Network volumes not appearing in Time Machine

I have a netwok volume attached via Mac Mini server used for Time Machine. Recently I had a disk problem and have copied the TM backups to another drive. I have three Macs two running 10.6.8 and one running 10.5.8. Using TM on two machines (10.6.8 and 10.5.8) works fine, it connects properly and backs up, however on the third (also 10.6.8) the TM Preferences does not "see" any of the attached network volumes only the directly attached. The network volumes appear on the desktop and it is possible to read/write to the network volumes from Finder.
I have replaced the prefs file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist to no avail.
Any suggestions most welcome.

  • Airport Extreme connected drive does not appear in Time Machines drive list

I have two Macbook Pros. Both have 500GB hard drives. I have an airport Extreme with a WD terabyte hard drive and a HP printer attached via USB cable. Both Macbooks can access the WD HD & internet.
One MacbookPro has time machine set up to use the Terabyte HD as backup.
I want the other MacbookPro to also use this terabyte drive for backup.
But when I try to set up Time Machine to use the drive, the drive does not appear in the backup drive list.
What can I do to fix this? I had a HD crash on the non-backed up Macbook recently. I desperately need it to be backed up!
    Any ideas?

Does the drive show in Disk Utility? Try a restart.

  • Timeline not appearing in Time Machine

Running Time Machine on a MBP connected to a Time Capsule by ethernet. For some reason the Timeline in Time Machine does not show any dates other than Now and Today.
The mounted sparsebundle shows all the separate backups in individual time-stamped folders, so the backup is occurring. There's just something lost between the backup folder and the Time Machine.
    Any ideas?

I finally got on the phone with a Senior Advisor at Apple. We created another user account (System Preferences > Accounts). Time Machine worked for that user. So, the Time Machine problem was user-specific.
We went back to the original user and moved to trash the folder <home folder>Library/Caches. From there we went and moved to the desktop <user>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
We then restarted the mac. Upon restart, we entered Time Machine and it worked fine. The timeline had reappeared!
Apparently there was something in the Cache that was causing the problem.

  • My Time Capsule's 5GHz network does not appear as a network any longer. Airport utility is 5.5.3 and iMAC is 10.7.1 The TC appears to be configured correctly in the utility screen.

My Time Capsule's, only the 5GHz network, does not appear as a network any longer. Airport utility is 5.5.3 and iMAC is 10.7.1 The TC appears to be configured correctly in the utility screen. This began sometime after upgrade to 10.7.1 however this does not explain why either of my iPAD's does not see the 5GHz network.

Wish some Apple folks would chime in...
Apple is not here. Even if they might rarely monitor these boards, they will not respond. We're all users, just like you.
Suggest that you open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
    Click the Wireless Options button
Check one more time to see if you still have the 5 GHz Name option enabled. If not, enter a check mark and click Update to save the new settings.
If 5 GHz is enabled, temporarily disable the setting and Update. Then go back in and enable the setting again.
If you still cannot "see" the network from any device, about all that you can do at this point is reset the Time Capsule back to factory defaults and try the configuration again to see if it will "take". Lion is causing some strange issues, and this may be another.
If this is not successful, then it's time to contact Apple support or arrange a visit to an Apple store to let them take a look

  • Do not trust your Time Machine backups

I had a very unpleasant surprise yesterday : I found out the hard way that I could not trust my Time Machine backup...
Once booted in recvoery mode to select "Restore TimeMachine backup", the process starts and seem to happily finish a few hours later (surprisingly, it finished when actuall 3 hours of restoration are indicated). No error message, just a confident statement that backup is restored and the computer will reboot in 10 seconds.
Thing is, well, the computer wouldn't boot... I just got a black screen right after the Apple logo, no mouse pointer, just a plain black (backlighted) screen on my MacBook Pro.
I know my way in the system, I'm pretty technical, so I decided to not give up, after a few hours playing around with recovery boot, terminal sessions and log file reading, it appeared that a lot of files were missing, especially system files.
As an example : most content in /usr/share/shadbox, but also ll /System/Library/CoreServices/logind and other files.
After copying these files either from a very old Time Machine backup from end January or from another computer, I finally manage to boot the system.
Lots of applications ar not usable because of missing contents (AppStore, Disk Utility, etc, etc)...
This is totally unacceptable, I work in the computer storage industry, our customers would burn us down to the ground if they could not rely on their storage.
What's worse ? Looks like there is no way to check a backup. Apple provides a "Verify Backup" option in the Time Machine menu, but it is only valid for network backup, not local disks.
Thing is, I was happily looking at my backups every hours, running without errors, througout many many days, only to realize when I need it that it is corrupted.
What do people do when they need reliable backup, except for paying big buck to company who actually care ?

I don't know if both disks are working properly, and I would almost say that's not the point.
Let me explain : Time Machine backups were running without warning, to me, it means everything is fine. There should be some kind of regular verification, and a way to manually check that a given backup is valid.
I ran a disk utility Verify on the TM drive, it finished without issue.
Yes, the files were missing from the TimeMachine disk, for example, /usr/share/shadbox was complete if I looked at a backup from end january, but most files were missing looking at any after that. Same thing for /System/Library/CoreServices/logind
I did a complete restore because I installed a beta release of the OS, I'm a developer, but realizing that one key product I need was not working (VMware Fusion), I decided to roll back. Following that bad experience, I searched for a way to verify backup and was astonished to find out that there is no such thing, Apple provides a flawed software with no mean to very integrity of the backups, that's just very, very bad.
To be completely honest, I should mention that while installing beta software, a few file system inconsistencies were detected and fixed by the installer, maybe that is the cause, but in no condition should you have a system that works perfectly in one hand, and a corrupted backup on the other hand, especially if the used backup disk is healthy.

  • Lost events not even in Time Machine restore.

I've had all of my events disappear from iCal as well.  I'm running Lion on my laptop and Snow Leopard on my desktop because the RAM is only 1GB.  When I try to resore iCal from Time Machine the events are gone from the restored version as well.

Time Machine was backing up other external disks as well as my startup disk.
Both my startupdisk and the external disks that are still working appear on Time Machine GUI (but I "call" TM when I have the FINDER opened). The one that's missing if the one that doesn't show up in Finder (it looks like Time Machine only aknowledges the disks that are available now and not also the ones that were available a couple of days ago but that are now disconnected).

  • Restore library from network user's home on Time Machine backup

Anyone know how to restore ONLY an individual user home Library or items inside a specific user's Library from a Time Machine backup?
Our 10.10.1 Server 4.0.3 server has its data including Network Userhomes backed up to Time Machine. Due to the keychain and preference issues that still plague us, we periodically need to restore a single user's Library or parts of the Library such as Preference folder. With Apple hiding the Library in general, you cannot see the Library for the users in the back up. As a result we are forced to restore the entire User home for the user in question to fix a single or several files that have become corrupted. With email etc. some user homes are pretty large and that process, as a result, can take quite some time when compared to replacing a single corrupt file with the one that worked yesterday.
    Thanks

Thanks Linc. I was trying to navigate to it in Time Machine which has it hidden as usual.
Using Finder > Go > Go to folder > /Volumes/Drive/Userhomeslocation/User/Library I was able to get the folder and then went to Time Machine as Linc suggested.
Linc do you know of a way to show all Network User Libraries on the server without showing all invisible files?

  • Apple Modem will not answer after Time Machine Restore

After restoring from a Time Machine backup the Apple External Modem no longer answers incoming [fax] calls. I verified all modem/fax settings - they are good and the same as before the restore. The Modem Status in the Menu Bar doesn't indicate "ringing..." when the line is ringing and the Fax no longer answers.
Opening the Console I see these errors repeating endlessly-
    9/15/08 10:09:10 AM com.apple.service_helper[1271] com.apple.efax: Already loaded
9/15/08 10:09:10 AM [0x0-0x15015].com.apple.systempreferences[155] No matching processes were found
    9/15/08 10:09:27 AM com.apple.efax[1274] /usr/bin/fax: line 537: cd: /var/spool/fax: No such file or directory
I believe the fax app is supposed to create this dir, but I created the dir in /var/log/ as follows:
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 68 Sep 15 10:33 fax
Makes no difference, rebooted, still makes no difference, ran disk utility to see if it would change permissions, no it didn't - still getting the errors, so there's something else that's also missing after a restore, or the error message is erroneous since the dir now exists.
It appears a Time Machine Restore - doesn't restore all that's needed for the fax subsystem to work. I thought the restore was supposed to completely restore the volume to previous operating state?
Any help on this would be great, I now have no incoming FAX - one of the main jobs of this Mini - thx - KR

By the way, it's running OS X 10.5.4

nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

  • Macbook Pro not saving local time machine snapshots

    Hi,
First time using the Apple forums here but I can't seem to find a definate answer for my question.
I purchased a new Macbook Pro last week that came with Lion preinstalled. I noticed it was taking local time machine snapshots. In Time Machine it said Local snapshots, then backups each day etc etc....
Now it does not say local snapshots and they are not in my time machine timeline.
The only thing I have changed is my backup drive for Time Machine (3TB drive 600GB used now) so I do not know why my local snapshot function has vanished.
I know Lion is very new but has anybody seen this or has some advice for getting it back on again?
    Thanks

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Is it possible to restore a single deleted note from a time machine backup?  If so how?

is it possible to restore a single deleted note from a time machine backup?  If so how?

    Hi James,
I was able to use VI server to invoke LV 6.1 VI's using LV 7.0 without issue.
After discovering this and mentioning it in a post somewhere, Rolf Kalbermatter indicated that was expected. and I should not be suprised.
    So....
    Vi Server may help you.

Is there a separate place for me to post VIs to be converted?  What's a ballpark figure for the maximum file size i could put on to be converted?
Do you know if the LabVIEW developers can/will create a way to overcome this problem rather than having to convert a VI through all the intermediate versions?
To the best of knowledge NO.
For each versino of LV there isw code included that runs behind the scenes when you open a VI from an earleir version which replaces old functions with the new versions. This is called Mutation code. To accomplish its task it has to know everything that changed between version X and Y. Since it is possible to baby step the versions up and the number of user that jump multiple major versions is small, I don't think any effort will go into that work.
THe largest attachment I have managed to upload was 3 or 4 Meg.
    Just trying to help,
