Networking 2 switches

Can anyone help me with this dilemma? First off, I'm not IT or networking or anything like that. I'm a soldier in the US Army that has been tasked with setting up and maintaining our detachment's network. What I'm trying to do is this: Network 15 towers together with one switch using windows workgroup (that's done, no problem) The problem I'm experiencing is using a second switch to connect 6 HP plotters together, then connect the two switches together. This is the was my superiors want it to work, so this is the way I have to do it. Unless anyone can give me a stellar reason why it shouldn't be done that way, that is. Do I need to use a crossover cable to connect the two switches together? Any help or links to a webpage that has these answers would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

Also, sometimes switches have what is called an "uplink" port, that is used to connect it to other switches without the need for a crossover cable.
If switch has MDIX, sometimes you need to switch MDIX functionality manually. It's done by connecting console cable to the switch, then typing:
enable
config t
interface fast X/X or interface gigabit X/X (issue a "show interface status" to see what interfaces are on the switch)
mdix auto
I'm assuming you have Cisco switches, if not, the configuration will definitely be different.
But you should be fine with default configuration and crossover cables.

  • Creating Logical Networks and Switches via SPF

    Hi,
Is it possible to create Logical switches and logical networks in VMM by calling SPF REST APIs. I can see only a GET API for logical networks and none for Logical switches. If they exist can someone point me to a link to the documentation?
    Thanks,
    Venky

    Hi
You can only get logical network information -
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn470018.aspx
The purpose of SPF is to be used as web service for Tenants. As logical networks and switches are objects that are maintained by administrators they cannot be managed by SPF. Logical networks have get operation because you might want to create VLAN-based
VM Networks depending on what is configured in Logical networks. For administrating logical switches and networks administrators will use PowerShell or the VMM console.

  • Sun Cluster 3.x connecting to SE3510 via Network Fibre Switch

Sun Cluster 3.x connecting to SE3510 via Network Fibre Switch
    Hi,
Currently the customer have 3 nodes clusters that are connected to the SE3510 via to the Sun StorEdge[TM] Network Fibre Channel Switch(SAN_Box Manager) and running SUN Cluster 3.X with Disk-Set.The customer want to decommised the system but want to access the 3510 data on the NEW system.
Initially, I remove one of the HBA card from one the cluster nodes and insert it into the NEW System and is able to detect the 2 LUNS from the SE3150 but not able to mount the file system. After some checking, I decided follow the steps from SunSolve Info ID:85842 as show below:
    1.Turn off all resources groups
    2.Turn off all device groups
    3.Disable all configured resources
    4.remove all resources
    5.remove all resources groups
    6.metaset s < setname> -C purge
7.boot to non cluster node, boot sx
8.Remove all the reservations from the shared disks
    9.Shutdown all the system
Now, I am not able to see the two luns from the NEW system from the format command.cfgadm al shows as below:
    Ap_Id Type Receptacle Occupant Condition
    C4 fc-fabric connected configured
    Unknown
1.Is it possible to get back the data and mount back accordingly?
2.Any configuration need to done on the SE3150 or the SAN_Manager?

First, you will probably need to change the LUN masking on the SE3510 and probably the zoning on the switches to make the LUN available to another system. You'll have to check the manual for this as I don't have these commands committed to memory!
Once you can see the LUNs on the new machine, you will need to re-create the metaset using the commands that you used to create it on the Sun Cluster. As long as the partitioning hasn't changed from the default, you should get your data back intact. I assume you have a backup if things go wrong?!

  • Hyper-V Network Virtual switches

    Hi,
    Good Day!
We have some doubts on Hyper-V Network Virtual Switches:
There are two physical NICs on a Hyper-V Host. One is connected to the public and other connects the internal VM Network. We create two virtual switches; "CustomerNetwork" and "PublicNetwork". "CustomerNetwork" has 192.168.x.x
series IP Address and "PublicNetwork" has a public IP Address.
We have also setup a software router VM with two virtual NICs. One vNIC connects to "CustomerNetwork" and other one connects to "PublicNetwork". We assign an IP address to the vNIC connected to "CustomerNetwork". The IP Address
    assigned is 192.168.2.99.
Confusion here is that we don't know which IP Address we should assign to the VNIC of router VM which is connected to "PublicNetwork". We have only one public IP Address. Shall we assign public IP Address to the VNIC of Router VM or the "PublicNetwork"
virtual switch or we should remove the public IP Address from the virtual switch?
Thank you for your time for clarifying our doubts! As always, appreciate your help!
    Thank You,
    Aurther L

On your router VM , Public IP should be assigned to Public network . Beaaware you are only allowed one external switch per hyper V host.  Alternatively Create two VNic from from Private network, Assign public IP to one and local IP to another
assuming you have internet connection on local network.
    hope this helps
    thanks

  • Use wireless router with existing network and switch?

I have an existing network using a T1 into a switch; all the computers and the server are connected to the switch. Some distance away, via ethernet cable to the switch, I would like to connect a wireless router, one computer wired to that router, and other computers connect via wireless. Our server provides DHCP. Is this possible? How best to do it? Which Linksys router would be best for the purpose? Thanks for the help!

The "correct" device to use would be a wireless access point like the Linksys WAPs and not a WRT router. WRT routers are supposed to connect to the internet on its own.
You can set up a WRT router as simple access point. see here for the setup.
The best router is the one which best suits your needs. All wireless routers and access point provide wireless access. It depends on what you want (802.11n, 11b, 11g, range, speed, etc.). The newer routers are better from the specifications but usually also have more firmware bugs. But that's pretty much all one can say based on your generic requirements.

  • Network keeps switching to Apple Net work

How can I prevent the wireless from switching from my network to Apple Network. When trying to connect to internet I find that my network has been changed
to Apple Network. Never experience any thing like it. Can somebody explain what's causing it?

Sounds like you are still set to the Apple demo network from the Apple Store.
You can check and remove this by:
System Preferences > Network > select 'Wi-Fi' from the left hand pane > select 'Advanced...'
Here you will see a list of preferred wireless networks.
Click to drag and drop and re-arrange the order of these networks; you will need to make sure your primary network is listed at the top, if it is not, the device will attempt to find and connect to the network that is.
Click to highlight a network from the list, then remove it from the list using the minus '-' button.
Click OK, if and when prompted, click apply changes.
Let me know if this works.

  • Network Mode Switch No Longer Possible After Upgrade

Hello. I can't switch from 3G/H+ to 2G any longer. I could do this when I still had the OS 7.0 running on my Torch 9810 (AT&T). This changed after I upgraded to the OS 7.1. Now, when I go to the "Networks and Connections" option, all I see is "Manual and "Automatic"...I don't see any options to switch between 2G or 3G/H+...Even when I try switching manually to 2G (selecting 2G from the list of available networks), it still stays on 3G/H+...I have just upgraded to the latest official release: OS 7.1 Bundle 1997 (7.1.0.694 , Platform 5.1.0.507) but still, there are no changes on that. I need to have this feature because staying put on 3G/H+ means faster battery consumption and I don't want that. Please, your assistance is needed. Thanks.

1.On the home screen, click the connections area at the top of the screen, or click the Manage Connections icon.2.
Click Networks and Connections > Mobile Network.•
To connect to CDMA networks only, set the Network Technology field to 3G.•
To connect to either a GSM or CDMA network, set the Network Technology field to Global.•
To connect to GSM networks only, set the Network Technology field to GSM/UMTS. To optimize network coverage, set the Network Mode field to one of the following: 2G & 3G or 2G & 3G/4G or 2G & 3G/H+. The options that appear in the Network Mode field depend on your wireless service provider.

  • Network user switching from log in screen in Mavericks

I have an iMac set up for network users, but I can't seem to figure out how to switch users from the login screen after a time out screen lock. That is, if I'm logged on to the machine, and walk away from it and it autmatically locks the screen, how can another network user log on at that point? This seems like it should be a pretty basic feature, like it is in (stupid) Windows.
    I'm running:
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.1
    iMac (2013) 2.7 GHz

    Hi,
    i am experiencing smiliar problem:
Sep 21 23:09:40 Xserve slapd[40]: SASL [conn=143] Failure: GSSAPI Error: Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more information (No principal in keytab matches desired name)
    Sep 21 23:15:41 Xserve slapd[40]: <= bdbsubstringcandidates: (authAuthority) index_param failed (18)
several times - every time a user from a Mac (iMac with Intel processor and 10.5.8 OS X) tries to log in.
Remark: There are some windows-Workstations that login on Active Directory and work fine!
Does anyone have some ideas how to solve that problem?
    Thanks!

  • Airport Self Assigned IP after Network Diagnostic Switched PPPOE

When I was at school the other day I used the network diagnostic to connect to a pppoe network and clicked the "Show pppoe in menu bar" button. When I got home I tried to find that setting again to remove it from the menu bar and ended up going to network diagnostic and telling it my home network was pppoe so I could uncheck the box. Then I switched it back to DHCP and it will no longer get an IP! It just says self-assigned IP no matter what I do.
    Tried:
Setting the firewall to allow all connections
Deleting the com.apple.airport.preferences.plist file and restarting
    rebooting all the network hardware
I'm convinced it was the diagnostic switch that did this, it's actually happened to me once before in the same situation.
    Any suggestions?

The "yellow" ball or dot usually means you do not have an Internet connection, either by Wifi or Ethernet.
You mentioned something about the "computer in error". Are you trying to hook-up the iPad to the Internet thru your computer? You do know the iPad usually talks wireless to your router, right? Or are you trying to share the Airport/Internet on the computer with your iPad? DId you go into Systems Preferences/Sharing and set Internet Sharing?

  • Assignment of network cards switches each boot (bizarre).

I'm working from a dell inspiron laptop which has both an ethernet port and a wifi card, which are registered as eth0 and eth1.  I have no problems configuring rc.conf and related etcs to get the wireless card to work (no driver problems or anything), but they switch names each boot.  Has anyone had this problem/ know why it would happen? I can confirm that all I need to do in order to get network running is switch all references of eth0 to eth1 (or eth1 to eth0) and /etc/rc.d/network restart in order to get online (as I am right now).

  • Doesn't automatically join my default network after switching to WEP security and 10.9.1 OSX

I needed to change my security settings to work with my Verizon router and Airport for streaming to be WEP.  Ever since I've done that my MacBook Pro can wake up and reconnect to the network bit my iMac cannot, the network needs to be selected.  Both are running 10.9.1 and both use WEP. Can't figure out why that's the case.

I intially had it set to WPA-2, but when I tried setting up Airport Express connected to my AV receiver to stream music, I couldn't set it up.  I needed to switch over to WEP.  I will try it again though and see if Verizon can help.  Thanks Donald Morgan

  • Game server, home network, SD2005 switch, need to add wireless...

OK, I have my cable modem going directly to game server (PC running windows xp as game host), PC has 2 NIC's. Second NIC goes to SD2005 switch to 2 home gaming PC's, printer, playstation 3. Goal was to have gaming server direct access to internet.... Allow our PC's to access games without going outside intranet.  How do I hook up WRT310N to the sd2005 and then run the Printer, Playstation3 off the WRT310N???   Or am I making this way to complicated???lol
I also have a ethernet hookup for a workbench too that I swap out connections on the SD2005 for repairing PC's...
    So, In a nutshell
    PC gaming host
    2 gaming PC's
    Ethernet printer
    Ethernet Playstation3
    Ethernet connection to workbench
Need to add the WRT310N v2 to get wireless
Need gigabit access to internet for all but printer & Playstation
    Have SD2005 gigabit switch
1 gaming PC needs access to website host for FTP without all the security problems (which has been a pain with Vista)
SO, WHAT WOULD YOU DO.... I know just enough to make a mess...lol

As you want the game server directly connected to your internet connection it must operate as your internet gateway for all other devices. For that, you have to enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the game server. Use the Windows wizard to set it up. Share the internet netconnection from the 1st NIC to the LAN on the 2nd NIC. Of course, with this kind of setup your game server must be up and running whenever you want to use your LAN.
Your game server will use static IP 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on the 2nd NIC and provides DHCP.
Now connect the SD2005 to the 2nd NIC. Wire another computer to the SD2005 and it should get an IP address 192.168.0.* and should have internet through the game server.
Set up the WRT as simple wireless access point. Wire a computer to a LAN port of the WRT. Open the web interface http://192.168.1.1/ Now change the LAN IP address of the WRT from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.254 and turn off the DHCP server. Save settings. You'll loose the connection. Unplug the computer. Now wire one of the LAN ports of the WRT to the SD2005. Do not use the internet port of the WRT!
That's it. Don't forget to configure the wireless on the WRT through the web interface now at http://192.168.0.254/
Your LAN computers can access the game server directly on the LAN IP address 192.168.0.1 or through its public IP address.

  • Win 7 PC freeze and block network access for other PC on same switch during windows update from WSUS

    Hello,
It's been a problem for me for a long time now, but the last time (today) I found 3 PC on 2 different switches that block all the network on this 2 switches during the update.
I have a Domain with 80 PC with Win 7 (32&64bit) that takes the updates from the WSUS server that is configured on a Win2k8 r2. The system works well from 2 years from now but sometimes cause this errors that make me look like a dummy in front of angry
employees. If one of the PC get freeze , it will cause lost of connection on all the PC on same switch, and i have to find the blocked PC, remove from network, restart switch and hope that they will came back on.
Does anyone experienced this problem? Any help will be appreciated
    Thank you!
List of updates for today below

    Hi
Thanks for your response, yes I understand that the result is a Broadcast Storm and yes I have the cheapest switch on market :/.
The interest fact is that on one PC, I changed everything and keep only the old HDD and on last updates yesterday it was one of the blocked one too. So this make
me doubt that is something wrong in software on that PC. I don't have any third-part programs except browsers and all have Genuine Win7
The only investigation remained is what happens during the update process?
    Is WSUS involved in something?
And another thing is the fact that some of the PC are cloned, but I have carefully changed the SID
    Thank you for your support

  • Switching between office network & home adsl modem

Small problem. Is it possible for my iBook to automatically detect whether I'm connected to either my office network or my home USB adsl modem? At present, I have to manually go into System Preferences/Network and switch from one to the other and then perform a re-start. Obviously a real pain! There must be an easier way.

    Hi there
I don't think that the iBook will able to switch automatically between the two networks depending on where you are. The easiest solution, in my opinion, is to set up two locations in your network preferences, one for home and one for office. Once the two locations are set up then all you need to do to switch between them is to go to the apple menu in the finder and you should see a 'Location' submenu where you can select either the home or office setups without having to go into system preferences. Hope this helps.
