Network using networks with Arris TG862G52 gateway

Been floating through discussion after discussion and I still did not have a concrete concept of the panoply of choices of establishing a wifi network using an Arris TG862G52 gateway through Time Warner.  Currently, living with my daughter and son-in-law in NH where Time Warner provides internet service.  Because speed was lethargic, I offered to pay for upgraded internet speed.  As a result, Time Warner provided an Arris TG862G52 gateway.  There is a new Time Capsule directly connected to one of the Arris ports.  The Arris wireless is disabled, so that a wifi network is established through the directly connected Time Capsule.  From this point, the wifi network has been extended through numerous devices included a second Time Capsule. an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express.  The connected Time Capsule appears to be the hub and the Bridge Mode is off.  All other devices serve to extend the network.  Therefore, their Bridge Modes are also off.
Not sure if I should enable the wireless through the Arris and reconfigure the network or leave well enough alone.  NAT is a new concept to me.  I did notice that any of the connected Apple devices give the wireless options of Bridge Mode Off, DHCP only, and DHCP and NAT.
Hey, I do not mind if you refer me to some literature, but I would appreciate a deeper understanding of cause and effects issues pertaining to enabling the Arris wifi or establishing the wifi (as it now is) with the Time Capsule.
Any help would be appreciated!  I'm not opposed to reading some long as there's some direction.

Your current setup is correct, according to traditional networking rules.
Ironically, if you call Apple Support, they will recommend that you configure the Time Capsule not in the traditional Bridge Mode setting......used when there is another gateway or router "upstream" on the network...... but as a second router providing DHCP and NAT service. If you do this, you now have a Double NAT error on the network, which Apple says you can "ignore".
You might want to follow up with Apple Support if you need more details on their controversial thinking.
As far as the Arris gateway is concerned, you could turn on the wireless service on the Arris gateway if you really needed another wireless network for guests or something like that.
When you have two devices both producing a network, it is good practice to separate them by 6-8 feet or a few meters to reduce the chances of wireless interference between them. So, if the Arris gateway is located close to the Time Capsule, try to separate the devices 6-8 feet or more.

  • How do I extend a network with an AirPort Extreme from an Arris TG862?

I'm using Comcast as my ISP, and after some issues with a previous Motorola modem, they supplied me with an Arris TG862 Router/Modem combo tower. I have two AirPort Extremes, one of which was previously connected to the old Motorola modem to send wireless into the house, but it only reached halfway, so I had the other AirPort Extreme in the middle of the house to "catch" the signal and then broadcast it out to the rest of the house. This worked fine for a while.
But with the new TG862, it doesn't seem to be an option. From what I've read, if I have the TG862 in one room (connected to the cable), AirPort Extreme #1 in the middle of the house, trying to join the existing network (or extend it?), and AirPort Extreme #2 in the far end of the house (to extend from AirPort #1), it won't work. Apple's "extension" technology isn't compatible with all other modems or routers, and even if it was, I'd have to somehow configure the TG862 to "allow to be extended."
So my question is, IF there is a desktop utilizing the TG862 as a direct connection (because it has no built-in Wi-Fi), is it possible to put the TG862 into bridge mode, connect one of the AirPort Extremes and have it act as the router so I can use AirPort Extreme #2 to extend that network out to the rest of the house? I want to ensure the desktop still has a connection, but there's Wi-Fi that actually goes out through the whole house.
The connected-to-the-cable-desktop is a PC; we have multiple iPhones, iPads, and anywhere from 1 Mac laptop to 1 iMac in the house at any given time.

Topic title pretty well sums up the question.
I have a TimeCapsule Base Station with two Expresses for extending the network through the house.
We're doing a 3 room addition, and there is not a convenient place to put an Express in a wall outlet in the middle room of the addition, but there's a perfect place to put an Extreme on top of a piece of furniture.
So, can the Extreme act as an "extender" only, in lieu of using an Express?
    Hiya.
You can absolutely extend a network with an Extreme. I've got a 5th gen. Extreme extending a network created with a 3rd gen. Time Capsule. On the Extreme, you'll have the option to allow (or not) WiFi clients. I recommend having all units updated to the current firmware (7.6.1 as of this writing). Note that extending doesn't work in daisy-chain fashion, meaning that your Expresses or Extremes will each connect to and extend from the TC. As such, you'll want the TC to be in as central a location as possible to offer the best coverage.

  • IP routing utilizing Verizon private network (GRE tunnel) with remote cellular gateways

Okay, I give up, and think I have done my due diligence (I have been engrossed and fascinated spending many more hours than allotted to try and learn some of the finer details).  Time for some advice.  My usual trade is controls engineering which generally require only basic knowledge of networking principals.  However I recently took a job to integrate 100 or so lift stations scattered around a county into a central SCADA system.  I decided to use cellular technology to connect these remote sites back to the main SCADA system.  Well the infrastructure is now in and it’s time to get these things talking.  Basic topology description is as follows:  Each remote site has an Airlink LS300 gateway.  Attached to the gateway via Ethernet is a system controller that I will be polling via Modbus TCP from the main SCADA system.  The Airlinks are provisioned by Verizon utilizing a private network with static IP's.  This private networks address is 192.168.1.0/24.  Back at the central office the SCADA computer is sitting behind a Cisco 2911.  The LAN address of the central office is 192.168.11.0/24.  The 2911 is utilizing GRE tunnels that terminate with Verizon.  The original turn up was done with another contractor that did a basic config of the router which you will find below.  As it stands now I am pretty confident the tunnels are up and working (if I change a local computers subnet to 255.255.0.0 I can surprisingly reach the airlinks in the field), but this is obviously not the right way to solve the problem, not to mention I was unable to successfully poll the end devices on the other side of the Airlinks.  I think I understand just about every part of the config below and think it is just missing a few items to be complete.  I would greatly appreciate anyone’s help in getting this set up correctly.  I also have a few questions about the set up that still don’t make sense to me, you will find them below the config.  Thanks in advance.

    ip route 192.168.1.0 255.255.0.0 22.20.19.19
That should allow my internal LAN to reach the Airlink gateways on the other side of the tunnel (I think)
Now for a couple of questions for those that are still actually hanging around.
#1 what is the purpose of the Ethernet address assigned to each tunnel?  I only see them being used in the BGP section where they are receiving routing tables from the Verizon side (is that correct?).  Why wouldn't or couldn't you just use the physical Ethernet address interface in its place (in the BGP section)?
#2 is the config above correct in pointing the default route to the physical Ethernet address?  Does that force the packets into the tunnel, or shouldn’t you be pointing it towards the tunnel IP's (172.16.200.2)?  If the config above is correct then I should not need to add the route I described above as if I ping out to 192.168.1.X that should catch it and force it into the tunnel where Verizon would pick it up and know how to get it to its destination??
#3 Will I need to add another permit to the VZW_VPN for TCP as in the end I need to be able to poll via Modbus which uses port 502 TCP.  Or is TCP implicit in some way with the GRE permit?
I actually have alot more questions, but I will keep reading for now.
I really appreciate the time you all took to trudge through this.  Also please feel free to point anything else out that I may have missed or that can be improved.  Have a great day!

  • [SOLVED] Tap Networking with QEMU, while Using WICD for Network

I would like to set up tap networking with my QEMU system. I note that according to
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/QEM … _with_QEMU
I am supposed to set up the network bridge to include my real adapter inside it. However, because I am using WICD, the actual adapter switches between eth0 and wlan0 depending on whether I am on ethernet or wifi. Does anyone know what my "bridge_br0=..." line in my /etc/rc.conf should look like to use either eth0 or wlan0? Thanks in advance for any help!

Okay...I've made some progress on this problem but I'm still missing something... I've taken the following steps so far...
    1. I installed uml_utilities, iproute2, and parprouted
    2. I added tun to the modules array of /etc/rc.conf and rebooted
    3. Before running Qemu, I run the following commands as root
        sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
tunctl -b -u (my user name)
        ifconfig tap0 up
ip addr add 192.168.1.108/24 dev tap0
        parprouted wlan0 tap0
    4. I start Qemu with qemu-kvm -boot c -m 512 -hda /home/tony/win_xp.img -net nic,macaddr=36:7B:36:F7:F0:6F -net tap,ifname=tap0,script=no,downscript=no -localtime -k en-us -soundhw ac97 -vga std -full-screen (that mac address is the mac address for tap0)
    5. In Qemu, running 64-bit Windows XP, I changed the TCP/IP properties to use the static IP 192.168.1.108, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.1.1, preferred DNS server 216.104.64.5, and alternate DNS server 216.104.72.5.
    6. After running Qemu, I shut down the interface running the following as root
        ifconfig tap0 down
        tunctl -d tap0 > /dev/null
        sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward=0
        pkill parprouted
However, I am still unable to see the outside network from the virtual system. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated...

  • How do i use my time capsule and extend the network with airport express

I have a new iMac and Time Capsule, how do i extend the network with airport express. My time capsule does have a guest net work, and logins and passwords? I am no computer person. So for me it would have to be spelled out.

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.
Apple doco is also good to read.

    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • How to use Airport Extreme to create a second wireless network with different IP addresses behind an existing modem/router?

    Hi,
I have an existing modem/router from my ISP that does DHCP and NAT with base IP 192.168.1.1 distributed in the wireless network. I use this wireless network for our private devices. I could turn off the DHCP server in this first router, but there isn't a separate setting to turn off NAT.
I want to connect my Airport Extreme (4th gen) to this existing router to create a separate wireless network for visiting guests, where IP addresses of 10.0.0.0 etc. are used. So I do not want to use the Airport Extreme in bridge mode, as I would like to keep the devices on the first network 'invisible' for those on the second network. (P.S. when connected in bridge mode, the Airport works well and can distribute a network with a different name from the first. It's just that I would feel more comfortable about our privacy if the Airport were to distribute a different IP range. False security, maybe?)
I've tried doing this by 'Sharing a public IP address' in Airport Utility's Internet tab, leaving TCP/IP's setting to 'via DHCP', setting DHCP addresses to start with 10.0.0.2 up to 200 with all else blank, and not using a standard host nor NAT-PMP in the NAT tab.
When I do this the Airport complains of a 'double NAT issue'. Internet connectivity seems to be OK, but when switching between the two networks on my Mac I get complaints about my IP address being in use by another device intermittently.
Can anyone help in how to get the 'double NAT issue' resolved?
    Thanks!

So if someone is connected to the modem/router network they will be able to see the HD I will have put in to the AirPort Extreme?
As I said above.....since the modem/router and AirPort are bridged, devices on the modem/router wireless will be able to "see" devices on the AirPort wireless, and vice versa.....
If they can see the HD connected to the AirPort Extreme, will they be able to access it
Yes, unless you plan to password protect the drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.
or will they still need the password needed to get onto the AirPort Extreme network?
The modem/router and AirPort Extreme are bridged. They are on the same network. All devices are on the same network when the modem/router and AirPort are bridged. Not sure how else that I can say this.
Also, because it is bridged, I shouldn't have any problems accessing the HD I will have connected to the AirPort Extreme from an external location?
Accessing devices from a remote location is never easy....and a topic for a different post/discussion. If you have a "static" Internet IP address from your provider, and have all the details on how to forward ports on your modem/router, you are off to a good start.
Apparently there is some addressing issues because devices can be seen as "Double IP" because the modem/router would have allocated IP's as well as the AirPort allocating IP's thus making connections slower until resolved
When you "bridge", all IP addresses are issued by one device. There will be no conflicts on the network, since they are bridged.
Once again, in very simple terms, you have two doors (access points) that open into the same room (network).  One "door" is the modem/router and the other "door" is the AirPort Extreme. They are on the same network....("room") because they are bridged.

  • HT201335 Can i use airplay with the apple tv and airport express without an internet connection? Basically Set it up as a closed network?

I was told I could set a local network with the airport express, apple Tv, and my iPad to stream videos or pictures to a TV for a presentation.
No internet connection is available at the location.
Is that possible? Or do I need to access itunes homeshare with an internet connection to make this work?
I've set it up at home where I have an internet connection and it works fine but I want to move the setup to my church for a class. The data I'm using is stored on my ipad.
I know I can do this wired with the HDMI adapter but would like to do it wireless.
    Thanks for any help!

Ok so we now have a solution to the problem.   A friend of mine came round to work this out with me last night and we were able to get it working, but it is not as easy as I had hoped.  Fisrtly we plugged the airport express into my router using the ethernet cable  (for this I am using an Airport Express Base Station") and in airport utilities selected the airport express.  In edit, we then gave the airport express a new range of IP address which did not conflict with any of the other applications that I have already assigned.  We also named the Airport Express with a distinguishable name.  We then waited for the changes to be registered then unplugged the Airport Express from the router.  I then plugged my AppleTV via HDMI into a tv to test it and selected the new wifi network with the new Airport Express distinguishable name.  I was able to watch a video that I have on my ipad directly on my tv without being connected to the internet, and was able to play Airplay presentations.
No the easiest solution, and certainly not something that anyone at Apple has talked me through in my lengthy conversations with them at Applecare.
    Hope this helps.

The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

  • 10.6 breaks resourceforks when used in a (Windows) network with 10.5.8 (?!)

Does this only happen to me ?
a file: filename.txt, which has a resource-fork when copied to a remote windows share (using ntfs filesystem) will not produce a "._filename.txt". However, the resource fork is preserved.
But, when you access this file using a 10.5.x or earlier client, it does not see the resource fork.
The other way around, the same problem appears.
    To check this:
try this using a terminal on 10.6:
    Create the file:
    echo "1234567890" >test.txt
    echo "theresourcefork" >test.txt/rsrc
check if the resource fork is ok:
    cat test.txt/rsrc
    result: theresourcefork
copy the file to the remote share ( in my case: windows 2k3 server) using smb protocol
    rename the file to "test1.txt"
copy back to your Mac on 10.6
again check if the resource fork is there:
    cat test1.txt/rsrc
    result: theresourcefork
Now, go to your 10.5.x Machine
copy test1.txt from the network share to your computer.
check if the resource fork is there:
    cat test1.txt/rsrc
    result: (empty)
while it is nice, that 10.6 probably uses ntfs streams to preserve the resource fork ( a much smarter behaviour as before with the "._xyz" files), It completely breaks your data if some of it relies on resource forks and you use 10.6 together with older MacOS versions.
The best case is that you cannot open your documents any more on 10.5 or 10.6. All other cases are worse.
Apple should have built in a fallback compatibility or, should have printed a sticker on the CD.
WARNING: Do not use together with earlier versions of the OS in a Windows network !
I have this rather strange behaviour on 2 Machines, but have not checked if other installations have the same problem. But, I did not find anyhting here when I search for "resource AND fork".
Can anyone else try this out if the behaviour is really that destructive ?

    Followup:
indeed, 10.6 uses ntfs streams when availible to store metadata.
    for a workaround:
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/m an5/nsmb.conf.5.html
    create
    /etc/nsmb.conf
    contents:
    \[default\]
    streams=no
    close all server connections, reconnect.

  • How do I change SSID setting? Getting message "using network with default ssid'

Getting message "using network with default ssid'

First, let's address the biggest issue, the version of Firefox you are using is extremely old, out of date and insecure. Please update to Firefox 33 ASAP ([[Update Firefox to the latest version]])
After that, please give a bit more context on what exactly is going on. Keep in mind this is a Firefox support forum, we can't help you with Windows settings or setting up wireless networks.

  • Can I use the Ethernet Port for a computer when it is also used as a wireless network with an Airport Extreme as the access point for the wireless network

Can I use the Ethernet Port  of the A1264 Airport Express to connect to the Ethernet port of a computer that does not have wireless capability when the Airport Express is also used on a wireless network with an Airport Extreme 5th generation as the access point for the network?
    I have AE 5th gen
looking to buy (from ebay) the AEX A1264
Various computers, printers and hubs for the network
    Is this possible to do?

Bob, Thanks for the info. I have read different articles that said yes, but I wanted to make sure before I commit to buy. I have an older A1084 which I could not use the Ethernet port. I know at one point I was able to when I was on 10.4. Now that I am on an Intel processor and 10.8 I am going to have to upgrade some of my Apple wireless hardware.
    Thanks Again.

  • Using ISP network with multiple private spans in a bridged/LAN manner?

Dear all - this is a bit a of concept question. But it seems an obvious and generic requirement - but I can't find a nice, neat and simple solution? Or maybe I can't see the forest for the trees? Help/pointers would be appreciated - the first bit is the connectivity, I'll worry about the security issues once this has been put to bed.
I need a WAN/LAN network with 30 plus nodes. My IPS will supply a nice fibre internet connection per node with fixed public IP's, each node has a /28 span (5 usable Public IPs) - so I have the foundation for an 'any to any' network (which I need) via these public IPs. I now need to expand the IP host connectivity behind the ISP supplied CPE. This expansions needs to be a set of private networks (say) 192.168.x.0/24 - with x being 1 to 30. - But I still need the 'any to any' connectivity.
A (rather poor) ascii picture of what I need:
    '                                                                   |          Internet         |
    192.168.1.100/24 <---->ISP CPE/28 <-------> |                               |
    192.168.2.100/24 <---->ISP CPE/28 <-------> |                               |
    Etc up 'till 192.168.30.100/24                        |                               |
                                                                        |_________________|
The Internet becomes no more than a 30 port switch - with any 192.168.x.y being able to ping any other 192.168.x.y node
    Any takers?

    Hello,
Just to make sure I have it correctly, you have several sites each with their own public addresses, which then have a private address range network behind them, and they need to all be able to communicate?
If so the solution would be site-to-site VPN tunnels.  That way each client could communicate with every other client using the private addresses, and all of the traffic going out over the ISPs public network would be encrypted.  This would involve a lot of tunnels so you would need a pretty beefy router, but that should give you what you are looking for.
Hope I understood it correctly and this helps,
