Network Two Computers

I have a Power Mac G-4 ver. 10.4.11 and an iMac 10.5.8. The iMac is the main family computer it has the printer and internet connection. The G-4 is for music production. It has no printer or internet connection. I have a firewire 800/400 9-Pin to 6-Pin cable to connect the two computers to one another.
How can I configure the two so that the G-4 and iMac access files and programs i.e. iTunes, transfer photos, and audio files with one another? Also, so that the G-4 can print and access the internet through the iMac.

This page will show you how to set up File Sharing.

  • Networking two computers

I have a iMac running Snow Leopard. It is connected to the internet via a DSL dial up modem and cat5 cable connected to the ethernet card in the computer.
I just bought a used G4 14" iBook, which is in perfect condition and I am very happy to have it. The G4 has Tiger and I may upgrade it in time. It has Office loaded on it.
At this time, I don't want to use the G4 outside the house, so am not interested in wireless as such.
I want to be able to leave the iMac in one room and use the G4 in another room in the house. The two rooms are side by side and I can run cables (or whatever) through the wall if necessary.
I want to network the two computers, so they both connect to the internet and I can share and transfer files and access the printer.
I would appreciate help, as to how to accomplish this. I will require clear instructions as I am really raw in knowledge of these things. It would help if you give brand names and types of cables and hardware, where and how they connect, what settings and how, and such.
If there are clear instructions available in a website, that will do.
    Thanks very much.
    Ted

Does the iBook have Airport? Assuming your DSL modem is not wifi capable you should be able to share the internet from the iMac and network the two computers via 'Internet Sharing'.
On the iBook (I'm a bit unsure exactly where you'll find this preference as I haven't touched Tiger for while although it is what you're looking for ): in Leopard/Snow Leopard you find it in System Preferences>Network - hopefully you'll seen Airport on the left, if so turn it on.
Also turn Airport on on the iMac.
On the iMac: System Preferences>Sharing. Highlight (but don't tick yet) Internet Sharing, select 'airport options' and give your network a name and encryption and OK it. Back at the 'sharing' window from Share your connection select 'Ethernet' To computers using 'Airport' (put a tick) and then put a tick against 'Internet Sharing' on the left. Save your changes.
I think you may need to restart the computers and then you should be able to do what you're after.
The iBook will (hopefully) find the network, join it, adding the password you gave it on the iMac and you should be good to go.
Of course, if the iMac is not switched on you won't be able to access the internet on the iBook.
    Good luck.

  • Can two computers use same iTunes library on a network drive?

Can two computers use directly (rather than share) the same iTunes library on a network drive?
My media library is on a network drive attached to my Airport Extreme. Right now I share the library with my desktop Mac. I can share fine, but I would like to be able to add, delete, and make other changes in the media library from both computers. The two computers would not be accessing the library at the same time as I am the sole user of both.

I appreciate your input and I think you're right about this being impossible. But just to clarify, you say I can't "have multiple machines accessing the same music files from a shared location." I can have multiple machines accessing the same music files from a shared location--I just can't have them accessing the same music files simultaneously--which may have been what you meant. For my situation, I think it will be less work to just quit iTunes on my server when I want to run it on my client (using Chicken of the VNC). It's not ideal, but it's less time-consuming than periodically syncing three computers.
    Again, thanks for the input.

  • NO internet in the network except for two computers after installing ASA 5505

    Hi Guys,,,
I dont know if any of you guys had a problem like this... I installed a CISCO ASA5505 with 50 user license  to my network as the gateway firewall. So ASA is acting as the gaeway router which is connected to a fibre circuit and also it gives DHCP to the network. The strange thing is that except for two computers rest does not have internet. I also have an asterisk phone system which works fine..
I tried everything.... static IP's DHCP, DNS nothing worked. But strange enough two computers works fine and have internet.. but are no special computers. One is Win XP and the other one is Win7. When I troubleshoot the problem in win 7 on one of the computers it says
"The remote device or resource won't accept the connection"
I have no idea now... any help would be great...
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Amal.
I hope the gateway of the comupters are configured as ASA.. Are you able to ping your gateway from the PC where you dont have access to internet and also check whether the translation is happening on ASA when you are trying to access the internet ( show xlate  | i 'local ip'
It would be great if you could share the ASA config as well
    regards
    Harish.

  • How can i see all the songs I already purchased on my two computers. I don't have a network

how can i see all the songs I already purchased on my two computers. I don't have a network

I guess the question is how can I listen to all my songs that i bought from my two computers if i want to listen to all of them in one computer. I don't have a network.  Is there a web base site I can do that? or anything else?
    Please help
Songs that you purchase from the iTunes Store are simply files.  They only sit on the computer where you purchase them, until you copy them to another computer.
That is how it works.  There is no web site where you can play all your files.  It's primitive I know, but there may be changes coming.

  • Syncing two computers via network session

    hi
this topic started out in another thread, really should have it's own though...
so i want to sync two computers via a "network session".
one is a G4 (dual 800 running logic pro 7.2.2) the other is my macbook pro running logic pro 6.4.2.
basically all i am using the macbook for is to playback a quicktime movie...
now i have successfully got the network session going in "Audio Midi Setup", but for the life of me can't get the logic on the macbook pro to slave up. even though mtc is set up and the logic 7.2.2 is set up to send mtc via the network session.
if anyone has any ideas...please feel free...
    cheers, warner

    really?
    cool.
have been researching this a little bit (not that i have the time - just got curious).
there are a couple of relaly interesting apps out there that can take MTC and play video. one in particular was very interesting....check this out:

  • Trying to network two home computers with RT31P2

Hey everyone.  I'm having a maddening time trying to network two home computers together.  As it stands there are three total computers in the household.  Desktop A, Desktop B, and a Laptop.  As it stands, the Laptop and Desktop A can interact with each other using the "Workgroups" function.  However, I can't get Desktop B to interact with either of the others.  It just so happens that Desktop B is running Vista, while the other two use XP.
    So to recap:
    Desktop A uses XP
    Desktop B uses Vista
    Laptop uses XP
Using a RT31P2 Broadband Router (which the two desktops are connected to)
And a WAP54G Wireless-G access point (for the laptop)
How can I get Desktop B to interact with the other two?  My main goal is for Desktop A and the Laptop to be able to connect to Desktop B to share files and use it's printer.

The very first thing you need to be able to ping the ip address of individual pc from another one & also make sure that you disable the firewalls on all the pc's & you need to enable file & printer sharing on your pc & you should be able to interact each pc from another one.

  • Same account name on two computers can't write over network

I'm having great difficulty synchronizing two computers. One is an iMac and the other is a MBP. They are both used only by me for work. I don't need to share them with anyone else, only with each other. The main account is exactly the same on both of them as the iMac is a Migration of the MBP, so the user name and password are identical.
Regardless of how I set sharing/permissions on any given folder, I can only read in either direction. Whenever I try to write, it asks for authentication (odd since the volume is already mounted), then says the file already exists (even though it doesn't) would you like to overwrite? I click overwrite, and then it comes back and says "you can't overwrite since the file already exists". Huh?? Looking at the destination the file does exist, but is zero bytes.
I finally created a dummy admin account on one of the machines, logged into this account from the other, and then things work like you would expect. I can write to those directories of the main account that have write privileges and not to those that don't.
So my question, is there anyway to just log into the main account, which is exactly the same on both machines and be able to write? This odd behavior seemed to start somewhere around 10.5 as I was always able to do this before.
    Thanks,
    Darryl

I am having exactly the same problem, also with an iMac and a MBP. My iMac is about 6 weeks old, and I migrated via Time Machine. I can read the files from the connected machine, but cannot write, regardless of which is the host. Permissions are all fine.
I did notice one thing: the UUID number for the accounts is the same (accounts have same name as with darrylh). You can find this under System Preferenes>Accounts and right click or control-click on the account name after unlocking it. I am working with Apple support on this, but no resolution yet. I suspect that the UUID (Universally Unique ID) should not be the same on two machines, but I don't know the consequences of changing it or which one to change.
    Thanks.

  • Can two computers use the same backup??

I restored a seperate Macbook pro from the Time machine backup of MY Macbook. So I have two computers operating from the same backup. Is that recommended??

Yes, it should do. Once you change the name of the computer make sure you reset TM
    See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
When you start the backup it will create a new sparsebundle.. (like a virtual disk that holds the backup on network drives) and you will be able to check that it is correct because it should be a new full backup.
Then you can do a full backup of one of the machines.. the other machine can continue to use the original backup.

  • HT1449 how do you move all music from two computers into one itunes account?

How do you move all music from two computers into one itunes account?

An "iTunes account" is an online account you use for buying music, like a bank account.  An iTunes collection is the media you see when you open iTunes. Which do you mean?
If it is two computers, it would also help to know where these are located. Are they on the same local network? If they are, try Home Sharing (and you have control of both and you aren't just trying to get music fro your computer to your friend's computer in another state).  If they are not, you'll have to use an external hard drive or flash drive.
Is this on a PC? Your computer information says Windows but you posted this in the iTunes for Mac forum.

  • Technical question:  Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??

    Technical question:
Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??
Here's a little more information on what I am trying to do.
I have a desktop computer with 4tb worth of pictures that has Lightroom and Photoshop on it. I also have a laptop with Photoshop and Lightroom. I would like to be able to edit those same pictures with their current edits that are currently on my desktop on my laptop. If this can be done, I'm sure I need to be on the same wifi network for my laptop to be able to access my desktop's photo library. I am technically savvy enough to map a network drive, but how do I get my two Lightroom catalogs to sync when I make a change on one of my computers? Would i be working only on one catalog? Or two separate catalogs that would need to be manually synced to the other computer? Would it be beneficial to put my lightroom catalog on something like dropbox?
I'd appreciate any information or tutorials if someone knows how to do this.

I do this by having my LR catalog and photos on an external drive that I swap between the two computers.  I am on Windows and have the same drive letter assigned to the drive on both computers.
Because the photos are on a portable drive I back up the portable drive to another hard-drive every night or after important work, because portable drives are susceptible to damage or loss.

  • Can I put my library on an external hard drive and use it between two computers?

Can I put my library on an external hard drive and use it between two computers? I have two MBP; I will refer to one as computer A and to the other as computer B. I would like to be able to plug in my external hard drive, boot up iTunes, and if there were any changes made to the library previous to its last time accessed on this compluter, they show up on that computer, regardless of being imported on the other.
A hypothetical example: I import three albums called 1, 2, and 3 on computer A over a week or so. I take the external hard drive and plug it into computer B. The entire library which was visible on A, is visible on B, including albums 1, 2, and 3.
Is this possible? If so, what files need to be copied onto the external? I'm trying some different combinations, trial and error basically. Hopefully someone knows and can answer before I mess up my library. I also want to do this to free up space on my computer. All importing will be done from disc.

iTunes/Preferences/Advanced : point your iTunes to the new location of the Library.
Set "Share on local network" in the Sharing tab, and you or everyone on the local network can play your music.
You make a backup first of the Library.
Move the follwing to the new location:
    /Users/your username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
    have fun.

  • How to use ONE IPod on TWO Computers

I have an Desktop-PC using ITunes 5.0 and an IPod 20 GB. When I connect my IPod with my Laptop, the complete IPod is deleting by the ITunes on the Laptop. How can I use ONE IPod on TWO Computers without deleting the music hole time?!

I think you need to manually update on at least the computer that has the smaller music selection.
it may be best to turn off automatic updates on both machines and manually add and delete songs.
or you could network both computers to share one music library

  • How do i share files between two computers using the ethernet?

i have bought a cord that is ethernet to ethernet. i do not understand how or where to go after the two computers are seemingly connected. i have a bunch of photos on iphoto id like to transfer. thank you.

Out of curiosity do you already have a home network? If so do both computers connect to the network? In this case just use File Sharing which is enabled in the Sharing preferences.
