Networked Drive Mounting (or not..)

Ever since installing Leopard, I am no longer able to access any external drives connected to my PowerMac G5 from my MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro is running 10.5.1, while the G5 is running the latest version of Tiger. Pre-Leopard I could choose the external drives to mount to my MacBook Pro, but now I can only mount users and internal drives. Any ideas on what is causing this?(side note: there are 2 drives, on Mac OSX Extended and the other FAT-32, neither will show up.)
Thanks much.

Sorry missed that critical point!
I've just checked our 2 G4's and I've added an external drive to each of them and can see the external volume in Leopard's finder.
The only attributes that I can think of that might affect your access are the type of user login used (I used an Administrator account) and the "Ignore Ownership" attribute for the external volumes (found in Get Info for a volume). ie. it's checked on ours.

  • Network drive mount after sleep

I move a lot between 2 locations. One is my home office (Airport Internet connection) and my office where I connect via cable LAN connection. At office I mount several network drives defined in my Login Items.
The problem is, when I move from my home to the office with a sleeping computer it will not mount the network drives after waking up.
Is there a way to tell my mac to try mounting the drives after waking up?
    Thanks.

I find it best to NOT Automount them at all, but have a quick & easy Dynamic Mount system by first deleting those Login Items, then...
What I would do is, once you get the Icons mounted on the Desktop, is to drag them them to the Dock between Applications & Trash, or if you have many and just want a neat Popup Menu, then create a New Folder on the Desktop, drag those Mounted Icons to that Folder, (once there you can even rename them to whatever you wish), then drag that Folder to the Dock between Applications & Trash.
And of course I'd have 3 New Locations in Locations...
One called Hpme, one called Work, and one called All Off...

We use NFS, which is similar to CIFS as we are Linux shop.
    Works flawlessly..
Did you check the permissions on your installation compared to your server as they are managed separately?

  • How can I keep a network drive mounted all the time?

I have a Mac Mini hooked to my TV which is running Boxee. All of the videos/music is pulled from a network drive.
I have the drive set up to mount on Mac boot by putting it in my start up items. The problem I am running into is sometimes the drive will go offline or I may have to reboot it for one reason or another. When this happens the Mac Mini looses the mounted drive and I have to reboot the computer.
What I need is some kind of application that sits in the background and constantly checks to see if the drive is mounted and if it is not it mounts it again for me like it does on start up.
    Any Ideas???

Cron isn't used by OS X anymore, launchd handles scheduled tasks now, but you could still use cron if you wanted to schedule a task. This is a good place to start: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2001020700163714
You can definitely set up a launchd daemon, but it might be pretty complicated if you've never done it, it also may be more than you want to invest in this particular issue. Read about it here:
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPSystem Startup/Articles/LaunchOnDemandDaemons.html
I've also seen people recommend just setting an event to repeat in iCal. For the event, add an alarm, and as the alarm, tell it to run a script. Have the event repeat as often as you like, indefinitely. That, my friend, is a poor man's scheduled task solution.

  • Powerpoint 2013 throwing 'File in Use' errors when saving to a network drive, file is NOT in use

One of our sites is having a strange issue when saving to a network location in Powerpoint.  I'm not sure it's a Powerpoint problem, but it's a place to start...
When saving a ppt to a mapped network drive (the client is running Windows 8 / Office 2013, the network drive is a DFS share, pointed to a Server 2012 machine if that matters), users will almost always get the following error:
"Someone else is working in (filepath\name) right now. Please try again later."
This happens regardless of where the file is being saved on the network drive, in fact it happens even when there is no pre-existing file with that name in the location.  So, even if I'm saving a brand new copy of test.pptx to F:\Share\PPT where there
is not currently a test.pptx, I get the error.
Word, Excel, and all other tested apps save properly.  Powerpoint can save correctly to the local computer, but not to the network drive or to My Documents (which redirects to the same network drive).
When the error pops up, if I look in Open Files in Computer Management on the Fileserver, I see the file I'm trying to save listed as being open, but it shows 'Disconnected' rather than a username.
Any suggestions would be appreciated - again, not sure that this is a Powerpoint problem - could be Windows 8 or some mysterious DFS thing...
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Been having a very similar issue in our environment and just came across this thread while Googling and looking for answers.
In our case, we have Windows 7 clients and 3 main files servers - 2 are Server 2008 R2, and one is Server 2012.  We use PeerLink File Collaboration to sync the files between
the servers (similar concept to DFS).  For us, it seems to happen specifically with Excel 2013, and only when saving to the Server 2012 file server.  I can reproduce the message pretty much every time.  After seeing your post,
I tried it in Powerpoint just out of curiosity, but it saved properly - Word saves properly as well.
Been doing a bunch of testing to try and narrow it down, and this is what I've found:
    Excel 2013 -> Server 2012 = error message.
    Excel 2013 -> Server 2008 R2 = no error message.
    Excel 2010 -> Server 2008 AND Server 2012 = no error message.
<o:p>We've been leaning towards the PeerLink replication as the culprit up to this point, but last night I did some testing with the PeerLink Collaboration turned off, and
still received the error message.. so now I'm even more confused!
I see that it's been a few months since your post..  have you made any progress here?</o:p>

  • Windows Network Drive Mapping properties not being associated with Test Stand deployment

I recently upgraded a TestStand/LabVIEW (Developer Suite 2012 DS1) deployment project from a Windows XP Pro OS to Windows 7 Enterprise. Now, when I run the Test Stand deployment, Network paths that used to be hard coded into my File Globals are no longer recognized. I re-wrote the vi's, and put "File Dialog" pop-ups so that I could see what path the control is being opened up at, and what appears to be happening is the Network Drive that I am defaulted to is appearing as if it is "disconnected" in the navigation window, and the path is defaulted to my root directory. I can navigate out to my network path no problem from the navigation window, and after the first time I perform this user action, subsequent executions open up to the path I have hard coded in my Sequence File Globals. However, if I reboot my host computer, I again have to go through the exercise of manually pointing to the proper network location? If I use the Windows Explorer to check Mapped Networked Drives, everything is properly mapped and connected.
Has anyone ever seen this behavior?

    Hi ATE Dude 22,
I have not come across this problem before but here is a document from MSDN and one from NI which discuss file path conventions. From what I've seen, UNC is also accepted under Windows XP so I would advise using it for your file globals.

  • Creating a persistent network drive mount

There was a former post on this, but I have a further question. I have followed the instructions in the previous topic: "Connect to the drive manually first, then go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items tab and add the connected drive to the list."
However, now every time I log into my Macbook a Finder window pops up showing the contents of the network drive. The above instructions helped get the drive mounted, but now I'm getting the Finder window at login.
    Help is appreciated!

i picked up the following Apple script from another thread - i haven't tested it so no guarantees - but it is supposed to achieve what you want:
    try

+mount volume "afp://<devicename>.local/<volumename>" as user name "<accountname>" with password "<accountpassword>"+
    +
end try+
the key would be that above AppleScript runs at log on. it should just place the drive's icon on the desktop.
    good luck !

  • 10.7.5 will only see network drives which do not exist

Have two external drives plugged into a Time Capsule. Would previously be able to access either or both.
Now, after logging in only one of the network drives shows up - the one that is turned off and unplugged (appears in finder, but can not access once clicked).
The drive that is plugged in and turned on will not show up in finder windows.
Restarting computer and force restarting finder have no effect.
    What would cause this?

  • Network drives volumes will not mount

Hi can anyone help me. At my wits end here. Have upgraded 2 machines in our office. 1 Intel Pro mac and 1 Intel iMac, upto 10.6.6
Problem is now when i log onto the ehternet network server drives or random LOCAL USB drives (basically anything external) the connecting machines restart the desktop environment and refuse to mount the drive or folder in question, sometimes it can be infinite loop style reload of the desktop until it finds what its looking for or not. Not all the time just occasionally. Have re installed the combo update but still not fixed it. Could it be a faulty Snow Leopard disc?
Should have mentioned that the server machine is running 10.4 and was running perfectly with the machines on 10.5, so presuming its not that rather the snow leopard upgrade..

I am having the same issue at our school district. If i wipe out the account and network folder, then recreate it individually it works on both Mac and Windows. So definitely on the server end.

  • Network Drives mounting for all users on one machine

I have a diskless netboot image that I've made specifically to capture the local drive and run system image Utility. I'm trying to "perfect" this image, and I would like to have 2 network shares be mounted automatically when any network user signs in. one to write the DMG to and the other being the NetBootSP0 folder. I'm thinking the way to do this would be a script, but I don't know how to make it, how to set it up to run when any account signs in.
    thanks!

I would also love to be able to do this.
I have my iTunes library in iTunes on a virtual machine on an SMB PC mount. If I bring up iTunes on the MAC to sync my iPods then it will fail unless I manually connect to the SMB mount.
Is there any way to automount an SMB volume at login time?

  • Corsair pen drive mounting but not visible on desktop

    Hi there
I'm having a problem or two with a MacBook Pro. The Corsair USB2 pen drive I've been using quite happily for some time now appears at first glance to have stopped mounting itself when it's plugged in.
I've taken a look in disk utility and the drive appears there so hopefully I'm right in assuming that it's mounting correctly. Also by clicking the volume from disk utility I'm able to browse the drive, so what have I done?
Is it possible to hide a mounted drive? It isn't visible in finder either, only through disk utility.
    Any help would be grand.
    Thanks in advance

  • Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series, Problem installing Network driver, Wireless Key not working

    Hi,
This is a brand new Dell, which has Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit installed, and I re-installed all drivers, and did BIOS update as well, but when downloading Network drivers with correct Service Tag and product, I get to the installation screen where it asks to Activate Wireless Key. The Fn + PrtScr does not work, even if I go to PC Settings, Bluetooth, I can switch it on with mouse, but when using the Fn + PrtScr it does not switch between On & Off within PC Settings. So I cannot install the Wireless drivers at all, I have to Cancel Installation.
    Any suggestions?

The Service Tag may be listing the wrong wireless card variant. Please provide the hardware IDs so we can confirm:

  • Why does my external drive mount as not writable?

I've got a 1 TB external WD drive formatted as Mac OS Extended.  After upgrading my MacBook Pro this drive occasionally is mounted as read-only.  If I open Disk Utility and Verify the volume, the verify completes without reporting any errors, and when it remounts the volume, it's writable again. Anyone else seen this behaviour?

You may try a SMC reset, maybe do it 2-3x.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Network Drive Mount Unable to View Files

I recently purchased a Buffalo flexnet 1TB drive for my parents. Both of them use Windows, and mount works fine for the two of them. I, however, have two machines on which I use Arch. I'm having trouble mounting the drive on my own machines.
One, I named the drive netdrive, but when I try to mount it using mount -t cifs //netdrive/share /path/to/mount, it says it can't resolve address for netdrive. It works, however, if I use //hd-celu2-ed4a/share which is the default drive name. //netdrive/share works on the Windows machines, and I don't understand what's going on.
Two, if I do mount using the IP address of the default server name, it will successfully mount, but I can't see any of the files on the drive. If I do "touch test.txt", I can see the file on the windows side, but I can't see it form Arch. This is the same on both of my Arch machines.
How do I go about mounting this thing successfully, so I can view and edit file and such? Less important: how do I get it so that it mounts with the proper name? I would be plenty satisfied to have the answer to issue two with or without issue one solved.

Until someone knowledgeable about cifs and windows shares chimes in have a look at man mount.cifs.
Perhaps trying different combinations of user, password, uid, gid, etc may get things working.
