Networking - can't see root folders now

I have two macs at home, which I have been using over a wifi network sucessfully for 1 year. I am the admin user of both machines.
Recently I upgraded from 10.4.4 to 10.4.5
Today I noticed that I couldn't connect either machine to the other's system (root) folder, which I had been doing before.
I don't want to connect to "matt" on either machine because that's not where my data is. I keep a separate folder in both machines User folder for data I want to synch.
Has the networking security policy changed? If so, how can I put it back to what it was?
imac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

You need to contact your user to provide you that path where he created the folders. You can also use them using Windows Explorer: Of course, results might take long time to be shown if indexation is disabled.

Replying to my own post - heh. I downloaded iExplorer (http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/) which allowed me access to the files on the phone and there was the phantom movie in the DCIM folder. Deleted it, and all is well - although I still have 0.65gb of Other in iTunes.....

  • Can't see files/folders on server from windows

i'm not sure if this is related to the ACL issue (not being properly honored in Samba on Leopard), but i'll explain my problem and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction
i've set up file sharing with my server on several Macs and a couple of PCs without a problem, but on one PC, when i connect to the server, i can't see any folders at all on the server in the Explorer window. i also can't move files to the server as it tells me i don't have permissions. i am certain this is set up the same as the other PCs and ensured that the Windows user has file sharing enabled on my server.
please note that i'm fairly new to setting up a server so not too much jargon please!
    cheers
    ric

The problem may be how the CD was formatted. Macs support ISO-9660 better than any other crossplatform format.
Recently Software Architects has improved UDF support on the Mac, though I have yet to test it to see how true their claim is:

  • Can't see certain folders

I'm a new admin running Server 2008R2 on Cisco hardware. A user created a subfolder and wanted special permissions for that folder. I accessed the Server Desktop, went to "computer" to look for that folder and noticed that I can't locate it.
There are several folders that I can see if I'm looking on the file server itself (I access via a VPN) but I can't see these folders in such a way that I can set permissions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can't see my folders on icloud

Can't see my folders in the mailbox on icloud. How to handle?

Did you try creating a new mailbox on your mac's mail application and choosing iCloud as its location in the New Mailbox window, you can create a new mailbox using the '+' icon in the bottom LH corner of the mail window.

  • CAN'T SEE SHARED FOLDERS FROM THE PC ON MY MAC SINCE  SNOW LEOPARD UPGRADE

HELP! Ever since I've installed Snow Leopard on my iMac, I don't see my folders I selected for sharing from the Microsoft PC computer in my network anymore. I can't seem to locate anything. However the PC is able to see the folders from my iMac. If anyone has solutions to this problem, your help would greatly be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Pat

Your problem is probably the same one I described in my thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2133962&tstart=0
The problem in my case, seems to be that the SL mac is not setting itself as the master browser, so when a Windows PC is switched on, it doesn't update that computer in the finder sidebar.
You can see if this is the case, by opening terminal, and typing:
    nmblookup -M -- -
If it comes back with "name_query failed to find name _MSBROWSE_#01" then you've got the same problem as me. With Leopard, my mac would report back as the master browser.
It's got nothing to do with the firewall (I've tried turning mine off ,to no avail). Also, my workgroup is correct, and smb sharing is turned on for the user.

  • Can't see shared folders with AFP protocol

    Hi,
I have an home network, with 2 iMac and a Netgear (DG834PN) router.
When I try to share a folder with AFP protocol (Preferences > Sharing > Sharing documents),
I can't see it from other computer.

Just to dig in deeper with this. I'm having a similar problem (perhaps the same) as described above.
I'm using smbnetfs to mount a folder in my home directory to be my network neighbourhood. When I open it in pcmanfm I can see the work groups, and upon opening a workgroup it'll show nothing more. But in fact, when you open the terminal and do a ls -a you'll notice there are in fact folders corresponding to your computers in that workgroup. Browsing any further works flawlessly.
It's however a minor annoyance that pcmanfm doesn't seem to show them (you can however add a slash to your navigation bar and they'll show up there, rather weird). Has anyone found a way to solve that?

  • Network can't see my Mac after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2

After upgrading to ML 10.8.2 (coming from Lion), the network (another mac and an iPad) can't see my Macbook-pro.
Using a network scanner (Fing on iPad), my Macbook is not there, and in the same way all the other services from Macbook-pro (such as Internet sharing, Filemaker sharing, ...) don't work.
My Macbook-pro is regularly connected to the right network and has a proper IP address (192.168.1.32 with 192.168.1.1 being the router, ...33 the other mac and so on). Also, my Macbook-pro perfectly reaches both other LAN devices and the internet.
I've tried disabling Firewall but nothing changed. I havn't got any antivirus nor security programs running.
    Anyone experiencing the same issue?

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Computers on network can't see each other and can't communicate

I have a Linksys router, WRT54G, which calls itself wireless but has only wired connections.   I have my computer and my phone (for Vonage service) plugged into it.    My router is then connected to the household router by a CAT 5 cable.   The household router is also a Linksys; wireless and with plugs for a half dozen computers.
I get teh Internet fine with no problem, but we want to share my printer on the household network.   My housemate cannot see me on the household network and can't see my router either, and can't communicate with my computer with the \\Name command.   I can't see the household network and can't communicate with my housemate's computer with the \\Name command.
I am running Windows Firewall.   I am sure that so is my housemate.
Is there something special we have to do to set up our routers for the household network to work properly?
It looks like I'm supposed to configure my router to communicate with another router instead of connect directly to the Internet, but when I tried htat and enabled interactive adjusting or whatever I suddenly couldn't access the Intenet and my phone couldn't get a dial tone, until I changed it back.
Tehre isn't any explanation of how to do it anywhere.   There aer technical descriptions of what each thing does but I don't see where it says how to set it up or how to troubleshoot.
I don't know if we were supposed to set up networks and manually add each other's computers.  Apparently my housemate did not have to do that with his wife's computer or his notebook.    They just show up in the network.
    Yours,
    Dora

Thanks for your help.   Unfortunately between when I last looked at your name and when I managed to reply I forgot your name.
    1.  For the option that the parts of the network can see each other, you plug the cable into the OUTGOING port of the SECONDARY router?    That doesn't make a whole lot of sense; how cuold that possibly work?  The way I understand it, the signal can come in only through the incoming plug, which you call the "internet" plug, if I'm understanding you.
    2.  If you choose the setup that makes any sense - the cable is plugged into the incoming plug - the "internet" plug - on the secondary router, and the ethernet connection on the primary router, can all the computers see each other and their resources, ie, printers they want to share?
    3.  If not, why on earth?
    4.  for the second option, it looks like some steps are missing.   Why don't you need to disable DHCP and set the router to be a secondary router?
PM me for my contact details.
    Thanks!
    Yours,
    Dora Smith

  • Can't see image folders to import into LR

Apologies in advance for any duplication, I originally posted this incorrectly.
I can import photos directly from a card via the card reader on my MacBook Pro (OS Mavericks) but I prefer to organise my folder structure and import the images into a folder on the HDD first and then from there import them into Lightroom.  Everything worked fine up until upgrading from LR5.2 to 5.3 a few weeks ago.  I can see the folders (and images) in the Mac's Finder.  However in LR, the folders with the new (as yet not imported images) do not show AT ALL when I try to import the new images (all other folders on the HDD are visible in LR).
    Dave

However in LR, the folders with the new (as yet not imported images) do not show AT ALL when I try to import the new images (all other folders on the HDD are visible in LR)
    Please be more specific.
Are you looking in the Import dialog box, on the left hand side, in the Source panel? Or are you looking in the Library Module, on the left hand side, in the Folders panel? Or are you looking somewhere else?

  • I can't see the folders on my desktop

hi All, has anyone had this problem. i'm able to turn on my computer, but i get the spinning beach ball of death and i can't see any of my folders on my desktop!

Do you see anything on the TV?
If you just see your desktop, then your MacBook is defaulting to extended display mode. Try pressing the Command + F1 keys to see if you get the menu bar and other icons.

  • Home network - can't see shared computer in Finder

I set up a home network between my macbook (leopard) and macmini (10.4) but can't see the shared computer tab in the Finder, could it be beacuase a don't have leopard on the macmini?
I guess I'm missing a trick. Can anybody help?
    Thanks

I can no longer see my MacPro from my MBP in the
    finder's "Network" window.
I can still connect using "Connect to Server" and
    typing the IP manually.
From the MacPro I can see the MBP just fine.
I repaired permission, ran cocktail etc...
    Any ideas?
Apple uses a service called "Bonjour" to discover devices on a network. Bonjour piggybacks on the mDNS service, meaning it broadcasts on port 5353. Apple is sensitive to being called "chatty", because it's past device discovery methods were indeed chatty. Bounjour has built in some passivity, and devices will delay their broadcasts if logic detects they're not needed. Sometimes all it takes is clicking on the Network tab.
It all boils down to 1 of 3 things:
    1) The MacPro is not sending out Bonjour discovery packets.
    2) The MacPro is sending out Bonjour discovery packets, but the discovery packets are not reaching the MBP. This is highly doubtful, since the process is working in the opposite direction.
    3) The packets reach the MBP but it's not responding to them.
There's a great (and free) utility called Bonjour Browser, and it's available on versiontracker. If you run it on the MBP, you'll have a much better ideas as to what's happening.
My best guess is that the MacPro is not sending out packets. This would either be due to not having anything to share (File Sharing turned off) or logic which dictates that it's been sending out these packets for a long time so they're delayed for 30 minutes to reduce chattiness.
