Network stops before network shares are unmounted (fstab)

Hi,
I use fstab to set up my network shares. In my rc.conf I have "network" then "netfs". When shutting down, the network is stopped before the shares are unmounted so the system never shuts down; it just hangs trying to unmount them.
Is there another/better way to specify network shares or a fix for this issue?
Thanks

Hi,
I think my solution is better for mobile computers that are not always connecting to the same network: using networkmanager you can make a 'dispatcher'-script that only loads after connecting to a specified network. There are examples on the wiki.
This way, my laptop is not trying to connect to my home NFS-shares when I connect to my parents' network, which could be a security risk.

  • Network shares get unmounted after wake up

    Hi all,
I have all my music in a network shared drive (AFP share), and in Lion, once mounted from Finder, it would stay like that even if the iMac went to sleep.
With Mountain Lion, it seems that when the Mac goes to sleep, all mounted shares get unmounted when the system wakes up, which is very unconvenient with Apple TV.
Is there any way to return to the old behaviour? Is this a bug? Or a new feature?
    Thanks
    Christian

Strange thing is that the network share is not actually unmounted. Listing the volumes in terminal (ls /Volumes) shows my 'Media' SMB share (displayed as 'Media-1', don't know why, and that is probably a part of the problem) and I can browse it or whatever. iTunes also works fine. The share simply disappears from the desktop after a longer period of time.
Once I reconnect to my share through the Finder, ls /Volumes shows both the 'Media' and the 'Media-1' share, which is actually one and the  same SMB share listed under two different entries.
Also, when the share disappears from the desktop, all the paths of the files in iTunes change to  'Media-1', but upon reconnecting the share and relaunching iTunes, everything gets back to normal and the paths lead correctly to the 'Media' share.
    Weird.

  • Lion thinks files on network share are open when they aren't

I have a machine running Lion and when the user goes to open a file on a network share they recive "the file is in use" error, a few seconds later a dialog box pops up saying that the file is available and the user is able to open the file.
I've checked and the file is not open any where else. I'm thinking that this has somthing to do with the new reopen file feature in Lion but I haven't been able to find proof to that fact.
I'm running an xServer with 10.6.7 and a 10.7 client.

    Hey,
Do you have a bluetooth headset paired with the iPhone? If you do, try turning the headset off as suggested here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1630
If the issue is not caused by a bluetooth headset, the iPhone may need service. You can get the iPhone serviced by making a reservation with a Genius online here: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ or calling U.S. iPhone technical support at: 1-800-MY-IPHONE (1-800-694-7466)

  • Network shares are offline

Something strange just happened with a server 2008 R2
I am able to ping other devices on the network either by ip addres or by dns name.  works fine.
But, when I use windows explorer or try to reach shares using \\servername or \\ip address I get name not found on network.
Also, when I try browsing the network nothing shows up.

    hi Chris,
Please check the below links which may help you fixing the issue.

  • Running applications and mounting network shares are system boot...

I have found plenty of User boot tricks for OSX. I am looking for the correct and best way to do 2 things.
    1. I want to run Aptana (a OSX application) which is the bootstrap for the service. Right now I have to manually start the service after rebooting. Where would one start.
    2. I want my server to mount a smb share on startup, I do NOT need boot time access.
Any help and/or links would be awesome. Google is failing me.

An applescript application set as a user login item should be a better choice.
I'm just about to work this out for an SMB mount of a users Windows home (augmented AFP homes are breaking preventing the 'Mount UNC path' option in the AD plugin).
Post back if you still want info.

  • Syncing Stops before all songs are added

When I sync my iPod using iTunes 8.0, for some reason the syncing process stops and ejects my iPod before my entire library is added. Can someone help me with this? I have to sync it about 10 times before 90% of my songs are added but even then I don't get them all.
    Thank you.

With what you have already done, it seems most likely to be a iTunes issue. You might want to go through a reinstall of iTunes. Here are directions to do that:

You can select to reinstall iTunes on the page above and you can get full instructions.

  • Windows network shares disappearing when users are logged on to Mac

We are having some problems with windows network shares disappearing when users are logged on to Mac computers.
We have a number of Mac labs that users can logon to using their AD login credentials. Their network shares are saved on a windows file server. The ad plug has been configured on each client Mac as has the LDAP plug-in. It is configured to connect to the Xserve which is running as an OD master. The system preferences for the client Macs are being managed from the Xserve.
The problem for the users is that they can log into the Mac no problem and they can see their network share appearing on the desktop and in the dock, but for some reason on random Macs and with random users the network share disappears. If they log off and log back in again the network share is still missing. As it happens randomly I can not put my finger on what the problem is.
Most labs either have Intel iMacs running 10.4.11 or Intel iMacs running 10.5.5
    Any help will be appreciated

    Mike,
We need to know some basic scoping information to provide any further input.
    1)
Is the user prompted that the server will be shutting down?
    2)
Does Task Scheduler show that the task ran at the scheduled time?
    3)
Are there any errors in %windir%\tasks\schedlgu.txt?
    4)
Does the problem still occur if the machine is in its own OU with blocked inheritance?
Does the problem still occur in a clean boot configuration with MSConfig
    Steps to clean boot machine:
    ================
Start > Run > Msconfig > Select Services > click "check box", "Hide all microsoft services" > Disable all
Start > Run > Msconfig > Select startup>  Disable all
    Reboot

  • In Nautilus, mounted network shares not showing up right away

I've noticed a strange problem recently (last couple of weeks) where my mounted network shares don't always show up right away in Nautilus (side bar or desktop- like they used to). For example, if I manually mount an NFS share in CL to /media/files it won't pop up in Nautilus right away like it used to. It will only show up after several minutes or if I plug in a thumb drive to trigger it to refresh. Also, when my computer is in suspend and I resume it, all predefined network share mounts in fstab that are indeed mounted won't be present in Nautilus upon resuming from suspend (they did before).
I'm not sure where the problem lies as Nautilus or dbus haven't been upgraded in the repositories recently. I tried looking at recently updated packages but I can't pin it on one that would be causing the problem. I'd like to get an idea of what packages are affected before submitting a bug report. If anyone has any idea on the package I can downgrade no problem and test this further.

Figured out the last filesystem upgrade from Decemeber is causing this. Bug posted- FS#27851.

  • Unable to browse network shares after installing Time Capsule

After installing my time capsule I am no longer able to browse the other computers on my network. I can ping them just fine but when I try to see them under "shared" or to brows to the ip address, it doesn't display the other computers. It sees the Time capsule just fine. The other computers are hooked up to the time capsule as well. One Computer is windows XP based and the other is Windows Vista. When I boot into my Windows XP (via boot camp) the other computers show up just fine and I'm able to touch the shared files. Its just the mac side that is not seeing them. They are all connected via ethernet cable connection. I appreciate any help to solving this. Thanks.

Make sure that the shares are unmounted before you sleep and see if it makes a difference. Not that it's a fix, just curious on how it reacts to see what could be going on.
Another good piece of information to get is to open Terminal and do a 'df'. See if you have any volumes mounted. They'll look like //Username@IP/Share and mounted to /Volumes/Sharename or /Volumes/Sharename-XX.
Try a 'sudo umount /Volumes/Sharename' and see if it gives you any errors back or dismounts it cleanly.

  • Network Shares Forgotten

Every time I want to open a file from within a program, the dialog box defaults to my 'Documents' folder. I then have to navigate to the afp network share folder again to open another file from the same folder. The dialog box seems to remember local folder positions but not network share folder positions. Any way I can force the dialog box to remember the last folder I was working in when using the saving and opening dialog boxes? Seems to happen on all programs I use.

It seems that I found a workaround for the problem (it is still a bug in my opinion):
here is my mounting-script that works well:
    delay 2
tell application "Finder" to open home
    tell application "Finder"
              try
                        mount volume "afp://username:password@mynas/share1"
      delay 1
                        mount volume "afp://username:password@mynas/share2"
              end try
    end tell
tell application "Finder" to close home
I have it in the login-items.
It basicly does the following: Open the finder with the home-view. Then mount the two shares. After that closes the finder window.
(Replace username:password with the credentials needed to mount the share, "mynas" with the name or adress of the server and "share1", "share2" with the acutal name of the share.)
The 2 seconds delay at the beginning is not really needed I suppose but since the script works I'll leave it there.
In order to see the shares in the favorites section of the finders sidebar you have to drag them there once by hand. Afterwards they will show up there everytime the particular share is mounted.
The trick is to open the finder window before the shares are mounted. When the script does this they will appear in the sidebar. I think there is the problem. When the script mounts the share without displaying the finder window, they will not show up in the sidebar. It is a bug introduced with ML.

  • How can I keep network shares mounted?

With our new SSD (Retina MBP) we're trying to embrace the paradigm of using network storage, yet we keep running into a very aggravating wrinkle. Every time the wind blows, it seems, we lose our network shares. They have to be re-mounted by doing an Apple-K and selecting them from our Time Capsule. First, is it normal to lose shares after closing the MBP for a moment, as when carrying it from one room to another? If it's not then our router is just going, being beyond the age when they're supposed to expire. If it is normal, is there anything to help make them more robust and keep them mounted? MountWatcher didn't seem to do the trick.

your network shares should stay mounted on your desktop, unless to specficially tell it to unmount after a certain time of inactivity or unless you loose connectivity.  I have 2 network shares that unmount after they expire idle time other than that they stay mounted

  • Network Shares Disappear on Wake From Sleep

I recently got a Mac mini to replace an aging Mac Pro. I copied all my data over and everything is running great, and much faster overall. But I'm having one strange bug. When I put my Mac mini to sleep, it wakes up and all of my network shares are gone. I have 4 shares I keep connected all the time, and many more I use occasionally. All of these servers are Macs. I never had an issue like this on the Mac Pro, in all it's years of service. Including the time it was running 10.8. But now, the mini dumps shares - I think every time it goes to sleep, if not, almost every time. It's a real hassle having to reconnect to each share every time you wake up. Plus it's no fun having open documents dissapear either. My network settings are pretty simple, my primary connection is gigabit ethernet. It's first in the "service order" list. I also have airport enabled but not connected. I leave it on so my computer can have location serivces. This is all exactly the same as the setup in the old Mac Pro.
    Any ideas?

If you must put your computer to sleep, you could use an applescript to re-mount your network shares when you wake it up.
    tell application "Finder"
mount volume "afp://servername.local/sharename" as user name aUsername with password aPassword
    end tell

  • Network Shares stopped showing up in Finder

    Hello,
My MBP has been working perfectly for over a year. Two or three days ogo it looks like the computer stopped seeing all network shares. Almost like nothing that should be seen with Bonjour is showing up. Printers, Time machine backup server (QNAP NAS), itunes libraries on other machines, etc. I can get to things by using their IP address so the network seems to be fine.
The firewall is completely turned off on the Mac and all the computers are connected over a single switch.
I tried deleting systempreferences and reinstalling the last combo update but neither solution worked. Running the latest version of Snow Leopard with all the latest updates.
The windows machines are having no trouble seeing each others iTunes libraries. When I start up iTunes on the windows boxes they briefly see the Mac iTunes library although it disappears from iTunes home sharing if i try to access it.
    Would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Completed a Time Machine backup to the last restore point which was before the issue and everything is looking good so far. I will install the latest updates and see if I can narrow down this issue if it happens again.
TimeMachine is awesome. Super easy to restore my machine although it did take 3 hrs.

  • Problems with mount and unmount of network shares

    Hi,
I use an Apple script to mount four network shares during startup of an OS 10.4.4 Powerbook. Unfortunately it seems that Tiger can't always mount them all. Sometimes it only mounts three of them, but pressing Command + K indicates that the fourth is already mounted because it's grayed out. How come I can't see it on neither the desktop nor the favorites list in a Finder window then?
I have a Tiger installation at home with Ciscos VPN Client 4.8 installed. I use that VPN client to gain access to the company's network. When the connection is established, I mount a share (with AFP over TCP/IP) on the company's server running Win2003 and ExtremeZ-IP.
When I close down Ciscos VPN Client, the mounted network share doesn't unmount automatically, and if I forget to toss that network drive in the trash before closing down or restarting my Mac, it hangs. Why can't it just unmount that drive automatically when the VPN connection is gone?

This may happens because broadcasts do not go through an IPSec tunnel.
Browsing Network Neighborhood is a function of the Microsoft browsing service. Any problems are usually because the PC or master browsers do not function properly. Network Neighborhood is officially not supported. However, it works if configured correctly. Browsing Network Neighborhood works by obtaining the browse list from either a master or backup browser. This list is obtained locally on your LAN by using NetBIOS Broadcasts to locate domain browsers.
    Inorder to resove this :
Make sure you have NetBIOS over TCP enabled on the adapter that you use to connect to the domain.
