Should be. See the following:

Of course you should also check online help by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching on relevant terms such as "sharing."

  • Can I dock my windows Laptop with IMAC?

    Hi,
This would have been a no possibly even 3 years ago, but with the development of common software protocols allowing a flourishing application market, is it now possible for me to dock my Windows PC with a new IMAC. To the extent that the MAC is actually driving things using its OS.
    4 Reasons:-
The first reason for wanting to use the Apple OS, is the fault of my overzealous company security settings which when in full flow like they are now on "Virus Scan Thursday" runs up about 90% of the RAM to the point is can take 5 minutes to open a basic forecasting sheet.
The second one is:- after using IPAD day to day for the past three years I can honestly say its one of the most intuitive devices to use, especially Numbers and Keynote. No more googling for formulas. To make my point about its simplicity, I draw your attention to Excels Autosum function which i'm sure you can remember is the Sigma symbol, so poor a symbol is it, that MS have to translate and scribe the words AutoSum in every common language known to man next to it, you opted for the = sign.
The third reason is:- Windows just seems so thrown together now that it might, and quite often does stop working and self destructs. A little bit like the Vauxhall Victor X type did in the 60's. Let me explain what I mean. Take the three next gen consoles on the market, Sony PS4, MS XBOX ONE, and the Nintendo WII U. My boys and are fortunate enough (my bonus payment not so lucky) to have the latter 2-following subsequent visits from a white bearded fellow. I like the shooty brash environments that are driven up in games like COD, which to be fair is the only real game on XBOX ever that I've played since getting over the shock that I could connect with other people over the planet and play them. Anyway before I run off track onto a rose-tinted day when me an my brother would divide the screen up into two sections using cardboard. When playing Goldeneye on the N64; one of us laying prone, one of us sat in an inflatable plastic sofa, both pair of eyes glued to the action on their OWN PORTION of the screen. The cardboard acting like the plastic piece separating two battleship players, neither one knowing the others position. But for the Xbox that's about it, the other games developers don't seem to get the game-play over graphics argument. In the case of some its either far-far too complex for concern, I'm thinking about those driving games with the flash cars and exquisite level of detail in the telemetry and how that car handles. Realistically how many of us have the time to play a full 24 hour Le - Mans - Grand Prix with all of the automatic, car control gadgets switched off. To the complete opposite where the game-play is sooooooo simple, take the reboot of tomb raider which took around 12 hours to clock with all of the collectables. Then you have thousands of apps to contend with. Zune, Music player, etc all bolted onto a bastardised win 8 setup. Then look at Nintendo, and its OS its refined and things seem to work, the published games are always excellent and playable by any age. The new Yoshi wool world looks amazing but it has the complexity of the stardome on Mario world.
The fourth and final reason is, it would probably save me 5 - 10 minutes a day swapping files over email etc etc... But, Its 5 minutes more I can spend with my boys practising their footballing skills and acting out their other ambitions, so that one day they don't have to worry about the appalling 1st world plight of interoperability problems between Windows and Apple! which like Oasis and Blur from Britpop England in the 90's and Love it or Hate it Marmite, realised that being ever so slightly different and arguing a bit about the relative merits of the new stuff, cautiously publicly insulting each other whilst really being squash buddies would ensure massive success for both of them!

  • Networking windows 7 and iMac Mountaijn Lion

We have a Windows pc and a Windows Laptop both running Windows 7.  And an iMac running Mountain Lion.
I have set up my network Workgroup and can browse the Internet.  From the Mac i can access the two windows pcs and read ad write info.  Howevever, when I try to access my Mac I cannot and get the message "access is denied".
Has anyone any ideas what I should have done.  I have chosen sharing in my Mac and Windows pc's in the network and sharing centre.  I think the problm may be with the Mac set up.
I would be grateful to anyone who has had the same problem who could help me to resolve this issue.
    Joan Pitman

By default the Mac is configured to share with other Mac's only. To allow Windows to interact with the Mac, you need to enable Windows sharing.
On the Mac, open System Preferences and select Sharing. Then select File Sharing and then press the Options button. Here you will see that Apple File Sharing is enabled. You will also see Windows Sharing. Enable this and then also enable the user name in the Accounts section. This name is what you use on the Windows computer when you are prompted to authenticate after selecting the shared folder on the Mac.
With the Windows sharing enabled you can then browse for the shared folder on the PC and authenticated when prompted.

  • Using my windows laptop with my new Airport Etreme base station

I've just recently connected the Airport Extreme to my iMAC G4. I understand that it should work with my Windows laptop. I've set up the base station and do have a connection on my laptop with excellent "signal strength" and the speed, at best, is 54.0Mbps, although it's usually at 18.
I'm not getting internet on my laptop. Of course the whole idea of purchasing the AX was to use the laptop at home also. Previously I had a netgear and it worked fine, speed wise... until it crapped out for some reason.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Marco
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Just in case anyone is following this...
After speaking with my isp and getting to the purple.com website but no other one I was told by the man on the phone my problem must be a resource issue with my laptop. I said that wasn't possible as I already went into msconfig and unchecked almost everything in the startup tab.
So I tried to connect the laptop directly to the modem and I was able to surf the internet without a problem. So, as thought in the beginning, there's some setting somewhere in regards to the Airport Extreme that's not correct...

  • PS CS6 windows compatible with iMac OS X

Hi there, I purchased Photoshop CS6 for Windows back in March 2013, to use on my laptop. I just purchased a iMac 27-inch OS X 10.9.1 running Maverick upgrade. i was told Windows PS CS6 would be compatible with the new Mac. My question is... Will it work? i don't want to install and then have nothing but problems like I'm reading about after a few searches. Thanks for any advice

Windows software doesn't run on Mac unless you install a Windows on it via Bootcamp or a virtual machine. Beyond that - yes, technically Macs are just normal PC hardware and once you have a working Windows version on it, your PS would work just fine. If you want to run it natively on OSX, you need to run a platform swap.

  • Networking windows 98 with Lion

I have a brand new Mac Mini with Lion Server. I need to have my Windows 98 box see the Lion Server. In Windows 98 under Network Neighborhood I can see the server but when I click on it it errors out. It says it cannot read the server. My Windows XP machine has no problem reading the Lion Server.
Any suggestions on how my Window 98 can see my Mac Mini with Lion Server will be appreciated.

NetAdmin is a very old and unsupported utility and perhaps it's
making the password changes at the bindery level. The Microsoft
Client is also a bindery client. NWADMIN32 and C1 are NDS
Admin utilities. Again, for support here - you need to use Novell
Client *regardless* where you are seeing the errors. Errors aren't
there if using the supported combination of client and server.

  • Sync not working between Window laptop with FF32 and android tablet with FF 32

    Computer is Windows 7
    Labtop is android
    Both devices have FF 32
As far as I know, sync has been set up correctly on both devices. But they still aren't syncing. It looks as though I've missed a setting somewhere. I tried to follow instructions from an earlier version, but the menu was different and I couldn't find the counterparts for this version. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Jane

    Hi gohim2j,
Thank you for your question, I understand that there are two devices attached to your sync account that do not appear as they are syncing. Please try the following steps to kick start the sync:
    # Make a copy of the profile folder for a back up of the current data.
    # Remove the account from each of the devices, (on the desktop from the "3 bar" menu select "Options" and click on sync. Next to the email, remove account. On the mobile device, go to accounts and select Firefox, tap on the account name and select "Remove account")
    # On the desktop, go to accounts.firefox.com and sign into the account. When you reach the notification "Sync will begin momentarily" close Firefox. Open Firefox and select the Tools menu and click "Sync Now"
    # On the mobile device, re-add the account. Go to the same url accounts.firefox.com and sign into your sync account. Once it has been added, go to the sync menu with the list of check boxes are to select what to sync. Are there any notifications there? Sometimes there will be a warning asking to toggle Auto-sync. Once this is done from the Data menu of the Android device, the sync process will begin.
    # Wait for a bit, then go to the Desktop to check for the "Mobile Bookmarks" folder in the Bookmark's manager.
Did it start to sync? If not it is possible to investigate any error in the sync logs. I can provide instructions on how to do this with your response.

  • Networking my MacBook with iMac

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but i couldn't find a thread, and despite the cost of apple support - they are only open BH...which seems ridiculous.
Anyway...I have a G5 iMac which i have just installed an Airport Extreme Card in.
I am waiting on my Airport Express device, however the Apple Support people told me i could still network my iMac and new MacBook in the meantime, meaning that i could share files from the iMac and use the iMac's ADSL interent network (although both couldn't be connected at same time).
I assume i have to go into the network settings and put in an IP address or something, but can't quite work it out...any suggestions?
Thanks in advance (because I am not too good at all this stuff!!)

  • Is it possible to network Mac laptop with PC's. have three pc's wired to my network and can not see them on my laptop.

Looking to see if it is possible to view my PC's on my MacPro. Have 3 PC's networked and was hoping to link laptop also, but can not seem to do it. Have WIFI and that is working. I am a novice at this. Please help.

    Hi Larry,
    It should be easy.
I assume Sharing is setup on the PCs?
    Find IP on computers...
    http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/communication/ethernet/office/winxp/2882/
On the Mac In finder, select Go menu>Connect to Servers, use the Browse button there, or..., type in the IP of a computer, like...
    smb://10.0.1.5
    smb://192.168.1.3

  • Network Adapter - LACP with iMac

    Hi,
I've bought a new iMac 27" a few weeks ago - now I'm thinking about the Thunderbolt Display as an Add-On... ;-)
Looking at the tech specs I've seen that the Thunderbolt Display has got an ethernet port also - which I think is primary used for MacBooks, when they connect to the cinema display.
But if I got an ethernet already connected to my iMac, and adding an additional ethernet port to this, will my mac support LACP or any other port-aggregation protocol (my switch can do a lot - Cisco aka Linksys (cheap and good...))
It's not an essential need - it was just an idea...
Thanks, if anyone can answer my question...
    Cya
    Bjoern

While I have not actually tested this, the answer should be yes.  Attempting to create a bonded interface will reveal both the built in and the display ethernet.  So the interface is showing the correct ports and it will allow you to bond them together.

  • IMac and Windows Laptop on the Same Wi-Fi Network?

First I just wanted to thank all those who replied to my previous (and first ever) post advising on the best way to set up a wireless home netwrok to share a DSL connection.
In the end I decided against buying an Apple AirPort base station, and bought a third party modem-router-wireless access point (a Speedtouch 580).
I set the 580 up to send the internet conncetion out on the Wi-Fi network, and was able to connect my Windows laptop (with a Speedtouch 110g wirelss card) to the Wi-Fi network and gain internet access no problem! I never thought it could be that easy, so was ecstatic! I even managed to have my Centrino laptop connect to the network and share the internet connection.
Then it came to my iMac G5 (I have AirPort Extreme built in). I turned the airport on and scanned for networks. When I first found my network I couldn't connect, so changed the router's security to WEP from WPA. Now, I still don't know how my iMac connected to the Wi-Fi network, but when I came back to it after having walked away in despair, it was simply connected!
My problem now is that I don't seem to be able to connect both a Windows PC and my Mac to the Wi-Fi network at the same time. Why might this be?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

My problem now is that I don't seem to be able to
connect both a Windows PC and my Mac to the Wi-Fi
network at the same time. Why might this be?
You have not configured your wireless router correctly.
Without seeing the configuration it is very difficult to ascertain what the specific problem might be.
    Reset the router and re-configure.
You need to configure your router to share a single IP address (NAT) in order to use your DSL connection with more than one client.

  • Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a  windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm?  I don't know too much about this stuff.  My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.
