Networking/accessing an iPhone and a local network printer simultaneously

I am a new mac user and I live on a boat so I need to access Internet using my iPhone as a personal hotspot. I also have a wireless network on the boat which gives me access to a network drive and a printer. My problem is that I can't seem to print or access the network drive while connected to my personal hotspot; I need to deselect the iPhone and select the local wireless network in the wifi setting to access the printer and drive.
How do I go about getting the mac to connect to both simultaneously so I can print a page to on my network printer while on Internet?

Tether to your phone with Bluetooth or USB instead of Wi-Fi. Search for "Personal Hotspot" in the user guide for instructions on how to set this up.

  • There was a problem connecting to the server "my server.local" this file is available on your computer. Access the files and volumes locally.

    Hi,
I have a strange problem connecting one of the office laptops (Macbook Pro 10.7) to the disk in the Apple Time Capsule.  It's just one laptop that has this problem and the other 3 no problems at all and they all run OS X 10.7 Lion, I can access the Time Capsule disk over WAN on all machines but locally on the problem machine i get this message "There was a problem connecting to the server "myserver.local" this file is available on your computer. Access the files and volumes locally."   Now from this message it sounds like the problem laptop thinks the network drive (Time Capsule) is the same as it's self in the way of name or address however they clearly have different IP addresses locally.
Any ideas on this would be apreciated as I can only think a clean install but don't want to do this if not necessary.
    Thanks
    Jarrah

I think I gave you some bad info in the above, where i enterered the text "myserver.local" & "example.local" this was the host name of the server (Time Capsule) so not local on the computer.
No i didn't try your method, I'll give it a go - I thought the folder option was for local files and not on a server ?

  • Smb. Access the volumes and files locally. all lies!

I want to connect to a windows box which has sharing enabled. I was doing this yesterday and it was fine. Today, Mavericks has thrown in the towel and decided to think different.
What I normally do is CMD-K and connect to the server. I'll type it in - smb://tardproof - but it can't do it.
So I'll try connecting to it by it's known, fixed IP address - smb://192.168.0.107 - and ...
Hmm, that's strange. Since the mac clearly thinks it *can* see it on the network, otherwise why would it be listing it in the finders' "Shared" area? I mean, that's an automatic thing and not something you can command-drag out like normal locations...
ok.. so if I try to click on it there ...
    Maybe it's authentication. I'll "Connect as ..."
Dang! Ok, lets think about this. Maybe it's SMB playing up. I know, I'll connect forcing SMB1, since I know Mavericks now defaults to v2.
    and
Dang! (again). No, wait, the message has changed. "Access the volumes and files locally." Sweet, let me just
    I'm sorry, where?
hmm, lets just check this out
so ok, there's definately nothing there in /Volumes, but I know I can ping it. Let's have a look from the other end - can Windows see my mac?
Yep. All good there. So we have a single direction smb system, in the exact opposite than I need.
    Dang!

This has been happening repeatedly and has been reported to the hosts in the Lounge. They "are working on a fix."

  • The server is available on your computer. Access the volume and files local

I recently did a clean install on my MacBook (from Leopard to Snow Leopard) and got this error when attempting screen sharing. I provide limited support at my office and do that primarily through screen sharing. One thing I noticed after the install was not only could I not screen share with anyone on the local network, but if anyone tried to connect access my shared folder it would actually open the shared folder of another computer on the network.
Whereas Screen Sharing would simply time out if I attempted to connect to the majority of computers on the network. However, when I tried connecting to the machine whose shared folders would open if someone tried connecting to my computer, I got the "Connection failed. The server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally." error.
After performing a hard reset on our Airport Base Station I am now able to screen share with the other computers on our network EXCEPT for the one that gave me the error in quotes above. Any ideas?

    Hi,
I also encountered this error but in a different situation : after having restored my Lion installation from a Time Machine backup, everything was okay except that I couldn't connect to any disk attached to my Airport extreme.
I searched for hours and even restored my backup a second time. The problem is specific to only one client since my Macbook was still able to connect to the AE. I ended up resetting all the settings on the AE and restoring them one by one.
The problem appears when I restore the address range distributed by the AE's DHCP server to the one that was configured before.
Thus the solution seems to change this address range. Must be something related to a network route or cache or anything like this.
I hope it will help anybody who encounters this problem. Luckily it seems there are very few : the number of occurences of this problem in google is very low.

  • The server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally.

I have actually solved this issue. However, it was not easy to find support for this specific issue. Here's the problem and solution that worked for me.
    The Problem
I had an issue with my Macbook Pro and Mac Pro connecting to each other. All of a sudden, I got this message "The server COMPUTERNAME is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally."
    The Solution
After a bit of digging, I found this article:
    http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-wo rkaround/
Steps 1 and 2 of that article seemed to do the trick for me:
    Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and do:
    sudo chmod o+w /Library/Preferences
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_host_prefs_version -int 1
    Now restart your computer.
From Finder, select an AFP server, or use “Connect To…”.  This will cause the AFP Client to create the full preferences file.
Thanks to http://www.alexanderwilde.com for helping me solve this.

  • Unable to connect to Time Capsule: "Access the volumes and files locally"

I've been experiencing a problem for about two months now with no ability to connect to my Time Capsule. I have other systems in my household including being able to access from a Windows desktop and another older MacBook.
When I attempt to connect to the Time Capsule, I receive an error "The server <Capsule Name> is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally."
I've attempted various fixes including changing the network sharing name of my laptop and time capsule name via AirPort Utility as suggested in the following link without success:
    http://positivelyglorious.com/software-media/snow-leopard-afp-access-the-volume- and-files-locally/
I've also seen that this was previously posted late last fall without any satisfactory resolution at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10526171
And none of the troubleshooting helpful hints in the following link are applicable or resulted in any resolution of my problem:
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html
With now two months of no backup, this is getting a bit ridiculous. I had hoped a OSX update would have helped but as of yet no glory.
I would GREATLY appreciate any help any of you might be able to provide!
    Thanks,
    Tim

Several volumes and folders have been shared and they are accessible within LAN. The problem is that I cannot even connect to the server, even though the connection has been established. Mac OS X always seems to think that it has already been connected and they are readily available but it's not listed under Network.
Looking at other topics, this seems to be a prevalent problem but I don't find any solution for this yet.

  • Server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally

I set up a VPN incoming call from a Windows XP server at home and I have an iMac in the office with Snow Leopard 10.6.5.
I manage to connect to VPN to the Windows XP server at home but everytime I Connect To Server to the IP address, it always comes back with an error: "Server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally".
Um... where is this volumes and files? The Finder does not have it. Going to Terminal and ls the Network directory comes up empty.
Can anyone help? How can I connect to a Windows server via VPN?
    Thanks.

  • " ... available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally"

Uh, help. Powerbook G3 10.4.11, and a Mac Mini Intel, both attached to a Linksys.
    192.168.1.2 and .3
Yesterday I had a Drop Box folder on the Powerbook showing up properly on the Mini.
Never have gotten a DropBox folder on the Mini to be found from the Powerbook.
Today after some reboots for other reasons, no connection. I try the "Go" menu that used to work for 192.168.1.3 and get
"The server “192.168.1.3” is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally.
    Okay.
Where is it and how do I find it to access it?

Ah, I see it's happened to others:

  • I recently bought an external hard drive and attached it to a wireless modem router. The problem is that i can't access it from my macbook. I get a "connection failed" and "the server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally".

Well I believe I described the problem above. I want only to add that the external hard drive is a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive 1TB and the wireless modem router is a Belkin N Plus (model F5D8635-4 v1). Also, in the finder window under "shared" I see a "belkinserver" and when I click it, it says "connection failed". If I click "connect as" I get the "the server "belkinserver" is available on your computer..." which I mentioned above. I tried to connect macbook via ethernet to the modem router and then when I typed "smb://belkinserver" it immediately prompted me for a username and a password and when I typed them finally I got to enter the contents of the hard drive! So what's the problem wirelessly?

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • No wifi network printer sfr box problem

    Bonjour
    Merci.
    Hello
I would like to install my printer on my sfr box without using the WiFi. All my computers are connected on sfr box with cables Ethernet. I connected my printer in my sfr box usb, it is recognized is active on the page of configuration of my sfr box.
During the addition of a printer IP ( 192.168.1.1 ), with any protocol, the installer sends back to me an error message of impossible communication with the printer.
After check, my wired connection works with sfr box for the access to internet and the local network.
In WiFi mode, this plan works. ( WiFi printer). But in certain place of my house the WiFi does not pass, where from the obligation to use the wired.
    An explanation?
    Thank you.

    Merci de votre intérêt.
J'utilise une imprimante Canon MG5350, et la boite SFR est en effet, un routeur modem modèle NB4.
La configuration que je souhaite mettre en place avec mon mac fonctionne avec un PC équipé de windows vista.

  • LaserJet 2550n network printer on XP host PC, can't install Windows 7 client laptop

Have Color LaserJet 2550n network printer connected to XP host PC. I can't install  Windows 7 client laptop for printer. The wireless network is fine, I can access documents back and forth, merely the printer doesn't work and there's no way to download 64bit drivers for this printer from HP.

    Resolved, not solved.
I talked to HP product support. The Officejet Pro 8500 A910 will not install on Windows XP (at least the Home Edition) when networked through a router. It will install through USB. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it with only USB connected to clean out all the network printer/scanner information. Product support claimed it would install through an ether net cable connected between the printer and computer but this does little good if you need internet access.

  • Word 2010 32bit connecting to network printer hangs

User has issues when trying to print from Word or Excel 2010 32bit. In word once the user clicks print, there is a drop down menu to select a printer. When the user selects the network printer (a Ricoh MP C6501), underneath the printer drop down it says
"connecting to printer". Word will hang and then show up as "not responding".
Notes: There is another network printer (HP Printer) and a local HP Printer setup along with the ususal Fax, Microsoft XPS Document Writer, OneNote 2010. The default printer is the local HP Printer. When selecting the other network printer printer (HP Printer)
there is no hang or lag. From research I have found that it could be that the driver resides on the Print Server which is why it was taking so long to connect. So I directly connected to the printer by IP address bypassing the Print Server with an updated
32bit driver and it still comes up with the same results.

  • Local usb printing LJ P1102W with tsweb access

    Hello,
I have a laptop with windows 7 prof 64bits installed and a local usb printer HP Laserjet p1102w CE657A installed. Now I try to print via tsweb access (2008 server 64bits) a document, but this doesn't work. The printer is accessible via the server with a redirected session and uses the Terminal Services Easy Print driver. Is this a known issue and is there a possible solution? It's a business solution so I have not the opportunity to use the wifi option. I have also tried to install the own drivers and to share printer on the server, but this will not work also.
    Local usb printing is working.
    Greetings,
    Marcel

Use GPEDIT.msc to open local group policy on the terminal server.
The policy location is “Computer Configuration -> Administrative templates -Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host -> Printer Redirection”. Set it as disabled. Open CMD command and run GPUPDATE /Force on the CMD command and log off then log on to make the changes affected.
    It works for me.
