Network users file permissions won't allow documents to be moved or deleted

Sorry for the confusing title.
It's late, and if I've missed any details, please feel free to ask for them.
I've migrated a couple of desktop users to a network user based environment.
Data files were copied off workstations to an external drive, which were then placed on the file server.
Local computers seem to connect fine.
All show the network user list.
Network users can login (Do not want to sync mobile account)
Logged in user can create files just fine, save files etc. These files can seem to be moved around the users home just fine.
however if said user needs to move an existing file in their own home/documents folder or desktop or wants to delete a file, they get a prompt for the local admin of the computer their working on. Even if this account is entered, it doesn't seem to allow the requested change to take place.
If i attempt to open, then save over an existing file, it makes no difference.
if i do a save as to a new file (ie. different name), then it behaves properly.
doing a permissions comparison of a new file vs an old file, they have matching permissions but the existing files have an extra set of "everyone" permissions.
I can't seem to modify this from the user or even from the server, ie. remove the extra everyone to make them similar.
It would seem to be a permissions issue, but it just doesn't make any sense.
Does anyone have any suggestions for permissions or a settings to check?
I've gone to the point of propagating full read/write access to the home directory for all users, inherit to child files and folders, but it just doesn't seem to make a difference
I'm looking for a global fix, as clearly adjusting all these individual files is unacceptable.
Thanks in advance,
James

  • Transferring network user files from Windows Server 2003 to Mac OSX 10.5.8

I'm wondering if any network admins out there have a suggested method of transferring network user files from a Windows Server 2003 to an XServe running 10.5.8?
When we did the file transfer, clicking and dragging, there were a myriad permissions issues that subsequently arose. Surely there is a way to strip permissions off files PRIOR to the transfer?? Maybe not, but I'm wondering how you folks have done it.
We have had nothing but persistent permissions issues since the transfer (i.e. folks who should have access to files, being denied access, including the local server admin!!). This also translates to synch errors for network mobile accounts.

This process does not appear to work for me.  I'm running 10.8.3.  I created a new user for a guest staying with me.  They have gone now and I am attempting to either change the password or delete the user.  It won't allow me to choose the user I created.  I am logged in as myself and it states that I am an "Admin".  The user I'm attempting to change is listed as a "standard" user and there is a white checkmark inside an orange circular background on the user pic in the list of users.
Can someone help me?  I am having a hard time believing that OSx will allow me to create users and allow them use of my computer and it's drives, yet it will not allow me to change the password so I can monitor what they might have been doing while logged on?  What if this were my child?  This guest left under sketchy circumstances, and I'd really like to be able to ensure they were not using my computer to do illegal things or to have illegal communications.
Any help would be appreciated.  (It's odd that it was so simple to "create" a user and set a password for them.......but it's complicated or a little known process to reverse.
    Thanks.

Here are two screen shots to show you what I am seeing.  The first screen shot shows it allowing me to select (highlighted in blue) my admin user (which is what I am locced in as).  The second screen shot shows it allowing me to select the "Guest" user (highlighted in blue).  However when I click on the user "Orion" nothing happens.  It will not change to highlight that user.

  • Local copy of Network User files

With the latest OS X Server, I see how you can use a Network User account to log onto the server or any "bound" client machine on the home network.  However, when leaving home with a "client" machine (e.g. MacAir with Mountain Lion), is their someway to have a local copy of the Network User files on the client?  Hopefully you can see the objective of this question: while at home, use any machine to work with the files, but when you leave the network, how can you have a synchronized copy of the files on a Mac laptop?  If needed I can dedicate a client machine for each user, so maybe there's a way to designate the files of a Network User on another, non-server, client machine like a Mac laptop?

I have the same question, cause I do not have more space on iCloud for more backups, and I really want to save an older backup from my iPhone, that speceific backup was the last one before my iPhone was stoled. if anyone know if it is posible to locate that file on "iCloud" and save it, I use iCloud instead of iTunes, and I do not know where to look for it...
    thanks

  • Sharing on network servers - file permissions broken - folders won't move

We have Xinet, Helios and Apple networked file servers where all our files and workflow folders are held.
Since we have upgraded to Snow Leopard we are having many gliches with moving files and folders from one folder to another within the mounted file server on our desktop macs. For example.
Mac 1 moves a file from a "work to be done" folder on the server to an "out on proof" folder (also on the same server mount).
Then Mac 2 tries to double click the file in the "out on proof" folder on the server in order to work on it and the following error comes up "application can't be found" and " The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -43)."
Also folders will erratically copy instead of moving .... some of the time.
Also Photoshop files will not save back onto the file server "file cannot be found".
I have started the process of logging this with Apple as it is a real pain.
    Anybody else seeing this problem

It seems that you are having similar problems. Just for the record, I have tried this on brand new macs with no third party software installed, on a stand alone network switch ( no other computers or firewalls or servers involved ). It is definitely an OS issue. I did suspect spotlight but the problem still occurs with spot light disabled. I have logged it with Apple which in itself was not easy.

  • ITunes refuses to import Amazon MP3 album, claims permissions won't allow me. What?

    I download through Amazon MP3.
I downloaded Muse's album and imported that into iTunes just fine, but for whatever reason, when I downloaded the Black Keys album El Camino it refuses to play ball.
I get "Attempting to copy to the disk "Macintosh HD" failed. You do not have enough access privileges for this."
Now, I did a permissions repair with Onyx, and even checked all the folders to make sure the permissions wasn't weirdly set, but nothing is wrong with those folders. They're not locked at all.
I can play the song files when I press space bar or even in things like VLC, but iTunes refuses to play ball for some reason. Is this an iTunes problem or Amazon? And if you could possibly point me to a forum post that is this exact problem I'd love you forever as I'm about to go on a cross-country road trip and would really love to play some Black Keys.

That's a workaround, but it doesn't really solve the mystery.  Ordinarily, when you add music to your library, iTunes will create a directory with the Artist name and a subdirectory with the Album name.  My guess is there's something weird about one of these fields, perhaps an unprintable character that you can't see, and when it tries to create the directories it fails (maybe I was too hasty in not blaming Amazon!).  It might even be one of the individual song names.
    If you're happy with this solution, fine, but if you want to track it down, I'd try this;
    - select all the songs, do (right-click->get info)
    - Delete and reenter the Artist and Album names.  Make sure you clear the whole field
and don't use cut and paste.
    - reenable the copy and manage options
      - Try dragging the songs in again.
      - If that doesn't work, try dragging one at a time to see if a particular song is causing the problem.
      - If that's the case, check the fields for that song, and maybe reenter the title.
Note, if this works, you'll end up with two copies of everything, and you'll have to delete the one that wasn't copied.
In any event, I'd reenable the copy and manage options, so future music will be correctly copied.

  • OEM Scheduled Job Not Assuming OS User File Permissions

I have defined and scheduled a job using OEM Grid Control that executes an OS level command which is a script containing the HP-UX find command. When I run the script at the OS level the script completes successfully. When the job scheduler runs the job it fails because the find command doesn't have permission to recursively traverse the subdirectories even though the subdirectories are owned by the process executing the find command. The preferred credentials for the job are set to the same user that I used to run the job manually. Why would this be happening?
We're using OEM Grid Control 10.2.0.3.0 running on Linux used to manage Oracle 10G on HP-UX. Please help.

  • Trying to upgrade Camera Raw- Elements file agent won't allow

While trying to upgrade Camera Raw, Elements 5.0 has an error message that says to turnoff Elements 5.0 File agent. I cannot find this anywhere. I use CS3 and Elements 5.0 but cannot upgrade to the new camera raw. Any one know how to shut off Photoshop Elements 5.0 file agent.exe ???
    Thanks.

The file PhotoshopElementsFileAgent.exe is located in C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0. It may be on the list of Windows XP
Services. Possibly also listed as Adobe Active File Monitor or Adobe Active
File Monitor V5. Set any and all of these services to 'Disabled'.
Additionally, it is a good idea to go to Elements Organizer preferences and
uncheck 'Automatically check for Services' and also uncheck 'Auto Launch
Adobe File Downloader on Device Connect'.
And, yes, ACR 4.3.1 should be manually installed. As a matter of fact, turn
off the automatic updater service, too (in >Help).

  • I recently had my hard drive replaced and now iTunes won't allow me sync my iPhone without deleting all the media contents and replacing it with the existing library. Is there another way without erasing everything?

I have already backed up my iPhone, yet it still will not allow me to move the contents of my phone onto my computer. Rather, it wants to delete everything off of my phone and replace it with the contents on my iTunes. Is there a way I can integrate both my iTunes and iPhone? There used to be autofill on iTunes, but I can no longer find it.

  • Acrobat Pro won't allow to save with Reader Extended Features

I've saved forms this way before because all the users of our forms only have the free Reader version. For some reason it now won't allow me to save with the extended features. When I save as and hover over "Reader Extended PDF" it shows my 3 options but none of them are clickable. I don't know why it has saved before, but it won't now.
I also have a secondary issue. A form I previously, successfully saved this way is now not working for one of the users. It won't allow her to save the information she inputs. To my knowledge it has not been changed and it has only been used by a few people. Why would it suddenly stop allowing her to save?
I am working on a Mac, but the users are all on PC's. I've never had this be an issue before though.

Be sure you're not in form editing mode when you attempt to enable the document.
Regarding not being able to save with Reader after initially being able to, this has been reported before many times but the casue is often elusive. The document has somehow changed in a way that prevents the usage rights from being validated. This is not supposed to happen, but it does.

first off, what license do you have installed on the ASA (show version will tell you that)?
Second, if I remember correctly trunk in HP terms does not mean the same as trunk in Cisco terms.  In HP a trunk refers to the bundling of an interface in what Cisco calls Etherchannels or Portchannels (which the 5505 does not support)
Also you need to configure names for all the VLAN interfaces and either dynamic NAT for each interface or configure a dynamic NAT that matches all the interfaces (with the any keyword)
    object network obj_any
     nat (any,outside) dynamic interface

You don't delete a User account by dragging the User's folder to the trash.
Open System Preferences > Accounts (or Users and Groups I believe it is in Lion).
You cannot be logged in to the account you're deleting, and you must be logged in to an Admin account.
Click the padlock to unlock the pane, select the User in the list of accounts and click the - (minus) sign below the pane.
You'll be asked what to do with the users home folder - simply select delete and click OK.
No need to get yourself in a permissions pickle.

    Hey cnasmond,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are having issue relating to changing your iCloud account. The following articles may help to resolve your issue:
iOS 7: If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS5223
    3. Change your Apple ID temporarily
If signing out and back in to iMessage or FaceTime didn't work, try these steps:
    1. Change your Apple ID to the Apple ID you used previously. You shouldn't need to verify the email address.
    2. Tap Settings > iCloud and try to sign out.
    3. Change your Apple ID to the new email address that you want to use. You'll need to verify the email address.
    4. Tap Settings > iCloud and sign in with the new Apple ID.

  • File Permissions Problem - Multiple Network Users

My wife & I have a home office network setup for our business, and are having trouble with shared files over the network. We're both on Macs, and all of our client files reside on an internal hard drive in my Mac Pro. I've set her up as a "Sharing Only" user on my computer (which matches the username & password of her account on her iMac), and have properly setup file sharing in both the System Preferences, and in the directory itself that we want shared. I've also applied the permissions to all files & folders below the main folder, and she can view, open and save whatever she needs and it works great.
*Here's where the problem comes in...* If either of us create a NEW file or folder, the other person doesn't have WRITE access to it (we can browse and open it fine). The second I go to update a file she created, it won't let me over-write it, and I have to go into the permissions for that specific file and give myself Read/Write access. I've experimented with "Groups", and assigned both of us a special group, and applied that group access to that directory, but it doesn't make any difference when a NEW file or folder is created - it doesn't copy the parent directory permissions to itself, it makes one of us the owner, and nobody else has access.
Is there any way around this? We're both constantly creating new files, and it really hampers our workflow to have to keep re-applying file permissions every time one of us creates something new. Ideally, any new files created within that main client folder would automatically have the same permissions as the parent directory. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

you can keep those files on a separate partition on the hard drive and turn off ownership for that partition.
the only other way i know how to deal with this is using inherited ACLs.
run the following terminal command from your account on the mac pro.
    chmod -R +a "username allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" /path/to/shared/folder
put your short username instead of username in the above. also, instead of /path/to/shared/folder put the unix path to the folder you are sharing. you can get this path by dragging that folder to a terminal window.
repeat the command with your wife's username instead of yours.
warning: this will work with newly created files in the shared folder and with the files you COPY to that folder. it will not work with files that you MOVE to that folder.

  • How can I allow network users to use File Sharing on 10.8 Server?

I am in the process of setting up a new OS X 10.8 Server. I have exported/imported the network users from my previous OS X 10.6.8 Server using Workspace Manager. I have re-entered the passwords of the users. I have existing clients running (stil logged in).
I have set up the File Sharing service in Server.app. I have several mount points. I have made the Users mount point available for home directories over AFP.
Now, the system administrator can connect to the server and get access to the file shares. So the basic file sharing system works.
Also: the users on a client can get there password verified (e.g. when unlocking screen protection) by the server. It is just AFP they can't get access to, while the system administrator account (OD /Local on the server) can be used. So, the password in the server is OK too. It seems to be a matter of privileges.
But no network user (OD user in directory /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 on the server) can get access. Where can I give network users privileges for File Sharing on the server?
I did try to add either the "Open Directory Users" group or a specific user that was imported into com.apple.access_afp. If I do that, there is partial success. I can connect to the server from the client with a user account other than system administrator from the server (but connecting is slow). But Mobile Home Sync does not work:

    Hi Gerben,
Try creating a brand new user, that's not imported and see if that works. Every user/group has a little gear in the Server.app/Users or Groups which allows specific access to specific services, perhaps filesharing is off in that section?
Is your DNS setup properly? Can you verify that clients can see the FQDN of your server?
After setting up the Users folder for mobilehomes, did you check whether the group and the separate users have access to filesharing? I am able to select the correct homefolder /Users and restrict the homefolder size.
    Goodluck!
    Jeffrey
