Network Vaults and Mirrored Drives

I just updated my server with a mirrored (Raid 1) drive and I was looking forward to putting an Aperture vault on the drive. Of course Aperture doesn't support network drives for vaults (yes, yes, I should have checked first...)
anyone out there find an alternative workflow that works for them. I still like the idea (and redundant) network drives backing up my pictures.
thx!
Dual G5, 15" MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi (I also from Seattle),
I also have a mirrored network drive. At the time I put Aperture 1.0 on my Quad G5, I couldn't put the Library on the network account, nor a vault. Now, I think I can at least use referenced files on the network account...but I choose not to. I don't know if the managed library can reside on the network drive. I don't think it can.
Regardless, the Library on the RAID might be nice in case of drive failure, but for the vault, I wouldn't trust it. If the library is corrupted, or files get deleted, I instantly replicate the error to the mirrored drive. Same for the vaults.
So instead, I have a pair of backups (Vaults) that I rotate off-site. I intend on having a third. It's easy, and fast. I don't keep the vaults connected all the time--I've had bad luck with drive failure in the past, so I take them online only for the task. Like I said, it's quick and easy. I have a 140 GB Library. The vault updates take a few minutes each time. I vault the library every time I add new images or make substantial changes.
Having tried a variety of ways of backing up, I'm really pleased with what Apple's come up with so far. Of course for those who need a network workflow, there's much to be desired...
BTW, I run my laptop with a Portable Home Directory. Of course, it can't run Aperture. If it did, I'd be exporting the projects I needed to work on to my home directory, and then it would be synched to the Laptop and back.

  • My wifi wasn't working for more than 10 minutes at a time after updating to IOS8 and resetting network settings. I turned off google drive, turned off Bluetooth, reset network settings and rebooted my iPad4. So far so good.

I have an ipad4.  Wifi keeps cutting out after the upgrade even after I forget the network and resign on or reset all network settings. I deleted iCloud drive from my iPad, turned off Bluetooth, reset network settings, and rebooted my iPad. Since I upgraded to IOS8 this is the longest wifi has consistently been working for me. Which is approximately an hour now. Anyone else find that this worked or have figured out if this or anything out there is a permanent fix?

    Hi CollinGCC78,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If you are still having issues, you may want to double-check the steps outlined in the following article, in order if possible (apologies for replicating any steps you have already taken):

  • Different Drive Structure Between Principal and Mirror

We havea 2-node (active/active) cluster with four failover instances installed. We use a dedicated drive for data files, one for log files and one for tempdb per instance .Predicting that we will be adding more instances in the future, we realized that we
would run out of drive letters to set up. We intend to switch over and use mounted volumes instead that way we only use 1 drive letter per instance and will be able to add many more failover instances in the future. However, seen as we have over 150 databases
across all current instances, reconfiguring the cluster drive setup will require a lot of time and work and is not in the immediate plans for our team (me :( ). I need to mirror as many databases as possible, based on priority, to a DR server on a geographically
remote location. Since this server isn't setup with SQLServer yet, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have the DR server set up with mount volumes now and establish mirroring between our production environment and the DR server that way so that
at least half the battle is won. I am aware that the best practice for mirroring is to have the same drive structure between the principal and mirror server, however it is not a requirement. The only example issue I have seen with this set up is when you add
a data file to a database and the DDL statements get sent over to the mirror and will fail since the drive setup will not be the same. This is something I am willing to deal with since adding data files to our databases is not something we do often, or at
all. As new databases are added and mirrored, the WITH MOVE clause of the RESTORE statement can be used to place the files in their correct location in the mirror server.
Other than this, are there any other things to consider for this kind of mirroring set up?
    Leroy G. Brown

    Hi Leroy G,
According to my knowledge, you can deploy database mirroring with different drive structure. And the known issue is that if you add a file to the Principal, the DDL commands get applied across the Mirror, then your database will go into a suspended
status until you duplicate the path on the mirror.
However, as your post, you can use WITH MOVE option to create database on Mirror server. For more details, please follow the steps in this
    blog.
Meanwhile, about setting up database mirroring, I recommend you review this online
    article.

  • How to stripe and mirror 4 drives on my Mac

I have a Mac Pro. 4 internal 2TB SATA drives. I've already striped two drives as one array. I then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my boot drive to the striped array. It boots up and works fine (with a BIG increase in disk speed). I've striped the other 2 drives as one array. Disk Utility doesn't seem to allow me to Mirror the first array to the second array (RAID 0 + 1).
Am I missing something here? Or do I need to buy a 3rd party app (like SoftRAID 4)?
    thanks

Well this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24359 seems to explain how to us disk utility to make a raid that's a mirror set of two striped drive or stripe two sets of mirrored drives. I've always used raid utility to make my hardware raids.
While the article doesn't specify call out if creating a raid will destroy all data on your current raid; it seems implied; so I would suggest backing up the raid to an external drive before trying to create your 0 + 1 raid.
let me know how it turns out.

  • Networking a firewire hard drive from a Mac and access the drive from a PC

I'm trying to network a firewire hard drive from my Mac and access that hard drive from a Windows XP PC. I can see the main internal hard drive but I cannot see the firewire hard drive. Does anybody have a solution or work around?
    Many thanks,
    Roy

Thanks SO MUCH! Not only does it work, BUT IT IS FREE!!!!
See, I have two firewire (external) HDs, connected to a Mac, connected to a PC, connected to a USB external HD... now I can share files from the USB HD to the firewire HDs!
    Gotta love technology!

search your laptop for the Toshiba application installer, open it and use it to install your Wireles lan driver.
The application installer is easier than guessing which one you need from your support page.
    OR
Your support page is here - http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1200008391
You can select the drivers tab then down the page on the left hand side select Windows 8.1 64 bit to narrow down the drivers for your operating system. Then also select Wifi and the available drivers will be displayed.
If you are getting a corrupted system after a reset your hard drive may be failing or your recovery partition may have been corrupted .  Create your recovery media if you have not done so already.

  • XServe and Mirrored RAID drives

I wonder if anyone can help me. An XServe of ours went down. It looks like it is the Logicboard. I have taken the system drive out and put it into a G5 machine and the OS opens fine. I took one of the RAID drives which were mirrored and put it into the second slot in the G5. The problem is that the drive did not have any of the files for the last 6 months. Then I removed that drive and put in the other RAID mirrored drive, and this drive had all the files on. I am a bit confused. If the drives were mirrored shouldn't the drives both have the same content on? Also if I change any of the files on that RAID mirrored drive will that affect the way the RAID is set up when I put the drives back in the XServe when my logicboard gets replaced?

Does that mean that RAID mirrored drives don't necessarily have the same files on? What is the point of calling it mirrored then. Also this makes no sense. Because isn't the point that if the one drive fails, you have an exact mirror of the drive to recover your files. How does this help, if a drive fails, and the other mirrored drive is missing files from the last 4 months. Luckily we have external drives connected to the XServe which daily backup the RAID drives on the XServe. But imagine if you didnt have this, and one of the drives failed.
If I had to reformatt the drives and then reinstall the data, would this possibly correct the weird issue with the RAID drives not being exactly mirrored?

  • Fit and usage problems with second DVD burner on Mirror Drive Door

I got a Mirror Drive Door Dual 1.25 GHz (Firewire 400 only) to replace my dead Digital Audio model. It has been working fine for the past week, so today I was trying to transplant all my compatible upgrades over from the Digital Audio, but I am having problems with using 2 DVD burners.
I left the original Apple Super Drive in the top optical bay and put my LaCie Lightscribe burner in the bottom bay.
My first problem is that the opening in the lower bezel is too small from side-to-side for the LaCie tray to come out. It hits the bezel and goes back in. It looks like it is off by about 1-1.5mm on each side. I don't know if the drives will fit if I reverse their positions or not.
Secondly, I don't think the jumpers are set correctly, and I am not 100% sure how to set them. I am guessing that they both need to be "Cable Select" like the hard disks in this model? I think I would prefer that the Apple drive stays the main drive. Right now, when I press the eject button on the keyboard, all I get is an endless cycle of the lower drive trying to eject its tray. I'm not finding the procedure for ejecting the the top Apple drive. Is there a key combination to select the upper drive? So far there is only Tiger 10.4.11 on this computer, though I will be installing Leopard shortly.

I am guessing that they both need to be "Cable Select" like the hard disks in this model?
Depends on the IDE cable, Master & Slave may be a better option.
    Might try this...
On your main hard drive, dig down into System > Library > CoreServices > Menu Extras. Inside that window, double-click on the icon called Eject.menu.

If two drives are properly recognized it'll allow you to choose which one.

  • Why does vault say iCloud Drive has insufficient space when there is plenty available?

I have 49.7GB of Aperture photo data that I want to back up to a Vault. I am running Yosemite and recently upgraded my iCloud drive to 200GB with only 13.7GB currently being used. When I set up a Vault using the iCloud drive it says I have insufficient space. Clearly I don't!
My iCloud account confirms that the space is available. Any suggestions please?

An Aperture vault cannot be stored in iCloud drive. If you put it on a synced volume it will be corrupted by syncing.  Write your vault to a locally connected disk like described here for Aperture Libraries:
Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
A vault is essentially an Aperture library, so the same holds.   I tested putting Aperture libraries, vaults, and iPhoto Libraries onto iCloud Drive. After the first sync they needed repairing.
. When I set up a Vault using the iCloud drive it says I have insufficient space. Clearly I don't!
How much free space is on your Mac?  You can only write files to iCloud Drive that will fit on all devices that are connected to iCloud Drive. iCloud Drive is not like an external disk - it is a shared storage for syncing your Macs. Everything you are writing to iCloud Drive will be mirrored to your Macs. See:  iCloud Drive FAQ

  • How do I get my Mirror Drive Door G4 to start up in 9.2.2? Retail disk doesn't work.

So my boss came in with a Mirror Drive Door G4 running 10.3.x and told me to get OS9 running on it. "Piece of cake," I told him.
Just as the curmudgeon at the used PC store assured me, my retail copy of OS9 will NOT install onto it. One MUST use the restore disks specific to this machine, he said. Seemed counter-intuitive, that a retail copy of OS9 somebody had paid for would not install 9 onto a mac that can run 9. But he was right. So I bought CDR copies of the restore disks that came with the MDD. Whether these pertain to the exact MDD I'm using is another question.
After much headache, I was able to get run the OS9 system restore package cuncluded by a window that reported success. The startup disk preference window in OSX could see the 9.2.2 system folder. I selected it and restarted. It tried, but then stopped, made another unreasonably loud JONG noise and presented me with a flashing "no OS folder" icon. I was only able to start back up using a 10.3 install disk to select the 10.3 system folder on the HD.
This machine is able to start up in OS9 if I install an old HD from my ancient snow iMac into it. What's that about? It can start up using that non-MDD-specific system folder but not the one specific to this machine?
The drive I'm having trouble starting up from was erased with OS9 drivers installed before 10.3 was installed, followed by 9.2.2 from the restore disks.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks folks.

    Yes, there is.
OS 9 can not boot when installed on a volume larger than 200GB.
The good news is that this is a volume size limitation, not a drive size limitation. This means that you can partition a drive larger than 200GB such that the volume used for OS 9 booting is not larger than 200GB; to allow for formatting wiggle room, using a max volume size of about 190GB is safer.
When reforatting the drive, remember to make sure tha OS 9 drivers are installed.

  • Losing network connection and NIC acts weird from warm/hot weather/temperatures?

    Hello.
Is there a known issue on MSI P43 NEO3-F (MSI-7514) motherboards' onboard RealTek RTL8168C (P)/8111C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC network disconnecting and acting weird during warm/hot weather?
I noticed lately and back on 1/11/2009 night when weather got warm/hot (e.g., my room can get over 85F degrees, but lately it has been 80F degrees), my network would lose its connection. See http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5580/screenshots.gif for a few SpeedFan's sensor readings when the incidents occurred. I have never seen this happen when the weather is cooler (60-70F degrees in my room).
I also think this only happens if I am using the PC lightly (nothing intensive) like watching fullscreen videos (video overlay), surfing the Web, etc. I don't see any errors or evidences that it happens when idled (e.g., asleep or out). Uptime doesn't seem to matter since I have seen days to 3.5 hours.
I tried upgrading network driver twice (e.g., Realtek_XP_5714_0219 from
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false ...), disabling Kerio Personal Firewall v2.1.5 (XP's disabled already), releasing and renewing IP address (works, but still no network -- can't even ping my router!), unplugging and replugging the cat5 cable (do see the network port lights on), touching the network jack and hardware inside and outside of the case (not hot), trying another cat5 cable and a network port on a switch instead router's), changing from "Minimal Power Management" to full power (no underclocking/slowing down when idled), etc.
    During the disconnections, I tried:

I also noticed the disconnections usually start with red X icon in my taskbar with its bubble and then later the long disconnection even though no red X (1 GB and connected). If I were to disconnect the cat5 cable from NIC, then it wouldn't even detect it is missing the cable!
The only way to fix this was to reboot (best way and last longer) OR disable network connection and re-enable it (Windows XP's Network Connections) or the NIC itself (Device Manager), but that doesn't always last long (maybe a minute). Example of my pings right after disabling and re-enabling NIC:
    C:\>ping 192.168.0.1 -t
Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Force your NIC to run at 100Mbps full duplex and see how it goes.
Check your router / switch ports as well as cables.
I will try 100 Mbps if it happens again. So far, it hasn't occurred after installing the driver supplied by MSI's Web site and not RealTek's Web site. The room temperatures even got warmer like 83F degrees.
As for router and switch, what am I checking for? Other computers didn't have any problems. As for cat5 cables, I already tried another one like I said in my original post.

  • Retrieving data from a mirrored drive

    Hello,
Can anyone advise how to retrieve/access the data on a mirrored drive? Both the primary drive and the mirrored drive do not load onto the desktop, and in Disk Utility only the mirrored drive shows up in the list of drives, unhighlighted. The only option given in Disk Utility is to delete drive, or "other options", which does not really offer any options.
The drives are definitely mirrored. It is a 10 terabyte system, with 5 separate drives mirroring the other 5. The files are not split between the drives. The primary drive not mounting is the one with all the media on it. The media is totally off-line in Final Cut Pro, so the mirrored drive is not automatically backing up the data/media.
How do I access that media on the mirrored drive?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Without actually knowing what the actual arrays are I can't tell you. I'm still not clear whether there are two striped arrays mirroring one another or five separate drives in each enclosure with one drive mirrored to another in the other enclosure or if you have ten drives with ever other pair in a mirrored RAID or something altogether different. I don't even know if these RAIS (whatever they are) were set up using Disk Utility or some other hardware or software.
Let's assume for the sake of argument that there are two boxes - A and B - each with five drives. Box A consists of drives A1, A2, A3, A4, and A5 while Box B has drives B1, B2, B3, B4, and B5. I can conceive of some basic configurations:
    1. Drives A1-A5 are configured as a striped RAID and drives B1-B5 as an identical striped RAID. Box A and Box B are configured in a mirrored RAID.
    2. Drives A1 and B1, A2 and B2, A3 and B3, A4 and B4, and A5 and B5 are each configured as mirrored RAIS.
    3. A1 and A2 are mirrored, A3 and A4 are mirrored, A5 and B1 are mirrored, B2 and B3 and B4 and B5 are each mirrored.
With the first configuration your data will be lost if one drive goes bad in one of the striped arrays, but may be intact on the mirrored array. The RAID software will need to be used to first "break" the mirrored RAID but leave the striped arrays alone.
In the second configuration use the RAID software to "break" the mirrored RAID with the bad drive. The data should be intact on the other drive used in the mirrored array.
In the third setup you would do the same as in the second, but just have different drives involved.

  • DataBase unavailable and Mirrored Db role has chnaged.

    Hello All,
We got below errors in our principal and Mirror db servers.
    1) The mirroring connection to "TCP://servername.domain.com:5022" has timed out for database "Db name" after 10 seconds without a response.  Check the service and network connections.(Mirror Server).
    2) Database mirroring is inactive for database 'DB Name'. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.(Pricipal)
    2) The command failed because the database mirror is busy. Reissue the command later. .(Pricipal)
    3) The mirrored database "Db" is changing roles from "PRINCIPAL" to "MIRROR" because the mirroring session or availability group failed over due to role synchronization. This is an informational message only. No user action
    is required. .(Pricipal)
Before the first error we got an alert that db is unavailable. After 1 min of this alert the issue has started.
After a successful fail-over of that particular db to mirror again it was rolled back to principle automatically. After that I can see a server shut down with below errors.and mirroring failed on all the dbs.
Database mirroring connection error 4 'The connection was closed by the remote end, or an error occurred while receiving data: 55(The specified network name is no longer available.)'' for 'TCP://Server Name.Domain.com:5022'.(Mirror)
Database mirroring connection error 4 'An error occurred while receiving data: '1054(An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)'.' 'TCP://Server Name.Domain.com:5022'. .(Mirror)
SQL Server is terminating because of a system shutdown. This is an informational message only. No user action is required. (Pricipal)
The connection has been lost with Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC). Recovery of any in-doubt distributed transactions involving Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) will begin once the connection is re-established.
This is an informational message only. No user action is required. (Pricipal)
SQL Server cannot accept new connections, because it is shutting down. The connection has been closed. [CLIENT: IP. (Pricipal)
I am very confused that why this db unavailable before the issue. I don’t have any information about this.
Can some body help me to find out the root cause why this unexpected fail over and
     sql shutdown.

    Hello,
It looks like something was updated or done to the end system as:
'An error occurred while receiving data: '1054(An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)'
Is generally caused by a firewall. Please double check software and hardware firewalls (including endpoint protection software) and make sure the exceptions for port 5022 tcp exist.

  • Recovery Partition mandatory for File Vault and unencrypted TM Backup?

I recently had to setup my Macbook Pro from scratch meaning erasing the whole disk and start from there.
The update to Lion took already place a while ago and I had File Vault active. After making a last backup using
TM I erased the disk and all partitions including Recovery partition and used the Leopard system DVD to boot
    the machine.
From there I used the restore function to restore my TM backup to the MacBook. However, as the drive was
not partioned and not formated, I had to do this manually. Apparently, the recovery process via TM does not include
that. After system recovery, I booted from the Macbook and all apps and configuration seemed ok.
I was a little surprised to see that I was able to do this recovery without being asked for ID and password of the user's File Vault access
or the File Vault recovery key. All I needed was the TM ID and password (which is different from the owners ID and password)
I am not sure if this is supposed to work like this but I looks rather easy to gain access to application an data of another user if that
    is all it takes?
Now booting Lion again, I checked File Vault and noticed it was disabled although it was enabled for quite a while and long time
before I took the latest backup. I could not turn it on, after providing a recovery key and asking me wether I wanted to write it down
or safe it with Apple which I declined I wanted to reboot the notebook to start encryption but stopped saying my partition or volume
would not support File Vault. This was GUID and MacOS Extended Journal partition and volume which to my knowledge would
certainly support File Vault. In fact this is basically what I had before when File Vault was turned on and running.
I called Apple support a few times. The second agent told me that it does not work because there is not recovery partition on my
system but there was when I took the latest backup and I do have other means to get the recovery screen. Anyway it seems that
File Vault required a local Recovery partition and I was wondering if anyone can tell me why this dependency exist. If I write down the
recovery key, why would I need it to be stored on my disk as well?
Also, if anyone has an idea if there is a way of creating a local recovery partition without having to go through the lenghty process of installing
Leopard then upgrade to Lion and install all the apps and configure the OS again, would be great? I assume when I am back on Lion and use the TM
backup for recovery, I probably end up with having the Recovery partition deleted and start from scratch again.
I am a little concerned about the fact that it seems so easy to gain access to a protected backup and that the TM restore process does not include
restoring partition and volumes as well. Who knows how many other dependencies exist and users have to reinstall their system again after recovery.
I was following the recovery instruction of Apple but perhaps someone knows a better way to do this?

Just an update, I went ahead and installed Lion again over the existing TM restored installation using the Lion Update file and at least File Vault is working. Interestingly, I still do not have a Recover partition so obviously something new for Apple Support to learn.
