Networking a PC to my Mac network

We have a small office network, with four Mac. A G4running, two MacPro Pros, and one IMAC G5. We are all running Tiger. The MacBook Pros are wireless, the G4 and G5 are not. We needed to bring in a PC that runs Vista Home. We plugged it in the DLink Router, and it can access the other computers and the Zerox Phaser printer. But the Mac's can't access the PC. When I choose "Go" "My NetWork", I see it there, but when I try to Log On to the PC, it just spins it wheels and I have to relaunch the Finder.
I sure could use some help.

You might want to post this on the "Tiger" forum, since this is the "Leopard" forum and you're running Tiger on all your macs.
Ensure you have windows networking enabled on the macintoshes. Go to the system preferences and select "sharing" and select the windows sharing option. Then try to access the PC from the macintoshes by pressing cmd-K (or select "connect to server..." from the "Go" menu in the finder) and type "smb://ip_address" where "ip_address" is the ip address of your PC. You should also be able to browse for the PC as well, but sometimes that doesnt always work. Likewise, ensure you have a folder shared on your mac, and then from the PC type "\ \ip_address" (two backslashes with no space...this forum recognizes two backslashes as a "return" character and wont display them so I put a space between them in this message) in the explorer menubar, where ip_address is the address of your macintosh. This should tell the computer to directly access your mac instead of trying to discover it on the network. Alternatively you can use the computer network name instead of the ip addresses, but ip addresses is more direct.

I recently upgraded my iMac to 10.9.2 Nothing but problems since. Cannot connect reliably to a mixed pc/mac network at work, hangs at start up, hangs at shut down. Please help!

Can anyone offer suggestions as to why since upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.2 I can no longer access a mixed pc/mac network? Previous to the upgrade, I did not have any problems. Other macs within my office can still access it, so I know it is not a network based issue. It exists in my machine only, and the other matching machine that exists in the office did NOT do the upgrade and has no problems. (Bummer for me)
I have:
Reset the PRAM
Reset the SMC
Turned off the network Wifi and rebooted, then turned it on again, still ridicously slow when I try and connect to shared pc server. I can connect to other macs though.
Seems to alternate between a normal start up time, and a ridicously slow start up time with no apparent connecting reason as to why
I have a shared HP Laser printer on the network that is working with other computers accessing it, perhaps this is the conflict? It is in Wifi mode, but the software is loaded on my computer. However, prior to the upgrade, I had no problems.
My mail crashed shortly after installing 10.9.2, but I did finally get that up and running, but sometimes it loads and tells me that there is "No Mailbox Selected" in the initial opening Mail window. This is new, it never used to do that. I can select "Inbox" and see my mail, but I never used to need this step.
When I try and access the shared network that has always worked previously, it now will not load the shared docs and folders, just sits there, and hangs. Sometimes it will load the folders after about 5 minutes, but will not allow me to open them.
I do not run any virus protection software.
Any ideas? I would be infinitely grateful for suggestions.

Your download or install of the update may have been corrupt. Visit the Mac App Store and re-download the update or visit http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1726 and download the 10.9.2 update combo and re-install.

I tried, but ... Mac Network & Win-7 PC

OK, I start with "I Know..." look thru old posts to find answers.......
Just Spent last 4 Hours doing that. I understand how frustrating it can be to keep answering the same questions (Really Do) but a Great Fix for that would be finding Some Way to make it possible for us to FIND those old posts we are supposed to look for. I have read countless "Close, but not quite" discussions. I give up.
I'm assuming after entering all my machines in the database you can see those at the bottom of the post?? (I have seen others posts that had these details) to save space, I wont repete all that here other than to say I have MANY Apple Products (Phone, Pad, TV, Laptop, Mini...) and they all work & play with each other with fluid ease...... then there is the ONE... PC Laptop. Running Win-7.
NOTE: ALL of this is INSIDE My Home Network (Apple Time Machine Wireless) so no Internet stuff should be necessary.
I'm sure it is asking way too much, but I sure would like to be able to use the PC like any of my other mac's. I have managed to share a drive (External HDD) from the Mac Mini (Lion) and by "Mapping a Network Drive" on the PC it ...sometimes connects on it's own, when it doesn't it's simple enough to log back in and get it back but ....
As an example, with my Mac Book Pro. I can SEE all the other devices, Log into them, Share print & data and "Screen Share" to remotely administer (eg. the Mini from the Laptop)........... What I'm looking for is those same abilities on the PC.

Frankly the only posts I found even close seemed to be about making a lone Mac work on an existing PC Workgroup Network. This is the Flip Side, One Lone PC is a world of Mac's. I have to admit my PC skills are rusty. I was a PC Guy that got "Converted" used to know Lots of the in's & out's of the PC's, but that was about 4 Operating Systems Ago (2000 & XP-Pro) I find I now feel like a Newbie again plodding along in the new MS OS again.
Being able to see the other machines would be a plus, connecting to all the drives & my NAS would be Great, but the Screen Sharing would be my Top Wish (If it's even possible) My various Mac's often do work that is LONG Running (sa Rendering Long Video Files, etc.) that can run on their own for long periods and Occasionally Need just a Nudge from me to get started again. This is why the Screen Share is a Big Deal for me. Do some work, Check in on #1, start it's next process, log out, check on #2, move some files and begin a new Process, log out, check on #3, then go back to work.... and I'm Not Always at my desk, so being able to quickly Pop in & out of each machine is a BIG PLUS for me.
I tried some Remote Desktop Software a while back when I was trying to connect my iPad to my Home Mac Network from Outside my home and discovered I knew Less than Squat about that. Tried & Failed to get software to work even after several emails with the developer of the APP. I couldn't even understand what he was talking about (and I have a CS Degree ??... OK an Old One on Main Frames, not PC's but I'm no Dummy and he was talking WAY over my head) So I pretty much gave up on that option.

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 n above) - START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

Looking for Mac network professional to setup our small business network.

I've installed OS X Server on an iMac within our office to act as a file server and also allow us to access files using a VPN. Probably should have purchased a Mac Mini Server and will likely go that route in the end.
I'm computer savy, but little networks experience and just can't get this working correctly. If we had more time to dedicate to this and with help from this forum, I'm sure we could get it up and running. The goal is to get a simple network going that will allow us to access files, etc in the field and at our home offices with the ability to grow as our business expands.
At this time I'd really like to have someone just handle the setup of the network so we can get functionality asap. I've done some searches and looked for a network professional in our area with experience in Mac networking within a business environment, but haven't had much luck.
If anyone point me in a direction of someone that can help get this going I'd be forever greatful:)

I'm not a rocket scientist but I do have a working mail server and website using a mini mac and os x server (Mavericks).
It all begins with your DNS and I recommend you do use a mac mini with OS X Server as it's designed for that very purpose. You absolutely must get your DNS situation working first. There's a guy in this forum named Mr. Hoffman who is particularly useful (there are others) in this area. He has a website with lots of helpful advice and, in particular, this: http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436.
However, before you embark on that journey, this is what you'll basically need to do:
You're going to need a public (external/public facing) DNS and a private (internal) DNS. Your private DNS (served by your os x server) needs to live behind some kind of hardware firewall/router to prevent the great unwashed and curious from venturing into places they probably shouldn't be venturing. It's port(s) should never be exposed to the outside world.
Get a static IP from your ISP and register a domain name.
Let your domain registrar provide the external DNS.
You'll want to set up an internal DNS using OS X Server in the 10.0.0.0/16 subnet (it doesn't seem to let you use 10.0.0.0/8 and it really hates 192.168.0.0/24).
The server itself will need to be "self-aware" by setting it's System Preferences > Network Preferences > DNS Server to 127.0.0.1.
Of course, once you get the DNS working you'll want to turn on File Sharing and then (and only then) Open Directory. THen you can begin adding other services such as web, mail, vpn, etc...
I'm sure there is lots more that I've missed but this should do for now. Good luck.

Networking a PC with my Mac

I want to network a PC with my Mac. I did buy a router but was told be customer service of the router company that they did not support Mac software. I had my network up for about a half hour.
I need to know what router to buy for my network. The PC needs to be wired, but I would like to use my wireless airport. What router should I buy?

Routers use platform independent, industry standard network protocols. Therefore while the company says they don't support Macs...they are probalby just talking about their own software for configuring the router.
I've used routers and switches over years from just about every common maker...Linksys, NetGear, Asanté, D-Link and they all work with a Mac, so chances are yours works too.
If you really want one labeled Mac compatbile, buy an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station.

Dell connection to a Mac network....NOT WORKING!

OK, here is the situation. I am a Mac user and was given a old Dell with Windowz XP Pro. I already have a Mac network with two macs and a printer. They both can connect to my DSL perfectly. When I was given the Dell, I figured I wanted to connect it my existing network. This is where the problem comes in. First I have no idea how to do this. Second, I connect the Dell to the router. The Dell will not connect to the Network. But when i plug in the wire to the router, the network just, stops for the macs. So there I sit trying to figure out how to make this work with no internet for all computers. Basically I want my Dell on my already established Mac network so that my Dell can connect to the internet and everything like that, and still use my macs.
Help would be the greatest!

Are you connecting all of these with LAN cables or wirelessly? In order for the MACs to communicate with the Dell, you need to turn on 'windows sharing' from the 'sharing' folder in the 'system preferences'.
It's difficult to troubleshoot this kind of problem because there could be a number of different issues. Is the Dell able to connect to the internet if all of the macs are disconnected? What kind of router are you using? Have you tried configuring the router? If not, go onto the internet and read the through the FAQ section for your router. Perhaps you could run a program on the Dell to get it to work..
You need to be very methodical in how you attack this problem. Try the dell connected directly to the modem. Does it work? If not, there might be a problem with your ethernet cable. If it does, then try connecting the dell only to the router. Does it work? If not, then you need to follow the steps from your router and configure the router and computer so that it will work. Once that works, add the macs. Do they work? etc.

A particular network user can't login to a mac in a classrom but other network users can. Then the network user can login to other identical macs in same classroom. Anyone seen this before?

It has happen twice. Two different teachers in two different classrooms entering the correct user name and passwords and computer won't allow them to login. Then they try in different computers in same classroom and have no problem login.

Yes. I can login with a test user. And any other network user can login as well to this particular mac. Actually the mac has bootcamp and boots into either mac or windows. The same user entering the same login username and password can login into the windows side, but not the mac side.
I had this same issue last semester in another classroom, another mac and a different teacher. This summer I reformatted and imaged that mac and I asked that teacher to login today to that reimagened mac and she had no problem today doing so.

I need free network analyzer software for my mac. we are trying to monitor what software may be running which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem.what is recommended?

My internet keeps 'tripping' at or around the same period time each day. We have already replaced our modem from our internet provider and we bought a new airport extreme router. We do not believe these were the cause, although we have now ruled them out as a cause. Everytime the internet fails, our internet provider company tells us that there is still plenty of signal coming into our house. There is something going on inside we believe, and a technician set up our Network Utility to run a continuous ping test to capture information about when it 'trips' againn. Yesterday, it happened again, and when he checked the data out, he said he is sure there is something 'running in the background' on my IMac. He advised me to download a free Network Analyzer so he could further investigate what is was that was causing the problem, so I need a free network analyzer software for my Mac. The issue has been going on for a long time, so it is not the new operating system, Lion. This morning, we changed the radio channel from 'auto' to 'manual' and set a new channel, hoping that might help. We are trying to find out what program may be running (even a tiny one in the background) which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem. What is free downloadable product is recommended?

Will Activity Monitor and/or Network Utility, both already in the Utilities folder on your Mac, help in trying to diagnose the problem.
If you are connecting via wifi what encryption are you using? If you're using the Exteme I doubt that you are using WEP, but worth checking as it seems Macs don't like it and work better using WPA.

Excel files not available across an all mac network

All the excel files in my public folder are not accessible across a two machine all Mac network. Word files will open. Anyone have any suggestions?

I know this is going to sound weird, but I spent the last two days figuring this out. I recently bought the teacher's Edition of Office 2004 so I could have the same version of Office on 3 of my Macs and after installation that's when Excel quit working over my home network. The previous versions of Office up to X didn't exhibit this behavior. So after looking at Apple's and Microsoft's sites and user groups and getting no answer that worked, I looked at my machines to see what the differences might be. The thing that tripped my trigger was two of my Macs had the same named hard drive and one didn't, and it was that one that was named differently that could see one of the other two. So look at the name under your hard drive icons (by default it's named Macintosh Hard Drive). If they are the same, rename one of them (the name can be anything just as long as it's not Macintosh Hard Drive). I would name them something to differentiate them like Will's iBook or Will's iMac. I don't have a programmers understanding of why this worked, but my scientific wild *** guess (S.W.A.G) is it's an Excel naming convention gaffe. It appears that Excel thinks there are no others on the network because all the hard drives are named the same. Word doesn't do this so I'm guessing that instead of looking for m.a.c. addresses or your network DNS/IP numbers, Excel is looking for hard drive names to distinguish users on the network. If I'm anywhere close to right, this is really dumb! Try it and see if this solves you problem.

On a Mac-to-Mac network I can't see the other Mac in the finder

On a Mac-to-Mac network both Mac connect to the same network. However, after activating the file sharing both Mac's don't show in the Finder of the other.
Can anybody help?

If just clicking in the 'Network' icon in Finder doesn't work try:- from finder hit command/shift/K or 'Go' network. That should get the other computer showing in the finder of the first.

Help needed turning LC II into Mac network server

Just picked up 4 LC IIs that I would like to turn into Mac network servers. I would like to adapt the 80 pin blade style SCSI HDs to work with a B&W Rev. A. Need to learn more about hot swappable SCSI arrays.

You have asked seven questions at once.
Any Mac running 7.1 or later can share files using Personal File Sharing, without the need for AppleShare server or Mac OS X Server software. This is all most folks need for casual home or light office use. 7.5.3 and later has the easier to use Open Transport networking software, and 9.0 or later can most easily connect with Macs running 10.4 and later.
LC-II have only narrow SCSI-1, and unless they have sprouted a PCI slot, cannot participate in the rest of this discussion.
There are several classes of Wide SCSI busses. The one first implemented in the beige G3 with Server card is a Fast & Wide Single-Ended bus. It used the readily available and really cheap Apple/ATTO PCI PSC card. It is limited to the 3 to 4 feet of 68-pin high-tech-plastic-jacket cable already installed inside the cabinet, and adding any external drives made the cable too long, and the whole thing became unreliable. Many Single-Ended Drives can provide termination with a strap setting.
Historically, HVD (High Voltage Differential) came next, but it was a false start. It is incompatible with everything. Stay away.
The next class of Controllers and Drives used LVD (Low-Voltage Differential) drivers and receivers. These "balanced" or "push-pull" drivers and receivers are much more noise-immune. Speeds increase dramatically and cable length restrictions are (practically speaking) eliminated. Some Internal cables still use the flat high-tech-plastic-jacket cable, but are generally implemented with twist-and-flat cables. To use adjacent drive positions in a Blue & White G3, your cable must have more than 8 inches between connectors, mainly due to the bizarre way the cable must be folded to reach the drive connectors.
A discrete captive terminator at the end of the cable is the norm. Occasionally, a terminator that is plugged into the last connector socket is used instead. All these terminators are generally capable of applying termination for either LVD or Single-Ended cables, and do so automatically. But they are too big to fit on a drive, and therefore almost no LVD-capable drives contain termination circuitry.
Caution: If any drive on the cable is a Single-Ended drive, the entire cable drops back into Single-Ended mode, and previous cable length restrictions and speed limits apply!

Mac network performance issue

I've just had a new ISP hookup. My WiFi is blazing fast. But my Mac network speed is slowwwww.
Speedtest.net just reported:
Ping: 253ms
Download: 1.12Mbps
Upload: 0.43 Mbps
On my iPad via Wifi, I get:
Ping: 19ms
Download: 13.88Mbps
Upload: 0.90Mbps
My Mac I think dates back to about 2005/6, even though you would think 2008 based on sites like everymac.com. But I bought it long before 2008.
The only modification I've made to it has been to bump it from 2GB to 4GB memory. That slowed down the bootup, but not ridiculously.
How can I diagnose fix this network issue?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Trying to access Mac networked printer from laptop with Windows XP

I'm stuck: I have printer sharing enabled on my G5, printer is connected to my router; from system pref/print & fax/ my URL for the printer is as follows:
mdns://myprinter+serial#.printer.tcp.local.
Windows wants this format
http://printservername/Printers/sharename/.printer
I've tried any number of permutations, and can't get the printer to show up in the printer wizard. I installed the software/drivers in the PC for the specific printer.
I'm just not a PC user, and can't figure this out!

Find the IP address of the mac in Network Prefs.
Find the Mac's queue name for that printer in Print & Fax > highlight printer > Get Info (Show Info).
On the PC, add new printer, and add the printer exactly as you were trying, filling in IP address for "printserver_name" and queue name for "share_name." Don't need the "/.printer" part. For driver, you'll need to choose a postscript printer model driver, even if that printer isn't a postscript one. The Mac will translate the postscript to the printer's language. Apple Color Laserwriter xx/xx worked well for me.

How can I extend the range of an Extreme network with Express when my mac won't find the Express???

Cable modem. Properly working Apt Extreme router (g), but inadequate range to upstairs home office. I want to entend with an Apt Express and have a networked USB printer working off the Express unit placed in my office. Mac mini running Lion can't/won't find the Express.

If you were able to access the AX using the AirPort Utility but your PC is still not able to connect. I would try performing a "factory default" reset on the AX to see if that helps before going to the store. This type of reset will put the AX back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration which would broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. If your PC still cannot "see" or connect to this network, then a visit to the store would be in order.

Short for Media Access Control address, a hardware address that uniquely identifies each node of a network. In IEEE 802 networks, the Data Link Control (DLC) layer of the OSI Reference Model is divided into two sublayers: the Logical Link Control (LLC) layer and the Media Access Control (MAC) layer. The MAC layer interfaces directly with the network medium. Consequently, each different type of network medium requires a different MAC layer.
On networks that do not conform to the IEEE 802 standards but do conform to the OSI Reference Model, the node address is called the Data Link Control (DLC)
I have a feeling you might have the term MAC Address confused
Depending on the device you are using it may be that you can type in 192.168.1.1 and hit return key, and it will give you the Router Utility and this can give you the assigned IP Addresss to external devices, if the router is used.
