Networking a Mac and a PC on the same ethernet... possible?

I recently ordered high speed internet from RCN and requested that they set up all 3 computers in the home... they showed up with a single user modem and said it would be $90 for them to set the other two up! Now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to network the computers... and I'm not the most computer literate person!
We are using an E Mac and my powerbook G4 and later will have my home built PC (not to worry about right now).
I bought a router with up to 5 computer connections. I connected the modem into slot #1, my roommates PC into slot #2, and my airport into slot #3 (I'm leaving the 3rd computer off for now). When her computer was off or disconnected from the router my airport works and I get connection, however, when she turned her computer on it wasn't connecting. So we unplugged my airport and her PC had connection. Then when we plugged my airport back in I had no connection.
I'm new to Mac's and have no idea what I'm doing wrong or what I should be doing. I tried calling for assistance but after being hung up on by the machine multiple times and then waiting 45 minutes after it said 8 minutes or less I hung up.
Someone please help! I have the connection for now so you can reach me at AIM - xxpinkcouturexx or reply to this post.

Andrea,
The modem gets wired into the WAN port not slot #1. The computers get wired into the LAN ports (slots). Shut the power on all equipment. Connect all equipment. Power up in this sequence; modem, wait 30 seconds; router, wait 30 seconds; then power up each computer.

  • HT1284 Can I back up my Mac and my pc to the same external hard drive?  If so, could you explain how? Thanks.

Can I back up my Mac and my pc to the same external hard drive?  If so, could you explain how? Thanks.  I am a new user with mountain lion.

You could partition the drive into 2 partitions.  One formatted as HFS+ for Mac OS X back, and one formatted as NTFS for Windows backup.
You would have to move the drive from system to system to do your backups.  If there are 2 systems, I would suggest just getting separate drives for each, unless they are both laptops, then you will be disconnecting the drives all the time anyway.
Unless Windows is running in a virtual machine on your Mac.  Then a partitioned drive would be fine.

You likely have iCloud turned on in at least Safari. If you don't want Safari to sync between these devices turn one of them off. System Preferences - iCloud - Safari (uncheck the box)

  • Using a mac and a pc in the same case

I realize that this is probably not the best category for this but I am going to put it in here anyways. I run a mac at home, and a pc at work. I recently needed to bring work home when I realized that I needed to run a PC only application. As the week went on, I had to start bringing my PC CPU so that I could finish the work at home. I wanted to know if it was possible to put a mac hard drive and a pc hard drive (and the motherboards and all the other parts) into the same case. Also, if it is possible, I would like to know where I could buy the parts online. Thank You

You can buy separate components for a Windows only PC, but buy the time you do that and cram them into a case with Mac components, why not just buy a new iMac and get the best of both worlds? If you're on a budget, buy a Mac mini instead. Unless you do a lot of serious research and understand computer hardware well, you are not likely to build a better PC than you can buy off the shelf for less money.
You can install Boot Camp on the iMac and than Windows XP. Note though that you will need a full copy of Windows XP SP 2. A copy that came with another computer will not work; it has to be a fully licensed copy.
Just stop by any store in your area that sells Macs to see what your options are.

  • Can I use Lightroom on my mac and my pc at the same time with only one subscription?

    Hello everyone,
for five months now I have a Creative Cloud subscription for Lightroom and Photoshop. Till now I was just using it on my PC. Now I've bought me a MAC and would like to install Lightroom on the MAC either. Do I need a second subscription for MAC or can I use my subscription on the MAC and PC simultaneously?
    thx for feedback

If you are asking if you can be running the subscription software on the two machines at the same time, the answer to that is no.  Per your license you can only be using one of the installations at a given time.
If you are asking if you can have the software installed and capable of being used on both machines then the answer is yes... you just cannot have both machines in use  running the subscription software at the same time.

  • Indesign CC for Mac and PC are not the same?

I have creative cloud on a Mac and a PC. I cannot open the Mac Indesign files on the PC and it's frustrating. The whole point of getting Adobe CC was to be able to work on both platforms. The Mac version of Indesign is showing as 9.2.1 and the PC version is showing as 8.0.2. If you're never going to get the PC version the same, how can I revert the Mac back down to 8.0.2 so the files will be interchangeable?

I just saw where CC is only available for Windows 7 and higher and I am NOT upgrading XP so CS6 is all I can have on the PC. I'm downloading CS6 for the Mac now, so from now on my files should work on both.

  • Syncing a Blackberry to a MAC and a PC at the same time

Does anyone know if you can sync a Blackberry 8800 to a MAc and a PC running Vista at the same time? I have a MAC at home and a PC at work and would like to be able to sync them both to my, as my niece calls it, Blueberry.
    Has anyone tried this before?
    Thanks.
    Molly

This sounds like a logistical nightmare... what would happen if your PC and your MAC didn't have the same exact information? Would it delete the PC info and add the MAC info and vice-versa?
You might want to use the Google package for e-mail and calendar... since it's totally web-based your information would remain the same whether you access it via Blackberry, MAC, or PC.

  • I'd like to sync two videos and edit them at the same time, possible?

I've recently recorded a conference speaker with a camera and a screen capture of his slides I'd like to import the two video files and sync them together (they received the same audio feed) then perform very basic edits of removing any intro before the speaker and the q&a after his talk. Any tips on making this as easy as possible would be greatly appreciated. I need to have a copy of each video (headshot and screen capture) that is the same length.

Here is the user manual about creating and editing Multicam clips.

  • Can a Mac and a Win share the same music library on an external?

I have a Powerbook, my wife a Toshiba laptop, both are authorized under my account. She's relatively new to iTunes and ipod so she has a small library on her Win machine. My Itunes library has grown so large I'm about to move it to an external drive. I'd like her to be able to access that library to load her ipod.
Is it a matter of formatting the external the correct way?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Interesting question!
I think the answer is FAT32, but I'd rather you tried NTFS first.

  • Why can't you Fullscreen both Mac and Thunderbolt display at the same time?

The plan was to movies in the background while I  surf the internet... Not have a grey screen. WARNING! If you're considering purchasing a Thunderbolt display... I'm warning you. You can't use the Thunderbolt in fullscreen and still use your Mac!
This is the worst purchase I've ever made- Exactly WHAT am I supposed to do with this Thunderbolt display, charge some iPhones? Why won't it do the very thing I bought it for? Windows has had this capability since XP!!! I sear, if I can't figure out some kind of "hack" to make this piece of junk work: I'M TAKING IT BACK!

You can't use the Thunderbolt in fullscreen and still use your Mac!
    You can with VLC.
    <http://www.videolan.org>
Make sure Mirroring is disabled in the Arrangement tab of Displays system preference.
Select the Thunderbolt display for full screen in VLC's Video preference.

  • Is there a way of getting a "schedule view" in iCal on a mac and on iPad in the same way you can get one on iPhone?

IS there a way to get a schedule view of events on a busy day in iCal on the iPad 2 Air and on the Macbook Pro?  I can get this view on an iPhone.

I am paranoid that some untrusted technician is going to make a copy of my music (11,000 tracks) or share some of my personal information (scanned copies of my birth certificate, passport, certificates, photos, etc.) on the web.
If you put your info into the computer and hand it to another, you have to assume they will copy everything.
Why are you putting scanned copies of valuable identity information into a computer than can be hacked, stolen, lost or compromised by a dirty tech?
    Have you lost your mind?
Is there a way of finding out what activity has taken place whilst they've had it in their possession?
No. The tech would just deny it if he did, or tell the truth which the answer would be "NO" in either case.
The employer won't ask that sort of questions without solid proof, less they make a enemy of the employee and/or risk being sued for defamation of character.
It's not like they bother to have a team of people watching over his shoulder that he doesn't stick a USB thumb drive of your data into his pocket to take home.
I am paranoid that some untrusted technician is going to make a copy of my music (11,000 tracks)
If it's iTunes music, it has your personal ID embedded into the song files. Most IT techs know this though.
I appreciate any advice you guys can offer.
Too late now, all you can do is not worry about it.
Take your personal info out of the machine and if you need it, burn cd/dvd copies, a few USB thumb drives, Iron Keys or self encrypting external storage drives with key and/or keypad.

  • EHP7 Upgrade and BW Upgrade at the same time - possible?

    Hello everyone,
we are currently planning to upgrade our ERP system from EHP 5 to 7 and BW from NetWeaver 7.3 EHP 1 to 7.4. NetWeaver and Kernel will also obtain an upgrade.
Is it possible to do the ERP and BW upgrades in one business downtime or are there any best practices which are recommended?
    Regards,
    Tobias Prein

    Hi Tobias,
Is it possible to do the ERP and BW upgrades in one business downtime
Technically it is possible. You can have 2 different set of basis team working on each of these upgrades.
    AS per best practise
Upgrade has to be done first on a copy of Production system ( to identify potential issues which may appear on Production). This will be followed by dev, QAS and finally production.
    Regards,

  • Setting up a small business network using mac and windows pcs

Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.
Research Knowledge Base for network problems that pertain to the OS that is currently installed on your computer.   See these basic networking KB Articles:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401 AirPort troubleshooting guide
