Networked machine shows up twice in 'Shared' list within Finder

Hi ya,
ok, I have a MBP with 10.5.2 as my main machine. I also have a spare G4 Quicksilver on the same Airport network. When I open a new Finder window, in the 'Shared' list I see my G4 as both the computer name (Fonts) and as username_(fonts.local). With the first one, I can access the drive no problem but can't share the screen. With username_(fonts.local) I can only share the screen but it never connects via Screen Sharing. I can share the screen with Jolly Fast VNC.
Any ideas??

I have had the exact same issue - two or even sometimes three icons (the extras were always with a pc monitor even though there are only macs in our house). It only appeared with my brand new imac and my MBP, not my old imac. Anyway, I figured out how to get rid of it. By default, my computer named my computer my username and the added an apostrophe and computer. So, for instance, my computer was called McIntyre's iMac. I changed the name to McIntyre iMac and the problem solved itself. The networking did not like the apostrophe. I did not have parallels installed, nor windows sharing. The only thing I had on was Printer sharing - which I needed to have. I hope this works for you too, please let us know if it does!!

  • Broken Shared List in Finder

I'm on Snow Leopard (10.6.8) in a last-generation MacBook Pro and having trouble with the Shared list in Finder. A few months ago, it stopped showing the server on the network at work. I see corworker computers still and can connect via Cmd+K, but it used to detect the server and allow one-click access. It's not a major inconvenience, but I'd like to know if there's any setting I'm missing. My coworkers' computers show the server just fine. I had to install a client's VPN client around the time this issue came up, but I'm not sure that's it. Any ideas?

There is an user appearing in my finder's sidebar (under "shared") as well.
Already activated the firewall, encrypted my home folder, all connections are blocked and the sharing feature has everything unchecked. I can still see him as "my guest".
My computer warned me twice about "somebody using my IP Address" , but I'm an ordinary user. Hence, don't have any "profound" knowledge whatsoever (meaning, there are a bunch of things I don't know how to use or interpret)
I don't know what measures to take if any. Is there anything else I can do to block my uninvited guest?

  • MacBook Pro shows up twice under Shared in finder sidebar once as PC

This just started today. I have my iMac and MacBook Pro networked through Airport Extreme. Today my MacBook Pro shows up twice under my iMac finder sidebar. First icon is itself (MacBook), second icon is PC. Both with the same name. Get info shows the second icon as PC Server. I cannot connect to the PC icon, which I'm assuming is a good thing.
Why would this suddenly happen, and how do I get rid of it? I've restarted airport, repaired permissions on both machines. Checked to be sure that only AFP is check under File Sharing on both. Network preference pane WINS shows no servers connected on Airport or Ethernet, etc.
    Anyone?
Appreciate any help with this. I'm definitely not a networking expert

Ok, ive had this problem for ages and i think ive pretty much figured it out, your computer is showing your macbook over your network and through Bonjour (apples own wireless connection) Still not sure why it always shows it as a PC though, or as a server...
Anyway, I ive found where it originated from, if you go to System Preferences>Sharing, at the top you will see your computers name and underneath it will say "Computers on your local network can access your computer at:" and its name will be whatever the 'PC server' is called on your finder sidebar, in your case "tosha". You can test it by changing the name to something like "tosha1" by clicking the edit button, in may cases the extra shared computer will disappear, but, after a while it will reappear and will now have the new name. =[
Sadly I dont know how to stop this but I suggest you take screenshots and go to an apple store, tell them about the problem and hopefully they will have an answer for you, they know everything! And even if they dont, check their machines to see if they have the problem, and if they dont, look at the settings and try and find why.
Im sorry I cant be of much help but im getting closer to the bottom of this and im sure its linked to bonjour! Ill keep you posted if anything else happens!
p.s. Im not a networking expert either! Im just as stumped as everyone else!

  • Import dialog shows iPhone twice, and photo list only shows outlines

In Aperture 2.1.2 I have been able to import photos from my iPhone until just recently. Now the import dialog shows three choices of import devices/locations, Local Disk, RJH iPhone and a second RJH iPhone. If I select either iPhone the main window displays outlines of 7 images but no picture information except for the filename. If I actually try to import the pics it says 'Import completed with errors, the following files were not imported' and it lists all the filenames. One of the iPhone devices shows up in the import list EVEN WHEN THE iPHONE IS NOT CONNECTED!
I'm sure there is a plist or something that has the list of import devices bu I have not been able to find it despite extended web and support searches.
    Anyone heard of this?

OK, I have since discovered that the second iPhone device is listed only when my iPhone is plugged into a DIFFERENT USB port on my MBP. If I plug it into the same port I usually use, it is only listed one. However, both Aperture and iPhoto still see one iPhone device whether it is plugged in or not, and both show images with outlines only and won't import photos. So strange

  • Mystery computer shows up under Shared list in Finder

I’m hoping someone can help me solve a mystery…I have 2 macs (a late 2008 MBP and the most recent white MB), both connected wirelessly to a Time Capsule. From time to time, I see a computer show up under the list of Shared devices that I cannot identify. It is listed just as a MAC address and looking at Get Info tells me it’s a PC server. I have no other computers or devices connected to my network. and I also have the network protected with a password. I even changed the network password this morning, and the mystery computer still appears and disappears at random. When it does appear, I can connect to it as a Guest, but there are no folders or other content available.
Can anyone suggest what might be going on? I’m concerned that my network is compromised and that someone else has access to my files. Should I be worried and how can I fix this?
    Thank you!

It's more likely that you are seeing someone elses computer that may have sharing enabled. If you are in an apartment building or have neighbors otherwise close-by, you may just be picking up their machine. Because you see theirs does not mean that they can access yours in anyway. HOWEVER... if you see a machine appear under your shares (or otherwise) that you are not familiar with, you should NOT attempt to connect to it. Doing so could potentially compromise your system. It's not very likely... even less likely on a Mac... but it is something to avoid.

  • Removing Computers From Shared List?

Here is the problem. In our work area we have three OS X 10.4 clients running as servers for projects, these computers have file sharing turned on. We just replaced many of our older G4 towers running Tiger with new Intel iMacs running Leopard. I only want to allow the remaining G4's to access the shared computers and remove them from showing up on the new iMacs in the Shared list within finder. Should I use ACLs for this, if so does anyone have an example, and if not then what is the solution? I can't believe Apple didn't think how annoying it is to have unwanted computers showing up in your finder, as it is we have dozens already listed.
I do have access to all of the computer's IP addresses and MAC addresses if I can use those in an UNIX solution for ALLOW or DENY.

You could disable Bonjour on the file sharing computers. That will stop them from advertising their file sharing services, and thus they won't show up in the Finder sidebar of the Leopard iMacs.
You will still be able to access the file sharing services by direct connections through the "go" menu on any Mac. You will also need to manually configure any network printing associated with those Macs.
To disable Bonjour, open Terminal and enter (on one line):
    $ sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
    To re-enable Bonjour:
    $ sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist

  • MAC Address shows up in shared list

In my "shared" list on the finder sidebar, my MAC address appears as a PC server. I have all sharing options turned off in system preferences, yet this address shows up in my shared list and on the shared list of other apple users on my network. Does anyone know why this would happen?
    Thanks

    I had the same issue.
There were a couple of Parallels Desktop network services configured in one of the locations in my Network control panel. Since I had removed Parallels Desktop in favor of Boot Camp, I just removed the network service configurations for Parallels and the mysterious MAC Address labeled PC in the Shared tab of my finder windows disappeared.

  • Network in Macintosh HD does not show network machines

When I open Network via Macintosh HD (or in any other way) none of my networked machines show up.
    Instead it shows three folders:
    - Applications
    - Library
    - Users
Why is that? And how do I remedy that? I can't map my Windows shares or any other shares, so any help that allows me to correct the situation would be much appreaciated.

    Gulp!!!
    Here we go...
    Then type... cd /Network
    An ls command should show...
    bdaqua:/Network bdaqua$ ls
    Applications Library Users
    Type...
    sudo rm Applications
    sudo rm Library
    sudo rm Users
Hopefully this only removes the Symbolic Links, and not the real Directories... that's the way things are suppossed to work anyway!
Reboot and see if we fixed it.
CAUTION: sudo gives you Super Powers, and rm will remove whatever is typed after it... so you can, if not precise/careful, remove anything/everything!

  • Networked computers show up as (2)

We have a small network in our office, with every mac named after a superhero. Today one of the macs shows up in my SHARED list as BATMAN (2).
What is the "(2)" all about? Now I can't print, as the printer is connected to BATMAN and my mac can't find it.
Obviously thinks there's another computer on the network called BATMAN. How do I get rid of the (2)?
Message was edited by: John Stuart

Our networked office has had the same issue twice in the past few weeks. The workstation we use as a central server shows up with (2) after its name and is no longer recognized. We deleted the (2) through the system preferences but what causes the (2) to show up in the first place?

  • How do I remove a computer from the Shared list?

I had a support issue a few days ago and was asked by a tech-support person in another country to set up screen-sharing with him. The issue was solved pretty quickly, but ever since I have had what is presumably his computer showing up in the SHARED list in the sidebar. It's inactive, but I would rather be rid of it altogether. How do I do that?
    Many thanks in advance.

    i had the same issue
i powered the printer off and back on. It cleared the scan to list of all computers that were not on the network.

  • Managing Entries in the "Shared" list

    Hello
How can I delete the list of items showing up in the "Shared" list in the "Finder" menu? If I click on "Connect to Server" in the "Go" menu in the Finder I see some outdated entries, which I'd like to remove. Where is this list saved? The list includes some smb and afp entries that do not work anymore. I want to get rid of them.
    Thanks!

Typically these are customers of your ISP who have enabled file sharing. The connection is through your ISP connection not through your wireless network. Just because you can see them does not mean that they can see your network or access your network.
You can test this theory by disabling your wireless network. If the shared PC hangs around you know that they have nothing to do with your wireless network.
You can also disconnect your base station from your ISP connection. If the shared PC disappears, you know that the connection is coming through your ISP.

  • 'Shared' list not updating

I'm having problems with the 'Shared' list in Finder. When at home, I still see the shared places from work, but not my iMac that should come up (which is also the only one listed in the 'All...' list). How can I make Finder update the list properly?
    Best wishes,
    Johan Kåhrström

Can you provide a little more information? At work, are the other computers running Windows or OS X? Is your laptop running Windows or OS X? Do your home network and network at work have different names?
Generally speaking, Windows networks rebroadcast their share information every 12 minutes. If you woke up your computer from sleep at home, and you are using Windows shares rather than Apple ones, you might not see the shares for several minutes.
You might also want to setup a different "location" in the Network control panel for Home, if you are using Windows file shares and there's a different workgroup name used at work than at home. In that case, you would simply go to network preferences and select which setup to use (work or home).

  • Groups of Shared Lists?

    Hi
Is there any way I can put together all shared lists that I am using for specific campaigns so I will not have to exclude them manually inside a segment all the time? So it would be something like a group or a folder of shared lists.
For example I have 5 shared lists I need to exclude in each EDM campaign I am preparing.
This could be on a segment level or on a canvas level. So to exclude the 5 shared lists within a segment or within a canvas.
    many thanks

    Hi,
This is a great use for a segment template. Set up a segment with the 5 lists you want to exclude, save it as a template (from the gear menu), and then when you are ready to create a new segment, you can pick that template and automatically have the 5 lists excluded at the start. We use this method all the time - in fact most of our segment templates only have excluded lists or filters in them.
    Hope this helps,
    Richard

  • Weird name under the "Shared" of the Finder's sidebar

I have a macbook pro which is just upgraded to Lion.
It was going fine but few hours ago, a weird name that I don't know showed up under the 'Shared" of my Finder's sidebar. When I cliked it, it said "Connection failed" and disappeared. Now there is no "Shared" in the sidebar at all.
So first of all, what is this "Shared"?
And if there is another computer under "Shared", does it mean that computer can see what I'm doing or something?
Also, since it said it failed to connect, that computer wasn't connected to mine, right?
    Am I being hacked????????????
Thank you, I'm just a bit concerned with this... odd predicament that I never encountered to during my macbook experience.

So this unknown is using my network because of my insecure wireless router, but it's not like that device can look into my account?
Yes, that's a possibility.  If your wireless network does not have a password, that's the most obvious explanation.  I live in a suburban area, houses close but not too close, and I can see up to four of my neighbors' networks, depending on the day and what part of the house I'm in.  The ones that are open, I could join if I chose to.  In an apartment building, you're going to have many more people close to you, while if you live out on a farm somewhere, you probably have nobody living in range.  In any situation where you have people living (or commonly travelling) nearby, you should lock down your network with a password.
And no, that device can't hack your computer unless you have a service open in System Preferences -> Sharing.  You won't by default.  Of course, an untrusted person on your network could potentially view all your network traffic, which could be a problem.  All the more reason to lock down the network.

  • Computers Showing up twice in the network list even with Smb disabled?

I've just purchased an Airport Express and figured it was time to get the network into shape.
I've got 4 macs (MBP, MB, iMac, and PB) and one Windows box. In the sharing list, 2 of the macs show up only once, and 2 of them show up twice. I think I've sourced this to their names. Two of the computers, Peaches and Footlong have names shot enough that their sharing names match the name WINS gives them, the other 2 computers have names that are longer, Living Room iMac is an example. This appears to be an invalid WINS name so it then shows up again as Living Room iMac with a nice imac symbol, then also as MACINTOSH with a windows box icon.
If anybody knows how to get rid of this so I will only see the computers as macs and so there aren't these other non existent computers on the network, that would be great!
Also, I've tried to set up permissions on one computer that I don't have a user account on. When I try to connect using the ID i set up in its sharing preference pane, it says it's invalid, any ideas?

I think you have answered your own question. I had the same problem and when I shortened the computer's name the problem was solved.
