performance from the Internet.
The bottom line is that you will not know if 6 Mbps will provide the improvement that you seek until you try it out in your home. For that reason, you might want to make sure that you understand the terms of the agreement before you commit.
For example, there might a "trial period" to allow you try things out before you move permanently to the higher speed plan.

  • How do i check network speed?

I have just installed a DLink Gigabit router on my network, all the PC are negotiated to 1.0GB connection no problem, but how do i check to see if my macpro has? The network settings are left at automatic, but how do i know what speed the mac has automated too?
    Cheers

Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info... -> Network and then select the interface you want to check in the upper pane. The lower pane shows all the info about the interface and at the bottom it shows the MAC address, duplex mode and speed.
