Networked Folder Blank In "View As Icons"

Hi all
This is a very strange issue
We have a number of Mac who store work on a NAS
When the users open a particular folder in "View as icons" it is
blank (see pic)
However if I change the view to list it is shows all that is in there (see
next pic)
Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can put it right - with a lot of folders list view isn't ideal.
Ironically if I change the folder name it shows in list view for a couple of days before going back to blank

It's not that it has been disabled as such, more that it is not the way that the Finder dialogue works in OS X - Apple made a decision when designing OS X that when in Open/Save mode, the column view (which gives complete navigation through your system like Windows' old File Manager) was the most useful method for locating files.
The way I use OS X, I have to say that i NEVER use Open now from inside programs like Photoshop, which I find a cumbersome way to work. Instead I have the folder open on the desktop in Icon view, the icon size set to maximum, and the Arrange By (sort) set to what is needed for that particular project. I use Command-tab to quickly switch between Photoshop and Finder and then I just double-click the large icon of the document I want to open.
Everyone finds their own best and most efficient way of working, so I hope you find a solution that best gels with how you work. OS X gives you lots of options.

  • Applications Folder won't stay in Icon View

In the Applications Folder I want to have my icons arranged in a certain way at a certain size and always open in that view, but they never stay that way after I switch my mac back on.
    I have tried everything:
    1. Ticking "Always open in icon view". The tick is always gone next time I switch my mac back on. In all other sidebar folders this tick remains so I always get the view I want, along with icon order and icon view which is OK for other folders - but not Application Folder. It always opens in List View so when I change it to icon view, my icon sizes and order are back to default.
    2. Arrange by "Snap to grid" - still opens in List View.
    3. Tried "Set as default" in icon view - still opens in List View.
    4. Deleted DS Store in Application Folder, as advised elsewhere, and setting it up again with "Always open in icon view". Still opens up again in List View.
    5. Deleted "com.apple.finder.plist", as advised elsewhere, and set everything up again, but still opens in List View next time I start up my mac.
Why does the tick in "Always open in icon view" keep disappearing for my Applications Folder next time I start up?
How can I have this folder always open in icon view?
Something is not right somewhere but I don't know how to make it right.

Yes, I have done everything as you've outlined. It has worked as it should for all other Finder/Sidebar folders - Documents, Downloads etc, whether permanently list view, icon view etc.
I also set up the Applications Folder the way I want it, tick the "Always open in icon view" box, then the next time I switch on the tick is gone and it's opened in list view. All other Sidebar folders are fine, and still have the box ticked.
It's just the Applications Folder - something seems to be wrong somewhere and it's not anything I've done, or not done as it works with the other folders.

  • Desktop icon for a file on network shows blank in Windows 8.1, if selected the second icon from the library

    Hello,
I have a strange issue on my Windows 8.1 machine. The icon for for an executable file on the network shows blank, if I select the second icon from the library. (File->Properties->Change Icon and select the second icon - This file has two icons)
If I re-create the IconCache.db, then it is showing correctly. But I do not want to do this every time.
    Regards
    Mattehw

It indicates your Icon Cache is corrupted and you need to rebuild it.
Open the command prompt window, type each of the following and after every command, hit the Enter button:
    cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    attrib –h IconCache.db
    del IconCache.db
    start explorer

  • Network Folder Setup - "No Write Permission". Windows Vista.

    Product: 8600 N911g
I am having issues in creating a network folder to scan to my computer. It responds ‘No write permission’
**NOTE**Before I allow you to continue reading, I need to first know to I need to create a password in my user account, or turn off UAC to create a scan network folder on my PC? If so, then that is what I need to do to correct this issue.
Steps I have performed in attempting to accomplish this task:
In Windows to create shared folder:
    1) Created folder.
    2) Open folder properties, under 'sharing' tab, selected 'Share' button, then selected 'Share' button.
    3) A dialog window appears and states 'Sharing items', and when it is complete, it states "Your folder is shared. You may e-mail these links to notify people that you have shared these files, or copy the links onto the Windows clipboard, where you can paste them into any program you choose.”
    4) When I select ‘Done’, it returns to the folder properties, and states in ‘Network File and Folder Sharing’ under ‘Sharing’ tab under ‘Network Path’: ‘Not Shared’.
**I don’t understand that it just said ‘Your folder is shared’, then under Network Path is stated ‘Not Shared’.**
    5) Since in stated ‘Not Shared’, I selected ‘Advanced Sharing’, checked ‘Share this folder’ box, and under ‘Permissions’, checked ‘Full Control’ box.
    6) Now it states Shared, and under ‘Network Path’ states the location: ‘ \\ADMIN-PC\ScantoDV9825 ’
In the HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g, Embedded Web Server to add network folder to scan to:
    1) Opened ‘Scan’ section by clicking on the tab ‘Scan’. Under ‘Network Folder Setup’, the ‘Network Folder Configuration’ clicked on ‘New’.
    2) Entered data for the following fieldsTEP 1 OF 4: Display Name: ‘Scan’, Network Path: ‘\\ADMIN-PC\ScantoDV9825’. Left User Name and Password fields blank. STEP 2 OF 4: Left PIN fields blank. STEP 3 OF 4: Did not make any changes, used default settings.
    3) In STEP 4 OF 4 when I click on Save and Test, it returns with the message ‘No write permission’
How do I resolve this issue of ‘No write permission’?
    Thank you.

    Hi Robert,
First ensure the permissions are also set correctly by right clicking the shared folder, and then open the Security tab.
If your user name is not listed as Full Control click the edit button, add your user name and check the box for as Allow full control.
If that does not help, follow these steps in Windows Vista to make sure that your computer is configured to allow network sharing.
Step one: Make sure that the computer user account is password protected
Click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Control Panel .
Click User Accounts , and then select the account you used to log into the computer.
Click Change your Windows password , and then find the user account you used to log into the computer.
If the user account is password protected , continue to the next step.
If the user account is not password protected , click Create a password for your account to create a password, and then continue to the next step.
Step two: Define the network location
Click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Control Panel .
    Click Network and Internet .
Click Network and Sharing Center .
Click Customize next to Your Network . The Set Network Location window opens.
Select Private , click Next , and then click Close .
Step three: Make sure that the network sharing and discovery options are correct
Open the Network and Sharing Center window.
In the Sharing and Discovery section, make sure that the following network options are set to On :
    Network Discovery
    File Sharing
    Public Folder Sharing (password required)
    Printer Sharing (password required)
    Password Protected Sharing
Your computer network is now successfully set to complete the Scan and Fax to Network Folder or Digital Fax to Network Folder Wizard.

  • Help needed: view option icons missing

    Hi,
There are only blank space in the bar location where my view option icons and spotlighter use to be.
But I can still click the old position and the same functions still working. It is so inconvenient
because I need to guess the choice.
Does anyone have some ideas about how to fix it?
    Thanks,

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Problem creating a link to a network folder

I am working with a SharePoint 2010 site. Due to not being able to utilize SharePoint Designer, I am limited to editing the site by first navigating to the SharePoint site and then selecting edit page from the site options menu.
I have a table setup and there are two cells within the table that I want to have linked to different network folders. The first cell has 'operations brief' in it, and after researching how to establish a link to a network folder, I learned that I could
do it by inserting a link and pointing to file://servername. In this situation, I highlighted the text and then selected insert and link from address option. I typed in
file://Y:\Operations%20Brief\2013 into the URL field. After saving the site, I tested the link and it successfully opened the network folder.
I then followed the same procedure for another network folder named Quick Reference Card. The only difference between the operations brief folder and the quick reference card folder is that the quick reference card folder has parentheses and numbers - Y:\(8)Library\Quick
Reference Card (QRC). I am not understanding why when I view the site out of editing mode, I can click on the operations brief folder and have it open. When I click the Quick Reference Card link, nothing happens. The text appears as a hyperlink -- it's in
    blue and is underlined.
I've removed the link and re-added it several times, only to get the same result. I can't figure out why one link works, and why another one doesn't even though I'm sure I created the second link the same way I created the first link.

    Hi,
I have followed the same procedure what you followed, it is working as expected and both the links are working fine.  The following is the HTML SOURCE from the content editor web part.  Please verify your HTML source from the content editor part.

  • Digial Filing, Scan to Network Folder not working on new Asus Windows 8.1 laptop

I've having difficulty setting up Digital Filing, Scan to Network Folder on my new Asus Windows 8.1 laptop. I'm using a HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g Series.
It seems to setup correctly with no errors. However, all scans end up with a zero file size PDF. Trying to open them gives the error: “Adobe reader could not open 'scan.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
I've previously had no problem setting up network folders to scan to on three other computers, all of which were running Windows 7, not 8.1. Digital Filling continues to work correctly on each of these older computers, but try as I might, I'm unable to get this feature to work with my new Windows 8.1 laptop. I've tried with both the “Solution Center” software and the embedded web access.
I've compared all the setting I could think of to the previous Network Folders that work and cannot find any differences.
The workaround, scanning from my laptop using the Solution Center software (rather from the printer console using digital filing, scan to network folder) works perfectly. As far as I can tell, all other features are working.

The STUDIO is an older laptop running Windows 7. Scanning to network folders works perfectly as long as the folder chosen is in the \Users\Public folder.
I do not know nor have not needed the Windows password on this laptop. It's been years since I set up this laptop; I don't know if it even has a password.
The ASUS is a new laptop running Windows 8.1. So far, I have been unable to scan to a network folder; all the resulting PDFs are zero bytes.
The network folders are all in Network Path: \\ASUS\Users\Public; if I try to create them outside this folder, I'm unable to even finish setting up the network scan.
I DO know the Windows username and password for this new laptop.
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: Gpaork3edrecnlau
I've compared the properties on the folders involved on the two laptops by right-clicking them. So far as I can tell, everything is set exactly the same on both computers.
Below are my experiments – the first three on my older Windows 7 laptop all work perfectly. All the rest on my new Windows 8.1 computer do not work.

  • View as icon vs. view as list

If I select "view as icon" for a finder window, it applies that setting to all the windows. Is there a way to "view as icon" in one folder, for example, and to "view as list" in another window. I remember being able to do this in 10.4 on my old laptop.

    Hey all,
I'm a long time Mac user, way back before OSX. I responded to another thread on a similar subject. It's kind of a long post, but you might find it interesting/helpful. Basically, how an old Mac user approaches the 10.5 Finder (which I've grown to really like, btw).
    Here's the thread link...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1766829&tstart=60
Here's the post I put up there...
    "Re: Global Finder Window Problems..."
This is actually the default viewing system in 10.5 (newly opened folders automatically adopting the view of any previously opened folder). I little weird at first, but read on for my take on why I think 10.5 is much nicer than 10.4 and preceding OXSs.
I started using Macs in the pre-OSX days, so was used to the completely dependable and always predictable "spatial" Finder of OS9 and down. Spatial meaning, folders all opening in new windows with every window position, view setting, icon position, even scroll bar (if there is one) remembered without exception. Also, no browser mode at all.
So I tried to recreate the old OS9 default folder view in 10.4... First, create a desktop folder, set to icon view, turn off Toolbar/Sidbar, which causes nested folders to open in their own new window. Great! Now all folders within created within that folder adopt that view, right? They do, but not if you drag one to the desktop, at that point the Toolbar/Sidebar magically reappears. It also reappears if you navigate to the same folder via Dock's cascading menu system (assuming you've placed a hard drive or folder there). Another 10.4 oddity...if you have Finder set to open at the top level "Computer" when activated from it's Dock icon, it would never remember icon size and position. Sometimes even forgetting window size/position (at least my install of 10.4 did this). On and on....life with the forgetful, stubborn OSX Finder.
However, 10.5 is fantastic at remembering folder view settings. Only thing is, that's not turned on by default. Instead, the default behavior is for folders to adopt the previous folder view setting. This is actually not a bad thing if you prefer to use the browser style navigation the Finder offers. You alter a view setting, list view for example, browse a while, then change it to icon, continue browsing, etc, etc... Thats 10.5's default behavior. To make a specific folder remember a view state, all you have to do is set the view you want, open the Show View Options and check the Always Open In... check box. Now, it will very dependably remember it's view state.
Personally, I've always had my own ideas about how the Finder should behave, and have suggested them to Apple. I've always thought there should be a separate Finder/Browser app that boots up from the Dock Finder icon. It always opens with the Toolbar/Sidebar on (ie: all folders are navigated to via a single browser window). You set it to some browser friendly view (ie: list, column), and it retains that view state as you browse no matter what view settings you may have set for an individual folder. That's the Finder/Browser. To see unique pre-folder view settings, you open the hard drive icon from the Desktop. It opens with the Toolbar/Sidebar off (ie: all folders open in new windows). You could consider this to not even being the "Finder application". Just think of it as "manually looking at the contents of the hard drive". As you drill down, opening new windows, you can create view states which are always remembered when opened via double click the hard drive from the Desktop.
I attempted to created this behavior in 10.4, but the Finder was just forgetful enough, and stubborn enough, not to cooperate fully (see explanations above). However, in 10.5 it works beautifully. I first set the Finder Preferences to open "Computer", opened the Finder via the Dock icon and set it to Column view. From re-boot to re-boot, this set up is remembered exactly, even the window size and position. This is great for browser navigation.
For "manually exploring" (or as some referred to as "spatial"), you must first tell every window on your hard drive to "Always Open In...." whatever you want you default state to be (other wise it will just open in the state in whatever the most resent folder was opened in). I created a script for this with the settings as...Toolbar/Sidebar off & icon view. I then ran the script on the entire drive, and all sub-folders. Over time, I've changed the settings of folders I want to open differently (mainly list as apposed to icon), making sure I open the View Options and rechecking "Always open in..." to whatever adjustment I made. My drive is in great order now and remembers every view detail. Any windows I don't mess with default to a completely predictable "Icon View".
So 10.5 gives me the best of both worlds. Very reliable spatial (ie: old fashion manually opening window after window....handy for dragging files around the hard drive), and super streamlined browsing...good for navigating to and opening files quickly.
My 3 cents...sorry for the long post.

  • How do I create an alias of my home folder with the little house icon to appear on my desktop, please?

In Mavericks, how do I create an alias to my home folder, complete with the little house icon, to put on my desktop, please? I can get the folder, but not with the icon.

Open Finder. Under Preferences > Sidebar > Devices > check Hard disks.
Navigate to your home folder from "Macintosh HD" (or whatever the name of your boot volume is) in the finder. Set the view to column.
Once you reach the path of your home folder, select it, hold down the key combination option + command and drag the alias to your desktop.

  • When trying to open a pdf from a shared network folder I get an error

    hello,
When trying to open a pdf from a shared network folder I get the error: 'there was an error opening this document the document cannot be found'. The share is on a Windows 7 machine and sharing to a OS X 10.7 Machine. Permisson has been given on the share for 'Everyone' read and Write, and is mapped to the 10.7 machine through the 'Connect to Server' in finder with login credentials.
    Can you help please?
    Kind regards,
    Chris

This is in Internet Explorer 6 (yes, horrible, I know), but we use a standardized image where I work, with pretty intense GPO's.
Don't know what happens if you right-click the link; but from any other machine (with the same image) the same link will open with all three options "Open", "Save", and "Cancel".  These are not freshly imaged machines, so some setting must of been changed along the way to make this happen on this user's computer.
Repaired Acrobat, but this resolved nothing.
Also checked in IE to make sure that Adobe was enabled under the Programs tab.
Also, the option to view a pdf within the browser is not turned on.
    Any other ideas?

  • Help. Can't see Volume in My Network folder!!!!!!

    Hi all,
I have a 7 G5s and 1 G4 computer, of which I upgraded to 10.4 from 10.3.9. I have updated all OS to 10.4.6. I have 2 small hubs with which I network the computers and 2 printers.
All but 1 G5 can see and access the Public folder of each computer. In each of the Public folder, I have a FULL ACCESS folder, to which you can read and write, along with the default Drop Box.
I have a problem with one of the G5s, when I try to connect to the *problem computer* from another G5, I cannot see the VOLUME in the *SELECT THE VOLUMES TO MOUNT* window. I can see the problem computer in the *My Network* folder, but not the VOLUME when I connect. *+I had no problems before I upgraded.+*
From the troubled computer, I can see and connect to all other computers on the network. I have not changed any settings on this or any of the other computers. Actually, I have no problem with none of the other computers, of which all can copy files between each other.
Has anyone ever seen this problem? It's really wierd since only one computer has the problem and all were upgraded the same time.
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance
    Willis

Several things you can try on that one G5...
Repair Permissions, (good idea after any upgrade).
Try from the Finder's Go Menu, Connect to Server, then type in afp://ip.of.other.g5
In Finder>Preferences, toggle off the Sidebar>Show Network Icon, reboot and tirn it back on.
More to try, but let's see if any of these help.
