Networked computers need access to one file

I don't know exactly where to post this message, but I'm starting here. If one of the mods believes it belongs in a different category, go ahead and move it with my blessing and eternal gratitude.
Scenario: Office full of (10) macs. All running OS 10.4.x Networked and behind a firewall. Users are very very un-computer savvy and a little hesitant to try new things or do things that are not explained step-by-step. Each computer has its own user and they all keep separate files for documents. They cannot access each other's files/computers from their own work stations.
Need: I need for them to be able to get to a common folder to access a single file. They will then modify the file and leave it there for others to access.
Need: How do I set that up? How do I make it as easy as possible so they can all do it with a minimum of effort? It needs to be easy or they will not do it.
All suggestions appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You would use Personal FIle Sharing (and/or ftp), setting it up is easy:
Apple Menu / System Preferences / Sharing.
Turn on Personal File Sharing.
Go to the Accounts preference pane now and create a new, non-admin account.
I have mine setup for sharing and ftp, so I named the user ftp/dropbox.
Now, when you activate ftp and personal file sharing, you can use the IP address of the Mac and the account for users to login.
They would use the credentials for the account you created above in the Finder. Command-K or Go Menu / Connect to server...
Once the volume is mounted, you can create a shortcut of it on the desktop like you do for any file.
Make the ftp/dropbox account secure by using a good password.
Depending on your network, you could ask for a static IP address, which makes it easier in case the DHCP (if used) gives a new address after a reboot of the "server"

  • MacBook can't find network computers until accessed remotely

On my home Airport network, after I restart my MacBook it can see the other networked computers (i.e. they are listed in the network window) but I can't access them to read files or screen share. If I click on one of their icons nothing happens and then after a while a message comes up saying the other computer doesn't exist or is offline. Then if I go to one of those computers and access the MacBook, which I can do with no trouble, then go back to the MacBook I can now access all the other networked computers from the MacBook. The connectivity is available until I restart the MacBook.
This never happened before I got Snow Leopard, but I'm not sure that it started immediately with SL, it could have been some time afterward, so I don't know that SL is solely to blame. I've added no other system software or hardware to any of my computers.
Is there some setting I'm not using or what?

I'm kind of in a similar boat. I have three machines an iMac, MacBook Air, and a MacBook all with their own MobileMe accounts so "back to my Mac" is enabled. The strange thing is whether I'm on my home network or trying to access from the office to my home the computers show up in the sidebar but if I try to access file sharing no go. Now the strange things is screen sharing works fine so if I open that and access the file sharing preferences on the machine I want to access and toggle it off and back on bingo I can connect. I don't get it at all. I have been doing this for some time. A bit of a hassle but it works. I wish though I could figure out how to get file sharing to work on a regular basis.

  • Two VMs and exclusive write access to one file

How can one guarentee exclusive write access to a file when two vms want to write to it?
    I looked at
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/JDCTechTips/2003/tt0304.html#2
However, I am not sure whether a race condition could happen or not.
    (I thinking like:
if file is not writable, change to writeable,
else if file is writable, wait for a while and check again.
    write what you want
change file back to not writeable.
Is there some OS level exclusive access thing we can take advantage of? The follow up question would be, what about system crashes?
    Thanks.

The problem with what you describe is that two JVMs
could discover the file is not writeable at the same
time, and then change it to writeable. You need some
sort of action which can only be successfully
completed by one JVM. Here's an idea:
Create a dummy file which represents a "lock" (only
one JVM may hold the lock). When a JVM wants the
lock, it attempts to delete the file. This can only
succeed for one JVM. Once you have the lock, you do
your business and then restore the file.http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/api/java/io/File.html#delete()
not bad. It's a false situation too.
However, deadlock can happen if the other VM goes down while the lock is taken.

  • Windows 7 computers asking for network password to access shared files and printers on Windows XP PRO computer.

I have a network of 10 computers configured as peer-to-peer work group. I have upgraded one of the ten from Windows XP PRO to Windows 7 PRO. The other nine computers are all running XP PRO. AS near as I can tell they are all configured the same. I have the
same user and same passwords on all computers. One of XP computers is used as a print server. The Windows 7 computer initially was able to access shared files and printers on all XP machines with out requesting a network password.
Suddenly, the Win 7 computer began requesting a network password to access the shared files and printers on the XP print server. It will not accept any of the user names or passwords (all administrators on both machines with identical names and passwords.)
The Win 7 computer has no problem accessing the shared files on the other XP machines. It can even access shared printers in a different work group. Apparently something has changed but I'm at my wits end trying to figure what changed on either the Windows
7 machine or the print server XP machine.
I would appreciate any help. Thank you

    Hi,
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
    1.
Disable simple file sharing on the Windows XP computer:
How to disable simple file sharing and how to set
permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP
    2.
On the Windows 7 computer, go to “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings” and ensure that the
    following items are turned ON:
    Network Discovery
    File and printer sharing
    And this one is OFF:
    Password protected sharing
    3.
Temporarily disable or remove all the security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) on the computers and check if it works.
    In addition,
I would like to share the following with you for your reference:
    Troubleshoot file and printer

  • Replace one file in Published package

    Hi,
I need to replace one file in published Appv Package.
Please suggest the most appropriate way/s to accomplish that without disturbing users.
Do I have to edit the package in sequencer and then update it in AppvMan?
    Or simpler way...?
Please provide step by step. Don't have time to test and fine the right way.
    So need advice.
    Thx.
--- When you hit a wrong note its the next note that makes it good or bad. --- Miles Davis

The new package will already be enabled but once you're satisfied that the test is successful you can then provide your users with access to the new package. The next time their App-V client syncs it should publish the new package and become available to them.
You get the "Copy access and configuration settings" option when you're adding the upgraded package to the Management Console because it will detect a package with the same package ID on the server.
You're correct to conclude that the new version of the package won't be available (if you don't check that option when adding the new version) until you edit AD access in the package settings (also on the Management console) and add the AD group containing
all the users you don't want to disturb.
I certainly wouldn't use the word "independent" for the new package as it will supersede the existing package. If you wanted the option of having both versions available simultaneously, you could do a "Save a new package" in the Sequencer
once you've made your file changes which would give you a new Package ID.
Hope that all makes sense. It's easier when you can see the consoles and options yourself.

  • Scanning multiple pages into one file

I am scanning several pages that need to be in one file so that I can email that file. My printer has a flatbed where you can place only one page to be scanned at a time. A friend of mine said that it should ask if I want to scan another page but it doesn't.  It simple imports it to "My scans."  There are too many pages to try to email one at a time. I need it in one file. Can anyone help?

  • How to get audio and video in one file

hi...I am "premiere beginner user" and I have a simple question , I think..:)...Every time when I am trying to export media out from my premiere (using media encoder) I get video file and some audio files, but what I need is only ONE file, that contains both (audio and video)..for example , I have edited film in hd quality and I want it to export, I choose h.264 format(make some settings, pal, audio quality...) and when it´s "all done", only "result" I get is one video file and two audio files and they are not together :).....so please help mme anyone..ok and as you can see I am not from english speaking country, so sorry for my english...thanks for help....

There is no indication that something is out-of-sync or the ability to move/slip into sync like in FCE/FCP.
To the best of my knowledge, using match frame and overwriting the video with video+audio (or attaching it as a connected clip if you don't want to overwrite the video, which might have effects applied) is the best way to do this.
You can use the blade tool first in the timeline to get just the section you want to get back into sync. Make cuts so that you have a single clip that needs the audio resynced, select it, and use shift-F to select the original synced clip in the Event Browser. Make sure your play head is at the beginning of this video clip in the timeline. Press option-2, then 'q', and now you have the audio back in your timeline, synced with the video.  Delete the old, no-longer-synced audio and you should be set.

  • If I connect a time capsule via ethernet to an existing internet connection and use it to create a private wifi network for my wireless devices, will other users on the primary network (not the private wifi one) be able to access my files on my TCapsule?

Like it says in the title basically.
I want to use a time capsule to store my files and backups and access it from my phone and MacBook Air. However I do not want the others in my house who are currently connected to the same wifi/ethernet router to use my connection or my TC hard drives.
I had also been thinking about wirelessly extending the wifi network (a linksys N router) but I guess that will allow everyone to access my Time Capsule?
I hope you guys can help me.
    Regards, Guido

......will other users on the primary network (not the private wifi one) be able to access my files on my TCapsule?
No, if you have not provided them with the Time Capsule device password.
Users will be able to "see" the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder on their Macs, but they will not be able to access the drive or the files.
I had also been thinking about wirelessly extending the wifi network (a linksys N router) but I guess that will allow everyone to access my Time Capsule?
    Same answer as above.

You can't do what you want with iCloud.  You will need to setup remote access to your main computer with VPS or some similar remote access application.   With VPS you have an application running on your main computer turning it into a server and an client app on your laptop so you can access it remotely.  There are many such apps out there, some probably more feature filled than VPS.  You might post in the system forum that you're running and ask there.

  • How can I deny write access to datalog files for all but one process in LV8?

In LabVIEW 7.1, wiring the deny mode terminal of Open File.vi with a Deny Write Only enum constant was an effective means for ensuring that only one process could write to a datalog file at a time.  In LabVIEW 8.0, Open File.vi is no longer available and the new Open/Create/Replace Datalog vi does not provide a deny mode terminal.  Also, the new Deny Access vi does not support datalog files.  Furthermore, the Set Permissions vi is an unsatisfactory solution because under the Windows operating system, it simply sets the Read Only file attribute.  This is inadequate because I have demonstrated that it is still possible for two processes to open a datalog file with read/write access before either one has had a chance to set the Read Only file attribute in order to lock out the file.  If a process sets the Read Only file attribute first, then it can't open the file with read/write access for itself.
Does anyone understand the file mechanism by which deny mode used to work with the old Open File.vi?  I wish to restore the functionality I had in LV 7.1 in my LV 8 programs.
    Thanks!

    I appreciate the
empathy from Rolf, but I'm hoping that someone may have written one or
more vi's containing CINs that call Windows 2000/XP file access control
library routines.  At least I'm assuming that is how the deny mode
input to Open File.vi used to work in LV7.1.  The Microsoft
Developers Network on-line documentation on Access Control http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/secauthz/security/access_control.as... is
daunting to put it mildly.  But even if a set of CINs has not
already been coded, perhaps someone could point me to the specific set
of calls I need to make to absolutely guarantee that no two
clients can simultaneously open the same file with write privileges.   Unfortunately
the elimination of deny mode functionality for datalog files in
LV8 has sabotaged my commitment to a March 1 release date because it
would also be impractical to convert everything back to LV7.1 at
this point.   Sincere thanks to anyone who can help me out here!
    Unfortunately
the functionality you mention does not work in the way the deny mode in
the LabVIEW nodes works. Basically that deny mode is converted to an
according FILE_SHARE_READ/FILE_SHARE_WRITE value and passed to the
Win32 API CreateFile function. This is more or less the only place
where you can define a global share (or deny) access to a file. That is
also why the Deny Access node online help is talking about that the
    file is reopened.
But I just retried what you had tried to do, and low and behold it
works with wiring a datalog refnum to Deny Access. What is important
here however is that you do need to wire a datatype to the record type
input of the Open/Create/Replace Datalog node. Otherwise you can't
connect the resulting datalog refnum to any other file function, since
    it is an incomplete datatype.

  • Workgroup network printers and sales persons needing access to them

I have a site with multiple sales people that come and go like the wind (about 50). We have a small office workgroup in which we have 4 network printers on
it plus the wireless network. All of their work is done on the internet through their various Windows and Mac based laptops.
The problem is, is that each time we retire a printer and put in a new one, we need to run around to each laptop and load drivers. Scheduling this is a nightmare
and sometimes takes weeks to get everyone done.
There must be an easier way to do this.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
There are two basic ways to make a printer available to the computers on your small network:
Attach it directly to one computer and share it with all the others on a network.
Connect the printer as a stand-alone device on the network itself.
We could follow the suggestions by rj01, install the printer on one special workstation and then share it out, or we could enable homegroup in Windows. When a network is set up as a homegroup, printers and certain files are automatically shared. To
learn more about what homegroups do and how to use them, see
    HomeGroup: recommended links.
For more information about install a printer on a small network, we may check the similar article below:

Or we may consider to deploy printers through group policy:
