Network Volume adding Numbers and centralized libraries

Hello,
I would like to know what determines the numerical suffix to the network mount points. Currently I have a mac mini sharing my family iphoto library and music that two macbook pro's connect to. Currently my issue is in using iphoto library manager, it says to mount network volume before opening the iphoto library, but for some reason the library volume keeps changing.
Sometimes I'll login and it'll just be Pictures, next time it'll be Pictures-1, Pictures-2, etc.
The same thing happens when I use Time Machine shared disks, etc.
When I login through Finder, everything is ok, but I don't like having to always go into settings and re-find libraries for photos/media/etc.
This leads me to ask a few questions...
1) Is there any way to ensure that the volume names always stay the same?
2) I am looking to at some point implement Snow Leopard Server, and I need to know that if I have shared volumes over the server, that this won't happen. Specifically, I'll be logging into the server from different countries and I can't imagine having to constantly remotely manage it to fix volume names.
Currently, all of these drives that are showing as numbered suffixes are network drives (time capsule/NAS/Mac Mini shares over Wifi) so I'm trying to figure out what the underlying problem is so that I can minimize/eliminate it.
This is very frustrating for me as this is my first Mac setup and I jumped in headfirst with the whole family system, but I've spent years managing networks on PCs and I've never encountered this problem. I am trying to centralize our home network like I've done at other locations but before I invest further, I want to know that these little annoyances won't be a hinderance.
Thanks!!

I'm having the exact same issue, which breaks all my references to the volume. I have to update the path to include the new number <volumename>-5 currently. The problem happens when I do a restart, or loose network connection for other reasons. I happens on my desktop (Mac Pro) and my laptop (MacBook Pro) when mounting to my Tiger Server (PowerMac G5). It is extremely frustrating and makes code development a pain in the butt when I use my server for file storage.

  • Curiosity - Network Volume Version Numbers

When my computers loose connectivity to network drives, the next time they connect a version number is appended to the volume name (only seen in some locations - such as alias "Original:" path (Get Info) and in some applications). While not USUALLY a problem, I have had issues with Backup not finding my Time Capsule Disk apparently because of a "change" in volume name (yes, I am using Time Machine but I also have a need for Backup). I have two Time Capsules, one with the volume "<volumename>-43" and the other "<volumename>-20", that I'm assuming have lost connectivity 43 and 20 times respectively.
Is it possible to "reset" these version numbers - or better yet, keep them from happening in the first place?

  • InDesign CS5 hangs when conecting to network volume

Not sure if this is an InDesign issue or Mavericks problem, so I’ve posted here and there.
This problem only happens with InDesign if I have our file server connected (a share point on another mac running 10.5.8). If it is unmounted all works as it should.
Setup: Mid 2010 Mac Mini 2.4 Core 2 Duo with 8gb ram
    I have:
    Trashed various InDesign pref files
Reinstalled mavericks via the recovery partition and it’s on 10.9.4 with everything updated
Uninstalled InDesign using their own uninstaller - checked the included all prefs option
Reinstalled InDesign and updated it to 7.0.4 (CS5)
I then Repaired Permissions and ran maintenance scripts too.
    Restarted
    ... still have the issue.
This is what happens if the network volume is mounted and I’m connect (as Guest):
    InDesign will load
I can create a new blank .indd and save it
I can open that blank .indd
I can open that blank .indd if it includes just text
I can open that blank .indd if it includes just text and images (not located on the network volume)
If I open that blank .indd and it includes images that a located on the network volume or any pre-existing .indd which have images from the network volume InDesign hangs once the open dialogue box closes, after a force quite an .idlk file is left behind in the finder.
If I place/insert an image, the Place dialogue box opens and I can access the desktop & the documents folder via the sidebar and place/insert images from there into the document. But InDesign will hang if I select the Users Home folder,  the Dropbox folder or any folder from the file server.
As I said this only happens in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop can open files from the network volume to their hearts content without issue.
    Console log:
When I open the open or save dialogue in InDesign I get the following looped in the console – it will only stop looping those lines once I quite InDesign.

Clearly InDesign does not like the network volume attached or there is some sort of permissions problem going on, I have no idea why this is happening, other machines running Mavericks and InDesign 7.0.4 have no issues.

Upgrading to osX Yosemite seems to have solved this issue

  • Ghost network volume

I have a "ghost" duplicate version of one of our network volumes. It appeared one day when I was working on a file in Illustrator. The network volume "unexpectedly disconnected" and left a dummy folder under
    MyComputerName/Mac HD/Volumes/FILE_SERVER/...path to file
This randomly shows up when I'm trying to access the real FILE_SERVER through a program, i.e. saving a file. I can't seem to see it in a finder window. How can I get rid of it?

  • Network drive and iTunes libraries

I added a NAS and successfully relocated my iTunes library to it. I purchased a few songs and verified that they were being saved to the NAS rather than my local drive. I then dragged some iPhone video clips from iPhoto into the home movies tab of iTunes as well as purchased some additional content only to find that it has reverted to storing new things back to my local drive. I went back to preferences, changed the media folder location back to the network drive.
My question is, iTunes now looks to 2 libraries, how can I merge the two?

the link above (CCC FAQ) says:
*Can I back up directly to an AFP or SMB network file share? How about to a Time Capsule?*
CCC can back up directly to an HFS+ formatted local volume, or to a disk image on any writable network volume. CCC cannot, however, backup directly to a network filesystem (e.g. AFP, SMB, CIFS, NAS, Airport Extreme "Airdisk", or Time Capsule). There are significant technical limitations to backing up an HFS+ filesystem to a non-HFS+ filesystem -- most notably preservation of ownership and permission information -- that would make it impossible to create a faithful, bootable, non-proprietary backup of your data. Therefore I recommend and support backing up only to a disk image on non-HFS+ filesystems.

Thank u for reporting that. Looks like the only option is going "old style": attach the drive directly to the mac and make a copy and paste of the data on the TC capsule drive. Thanks again.

The short and direct answer to your question about catalogs on a network drive is that you can't do that. The catalog must reside on a local drive.

  • Name and extension network volume - problem

    Hi all,
I am 10.7.5 and when I get my network volumes the system I added an extension to the volume name!
    example:
    volume name: Music
    in name and extension: Music-2
    Why am I adding -2??
and how to no longer be
    Thank you for your help

All updates are installed regularly, so I am indeed at the newest version of all available software. I just haven't updated my signature here.
And the name of the attachment is mangled only when I use the client to send an attachment to any other Gmail account ( both Windows or Mac, accessed either through a client or directly at the receiving end). The same email cc'd to my school address shows the entire file name. And if I send the email through Gmail directly, then it is fine too, as I mentioned.

Use an Airport Express. Configure the AEBS to allow it's wireless network to be extended. This is a dropdown menu option under the Wireless tab. Configure the Airport Express to Extend an Existing Network also under it's Wireless tab. You will need to provide the name of your network used in the AEBS as well as the network's access password.

  • Need help adding numbers to PDF drawing and more

I'm not an Adobe superuser so hopefully this isn't a stupid question. I receive drawings in PDF from my clients. The drawings look like Autocad and are pictures of parts with dimensions that I build for them. I number all the dimensions on the PDF drawing from 1 to whatever. I then create a spreadsheet with the numbers and the corresponding dimension plus other info. Currently I print the PDF then with a pen I manually number each dimension. Then I manually enter the dimension and special symbols in my spreadsheet. Ideally I'm trying to find a way to just click and have it enter a 1 then click and have it enter a 2 etc. If that's not possible then what's the easiest way to just click and allow me to type 1 then click and I type 2 etc.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

I think what you actually need is a dynamic stamp. Try searching these forums and also acrobatusers.com . There's a lot of information about it.

  • Cannot use Network Volumes 10.1.1

After fighting with iMovie 11 to allow network volumes, Apple release another equally awkward and annoying piece of software to match the same issues!!!
We are a school and simply cannot allow students to save such large files to their personal home directories or to the local hard drive.
SO WHY IS IT YOU CANNOT CREATE A NEW PROJECT ON A NETWORK VOLUME?!
We currently have a hard drive attached to the server which students use to save their work.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks

In a networked environment, the best way to work is often to use external media.
Import the media to the network drive, create the libraries in the local drive, and do not copy the media.

  • Seeing Network volume icon in Dock??  How to?

I used to store shortcuts to all my networked volumes in my doc. They were easy to identify because each one had a distinct icon. Now with Stacks, I have 5 lumps of jumbled files. How am I supposed to tell which drive is which?
Is there some way to see my drive icon in the dock?

The only thing I can think of that might work is to add the Reader to your Startup Items in the Accounts section of the System Preferences. After adding the Reader as an item to load on startup, turn on the check box to hide the application. If this does work, you would need to keep the Reader running all the time. Otherwise, once you quit and relaunch it, the settings to hide it wouldn't apply, and it would show up in the Dock again.
Edit: Never mind, I just tried it. It no workee.

  • Cannot see the correct network volumes

I have recently added a new user account with administrator priveledges when I try to use that account to mount network volumes then the only volumes I see are "Applications", "Library" and "Users". Apple knows about the problem because they address it on their website and in Mac Help. They state that it happens if auto login is selected, in my case this is off and their 2nd fix is to log out and log back in again. This doesn't help either! The other users don't have this problem.
Does anyone know who I can see the network volumes again?

I had that problem, but it was for all users, so I don't think what worked for me on that would be the same for you.
Might try dragging that user's pref folder to the desktop & relog...
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences
Though some user stuff is still in...
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
    /Library/Preferences/

  • Consecutive Numbering and Current Date

I am trying to create an invoice (that I will save as a template) and I want the invoice number to change, each time I open the invoice template, to the next consecutive number. I also want the date to stay current each time I open the document. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. I am neither familiar with computer lingo nor am I very computer savvy, so a lot of that is really confusing to me. Is there a plain English "numbers for dummies" way of going about it? Thanks again.
    Hi MATOS,
Fortunately you don't need to understand most of it in order to use it.
As a user, you need only understand:
    Open the Script Editor.
Copy Yvan's script from his post, then Paste it into the Script editor.
Then read this part (assuming your English is stronger than your French). The numbers labeling the sections are used in my notes below:
    Section 1A:
    +++++++
Save this script as Script : invoiceWithDateAndnumber.scpt
Move the newly created file into the folder:
    <startup Volume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Scripts:Applications:Numbers:
    Note 1
Maybe you would have to create the folder Numbers and even the folder Applications by yourself.
    Section 1B
menu Scripts > Numbers > invoiceWithDateAndnumber
will create a new document from the defined user template
and insert a new number and the current date as a fixed value.
    Section 2
    --=====
    The Finder's Help explains:
To make the Script menu appear:
Open the AppleScript utility located in Applications/AppleScript.
Select the "Show Script Menu in menu bar" checkbox.
    Section 3
    --=====
    Yvan KOENIG (VALLAURIS, France)
    2010/06/05
    Section 4
    --=====
    property theApp : "Numbers"
Adapter ces six “properties” à vos besoins
Adjust these six properties to fit your needs
    property myTemplate : "my_invoice.nmbtemplate"
    property fichierNum : "the_number.txt"
    property mySheet : "1"
    property myTable : "1"
    property cell4number : "A1"
    property cell4date : "A2"
    --=====
Section 4 is the beginning of the actual script. You will need to edit the properties list to fit your own situation.
The first property "theApp" names the application (Numbers) that the script affects. Do not change this.
    Below the line "Adjust these...":
    myTemplate:
Change "my_invoice.nmbtemplate" to match the name of your Invoice template, and add the ".nmbtemplate" extension to the name.
    fichierNum:
This is the name of the file that keeps the most recent invoice number. The script will create the file the first time the script is run, and will update it each tome after that. No change is needed in this line.
    mySheet:
    myTable:
These are currently set to use the first (ie. top of the list) Table on the first sheet of your invoice template. If the template contains only one table (and only one sheet) no change is needed. If your template contains more than one table, you may need adjust the number(s).
    cell4number:
This is the cell in which the Invoice Number will be placed. Change "A1" to the actual location of the Invoice Number on your template. Remember to enclose the location in double quotes.
    cell4date:
This is the cell in which the current date will be placed. Change "A2" to the actual location of the Invoice Date on your template. Remember to enclose the location in double quotes.
In Section 1, Note 1 tells you you will need a specific set of folders in which to place the script.
In the Finder, open a new window and click on yourAccount (the house icon with your username below it), then on Library, then on Scripts, then on Applications, then on Numbers.
Each time you click, it opens the folder and shows (in the next column, if your Finder window is in Column view) the items in that folder. If any of the names on this path are missing, you will need to go to the File menu, choose New Folder, and give the new folder the name shown above. (If you have not yet added any scripts, you will likely need to create at least the Applications and Numbers folders.)
Section 1A tells what to do with the script after you have edited it: Save it in the Numbers folder you created above. You can save it to the Desktop, then move it to the correct folder, or you could save it directly to the correct folder. Yvan's name is chosen to tell exactly what the script does.
Section 1B tells how to call the script (ie. how to get it to do what it's written to do):
go to the Scripts Menu, choose Numbers, then choose "invoiceWithDateAndnumber",
then describes what the script does.
The Scripts menu is likely not yet in your Menu bar, so Section 2 tells how to get it there. If you, like me, have a crowded Menu bar already, you may also have to remove something else to make room for the Scripts menu.
Section 3 tells who wrote the script (Yvan) and when he did so.
Once you've completed those steps (editing properties and saving the script to the correct location), creating a new dated and numbered invoice is a simple matter of choosing this script in the Scripts menu.

    Barry

  • Excel 2008, read-only file access from network volume

    Hi,
    Need some assistance please.
    I recently setup a Macbook Pro 17" 2.4Ghz (10.5.2) and did a migration from a Powerbook G4. Installed Office 2008.
Excel will not open ANY files from a network volume without giving a read-only access error.
Word is ok and opens files fine.
drag the file from the network to the desktop and it opens ok. drag it back and it copys ok.
so, I created a new user and the problem persists.
I fired up a Macbook running 10.5.2 and Office 2008 and it logged onto the network fine and opened the excel docs just fine.
mmm, ok must be an OS problem.
So, I have just endured waiting for the archive and install to complete on the Macbook Pro and the problem is still there !!!!!
    Help.
Is my only fix going to be a complete erase and start again from fresh ?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

right then, as it looks like I'm talking to myself....
I have just wiped clean the Macbook Pro.
I installed Leopard from scratch, then installed Office 2008.
Logged back onto the network share, and the read-only error came up again, ONLY in Excel.
    bugger.
Did the same thing with my Macbook and all is fine.
Copy the file to the local hard drive, opens ok.
I then copied the file to another Mac on the network.
    mmmm, opens fine.
    what's the difference....
mmmm, the machine it opens fine from is running 10.4
the machine which hosts all the data is running 10.3.9
    could this be the problem.
Just done a software update check on the 10.3 machine and there are some security updates that need doing.
Going to run that now and see what happens, otherwise I think the iMac running 10.3.9 is going to need to come up to 10.4 and fingers crossed this will solve it.
