Networking a Mac and a pc to share internet.

Hello,
I have a pc that is running a wireless connection using windows xp and I have a Mac running Leopard. I have them connected but I would like to use the internet on my Mac through the pc. Does anyone know what I need to do to set this up. I haven't changed any settings yet cause I didn't really know where to begin. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

Some posters have recommended VNC. VNC is a good option if you want to control one machine from another. From reading your post, I think you are describing the need for sharing....
I do this quite a bit, and it is easy. In OS X and Windows, there is the ability to "share" an internet connection. All you need is an ethernet cable. In OS X, there is an option in the Sharing preference for "Internet Sharing". Basically, the computer creates an internal network on the shared interface. If the computer with the internet connection has a wireless connection, you will need to enable sharing on the ethernet interface and then connect the 2nd computer with an ethernet cable. Vice versa also works. The Mac (or PC) will create a private internal network on the shared interface, and act as a DHCP server. I have not done this in Windows in quite some time, but I remember that it is not difficult, and the options can be found in the network settings. You just need to remember that you can't share the connection out the same way that it comes in. Wireless can share to ethernet, and ethernet can share to wireless. They can not share to the same type of connection.
My father has an iMac G5 hooked to a cable modem. When I visit, I set his iMac to share the connection through the wireless card. The Mac then acts as a DHCP server and router. The only hassle to this setup is the OS X firewall. I had to open ports for the internal network before everything worked flawlessly. At home, I set OS X up to share its wireless connection through ethernet. This allows me to hook up computers with no wireless cards to the network through the Mac.
Good luck!
Steve

Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.

No, I made sure nothing was checked for that section when i found out he could see my screen. At the top it says "computers on your local network can access your computer at: blah blah". I think thats how hes doing it but i dont know how to fix it.

  • I am unable to share files satisfactorily over my home network between Mac and Windows

    Please advise.
I have an iMac with a LaCie Thunderbolt external hard drive and a Windows 7 laptop connected via ethernet network to a Belkin router with a WD MyBook Live Duo attached to it via USB.   The iMac also has a virtual PC in it using VMWare.
I have never been able to get file sharing to work satisfactorily across the network.
From the iMac, which is now running Yosemite, I can access the laptop and the external hard drive fine, but connections to the WD network drive are very slow and unreliable.
From the laptop, I can access the iMac and the WD network drive OK but while the LaCie share formatted for windows is visible, I am unable to open the individual files.
I was advised that I need a server.  I have therefore bought and installed OS X Server on my Mac but I don't understand it and have absolutely no idea what to do to make it work.  I open the LaCie share for example and cannot change anything - I get the message " 'Ignore ownership on this volume' is turned on for the volume containing the Share Point.  All permissions will be ignored.  This can be turned off in the 'Get info' window in the Finder."  Except it can't, because there is no such option in that window.
I can find no help  anywhere for this.  Please tell me how I set my network up so that files can be shared freely across it.

  • Creating network between Mac and Linux

Hello guys! I need to set up network between my iMac and Ubuntu linux. iMac is connected in internet by Airport and Fon Wifi Router witch is connected in router which is connected to adsl -modem. My pc is connected directly to router. Both computers have access to internet. Is there any easy solutions to share files with mac and linux? I don't need any webservers etc, I just want to share files.
Other question related to this, why is my mac's ip address like 192.168... and linux ip addrress is 84.250...?
    Thanks allready!

Though I'm not newbie with computers, I'm really confused becouse I haven't set up network like this never before.
Not a problem, no worry... we all know something somebody else doesn't and vice versa.
My linux says that my DHCP -IP is 193.210.18.18, is that related to this in any way?
Yes, if the Mac had an IP of 193.210.18.x, (but not 18 for x), then connection would be simple, but I think we must have two devices passing out IPs. What is the Mac's IP again?

Do you have any advice where I could start looking from the right IP of my linux?

I'm not sure if its even configurable.

  • Networking a Mac and a PC on the same ethernet... possible?

I recently ordered high speed internet from RCN and requested that they set up all 3 computers in the home... they showed up with a single user modem and said it would be $90 for them to set the other two up! Now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to network the computers... and I'm not the most computer literate person!
We are using an E Mac and my powerbook G4 and later will have my home built PC (not to worry about right now).
I bought a router with up to 5 computer connections. I connected the modem into slot #1, my roommates PC into slot #2, and my airport into slot #3 (I'm leaving the 3rd computer off for now). When her computer was off or disconnected from the router my airport works and I get connection, however, when she turned her computer on it wasn't connecting. So we unplugged my airport and her PC had connection. Then when we plugged my airport back in I had no connection.
I'm new to Mac's and have no idea what I'm doing wrong or what I should be doing. I tried calling for assistance but after being hung up on by the machine multiple times and then waiting 45 minutes after it said 8 minutes or less I hung up.
Someone please help! I have the connection for now so you can reach me at AIM - xxpinkcouturexx or reply to this post.

    Andrea,
The modem gets wired into the WAN port not slot #1. The computers get wired into the LAN ports (slots). Shut the power on all equipment. Connect all equipment. Power up in this sequence; modem, wait 30 seconds; router, wait 30 seconds; then power up each computer.

  • Setup wireless network for mac and pc with Airport Express?

    Mac Mini/OSX/10.8.2/Airport Express
    Question,
I have my AIrPort Express setup for my Mac Mini and I have dell computer that I want to share the wireless network. Is it possible to setup a wireless network with my mini and the pc using only the AirPort Express? Is the Airport Express a wireless router?
    Thanks,

If your Mac Mini is connecting to the Express using wireless, then this confirms that the device is working correctly.
The Express is a wireless router that can support up to 10 wireless connections, so your Dell computer should be able to connect assuming that its wireless card is working correctly, and the Dell indentifies the network and enters the correct wireless network password.
If you are having difficulty with the Dell PC connecting, this Windows troubleshooting document might help:

  • Some Adivice With Networks on Mac and PC

    Hi everyone,
This is the scenario. I have a wireless modem / router with four ethernet slots at the back for wired connections if desired. There is a desktop PC running windows XP whih connects to the internet through the router with an ethernet cable. I also have two laptops, one running windows xp and the other, a MacBook Pro. I want to wirelessly share files between both laptops. I have tried setting up a home wireless network using the windows wireless network wizard but ain't getting much luck. How do i set up a network using the Mac instead and then see if i can pick that up on the PC? Or is there an alternative way to sort this out? All suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

If both the MBP & the PC laptop are connected, wirelessly, to the router, you can easily share files between the two. The following iFelix site has lots of useful information for just what you're looking for. Just look under the heading "Sharing Files."

  • Networking 2 Macs and a PC Problems on Leopard

first of all I wana downgrade now I think. Since installation of Leopard, its been one problem after another. I want to perform a simple home network where I've got three mac computers and a PC in my house all on my wireless network. Firstly, I have done everything possible. I was sooo easy and straigth forward on Tiger but leopard, its a nightmare! System freezes and Internet disconnects now and then. I wanted MAC OS X not MACROSOFT OS X... can somebody please help? I think the frendship between Apple and Intel needs serious thinking about as it appears as if I and indeed many other people are getting traditional Microsoft problems on a MAC...

The long and run of it is that I just want to be able to share my files between the 3 systems. Can anyone help please?
    Thanks in advance

  • Networking with macs and pcs mixed

Is it possible for me to:
    1. take an old PC with a huge hard drive in, wipe it clean and install Leopard onto it to use as a simple server?
    2. network it for a home office of 4 computers (2 macs, 2 pcs)?
I've never done networking before-is this possible?
    Thanks

    1. take an old PC with a huge hard drive in, wipe it clean and install Leopard onto it to use as a simple server?
If by "PC" you mean non-Apple hardware, no. Mac OS X only runs on Apple's systems.
    2. network it for a home office of 4 computers (2 macs, 2 pcs)?
If you run Leopard on a Mac, yes, you can have up to ten systems connect to it, both Windows systems and Macs.

  • Network render mac and pc together with AE?

    hi
I was wondering if it was possible to network render an after effects project sitting on a mac to a pc? and vice versa?
    cheers
    Angus

If both machines see the shared directory it should be possible. Depending on your setup, it's a bit of a theoretical scenario, though. Especially when working with certain footage types, you may fall victim to the much dreaded Gamma issues, plus you may run into other issues with fonts, layer names and file names...
