Network times out on Power Mac

My G4 Power Mac (running 10.4) can load many web pages ok, but if there is a large file or a sustained download, such as streaming video, it will stop downloading and time out. I can open a new Safari page and start over, no problem.
Same thing for file transfers between machines on my network. It will stop transferring.
Software update sometimes finishes evaluating my need for updates, but if I try to update it usually fails before files are downloaded.
This machine is currently running in a place where another machine was, using the same network connection, cable etc. The other machine had no problem, while this machine exhibits the problem wherever I put it.
Is it likely a hardware issue (I've done a clean install of the OS)? Is there an inexpensive network card that is supported by 10.4 that I can put on this machine to find out?

You can use Network Utility to look at the error counts for your Ethernet interface. Anything over a handful of errors at startup usually indicates a problem.
If you have a Router with multiple ports, try a different port. My experience is that the ports don't fail outright, they just get more and more errors.
There is an Apple Ethernet 10/100 PCI card that was made for older Macs like the 8600 and beige G3. They are available from time to time on the used market. If you get another brand, be sure to get the Mac drivers with it -- many of the makers are out of business and the drivers are hard to find.

have an 8g ipod touch which has had problems trying to play games and downloading update 4.2.1. went to the apple store who kindly downloaded the software update but now can't synch and generates multiple error messages; device times out, internal device error, network times out, duplicate file and too many files open etc etc. have latest i tunes download and diagnostic test ok. what can i do?

Does the ext directory have the php_oci8.dll? In the original steps the PHP dir is renamed. In the given php.in the extension_dir looks like it has been updated correctly. Since PHP distributes php_oci8.dll by default I reckon there would be a very good chance that the problem was somewhere else. Since this is an old thread I don't think we'll get much value from speculation.

  • HP Color LaserJet CP1520nw will not connect to network (time out repeatedly)

My HP LaserJet CP1520nw won't connet to my wireless router upon installation, no many how many times I've been asked to connect it to the computer via a USB printer cable.   I uninstalled and reinstalled all software, and each time I try to set it up for wireless connectivity by connecting my computer and the printer via a USB printer cable, it gets to 99%  installed on the progress bar and sits there until it times out.  I suspect one of the follow but am open to other ideas from those more knowledgeable:
    1.  Is the printer locked onto some old, initial configuration from a previous wireless network that needs to be purged of addresses, etc. before it can accept the new ones?
    2.  Could my WPA WPA2 PSK AES encrytion be messing it up?  Are the modern firmware and updates designed to accept these ?  I never have gotten to a screen where it asks for my encyption key or even a WPS pass phrase.  What to do if so?
    3.  Could Church Lady be correct and that it is Satan preventing the installation?  If so, what icons does he use to watch out for and will my Norton anti-virus and malware quarantine him to Hell automatically or does it require manual enforcement?

    Hi @Marvalina1968,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that your HP Color LaserJet CP1520nw will not connect to network with Windows 7. I am sorry to hear this, but happy to help!
    First to answer your questions:
It is possible the printer could be locked to an old configuration and needs to be reset.
I don't think your WPA WPA2 PSK AES encrytion could be messing it up, unless you got some really strange characters in your password.
Your Norton antivirus, could possible be causing the installation to fail.
Please take a look through the following guides:
'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the HP Printer Will Not Print.
Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection.
If the guides do not resolve the issue, please try the following:
Uninstall the software. Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Clean boot the computer. How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Disable any antivirus programs. Disable antivirus software.
Disable any firewall programs. Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
Re-install the software. HP LaserJet Full Feature Software and Driver.
Hope this solves your problem, and have a good day!

  • Connection to Playstation Network Times Out

I have Westell G90-610015-20 DSL Modem. I have ASUS Wireless Router RT-N12 connected to it.
My PS3 is able to connect (wirelessly) to the wireless network. I can update the firmware, and it is able to download any update for any game. However everytime I tried to login into Playstation Network, it would time out. When I do Internet Connection Test in PS3, the results for "Obtain IP Address" and "Internet Connection" are Succeeded, but for "Playstation Network" failed.
I have read some postings regarding the same issue, but found no solution.
    Please advice.
    Thank you in advance.

    Anyone with a fix?
My previous AirPort Extreme station worked the PowerBookG4 wirelessB well. And those settings were transferred to the TimeCapsule with installation. All my other machines connect perfectly to it. Any advice?

    Update fixed it.

  • Why do I keep getting a Network time out message when trying to get current update on my 3GS?

  • My 3gs iphone update 4.3.3 network times out

can anyone tell how to update my iphone 3gs to 4.3.3 without going through itunes, because it always times out in itunes

There's no way to update without iTunes until iOS 5 is released.  Disable ALL security apps (firewall, antivirus/spyware) running on your computer when updating.

  • Network time out while updating to 2.2.1

I have tried unsuccessfully more than 2 months now to update my iPhone to 2.2.1. Each time it takes 25 minutes to download the update, then I receive an error message saying the network has timed out. The same problem happened last time when I tried to update to 2.2 and I just keep trying once every while and just out of the blue my iphone finally got updated to 2.2 finally. I think this is really annoying when everytime there is an updated sofeware coming up and same problem happened, especially when some of the applications in itunes store can only worked with the lastest sofeware version!
Also, after I have updated my itunes to version 8.2.0.23, the program is not able to read any of the music that I have previously downloaded and I have to do it manually again!
Can someone in Apple do something about these software problems or is it the kind of service standard that I should expect from such an important product from such a prestigious company?

If you have a PC, try temporarily disabling your firewall and your anti-virus software and any other anti-whatever that is required with Windows before downloading the update. Since an iPhone firmware update includes an installer and is a large download, this likely causes problems with anti-virus software that is required with Windows.
Was all or most of your iTunes music purchased from the iTunes store, or was it imported into your iTunes library from another source?

  • Network time out issues

My wife's fairly new Mac Mini keeps on timing out while trying to connect to our Apple Airport. All of or other Apple devices have no issues connecting.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 3
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts.
    Step 4
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 5
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 6
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.

  • Network times out when itunes re-sent lost files but not for new purchases.

My backup drive crashed and lost all my itunes files. Itunes was kind enough to re-send all my purchases (1 time only offer). The only problem is, I can't download them. My downloads shows over 700 files available for download but when I to download them it gives me the "unable to check for available downloads" and "your network connection timed out". I tried all the usual tricks, I uninstalled and re-installed itunes, turned off all anti-virus and firewalls, I ran the flushdns, I did the IE "uncheck security certificate". Nothing. Here's the kicker, I purchased a different television series from itunes store and it downloaded without any problems. I even tried to simultaneously check available downloads as the new TV series was downloading and it still have the same error message.
    Any ideas?

With 700 downloads, you are probably going to have to go back to itunes support and ask them to split your downloads up into chunks. Other folks have had to ask itunes store support to put 99 items in their download queue, then the next 99, until they are all downloaded.
Ask them to do that for you. Don't open a new ticket; just keep replying to whatever case you had already opened.
Or- if you are comfortable changing registry keys, try this:
