Networking a lexmark 5470 between mac 10.3.9 and windows xp

I have installed a lexmark 5470 on my mac bw g3 and it works fine. I can not share this printer with my windows xp laptop. I have gone through all the hints and tricks to share this printer using CUPS but nothing works. Lexmark tech staff inform me that it is not possible to share the printer between two differant operating systems. It can be shared if both machines use the same operating system. Has anyone had this experience and figured out a way to get it to work?
G3 B&W   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Just another case where Tech Support people don't
understand the basic technology (I'd be willing to
bet they spent real money training those guys on
Windows-only stuff).
http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3000.html
Please make note of the requirement to NOT use the
lexmark driver on Windows. Mac printer queues expect
to receive postscript input. So use a postscript
driver on the PC (Apple Color LaserWriter XX drivers
are included in WinXP and are a good choice).
Thanks for this tip. I have followed the instructions at ifelix but they do not work with this printer. I can see a print command received by the printer utility but nothing happens. Is anyone else able to share a lexmark between a mac and an xp machine? Is this a problem with this printer model or all lexmark printers?

AirDrop transfer between Mac mini (late 2012) and MacBook Pro (late 2008) works only one way.  I see both machines on both airdrop windows. Firewalls on both machines are set exactly the same way, and with Network Browser set to allow.  Can send a file from Mac mini to MacBook, but not the other way.  Never get a window asking to accept on the Mac mini.
Found no useful documentation on AirDrop anywhere in the whole support site.

Maybe this will work. From an Apple support article.
You can also use the Share button to send files to your neighbors via AirDrop. In a Finder window, select the item you want to share, and then click the Share button in the toolbar. For more information about the Share button, see this help topic:

  • HT1604 Is there any difference between Mac OS Extended Format and ExFat?

Is there any difference between Mac OS Extended Format and ExFat?  I read in a blog that the ExFat was a good way to format an external drive because it avoided many of the pitfalls of the other formats, as long as it is supported by the operating system.  I tried to format my new Seagate drive, and got an invalid option error.  I was able to format it in Mac OS Extended format.  Can you please tell me if this is similar to ExFat.  Thanks.

The Mac OS format can only be natively read to and written to by a computer running the Mac OS. This creates a problem if the user wishes his external, or other drive to have seamless compatibility between two different OS's, such as Windows and Mac. Yes, there are software solutions that enable a Windows PC to work with a drive formatted as Mac OS, but it gets complicated if you wish that drive to have compatibility "on the fly" with any PC you may encounter.
It turns out that the format known as ExFAT is able to be natively read by both a Mac and a PC, without running any additional drivers on either machine. ExFAT also doesn't have some of the limitations of FAT32, which both OS's will also read/write.
ExFAt is not perfect though. Formatting the drive as Mac OS Extended has some advantages on a Mac. First, it is the only format that permits all functionality of the Mac OS, such as using the drive for Time Machine.
ExFAt is often thought of as the best middleground for an external partition/drive that needs to have easy cross platform compatibility between a Mac and  PC running Vista or Windows 7.

  • Difference between mac pro early 2008 and 2008

What is the difference between mac pro early 2008 and 2008? There are specs warning me it won't work on early 2008 but it will on 2008 models when I'm looking for components to buy. Is this true?

    Not true.
There is 3,1, there was nothing else.
you can pull up Apple Support Mac Pro specs easy enough and tell by RAM speed and other items - or go to Everymac.com even.
All we need and what you could have done is taken the top line of System Profile that tells the model.

For NTFS on Mac, there are both open-source and commercial solutions. See:

  • SMB Network Share Access slow (MAC OS X SL and Windows 2008 Server)

    Hi,
I've added some iMacs with 10.6 to the Active Directory. This works totally fine. Anyways, I have some trouble, when accessing shares on my network. I found out, that some problems came up, because my network name was XXX.XXX.local I changed the Domain name of the Active Directory, but still the problems exist:
When opening the finder, Open Office or Microsoft Word on the Mac and browsing through files and folders, it sometimes takes up to 30 seconds and more, until the content of a folder appears... I already tried ADmitMac from Thursby, but it didn't seem to fix this problem. When accessing the shares from a Windows machine, they run pretty fast. Any idea?

I too have the exact same problem and need to figure it out soon. Very slow response times. It seems the server is getting over utilized (look at your resource monitor).
    Current configuration are:
MAC OS 10.6.4 using a Windows 2008x64 as a file server. Clients are connecting via SMB.
    Whats the common denominator here?
Our users are using Adobe InDesign 3. When users open the file located on the server and submits a print job directly to the printer, the InDesign links ( some files contain around 100 ) reach back to the server to reference the file before it prints. This may be why the server's resources are heavily affected and may be the reason why it may cause slow response times for other MAC users who try and save, open or copy files from / to the server. We have not found a soultion and all things mentioned here including the internet links did not work. We are still testing other variables (copy the Indesign files locally to detemine if print times decrease, etc. Any comments appreciated.

  • AirDrop between Mac earlier than 2012 and iOS.. I can't believe it..

    Yes, I know:
"In order to transfer files between a Mac and an iPhone, IPad or iPod touch, your iOS device needs iOS7 or later installed and your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model."
Is a MacBook Pro late 2011 really so obsolete?
    No solutions?
    I think it's embarrassing..

It’s not obsolete, but they couldn’t install a piece of hardware in a 2011 Mac that was first available in that same year. Airdrop between iOS and OS X requires Bluetooth 4.0. With about a year lead time on production, the module wasn’t available for your Mac.
Google around and you might find a way to hack your Mac to make it work, if it matters that much.

  • Mac OS 10.8 and Windows 8

I posted to a thread yesterday asking if the latets update addresses getting the client agent on these OSs buit the trhead is gone now. Can anyone verify that they have the ZEN client functional on Mac mountain lion and windows 8 please?

    swampppppppppy,
ZCM 11.2.2 added support for Mountain Lion (10.8), and 11.2.3a has support for Windows 8.
I'd suggest having a look at the release notes for the aforementioned versions as there are some features (especially for Windows 8) that are not available yet (such as Full Disk Encryption).

  • Mac OS Snow Leopard and Windows XP Installation

Recently I got Snow Leopard and I installed it successfully. Then I used Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows XP which also worked fine but when I restarted, by default it was starting in Windows rather than in Mac OS. Secondly, in Windows, I could not see any wireless or internet connections or options for that. Hence I thought of re-installing the OS. When I am trying to do it, first I wanted was to wipe out the Windows partition. To do this, when I wanted to use Boot Camp Assistant, it says, "Update your System Software before using this assistant". Whats this and how to do it? All I want is to just format the whole HDD and reinstall Snow Leopard and then Install Windows XP. But as I could not run Boot Camp Assistant, I cant wipe out the Windows Partition and hence cant move farther. Would one assist me on this?

If you hold the option key down while starting up the machine, you should be able to choose which partition you want to boot from. But before erasing everything, you may just need to install the drivers for WindowsXP and everything will work. Boot into Windows and then insert your Snow Leopard disc into the drive. It should auto-run the installation of all your drivers and get everything running right for you. Post back if we can assist more!

  • Trying to do home sharing between OSX 10.5.6 and Windows 7.

My main music collection is on my Windows 7 machine since I have about 2.5 terabytes of storage on this machine. When I open iTunes 9.0 from my mac and go to Home Sharing I can see my home computer and I can connect to it. I can also see my wife Vista machine and connect to it. From my home PC I can see my wifes Vista machine and can connect to it but with my Mac I'm only able to see it, if I click on it to connect I get the "The shared library "my library" is not responding (-3259). I also get this error when I try to connect to the Mac from my wifes Vista machine. I enabled music sharing in iTunes on the mac, enabled file sharing and also ensured the firewall is allowing all incoming connections. I disabled the firewall on the home pc and also opened up port 3689 on my router as that's what the error message suggests.
Any other advice you could provide?

Yes, it does. Right to where I am supposed to log in, but since the USB is not working (either mouse or keyboard), I'm stuck. I have to shut down and restart and boot into windows.

  • What is the difference between Microsoft Speech API Dsktop and Windows Runtime versions?

There is a text-to-speach funtionality on Windows Desktop and on Windows RT and Windows Phone. I want to know what is the difference of TTS APIs (SAPIs)?

    Hi TIKSN,
Based on your description, it seems that you want to know the difference of the TTS APIs among the Windows Desktop and Windows Store/Phone app. If so in Windows Desktop it uses this
System.Speech.Synthesis APIs to implement the text-to-speech function. But in Windows Phone Runtime and Windows Store 8.1, it uses the
Windows.Media.SpeechSynthesis APIs to implement the text-to-speech function.
For the difference between the "Windows.Media.SpeechSynthesis" and "System.Speech.Synthesis", please try to check the reply which posted by @Rob Caplan - MSFT in here:

  • How do I sync calendars between Mac (OS10.6.8) and iPad (iOS7.1)? using iTunes (v 11.1.15).

I have an iMac (model 8.1, OS X v 10.6.8) and an iPad 2 (iOS 7.1).  The calendars no longer sych via iTunes but did about 6 months ago. I think that may have been when I updated the iPad OS.  None of the instructions I've seen on-line seem to help. When I attach the iPad to the iMac via a USB cable I get the following message in iTunes - > Info - >Sych Calendars, "Your calendara are being synced with your iPad over the air from iCloud. Over the air settings can be changed on your iPad."  I do not have an iCloud account.  According to the Apple Support website, "To use iCloud, you must have at least iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPad, or iPad mini; or at least OS X Lion v10.7.5 on a Mac." I'm not sure my iMac can support that OS due to its age.  Besides, I used to be able to sync the calendars so why bother with iCloud?  It just seems like one more step.
Also, I've never been able to sych the mail content between the two machines.  The message below the iTunes->iPad->Info ->Sync Mail Accounts says, "Syncing Mail Accounts syncs your account settings, but not your messages...."  Any instructions on how to sync the messages would be appreciated too.
It's frustrating to have these syncing challenges.  I had a Palm Pilot at work about 15 years ago and and it synced with the PC any time I put it into the docking cradle.  Same thing with a work-issued Blackberry about 10 years ago.  I'm disappointed that the Apple systems seems to be so convoluted and un-user friendly.  Syncing calendars worked when I orginally got the iPad about two years ago but now doesn't seem to sych.  What am I missing?  Thanks in advance.

    Hi crispinfromab,
If you are having issues syncing your calendars via USB, you may find the following articles helpful. If you do not have an iCloud account or don't intend to use it for syncing, you may also want to make sure that iCloud syncing is turned off on your phone (under Settings > iCloud).
