Networking G4 tower to my imac

I just got an old G4 tower and I would like to be able to use it as an external drive (storage, back up and maybe run some software?) through the monitor of my imac. I don't have a keyboard or monitor for the G4. But I'd like be able to use it without a lot of fuss. I know about FireWire target disk mode, but would I be able to use USB or ethernet cables without having to hold down the "T" everytime I boot up? Thanks!

Hi,
You can control the G4 from your iMac, access the desktop, run applications, etc. It should run headless (no monitor) but if not there's an adapter (~$20) that will allow it to do so. You will need a keyboard though to startup and login. You'll also need to connect your current monitor to install the software.
Install vine server (freeware) on the server.

Install Chicken of the VNC (freeware) on the iMac.

You can either connect the two directly with an ethernet cable or through a router. By launching both applications you can control the G4 as though you were sitting at the keyboard in front of it.

  • Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
    Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

  • Network problem with one particular iMac in a home network

I want to report a problem involving one particular iMac (2008 Al 24").
On my home network (Apple Airport Extreme and Express extensions, about five Macs and couple of iDevices), all other Macs can see and connect to each other as well as printing to the networked Brother printer without problem.
However, on one particular iMac, I can see all other Macs, can set Brother printer as default with green dot next to it in Print Preference Pane, but I can not connect to other macs, nor print to the printer. Meanwhile, the iMac can get on the internet without any problem. I checked Share Preference Pane and all settings are same as other macs.
The iMac used to work flawlessly until recently, and I first noticed the problem because I could not print, getting a message the printer can not be found (and the dots turn yellow for a while then went back to normal green). Then, I found neither the iMac, nor other macs on the network can connect to each other, even though I can see all of them in Finder.
I opened Apple Remote Network on my own mac, and I can see and connect all other shared macs, but this iMac's status showed not online, even though the IP adress is valid. As a results, no other macs can connect to the iMac, either. It seems to be a problem with the intranet only, not internet.
One more thing, about a month ago, the iMac popped out a warning about network name, saying the old name was in use (conflict) in the network, so I have to change it in Share Pane. Not sure if this is related to the intranet problem.
Reboot and repaired permission several times, no change. Hate to reinstall everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Another update:
For unknown reason, my iMac was suddenly back onto the home "intranet". It can be accessed by my MacBook Air through Finder Connect, and can also be seen by Apple Remote Desktop.
However, printing is still a problem while other macs have no problem printing to the same printer. Whenever I send a print task, either Word document, or other programs such as GraphicConverter image, the iMac tried to connect to the default printer, but failed, and wanted to try again in 30 seconds 9and continued to fail). Meanwhile, the green dot next to the printer selection turned to yellow in Preference Pane. But as soon as I cancel the print job, the printer status went back to normal green.
The printer is a Brother color laser HL-4070CDW, connected through wireless (g only), with it own DHCP but specific IP address. I printed out a setting for the printer and all looks normal, and all other macs can print to it without problem. Other macs can also get access to the printer profile, and check inks copy counts, etc, but the iMac cannot.
Only thing changed since last post was a new update for Apple Airport firmware (to 7.5.2 I think). So my problem is still half solved: can connect to other macs on the same network, but still not be able to print.

  • How can I avoid syncing network preferences between iPhone and iMac (mini) ?

In my current setup, my iMac mini and iPhone synchronise the WIFI networks that I joined on my Phone. I would like to turn this feature off. I want my iMac to always connect to the same network. I would like to keep using the other iCloud services though (Mail, Calendar, Etc...)
Can anyone point me to the settings or configuration steps to either fix the wifi network on an iMAc or to switch this feature off in iCloud?
    Background:
I run Yosemite 10.10.1 on an iMac mini and IOS 8.0.2 on my iPhone 5S
    What I tried:
Manually removed the irrelevant networks from the wifi list under System Preferences... | Network | Advanced...
Did not work, Networks got included in the list again once I join them on my iPhone.

Just download the updates via iTunes on your Mac and then sync your iPhone to update them.
You cannot simply create a Wi-Fi connection between your computer and your iPhone, you must have a Wi-Fi router or access point to connect to.

  • Vmware fusion 5.0.2 cannot connect to network on my brand new iMac '27 late 2012

    Dear friends,
I have tried to install Windows 8 (x64bit) Pro., Windows XP, and CentOS 6.0 using vmware fusion 5.0.2 over my brand new iMac '27 late 2012. However, neither one can connect to the Internet. There was no problem with the same installation on my iMac 2011.
The network board recognized by Windows 8 is Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection.
In the folder of vmware fusion's setting files on Mac OS, I found a file called Windows 8 x64.vmx, and
there is a line as follows.
    ethernet0.virtualDev ="e1000e"
Any friend has the same problem or can give me some hints?

  • Networking a PC to an iMac

I recently purchased an iMac desktop. I already had a Dell Windows XP computer. I just got Broadband (through Comcast). I got a wireless router. I have the iMac on the network that I created. I also purchased a USB adaptor for my Dell. I cannot get it on the network. It says that it is communicating; however, I cannot get online with it. I am a total novice, as far as the networking and the iMac. I have only had the iMac for about a month now. I have looked online for help; however, the things I have tried are not working. Please help!

Kindly mention the model of your Network Adapter and your Wireless Router...Also let me know what error do you get when you attemt to connect to your network...

  • Mac Mini can't see the same wireless networks as a Aluminum 24" Imac ....

I have a question for ya'll. Is there any reason why my new Mac mini 2.0g system can't see the wireless networks that my Imac can?
What I mean, is that I can see two Networks with my Imac:
    1. Mine
    2. Other networks around me.
On the Mini, using 10.4 or 10.5 My mini can only see my wireless network. Which is only 1 foot away from the mini (and Imac).
It has been suggested to me that my antenna is bad ... Are there ways to test this? Or is it just inherit for the mini?

The Mini has a much smaller antenna (the size of a larger postage stamp) -- and it is located in the back upper right corner, as you face the mini from the front.
The antenna is less capable than the larger antenna in the iMac, and it is more easily blocked. Make sure nothing is between it and your wifi router.

  • Trying to network my mini Mac to Imac behind FIOS Router. How?

I just purchased a Mac Mini for my basement.
I am trying to network it with my IMac.
Both sit behind a FIOS Router.
I have tried using the File Sharing capability on my IMac but it seems to allow then disallow.
On my mini-mac I can sometimes see/find the Share capabality and other times it does not pop up on the left bar menu.
    HelP?

can both of the mac's find the router on itself, i.e., have a network connection (to the internet for example) that doesn't drop away after some time?

OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301183
With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to a 10.4 or some later OSes machine.
"Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer. The Network preference pane in Mac OS X 10.4 and later still offers the AppleTalk checkbox, but it is for browsing AppleTalk-advertised resources and zones. The subsequent connection must be over TCP/IP."

  • Help setting up small home network with PC and an imac!!!?

I have an imac in my room, and my mother has a JP PC in her room across the house. We have a router and modem on her computer(I connect to the internet through the router signal)
I just recently bought a new printer. It is a wifi printer. I was told by a friend that I need to setup a small netowrk so all the computers/printers in the house can talk to one another. Because right now my printer is installed and connected to the router signal (but my computer does not reconize it to print....)
I started a small network on my moms PC...but when I can't make a network CD like it tells me to because my computer is a Mac....how do I continue to setup this network? Can I set it up first on my mac as well???PLEASE HELP! I want to use my printer!

You can just connect the WRT54G wireless router’s LAN port to BEFSR41 router’s LAN port by using a network cable as specified in this configuring wireless router as access point article, after that can connect other computers to that wireless router with or without cable. Finally do more test to check the performance. Hope it helps.

  • Connecting Power Mac 9500/200 to network to transfer data to iMacs

I have recently had two of my macs stolen an old G5 Power mac and a new iMac 27" I used to use the G5 as a go-between to transfer files from my Power Mac 9500/200 to my network because the PM 9500/200 could not see the iMacs and vice versa. Is there any  way of connecting them now, I believe there were some problems with  networking such an old system before is this still the case?

Very little that is compatible with the 9500 is with the 10.7 or later Macs.

I have gotten the pc and imac talking to the network on the airport extreme 802.11 but I just can't figure out how to tie these two together where I can share files. I have networked PCs togeather before and had no problem. You just assign a name to the workgroup and give that name to both computer and thats it. I just cant figure where to assign the workgroup name to the mac. I just seam to be going around in circles.

  • Network printing problems using an iMac as the server

I am running an iMac OS 9 computer as a server. There are three computers (an iMac, an iBook both running OS 9, and a Powerbook G4, running OS 10.4) connected to the server via ethernet.
Here is the problem: all three computers have been printing from the network printer for over 2 years with no problems whatsoever. As of late, all three stations are attempting to print unsuccessfuly with a message stating that the document cannot be printed because the printer could not be found. The error message asks if you would like to cancel printing or try again. After trying again the document successfully prints (sometimes after one attempt, other times after several attempts). The chooser is recognizing the printer and all settings seem to be correct. I have notice that when selecting the chooser the printer icon does not show up immediately. There appears to be a bit of a delay before the network recognizes it. The printing funtion will work, it is just a bit frustrating that you must sometimes make more than one attempt to print. It does not occur everytime you attempt to print, only most of the time.
One more note, in conjuntion with this error, I have noticed that other applications running through the server will run lightning fast and then all of a sudden will seem to run very slow. When working within an application, windows will appear to freeze for a short time and them resume normally.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  • Upgraded from 10.6 to 10.6.2, network stopped working on an iMac.

Went to the Apple store yesterday, bought Snow Leopard. Installed it, everything seemed to work fine at 10.6.0. Did Software Update, it said there was a 10.6.2 update (guess it combined 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 into one?), so I downloaded it, it installed and rebooted. Ever since then, I can not get networking to work, using either cabled gigabit ethernet, or wireless to a Time Capsule wireless access point.
Trying rebooting several times, disabling/re-enabling networking, no help. It sees the router, gets a local ip address, can ping the router, but can't get to the outside world.
This is an older iMac, 24", "white plastic soapdish" model, before the newer models came out. I'm hoping someone can provide some other hints.

You mentioned having a network problem. Regardless, being able to get to the outside world is a common problem under Sno. Adding a new location has worked for some.
Go System Preferences > Network > Location.
Edit location (whatever name you want).
Click + and then click done.
    Try your browser.
And, here is another possibility that has worked for others.
Go Finder > Your HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration.
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to your Desktop.
    Restart.
    Try your browser.
    Try something a little different.
Go Finder > Your HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration.
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to your Desktop.
Go System Preferences > Network > Delete all locations, and use Automatic.
    Restart.
    Try your browser.
You may have to reconnect to your wireless network if applicable. And, you may need to go System Preferences > Sharing and re-enter your computer's name. Check what name is given in sharing before following my instructions. If problems develop, then your can move the original folder back where it started—overwriting any folder recreated.
Finally, try deleting any KeyChain entries related to the apps, etc., you mention.
