Networking Firewire Drives

I have a new MacBook Pro and Time Capsule as well as an older iMac and three firewire drives.  Is there any way to network the firewire drives to the Time Capsule without having a physical connection? Any advice would be appreciated, as I am new to networking.
Here is what I have done. The MacBook Pro and TC are networked wirelessly. The firewire drives are connected to the iMac, which is connected directly to the TC. This works very nicely BUT I would like to dispose of my iMac. Is there any way I can connect the firewire drives to the wireless network without physically attaching them to the iMac or MacBook Pro?

I have a firewire HD; Acomdata, that I used as backup my emac. Then I got a Macbook, and a Time Capsule to go with it. I have the firewire drive connected to the macbook, and the macbook wirelessly to the TC. I have been transferring files over to the TC via firewire.
All of this because I don't really trust the TC which took way too much trial and error, and lots of advice to get hooked up. Even then, the backups have been very erratic. I can't use the firewire drive as an extra backup unless I allow time machine to wipe it clean first. (I'm awaiting TC updates to hopefully iron out some of these bugs, Time Capsule seems to be infested with them-ha-ha)
I don't know if that helps... but the bottom line is "Yes, my TC is connected to my firewire drive."

  • Mounting shared network Firewire drive

    Hi,
I've got two Macs on a home network. One has several Firewire drives. Over the network I can see the that Mac and it's drives from my first Mac. Is there a way Automator can automatically mount one of those Firewire drives on my first Mac every morning so I can see it on my Desktop? I'm new to Automator and am still trying to figure out how to create a script for this. Thanks!!!

    OK, ignore the above!
I found out how to mount a remote network drive and then schedule that action in iCal (first create a remote drive alias on your Desktop, then use 'get specific finder items' and 'open finder items' in Automator, then save the action script as a iCal plugin). Yeah!
Next step, now I just have to figure out how to unmount the drive when I'm done with it...

  • Networked FireWire Drive Mounts Inconsistenly

It's the oddest thing... My (Lacie) FireWire partitions appear on my Airport networked iBook on the rarest of occasions, as after a Disk Utility diagnostic and restart on the iMac hosting them. Then, after one session of blissful connection they retreat from Network access. I tried setting up SharePoints with no success, and I've seen them mount long before I ever heard of SharePoints, just not consistently. Last night I mounted a partition on the iBook then, after a logout and back in on the iMac it was gone and would not come back up, even though the login on hosting iMac was back to what it was before.
Logins and permissions, no doubt. We use only two, admin accounts on the iMac and one admin (same as iMac) on the iBook. What gives?

    UPDATE:
OK, I did an erase and install of OS X Server 10.4 on the internal hard drive of this machine and updated to 10.4.9. The drive still does not show up on the desktop but if I choose Go to Folder ... and type in /Volumes, the drive is there but has a transparent icon. I can click on it and get to the files but I cannot get it to mount on the server desktop or on any OS X client machines. On my OS X client machines I can similarly go to the /Volumes folder and get at the drive that way. For now, I've manually created an alias on each client but there has to be a way to fix it.
FYI, Apple System Profiler on the server reports:

  • Firewire drives do not show up on network

    I have a G5 with 2 external drives, 1 firewire, 1 USB
I have a G4 with 2 external drives, both firewire.
    When these computers are networked,
The G5 sees the internal drives from the G4.
The G4 sees the internal drives from the G5, as well as the connected USB drive.
But neither computer sees the external firewire drives of the other computer.
I used to see these drives and made aliases for them, but they do not show up now.
I am using the admin accounts from each computer.
    G5 running 10.4.5
    G4 running 10.3.9
What is the cause of this problem? How can I mount the firewire drives on the networked computers?

I need to modify my question. I also have a G3 running 10.2.8
Yesterday I noticed that the Network icon in the G5 sidebar had an eject symbol next to it. That seems strange, upon reflection, as if something was not right.
I shut off all the machines for the evening.
Today, I restarted all the machines. Chose Finder->Go->Connect to Server->Browse
From each machine, I was able to see the external drives on the other machines, as well as the internal drives, over the network. I did not use nor install sharepoints. It just works (with an admin account).
However, on the G5, there is an external firewire Firelite drive. It is formatted as Fat 32.
It does not show up in the Browse window when I connect to the G5 from any computer. If I move it to the G4, it also does not show up when I connect to the G4 from any computer. So it does not seem to be related to the OS version.
In other words, it seems that since the Firelite is Dos formatted, I cannot see it on the network, even though it is a firewire drive.
So how can I fix this problem?

  • Not able to connect to firewire drive on network

Hey there knowledgeable people I'm having problems connecting to a firewire drive on a network at home any help greatly appreciated. here's the set up.
G5 has 5 firewire drives daisy-chained together and there's also a lone USB drive attached to it as well. G5 is plugged into (via eternet) an eternet hub. my powerbook is also plugged into the network via the hub. I can see/access all the drives on the G5 (including the USB) but there's one firewire drive that I can't see (it is formatted FAT32, is that an issue?). I've tried plugging it into the G5 on its own without going through the daisy-chain but still nothing.
any thoughts as to why? oh and both computers are running 10.5.2
    cheers, Julian

Never mind my question any more. I reformatted the drive in question to Mac Journaled and presto it shows up on the network no probs.

  • Mounting Firewire drive over Network?

    So here's the deal:
I have an external hard drive (FireWire 400) which is currently connected to an iMac G4, but I am unable to mount the volume over the network and access it via WiFi on my MacBook. In other words, it does not appear in the list of mountable drives when I use the "Connect to Server" funtion of the finder. However, mounted DMG's do appear in the list - I find this to be strange.
Has anyone found a route around this? Is it even possible?
    Setup (Details):
-The iMac is connected via a terrestrial network. [iMac > Hub > Modem (DHCP server, WiFi base station)]
-The MacBook is connected via an 802.11g WiFi signal. [MacBook > Modem (DHCP server, WiFi base station)]
-The hard drive is plugged into the iMac via FireWire, and is mounted on the desktop, as it always is.
-System preferences has all but "Xgrid" checked in the Sharing Pane [Both iMac and MacBook]

I don't seem to have this option. It sounded promising, nonetheless... The Disk Utility also doesn't mention this.
Does it matter that it's a FAT32 volume? I hadn't thought to include this initially... If it does, and it's not possible, then I can give up, as I don't have another drive to back up to and reformat the one I'd like to use. Perhaps this will result in finally getting a dreamy LaCie drive... =)

  • LaCie 400 MB firewire drive network througput

File sharing read speed is low at about 24 KB on average and dropping down to zero all the time. File sharing write speed on the other hand is as might be expected, oddly, as is Finder copy speed.
It 's attached to a G3/233 with 4 port PCI firewire card and 100 Mb PCI ethernet card, running OS 9.2.2 Opendoor's personal edition enhanced TCP file sharing. Network set up comprises 10-100 Mb 5 port switch, Airport Express and DSLmodem-router-firewall, configured to direct port 548 inbound traffic to the G3.
Slow down hits wired and wireless clients indiscriminately, whether on LAN or WAN, but, at the same time, they suffer no loss of speed whatsoever reading from the G3's internal ATA or external SCSI disk. Frustratingly, when still on OS 8.6 the firewire drive did graciously perform the main job of streaming mp3. Any suggestions to restore its former glory will be much appreciated.

Symptom indicates driver failure. Diagnosis confirmed by reverting to FireWire 2.3.3 (instead of OS 9.2.2's version 2.8.5) plus LaCie's 6.5.8. File sharing speed now is back to what it used to be. Still, leaves one wondering how come nobody else encountered this problem.
Actually, about 750KB/s while a huge improvement over what it was before, does not seem to live up to expectations by the set up described above either. Or does it?

  • Add firewire drive to network

    Hi,
I've got two emacs connected together via an ethernet router. File sharing is on. I both emacs can see each others sharing folder on the desktop and iTunes music sharing also shows up in both emacs.
I've just added a la cie firewire drive and I am trying to get one of the partitions which is on my desktop to be available to the other emac. But I can't work out how to do this. I've changed the permissions to owner/system and everyone has read/write but that didn't help.
    Any help appreciated

    Hi,
Okay, the best way to do this is to first go to the Finder. Then, Connect to Server from the Go menu. When the Connect to Server window appears, click browse and double-click on the other eMac's name. Now, you can log into the other eMac just as you would if you were physically on it. After you type in your name and password, click connect and select the volumes you wish to mount. (In your case, you would choose a partition of the firewire drive) You should now be able to access everything on your firewire drive through your local network.

  • I would like to use time Machine to back up to a network SMB drive. I can see the drive on my desktop but it will not show in the time machine window to be able to select it

I currently have a mini server (OSX10.8.5, server 2.2.2) that I am using Time Machine to back up 4 external drives that are connected to the server via firewire 800. I would like to use Time Machine to back up to a windows network SMB drive. I can see the drive on my desktop but it will not show in the time machine window to be able to select it for use.
    Can this be done
Thanks for any and all help

The supported targets for Time Machine backups are local (direct-connected) disks, and network targets include Time Capsule, a disk hanging off the current-generation AirPort (though not earlier AirPort devices), and OS X Server systems.
The Time Machine storage is based on the HFS+ file system, so I would not expect TM to work with SMB file services.
While there are hacks to allow Time Machine to access network drives, I would not consider those to be reliable. Skim the forum and the 'net for related details, and for previous discussions of setting this up and the related issues that can arise.
Remember to test the recovery with whatever you decide to use; whole point of backups is the ability to restore the data, after all.
If you want to learn more about Time Machine, Pondini is an excellent resource.

  • Time Machine on FireWire drive not recognized

Got an iMac with a FireWire drive set up as a TimeMachine volume.
In addition, I have a MBP, connected to the network via Wifi (Airport Extreme).
Under Snow Leopard, both Macs were able to do TimeMachine updates to the FireWire drive connected to the iMac.
Now, under Lion, the TimeMachine volume is still recognized and functional (i.e. successful backup) for the iMac, but not visible anymore for the MBP.
The MBP can't see the TimeMachine volume, let alone back up to it.
    What gives ?
Is this perhaps a network or access authorization issue ?
    Thanks.

Ok, so here some more information.
iMac (Lion) with connected FW HD, thus hosts the TimeMachine volumes, connected via Ethernet to AirportExtreme
MBP (Lion), connected via WLAN to AirportExtreme
    Connecting FROM iMac to MBP:

    Terminal SSH: OK
Finder - Go - Connect to Server: OK
    Connecting FROM MBP to iMac:
Sidebar - Shared computers: Error "Connection failed"
    Terminal SSH: OK
Finder - Go - Connect to Server: Error "There was a problem connecting to the server"
I'm really beginning to think my MBP Lion install is borked.

  • Please Help! - Cannot Access Or See External USB/Firewire Drive

Can anyone help or advise me as I’m really at a loss as how to fix a problem I have with my external hard drive and OX 10.4.6.
I had just completed a fresh install of OS X on my PowerPC iMac G5 using the “Erase & Install” feature.
Everything had gone extremely well, all my applications and settings had been re-set as I normally have them (I made backups) and was able to access my external hard disk, which is a Maxtor OneTouch USB/FireWire 250 GB model.
I then setup a second account for my brother, which I setup as a “Standard” account.
When I then went to access some of the files on my external disk and tried to copy them over to my Desktop, it refused me permission and said that I had to ask the permission of the “Owner’ which it said was Steve (my Brother) which was strange because as I said his account was only setup as a standard account whereas I had an administrator account (and am the main user of the computer).
I went into the Steve's account and looked at the Permissions information using the “Get Info” dialogue box. This showed that the owner was indeed Steve, so I changed it to my Name (Andrew) went back to my account, and found could no longer see the external disk at all.
Returning to Steve’s account I checked the permissions again, and asked it to ignore permissions.
But now I cannot see or access the disk at all in either account, it just does not show up on the desktop or in the Finder Sidebar.
The strange thing is I can see it in “Disk Utility” but when I ask it to either verify or Repair the Disk permissions, it reports that they are all or OK and “no repairs were necessary”.
I have tried connecting the disk with both types of connection - USB2 and the Firewire drive, and the results are exactly the same, the drive is not visible on the Desktop or the Finder Sidebar, but is visible to Disk Utility.
The disk is formatted as a ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled) drive
Can anyone please tell me how I can get my external disk to show on my computer again, as ALL my backup documents and programs are on the disk, and most of the data cannot be replaced.
Would doing a complete fresh install of the OS X operating system fix this as a last resort?
I hope someone can advise, as I really am desperate.
    Thanks

Yes, I didn't think it was very good either!
You are correct in I should have said "Repair Disk" - Verify Permissions is not available on the maxtor drive ( it is dimmed) in Repair Disk.
Until now, the drive has worked perfectly, and I did not install any of Maxtors software when I originally connected the drive to this system, I just formatted it as a Mac Extended and it worked great. It was only after the fresh Erase & Install - even then it worked fine. It was only when I created a new account that the problem started.
What I have done is get hold of a demo version of a program called "Mac Drive 6" which allows you to read any Mac formatted disk or drive on a Windows system, - fortunately i still have my Windows XP Pro system which I have also connected to my home network.
So for the next four days (the length of the demo) I can access all of my files on the disk and copy them to my Windows system.
This is really great because I have all my data and images back which were my biggest concern.
I thought I might get another drive anyhow, and when I have everything backed up on a new drive and on the Windows system, I can then reformat the Maxtor drive and start afresh with it.
Thanks for all your help anyhow.

  • Connecting to networked hard drives via XP

I've got an iMac 400 running OS 10.3.9 that has 2 external firewire drives. It's pretty much a server for my 2 Mac laptops on an Airport Express network.
I'm trying to connect to these HD's through Bootcamp running XP Professional on my MBP. I can access the iMac's hard drive, but the 2 externals I can't. On the Mac side I have no problem accessing them.
Any ideas as to how to acces these drives in XP? Is it an XP thing or a setting thing on my iMac. Thanks.

It would work if you had:
A router with a USB port and a disk sharing feature (my ISP's router does)
An Apple Airport Extreme or Time Machine, because they have USB ports and a disk sharing feature
A Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, or you can buy an adapter that just puts a hard drive on the home network
Another computer that you can plug the disk into and then turn on file sharing enabled for that volume
Note that some devices might not share Mac-formatted disks, so do the research.

  • 2 iMacs sharing a Firewire Drive

Is is possible to have my 2 iMacs share the same external Firewire drive via Firewire? I have an ethernet hub but it's not quite fast enough for what I need. I want both iMacs using the same hard drive thru firewire... thanks

I'm wondering if there is any software to create a hub or a network drive out there so I can use this drive on 2 machines?

  • HELP! Firewire Drives Unmounting by themselves.

I have a small workgroup with a G4/800 server with two FireWire drives connected. One of the drives contains ALL of the organizations files and is shared over the network using the SharePoints software. The other Firewire drive is just a backup drive which is used by Retrospect. What is happening is the users will frequently find the firewire shares mounted over the network on their machines will disconnect and users will receive an alert telling them that the network volume is no longer available or something. When we go to the server we find the Firewire drives are no longer mounted on the desktop. Otherwise, the machine is running normally. Trying to remount the drives usually does not work and I have found that the only surefire way to get them back is to turn the drives off, restart the machine, then turn the drives on. After that, they will mount fine and once again become available to the clients' machines.
I am at a loss as to what would be causing these volumes to unmount or eject themselves. Can anyone help me to troubleshoot this?

External hard drive spontaneously unmounted? Try these tips:
NEW FIRMWARE: Try updating your external hard drive's firmware, which is available from your drive manufacturers Web site--or just use VersionTracker's (www.versiontracker.com) search function to find it. Be sure to back up your data before applying the update, and carefully follow the manufacturers instructions.
OUT OF iSIGHT: If you're using an iSight camera while you're using a FireWire drive, the camera may be interfering with the drive's ability to stay mounted. Try temporarily disconnecting your iSight and moving it to a separate FireWire port. If you have multiple FireWire devices, try using a FireWire hub.
POWER PROBLEM: A faulty power adapter could be causing your drive to unmount. Your drive may not be getting enough juice to stay on, causing the drive to turn off and thereby unmounting it from your Mac. Alternately, the power adapter may not be providing a steady amount of power, causing your drive to turn on and off. Try replacing the adapter. If you can't get a replacement adapter from the hard drive manufacturer, try your local electronics store. Just make sure the adapter you choose has the same connector and input/output voltage. you can find the input/output voltage on the adapter itself.

  • OF can't see external bootable Firewire drive on restart

I've installed OS X 10.5 on an external Firewire drive via the optical drive on my Powerbook, however I can't get the computer to boot from this drive, regardless of whether I set it as the startup disk in System Preferences or by booting from the OS X install DVD and selecting it as the startup disk from there. The drive mounts fine in both OS X from the system drive and is visible from the OS X Installer.
If I Option restart to get a list of bootable devices, it doesn't appear at all.
I've reset the PMU, reset the NVRAM in Open Firmware and reset the PRAM and NVRAM by pressing CommandOption+PR.
I've changed FW cables, used the other port on the drive, changed the drive setting from slave to CS all to no avail.
I can boot my 15" MBPro from this external drive without a problem.
I'm unsure if this is related, but if I leave the Powerbook off for an extended period, when I restart it, it has forgotten the time and date, and can't seem to remember the airport network password either. Is there some PRAM battery which has crapped out?
    What is going wrong??

Well it definitely sounds like you need a new clock battery. Unfortunately I doubt that is related to the hard drive issue. But for now try replacing the battery and reply back if the problem persists.
