Network Timeout freezes InDesign

A Win7 SP1 64bit PC is running InDesign CS5, and while working on a file, a user experienced a "network connection" error, and then InDesign froze, with no chance of recovery.
Is there any way to prevent ID from freezing when a network timeout issue occurs?
Why does it need to freeze anyway?  Why can't it simply halt whatever task it was trying to perform?

I think there is no question, scientifically or unscientifically, that we see far more reports of file corruption with networks than without.
Networks are complicated beasts, and they have many more possibly failure points than local disks do. (On the other hand, people with network storage are much more likely to have reliably backups; at least that's been true historically before the advent of both popular Internet-based backup and Apple's Time Machine). It's also the case that medium to large sites work almost exclusively with networks (though they may use database-driven document storage for which the traditional InDesign network-averse guidance may not apply), and they tend to deal with more documents than individuals do.
I think the single most definitive point in your favor of your position is this text from the CS5 help, Recommended workflow for InDesign documents:
You
can improve performance and prevent many problems by establishing
a good workflow to use with Adobe InDesign.
Open documents locally
Before you open
a document stored on a network volume or on removable media, copy
the document and any linked graphics to your local hard disk. The slower
access time and data transfer rate of a network volume or removable media
can cause data to become lost or corrupted, possibly damaging the document.
However, be aware of overriding someone else’s work if you copy
the local files back to a network server.
But that doesn't say networks are unsupported, it just says they may not be good.
But the person who wrote this was hopelessly naïve — network are a critical part of any modern business computer setup that is larger in scope than a sole proprietorship. And anyworkflow that expects users to copy files off the network to local disk and back is patently ludicrous. As the above acknowledges, copying them back is frought with peril.
Furthermore, the operating system vendors have expended no small effort to make networks mroe and more seamless and well-integrated, and to try to make them nearly indistiguishable from local disk—except. Except when they don't. Except when they can't. Except when applications need to know more about the underlying substrate of the filesystem, need better timing information, need to do things like memory-map files into RAM with guaranteed perforamance, etc. Though I am a bit skeptical that InDesign has any such needs...
Probably a good summary comes from a John Nack (Photoshop evangelist) blog post from 2008 (and networks have only become more popular), where he quotes an unnamed Adobe engineer, http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/06/filesaving_issu.html:
Directly writing to a network filing system adds a level of complexity,
which includes timing issues, network noise, performance, and other
potential issues. We’ve occasionally run into bugs with different
configurations/combinations, but as there are too many variants for us
to reliably test and certify all the clients, servers, hardware and
software, we recommend the safer course of working with files locally
and then copying them up to a file server when you’re done. While
directly reading/writing to network file systems should work in theory,
and while we do some limited testing in the most popular configurations
to verify that it does, we can not certify that it will work reliably in
your configuration.
But, of course, what do we mean by "support"? I am, by the way, interpretting your statement "not designed for working over networks," as "networks are not supported," and that may not be fair of me.
To me, "supported" means there is a reasonable expectation of the software working in the scenario, that Adobe will address bugs raised to them over the issue (rather than closing bugs saying, "at your own risk, sorry, bub!"), and Adobe will make a reasonable effort to keep it working. I think the situation with networks does qualify.
Unfortunately, it's hard to find anyone to say so. In part, I think, because there are so many variables nobody wants to be pinned down saying "it'll work" because you'll always eventually be able to point to a case where it won't. And the above blog post (part I didn't quote) talks about how a problem is really due to a bad interaction with Adobe product and MacOS X 10.5.3, which was later fixed by Apple.
Anyhow, we can also find plenty of evidence of Adobe having accepted and fixed bugs that relate to network behavior in InDesign. So I'm pretty confident that network use of InDesign si well-supported. But I certainly wouldn't say it was rock solid.
Hmm, this is kind of long. I will address the OP's issues in a seperate post.

  • Westell 327W Network Timeout

I'm having problems setting up Apache and SSH with my Westell 327W.
I have Verizon DSL -> Westell 327W Modem/Router -> Ubuntu Server with Apache Web Server and SSH Server.
The Ubuntu Server with apache and SSH is the DMZ Host.
Apache and SSH will work good for 5-10 minutes, then when you click on a link or do anything from the apache webpage... Firefox says Connecting to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, then it will say Page Load Error. Network Timeout. The server at xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is taking too long to respond.
I putty (ssh) into the Ubuntu server, everything will work good for 5-10 minutes, then putty will freeze up and say Putty Fatal Error. Network error: Software caused connection abort.
Apache or SSH will NOT work for 1-2 minutes. Firefox will say Network Timeout and SSH will not connect at all.
Then, everything will work again for 5-10 more minutes... then go down for 1-2 minutes, over and over and over....
Where can I find help for the Westell 327W Custom Firewall Rules? I dont have a help section on my 327W and cant find any information about making my own custom firewall rules.
I've read my problem occurs because of my firewall rules. The router drops the session because it drops it out of the state table or something like that?!?!?!? But I thought setting a PC as the DMZ host would put it outside of the firewall and the firewall rules wouldnt apply to the DMZ host?!?!?!?
    PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

    Ok, I thought so.
#1 In you are using GNOME, go to System >> Admininstration >> Networking.

#5 Change the configuration from DHCP to static (OR if it is already set to static)...
#6 For the IP Addres, you can set any number that you want to but not: 0, 1, 15 to 47 OR 255.

#8 Enter in the default gateway of: 192.168.1.1
#9 In the DNS Tab, enter in the DNS Servers that you want to use.
    b) If you desire to, you may enter in the DNS of 192.168.1.1
    c) OR the DNS Server address(es) that are in one of your router's screens. Maybe at Advanced -> DNS ?
#10 In your router, forward to the IP Address that you have setup on your computer.
This should resolve the issue. If not, in your router go to Advanced... In Advanced, if you see anything about UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) go there.
If UPnP is turned in the router, I would recommend turning that feature off.
If in Advanced you do not see anything about UPnP, please show a screen shot of the Advanced Screen...

  • Clicking "Search" freezes InDesign CS6 (and also InDesign CC)

On a specific InDesign document, clicking "Search" immediately freezes InDesign. For several reasons this is an inacceptable malfunction.
After restarting InDesign offers recovering my file. Clicking OK opens the file again without any problems but my workarea appears in default view and needs to be set to my adjustments.
"Save as" produces a much lighter file with 47mb instead of former 117mb?! No cure, the bug stays with this copy.
Another phenomenon seems to be coherent to the search-malfunction:
When trying to generate an automated "table of contens" InDesign freezes again.
I am working on CS6 Design and Web Creative Suite on an iMac 27" mid 2011, 16gb RAM. OSX Mavericks.
I installed the font (Helvetica) and checked the file on my MacBook (Mavericks) on CS6. Same problem, no solution.
The used fontfile is checked and appears to be OK.
No other InDesign files are affected by this bug.
Opening the file in InDesign CC shows the same problem.
Did anyone face a similar problem and knows a solution for it?
Thank you in advance for any hint that solves my problem!

  • Network timeout only for library upgrade items

I purchased an upgrade of my library, which totals 430 songs. The purchase went through fine, but when I would try to "check for downloads" so I could download the items, I kept getting "network timeout" errors. I ran the diagnostics, and after sending a support request, I was told it was probably my third-party firewall (even though it was properly configured and I had always been able to download without a problem).
I uninstalled the firewall and related security software, and when I continued to have trouble I was advised to disable all startup items. I did that, and even disabled Windows Firewall (which also was properly configured for iTunes), and I continued to get the same result.
I re-enabled the startup items and the Windows Firewall, and, just as an experiment, I tried purchasing an album from the store. The purchase went through and the album immediately downloaded without a problem. After that, I tried again to "check for available downloads." (Incidentally, iTunes shows there are 430 downloads available.) I again got the same error.
It seems clear, at this point, that I am able to connect and download, but there is something wrong on the other end of this deal that is preventing me from downloading the music I paid for. I am getting extremely frustrated, because by now I have spent hours and hours trying to get the music I paid for.
Anyone else experience anything like this, where the "update library" purchases seem to be the only thing you can't get to?

I was finally able to have the issue bumped up to a Senior Tech, who was able to help me. According to him, some ISPs have a problem with very large downloads. Over the course of several days, we broke the library upgrade into smaller chunks, with him placing the songs into the queue.
We did have a further problem at one point where some of the "upgraded" songs were duplicates of the m4p files (rather than the unprotected files). We never figured out the problem there, but he re-placed all 430 of the upgraded songs in my download queue, and this time the whole set of 430 downloaded.
So I'm not sure why it would work that time, if it was my ISP causing the difficulty, but whatever. It only took about three weeks of work and a hundred bucks or so, but I now have the items able to be upgraded.
I have to give a big thumbs-up to the techs I finally dealt with when I took matters into my own hands and called AppleCare--going through the ExpressLane was useless and a waste of time. Notody even reads the emails--all you get are form replies telling you to do what you already say you have done.

  • Still gettting error 33162 despite increasing network timeouts

    Hi All,
I have an application that frequently displays error code 33162.  I followed the advice at http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/C4E77D7E9BECBAFE86256C6200544289 and doubled my network timeouts to 4 seconds timeout and 10 seconds initial connect timeout.  I still get the error however.  When I get the error the block diagram briefly flashes on one of the blocks, but it's too fast to really see.
Any advice on how to solve this error condition?
    Thanks,
    Sean

    Hi,
I am having the problem occur repeatedly again today.  My fieldpoint hardware is cFP-2000.  I am currently seeing repeated 33162 errors, so many that I have to stop my application.
The attached screenshot shows where the error is occuring.  We'd really appreciate any advice on this problem.  Our fieldpoint modules are located close to some heavy AC equipment, so hopefully the EM fields from this are not affecting them.
    Thanks,
    Sean

  • Idle Processes, network timeouts ISL

Is there any way to determine the length of time a client or process has
been idle rather than merely if it is idle? How does the ISL determine
which connections have been idle when invoking it's network timeout value?

    Thanks Per!
The T_CLIENT class contains a TA_IDLETIME function which returns the no.

  • Network timeout (err = -3259) with iOS 5.0 update

When downloading the update for iOS 5.0 in iTunes, Win7 machine, and trying to update iPhone 4, it will get to the very end of the download and then give the network timeout error. This happens every single time, and after the file has already downloaded completely. The error code is (err = -3259).
This is a pain because the download is very slow, presumably because everyone is trying to update right now.

Ok, so the trouble I experienced was last week during the fury of downloading from iPhone users all over Earth. I left the problem alone from 10/14-10/18. This morning, I started again. Turned my pc on from it's previously "Shut Down" state, opened iTunes, connected the phone, attempted to DL iOS5. After 20 minutes, I got a similar message, however, this time it wasn't marked 'err-3259'. It said only verbiage to the effect of "the network timed out." I then disabled my Kaspersky and Firewall. Without hope and with much reluctance, I tried the DL again. After several minutes, while I was working on something else, I noticed my phone went into "sync" mode. The rest is history! The DL and updates completed and now the phone is working as it should with the updates (It's an iPhone 4). Lastly, I reinstated protection from Anti-virus and Firewall. Give this a try and I hope it works for you.

  • Slow network timeouts, page loading when host is bad

I just got a new iMac, and it takes a long time to timeout network connections to bad hosts. For example, on the Mac it's replacing I can just type "apple" into the Safari address bar, and since that's not a real address Safari would be smart enough enough to almost instantly replace it with "www.apple.com". The new iMac takes 30 seconds to do this. It causes a number of web sites to load slowly since quite a few seem to pull non-essential resources from other servers that aren't always up (ads, scripts, etc.).
I can verify that it takes 30 seconds by running "time ping apple" in the Terminal, which takes almost exactly 30 seconds each time before saying "cannot resolve host". The old Mac fails instantly. Can someone else try this on Snow Leopard an let me know if it's fast or slow for you. I restarted in bootcamp/Windows 7 and I do not have this issue there: 'ping' times out right away.
I don't think this is a DNS issue since the two macs have the same DNS server. Also, "nslookup apple" on the new Mac immediately says "can't find apple," like I'd expect.
Any ideas on what causes this delay? Is this a configurable network setting somewhere? The new Mac is on Snow Leopard; the old is on plain Leopard. I'm not going through any proxy servers or running any ad blockers or the like.

You can speed up iWeb by having each website on a separate Domain file and dividing up
larger sites into sections in much the same way...

  • Network printing and Indesign cs3

Since updating to 10.5.3 network printing has not worked with indesign cs3. We are now using 10.5.4.
It worked with 10.4.x on the same network. I don't think the printer or the printer driver is the problem but if it matters we are using an hp deskjet 940c. Driver for the printer was updated in February when we purchased the macbook pro we are using.
I've read a bunch of stuff on this and given that it works in 10.4.x with the same printer, drivers, and application program, I'm forced to conclude the problem lies in the OS which is the only difference.
Any help you can give would be appreciated.

    Hello Rich,
Can you explain how the printer is networked. Is it shared by another or does it have its own ip address? (Don't know the model so sorry for the question)
If it is a standalone networked printer, what connection method (protocol) do you use for the printer queue?
Are you able to print from other applications?
Can you post the last 10 entries of the cups error log. You can find this by opening the printer queue, clicking the work Printer in the menu bar and selecting 'Log & History'.

  • Small Business Network Switch Freezes Intermittently

    Background:
I am managing a small Novell NetWare environment that consists of: (2) Netware 6.5 SP6 boxes, (7) Windows XP SP3 workstations, and (2) network printers. These devices are all connected to a basic, unmanaged, 10/100/1000 Mbps switch (Netgear JGS524).
    The Issue:
Unexpectedly, all devices on the Network will randomly lose connectivity at the same time (no pings go thru to/from any device), and the lights on the front of the switch "freeze" in their current state (for example, if I pull a network cable out of a switch port, it will remain illuminated in its last state, as if the cable were still plugged in). The only way to restore connectivity at this point is to reset the switch by cycling the power on/off.
    Troubleshooting History:
We've been experiencing this problem for quite some time, and at first I assumed the switch was bad, so I replaced it with a different model only to find that the issue still occurs (the switch listed above is the current model we're using).
I'm having trouble diagnosing this problem, as I can't seem to correlate what's happening on the network to initiate the switch lock-up. Sometimes it will happen twice in one day, and sometimes it will go 3 or 4 days with no problems. It would be hard to leave a packet scan running for 3 days and then try to determine at what time the lockup occurred if Im not continually observing the switch 24/7.
Anyway, any thoughts on a good approach to narrowing down what's causing this? Or any obvious culprits that might exist in a Netware environment that could be causing a broadcast storm?
    Thanks!
    Joe

When you say you've replaced the switch with a different model...what did you mean by that? A different vendor or same vendor just different model of the same?
I'd probably try a different switch altogether...but what are you running on the Netware boxes? Most services on Netware have pretty good log files. I would start with that. Also, you can get yourself a pretty easy to set up (free) network monitoring system and sue that for diagnosis.

  • Help...anchored objects in CS4 freezes Indesign

I was really excited to use anchored objects in a recent project where I wanted to insert a bunch of callout text boxes peppered throughout the document layout that would reflow with it's neighboring text as I made changes.
When I had about 4 text boxes placed, InDesign CS4 would freeze with the spinning rainbow wait cursor spinning forever. It would freeze just as I started entering settings in the "custom" anchored object dialogue window.
What am I doing wrong? Or is this a bug?
Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Every other file I have opens fine, but this one just freezes up the program.   I tried recovering, deleting the recovery file, etc....
It sounds like Peter has it hand, but some possibilities are Preflight and SING; you can try disabling them both. What OS?
    What version of InDesign? 6.0.6?
