Network Stalling

We're looking at the usual "why is my internet so slow?" problem here. Speed tests show good (+7000kbps down/+800kbps up) and other computers on the LAN don't have any problems. My specifics seem to be an initial stall while connecting to a website. The status bar in Firefox seems to dwell on "contacting www.xyz.com" and then bam! once the page starts to load it goes rather quickly. I'm also seeing the same behavior connecting to my mail server (on the LAN). Any suggestions are appreciated. 10.4.11 on a DP 1.8 G5.

Thanks BDAqua, that helped with the internet. In looking at my server, somehow the DNS got screwed up internally, now off to troubleshoot that.

  • Kill the Network Stalling popup!!!

Does anyone know how to stop iTunes from throwing up the "Network Stalled" popup? It’s absolutely, completely, and infinitely infuriating. I simply don't care if the network is having an issue. I especially don't want a popup coming up randomly while I’m trying to do other more important things….like work. I loose window focus on what I’m working on and either have to wait for the window to close or grab my mouse to click back on what I was doing. All the while I’ve lost my place and wasted time on something I can’t change or fix. And, to add insult to injury, when the window comes up, the specific focus is on the “Stop” button. Therefore, if I’m typing and the window pops up before I can stop, my key presses cause the “Stop” button to be clicked and iTunes stops playing. It would be fine if the message displayed in any of the iTunes status message areas within the application. But, it’s completely pointless and counterproductive for anyone to endure the current behavior.

As an addendum to this post, hopefully Tech staff gets messages from this forum: ANYTIME iTunes has a dialog box it Steals the Window Focus. This should only happen when a severe error will affect the entire computer. I have had multiple dialog boxes dismissed without being read becuase I was typing along and iTunes stole the window focus and the space bar dismissed a box before I knew what happened. I then had to use the mouse to go back to the application where I was actually getting some work done. Please fix this in the next release!

  • Network Stalls When Downloading A File

    Hi everyone.
I have been experiencing this trouble:
Whenever I start downloading a file, the whole network stalls, I cannot browse websites, or download other files until the last one finishes.
I have a dual band network, with both G and N devices.
Hope someone could clarify this for me.

I have this same problem. Any download of any type from anywhere grinds everything else to a halt. Meaning I can't browse the internet or basically do anything else when a download is in progress.
My PC is on the same network connection with no problem. So I do not think it is my router. I think it is because the Mac Mini is leaving no overheads to do anything else and just maxes itself out using up everything available.
    Can anyone help me out?

  • Network stalling in itunes

Each time I have tried to listen to a song in the music store I get a notice that the network stalled and the song selected keeps rebuffing. This started 3 days ago after downloading itunes 4.9

This is an update to my post on Sept. 1. Since then i downloaded and installed the itunes 5.0.1 maintenance update. Unfortunately my problem persists: itunes still stalls and starts rebuffering whenever I try and play an internet stream; this normally starts about 20 secs into the stream. plus the rebuffering attempt is almost never successful. the only way I can listen to these mp3 live streams is by using another Mac Tiger compatible mp3 player. One change from my previous post is that my other media players are now working ok - itunes is the only problem. I cannot be the only person having this problem Help!!

  • Network Stalled in iTunes Radio

Okay... since the latest iTunes update, I'm having horrendous experiences with iTunes radio. No matter what station I select, the feed is interrupted every few seconds with "Network Stalled"... "Rebuffering Stream."
I have plenty of RAM and bandwidth. All other software is current. And I regularly run "Repair Disk Permissions." I have also recently cleaned up the hard drive using Disk Warrior. Firmware on my Airport is also updated and current. I have even quit using iChat and iDisk, but the problem has not gone away.
I seem to recall someone posting solutions to these issues a year or so ago, but any helpful suggestions here would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Hi -
I had the same problem. This may sound weird but I shut down our computer and disconnected the DSL line. I reconnected the line a minute later and restarted the computer. I'm not getting the "Network stalled" messages anymore.
Hope that works for you as well.

  • MBP Stalls home network

My home network is pretty small. It consists of A wireless router that is hard wired to PC (Desktop) and I use the wireless internet for my mbp. Whenever I am gone and I have my mbp with me the home network works flawlessly (or so I'm told). I could be gone for days and it will never stall. However, whenever I connect my mbp to the network the internet works fine for a while then all of a sudden web pages will stop loading. Not only on my computer but also on the other desktop computer. Basically the whole network stalls. What's strange is even though web pages will no longer load, AIM and bittorrent still work. The only way to remedy the problem is to restart my router (Which is a Belkin if that helps) and I usually have to do that about 4 or five times a day. Any suggestions?

Try changing the channel. Most router are set up at channel 6 or 11. Try channel 9 and see if that helps. What happens if you are connected directly to the router?

  • ANNOYING iTunes Stall Network Popup

I am SICK & TIRED of complaining for the last several versions of iTunes about this Bug in both Windows XP Media Center and now in Vista Ultimate.
Every time I play the iTunes radio, and the network stalls, iTunes pops up and tells me about it. When this happens, my curser is no longer in the program I am working in (Word, IE, or other) and I have to use my mouse to get my curser back into the program I was working on when I was interrupted by iTunes. At times, I spend more time attending to iTunes than working. WHEN WILL THEY FIX THIS?....IT IS ANNOYING!!!!!!

The problem is not that the network stalls. The problem is, that when it does stall, iTunes and the stalled network message pop up and interupt what I am doing. My curser is no longer in the program I was working on. I have to use the mouse to get back to my program. Sometimes I spend more time with the message, than with my work.

  • Network activity stalls

I've searched to try to find these symptoms mentioned anywhere else online, but to no avail, so I decided to post here. I have a Powerbook 12" G4, 1.33GHz, 1.25MB, that will stall all network activity from time to time, and it's getting increasingly worse. I've eliminated everything I can think of to isolate the problem. It's plugged directly into a High Speed modem now through an ethernet cable, firewall on, bypassing the wireless router. The problem persists. I think I can safely say the problem is in the Powerbook. Whether it's a hardware or software problem, I just don't know. Oh yeah, I've tried using it on two networks, two different ISPs, using two different modems, and the problem persists.
Before, when I was surfing wirelessly through the Airport card, I found that turning Airport on and off (menubar) would often work, but not always. Now that I'm hardwired, I'm leaving the Network Preference pane open in order to hit "Renew DHCP Lease" whenever it stalls, and that works most times, but not always. It will "usually" fix itself if I wait long enough. (BTW, I've hit that button 3 times in the last few minutes while surfing discussions.apple.com. It's like the Powerbook has temporarily forgotten where the net is - amnesia)
    Observations:
    * Sometimes, not always, the CPU useage pegs at 100% while it's stalled. (What's it doing?)
    * Non-apple software, that might be contributing to the problem, are the aggregators I've started using. Apple's own ITunes is the one I use for podcasts. Democracy Player (video) and Vienna (newsfeeds) are the other two. They send out multiple requests simultaneously during a refresh. I've witnessed downloads, in progress at the time using another program, completely stop when I do a refresh with any of those aggregators. I've seen the network stall many times, using ITunes too, and the feeds time out instead of refreshing.
    * I'm using Firefox for the web. As mentioned, it will stall while surfing regularly. Some files downloaded with Firefox have stalled, and they do NOT resume the download afterwards. I've had to start them over again.
    * BitTorrent usually works fine all the way through a download, as long as I leave it alone. However, I've watched aggregator refreshes kill torrent downloads that were in progress, cutting connections to all peers. I don't think BT is causing the problem, but it is being affected.
I reinstalled the system a few days ago (archive and install) and then updated to 10.4.8 through software update. It stalled two times while downloading those updates too, while the computer was NOT attended. Sigh. The half-finished downloads did NOT resume, they had to started over from scratch.
I don't know what else I can add to this.
Hitting "Renew DHCP Lease" while it's stalled, will often "unstall it" and then it finishes what it started. But not always.
I want to reiterate that the stalls are not entirely consistent, that sometimes everything works fine. It's just that the problems seem to be related to these actions, like there's something that's not quite up to the task, not every time. That's how it seems to me. It's frustrating.
Suggestions, comments, and confirmation from others with similar issues, would be welcome. Can anyone suggest or point me to a fix?
    thanks

    Update:
    2) I pulled the Airport card and cleaned the contacts
with a pencil eraser and reinstalled. Then I noticed
the power plug has a flange on the centre pin that
compresses. I took a butter knife and spread the
flange contacts apart, just a bit, and then plugged
it in. (The thinking being that the centre pin
contact was too loose, and therefore, possibly,
unable to power the card under full load
    conditions.)
    Update 2:
Well, I'm 99% sure the procedure above solved my network dropout problems while using Airport (wireless). I mistakenly called this plug the power plug, when apparently it's the antenna plug. Whoops!! It worked out to the same difference though. Poor contact from the centre pin was reducing the card's effectiveness. It's rock solid now.
My other network problems turn out to be related to the new ISP. I think their modem is flaky. It's a 30 day trial, so I'm returning it and getting a replacement. I've been surfing problem-free with the old ISP, now that Airport is fixed, but the new ISP (modem) is still giving me many network problems, that completely disappear when I switch back.
For anyone interested, I'm testing Rogers Portable Internet (available in Canada). It's an early version of WiMax and it looks promising. I recently read where some hotels are charging outrageous small fortunes for conference room net access. This simple device could literally kill that as a profit centre. Just plug the modem into any electrical outlet and you're online. It's 1.5 Meg down, 256K up, and at about the same price as regular High Speed dsl or cable. That's not too shabby. (...if it works as it should.)

  • BIZARRE - Wireless Network Dies Every Day at 4:30pm (???)

This is an incredibly bizarre problem. I've been having problems with my wireless network for about a month or so. What will happen is that when using my Intel iMac, the network signal will increase, decrease etc in the status bar for about a half hour, then eventually the whole network becomes unavailable. The Airport Express light is solid green, but neither my iMac nor my iBook can detect it. I usually work on it in the morning hours with no problem, but almost always this happens around 4:30 pm in the afternoon when I do my afternoon work at home. When it crashes and i type in the name of my network, it just says "error joining the network." The only fix is to unplug the Express and reset it. Doing this every day is getting incredibly annoying. Most times, but not always, I put the iMac to sleep during the day and wake it up between 3:30 and 4:00.
The network will do this other times as well, but almost like clockwork its drops around that time just about every day now. The only thing I ever got that resembled an error message is that once, while using Airtunes, it told me the network stalled.
At first I thought this was the Airport Express hardware. So when it crashed I took it to the Genius Bar and Apple replaced it for me. However,m the new unit exhibited the same problem right away. So it can't be the Express.
Then I thought it was something to do with 10.4.8 because thats when this all started, approximately. So I reverted back to 10.4.7 on both computers...still the same result.
I am stumped and have no clue what is causing this. I've tried changing many of the wireless options in the AP Admin utility but nothing seems to work. I dont know much about manually configuring this stuff (and I dont know much about using terminal commands etc.) so maybe there is something obvious to you 'smarter' people that I simply dont notice.
So it either has to be something to do with a problem being caused from my iMac or my modem. I have no issues using the iBook g4 I use a Motorola Surfboard (SB-5120, on lease from the cable company) which is run directly via ethernet cable to Airport Express. Another coinidence is that I noticed this also happened around the time when Time Warner Cable took over for Adelphia in our area. For the first six months I owned the AX, I never had one problem or had to do any resets.
If anyone has any info on this...PLEASE...any help would be appreciated.

Might have to do with your sleep preferences or third party software programmed at this particular time. Jon

  • AirPort Express Network Running Slow

I am running an AirPort Express network in my dorm room with my MacBook Pro. Things were going well, but as of late, it seems like it is slllloooowwwwing down. I cant even get through a 30 second iTunes clip without the "Network Stall"ing at least twice. Webpages take a while to load and that new iPod tutorial video, yea, had to go to class and come back before the SMALL one was ready to play straight through.
I have reset the airport express, renewed the DHCP lease... I think I have to clear out something like the DNS or whatever... any ideas!?

More than likely you are experiencing RF interference. Try changing the channel used by the AirPort Express (AX) until you find a channel which works better or you run out of channels.

  • ITunes Radio keeps stalling.

Latest iTunes and Mavericks, any help?

I think what the original poster is saying is that iTunes does not rebuffer the stream once it gets the "Network Stalled" error. It simply does nothing. What it should do is try to detect if the network is available again and if so, it should start to rebuffer the stream.
I started getting this problem tonight. My DSL ISP was experiencing intermittent drop outs, so my internet connection would drop out for about ten seconds every hour or two. This caused major problems with iTunes Radio. I had to click on STOP in the Network Stalled - Rebuffering window each time it popped up, and then I had to press Play to begin downloading the streaming radio. I should not have to take such action... this should be automatic. I think it is a bunch of frustrating crap that the user should not have to put up with.
Oh well, Its April 2007 now... I guess I won't see a fix until at least October 2007 since everyone is too busy trying to get the iPhone out the door.

  • Radio stalling after update

Since I installed the latest update (7.2), I have had a problem with listening to the radio. The network stalls and rebuffers often. It didn't do this before the update. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks

    Try the standared fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults.

  • Airport loses connection to Internet under heavy load

Often, all the computers in my house will lose their Internet connection. However the network stays up just fine. There are both wired and wireless computers. A Netgear 16-port switch handles all the wired machines. The only solution is to pull the power cord from the AEBS and plug it back in. 30 seconds later, everyone's Internet is back up. The AEBS gets its Internet connection via PPoE to our DSL line.
From recent experimentation, I've discovered that this happens a LOT more frequently (at worst, every few minutes) when there is a lot of Internet traffic - many short connections, like when I run web scraping bots. If we go on vacation for 2 weeks, the connection stays up fine.
I know this problem has been discussed before but I've never seen a solution. All Macs and AEBS are on the latest software. Any suggestions?
    - Desperate for AEBS love

I'm experiencing problems with airport connections recently, too. I did a lot of analysing since then.
My configuration is based on a linux-driven NAS connected to two wireless acesspoints (1x SMC Barricade 2804WBR, 1x Fritzfon with recent firmwareupgrades). Two PowerBooks are connected with cable, two use their inbuild aiport cards.
Volumes are mounted from teh NAS via NFS.
Everything worked flawlessly for serveral month until, I assume, to the 10.4.8/10.3.9 update. I'm afraid the net isn't this much loaded that the connection losses were showing up immediately.
But then there was the need to rebuild the iTunes biliothek on the MacBook Pro which uses WLAN (connected to the SMC). For some time the connection worked but then the connection to the server (NAS using NFS) was lost. I tried it with cable an without (10.3.9 and 10.4.8). The same problem occured.
I tried to transfer different kind of files and folders an identified some files which seemed to cause the server losses. Always at the exact same point. But I had to learn that theses points differ whether I connect via the SMC or the Fritzfon. I have to say that the connection via the Fritzfon are somewhat more stable.
Fact is, that if the problem occures the whole network stalls, not only the connection between WLAN accesspoint and the client computer but the connection between cable-connected ones, too.
It's even possible that the server or the SMC becomes unresponsible via telnet so I have to restart it by pressing the reset-button.
I think I'll roll the MacBook Pro back to 10.4.7 and do some extensive testing with only this one active in the net.

  • Itunes no longer opens, help!

hi, i've had my ipod for about 2 months. when i first installed itunes, i had the problem where the terms of use would flash across the screen and never finish installing. i downloaded ewido (with suggestions from this forum) and managed to get my itunes up and running. everything was working fine, until a few weeks ago, when itunes all the sudden stopped opening altogether. now when i double-click on it to open, the hourglass appears and then disappears without opening itunes.
ive tried reinstalling itunes multiple times and ive also used ewido again (just in case there was something else on my computer stopping itunes from working) but ive had no luck. this problem is really frustrating, since now i can no longer download any music to my ipod, let alone even listen to any of it on my computer. any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated! thank you!
      Windows XP

I've long had a problem with iTunes taking ages to open and within the last week, not only has it taken several minutes to access the online store, but I cannot download tunes (the download times-out) and even when I try a sample play I keep getting "Network Stalled - rebuffering stream" error message every couple of seconds. I am able to download without problems from other websites. I've thought about re-installing iTunes but I'm scared of losing the tracks I've paid for.
