Networking iBook with iMac

I have an iMac G5 connected to an ADSL high speed internet connection. I recently purchased an iBook for travel and wanted to connect it to my iMac wirelessly - for internet and email. However, after following the support on the Mac site and trying to connect the two I don't seem to be able get any signal to the iBook.
Questions: Does the iMac have the ability to transmit signals with its airport card? Do I need to have a separate external Airport station to make this happen? Can I access the internet and mail through this wireless connection? From all that I read and was told it should be fairly easy but I just haven't been able to make it happen. Thanks.

Hi Peter,
Here're the instructions for sharing an internet connection from Mac Help.
Sharing your Internet connection
If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can share its connection with other computers on your local network.
For example, if your computer is connected to the Internet using a DSL modem and has an AirPort Card installed, you can share the DSL connection with other AirPort-equipped computers.
1      Open System Preferences, click Sharing, and then click Internet.
2      Choose a network port from the "Share your connection from" pop-up menu.
3      Select "Built-in Ethernet" or AirPort depending on which computers will share your Internet connection.

  • Trying to connect iBook with iMac with Airport and Ethernet

I have just purchased a wireless router, and all works fine connecting to the internet from the iBook (with Airport) and via an ethernet cable on the iMac.
To share files from the iMac on the iBook I have no problems when the two computers are connected with the Ethernet cable either directly or through the router. However, when I try to connect to the iMac from the iBook using Airport (iMac still connected with cable to router), although the iMac icon shows, when I press 'connect' I get the message "no response from the server. Please try again".
What else do I need to do / what settings on which computer do I need to alter? All advice gratefully received! iMac 9.2.2 / iBook G4 OS 10.3.9 Mac OS 9.2.x

Jaelke, Welcome to the discussion area!
More than likely your wireless router isn't bridging AppleTalk from the wireless network to the wireless network.
From your iBook, try typing in the IP address of the iMac when attempting to connect to the iMac.

  • Network iBook to iMac booted with ext. HD in 10.4.3 not work

I recently installed OSX 10.4.3 onto an external HD (LaCie) connected by Firewire to my old iMac, (I will henceforth call it "old iMac") that has only a 10GB HD. I kept the old OSX10.3.9 on the internal HD of the old iMac.
I can network thru a Lychsys router from either my iBook G4 or my other iMac to the old iMac as long as the old iMac is booted using the OSX10.3.9, but I cannot connect to it from those machines when the old iMac is booted thru the external HD in OSX10.4.3
From the old iMac I am able to network to the 2 other computers, ie their files can be seen from the old iMac, whether it is booted in OSX10.3.9 from the internal HD or inOSX10.4.3 in the external HD
I checked IP settings, and they are same in both OS's, also ran diagnostics undr TCP/IP. No help.
The problem appears to be associated with the OSX10.4.3 installed on the external HD.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your reply.
    1) I tried renaming /private/etc/smb.conf to smb-OLD.conf and restarting. I still couldn't hit the server, and when I ran testparm after that, it said that it couldn't find smb.conf. So it didn't create a new smb.conf file. (Please excuse me; I'm not very technical and I barely understood your reply!)
    2) I also tried turning windows sharing off and back on; still can't hit the server.
    3) I removed SMB in Directory Access, rebooted and re-enabled it, but I don't have any workgroup or wins settings to fill in. When I boot from my 10.4.0 drive (which IS able to log on to the server), workgroup is set to Workgroup, and wins is blank.
When I run testparm booted from my 10.4.0 drive, the settings are exactly the same as what I see booted from my 10.4.5 drive.
This is driving me crazy. Thanks again for your help, and again, any advice is welcome.

  • Networking MacBook with iMac

Apologies if this is the wrong area of the forums....
I have a lovely MacBook, and I have a fabulous iMac (24" running Leopard). They both currently live in the same room, but the iMac has some external harddrives connected that host my house music collection.
I'm sure that there's a simple way of doing this but I've not worked it out yet, but is there a way of getting the two of them talking wirelessly so that I can access the files on the external drives with my MacBook?
Thanks for reading and hopefully helping!

On your iMac (or both computers if you want to share both ways) go to system preferences>sharing and check all the items you wish to share with the other computers on your network. Also make sure there is a name for the computer. The one item in particular that you're needing to check, specific to your post, is 'File Sharing'. Now depending on how many accounts and their account types, you may have to determine the access allowed. You can change users and their access in the right side of the window. Find this information in the window, "Other users can connect......", you need to note the afp://numbers.
Now to access the computer from another computer, if you have Leopard when you open a Finder window the computer will probably show under 'Shared'. Just select it and then 'Connect As'. If you're using Tiger, open Finder and go to Go Menu>Connect To Server. In the field Server Address you need to enter in the information you got previously (afp://numbers). Then it will ask for User Name and Password and then what disk to mount (could be external drive, internal drive, home folder, etc).

  • Connecting iBook with iMac and onto the internet

va3tm, Welcome to the discussion area!
So your iMac is connected via Ethernet to the internet? Open the iMac's Sharing preference pane, click on Internet, and enable sharing Ethernet to AirPort.
If you the firewall enabled on the iMac, in the iMac's Sharing preference pane, click on Services, and enable Personal Web Sharing.

  • Networking iBook and iMac problem?

I connect both computers with LAN cable on the Ethernet ports. Then I turn on File Sharing on both computers, then I Go and Connect to Server. Yet, they don't see each other! The iBook is using Panther 10.3.9 and I gave the computers names too. This is my first time trying to connect two computers. Whats the problem? Ant tips will be welcome.
    Thanks!
    Luis

On each Mac go to System Preferences > Network and make sure AppleTalk is switched on on the Ethernet port.

  • Network WinXP with iMac

Does anyone have experience connecting Windows and Mac machines. Can I connect an XP machine (or 98SE for that matter) and my iMac just by using an ethernet cable? If so, I guess, since there's only one port on the back of the machine, that means I'd have to unplug from my cable router every time I want to do this(?). It's a naive quiestion, but can I just buy some sort of splitter or something for the cable? Any and all recommendations would certainly be appreciated and respected.

    1. Yes. See this page for information on sharing files.
    2. Purchase a router and hook the cable modem into that; next, plug both computers into the router.

  • AirTunes ok with Imac but nit Ibook?

    Hi
Setup - IbookG4 with AE and Airport Express in lounge plus Extreme in study next door with iMacG4 connected via ethernet - also Netgear DG834 - Imac updated to 10.4.3 - iBook updated lastweek with Airport 2005 1. but not yet to 10.4.3
All works OK with both machines - adsl / printing etc plus i can use iTunes/Airtunes from the iMac - but not the iBook (which is is the same room as the Airport Express).
iTunes shows the Express as available in the drop-down - not italisised.
Problem occured prior to the iBook Airport update - which is why i applied it - thinking it might cure the problem
    Any ideas???

    Hi
Sorry my description was a bit off!!
The IMac is situated in the study and is conected to the Airport Extreme Base Station via ethernet cable...
The iBook connects to the Airport Extreme via buit-in Airport Extreme card...
The Netgear 834 is connected to the Airport Extreme and shared by both machines...
I have one printer attached to the Extreme Base Station via USB and 2 further printers attached to the iMac again via USB
The Airport Express is situated in the lounge and is listed in the Airport Admin Utility under its own name and IP address
As stated above, all this lot has worked OK for some time until a day or so before I applied the 10.4.3 update to the iMac and the 2005 .1 Airport update to the iBook.
To repeat the only thing not working is being able to use Airtunes or Airfoil from the iBook - the iMac is ok in all respects.
And again, the Airport Express shows up in the drop-down on iTunes
Thanks hope this is a bit clearer!!!

iPad2 won't sync with iMac and only my iphone4 shows in the devices window on my iMac.  For some reason it will not detect my iPad via my wireless network!   The iPad will sync when plugged into the Mac however looses connection and disappears from the device window when unplugged.

You already have a wireless router or have just bought one, or do you have an ad hoc connection from iMac to AppleTV?
If things worked in the other location this all point to poor network performance/connectivity. It may be the connection is intermittently lost - small files transfer ok, but interruptions during longer transfers scupper the process.
Interference from cordless phone bases or microwaves (and neighbours devices) might also cause connectivity issues.
Signal strength bars are often not that useful, but will indicate connection to the main wireless device they connect to - so AppleTv may have a good connection to the router but a poor iMac connection to router is not displayed by AppleTV which only shows the connection to the first device in the chain.
You could consider some home mains newtorking plugs such as those made by Devolo but they usually have to be on the same mains ring.

  • How can i set up a wireless network from my iMac lion, with a windows 7??

I wish to setup a network from my iMac to my gf windows 7 laptop, but can't figure out how...

In order to do this you should have a router. Once you have a router and both computers on the network then you will need to turn on File Sharing on the Mac. You can locate Sharing in System Preferences - Sharing. On the PC it has a similar function but typical of MS Windows much more arcane and complex. First thing you will need to know is what version of MS Windows you have, then you can Google something like "File sharing OS X Lion with Windows 7" and you will find lots of instructions.

  • Cannot ping ibook with multiple admin accounts

i am trying to set up remote control across a LAN, and have had success with two iMac G5's controlled from my dual G5. the problem is that i can't connect to an iBook with exactly the same settings and firewall config.
in trying to troubleshoot, i have noticed that i can't ping the iBook, and the only thing i can think of that is different is that the iBook has two user accounts, both of which have admin privileges. could this be causing the problem?
if not, what else could i try? any suggestions, please?

I doubt very much that the problem is caused by having two user accounts with administrator privileges. I have several systems with multiple admin accounts and have never had them cause a problem with the network.
Since you can't even ping the iBook, that would seem to make it a problem with the OS or the network, not with Apple Remote Desktop, so you might have more luck getting suggestions if you ask in the networking forum in the appropriate Mac OS X area.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot connect to internet with iMac connected to airport via Ethernet

    Hi all,
Firstly please forgive if this problem has been posted before but unfortunately i haven't yet been able to find a solution to my problem.
I cannot seem to get my wireless network to work since updating my Airport to v5.7. I have reverted back to 5.6 but with no joy. OK, here's my setup - I have an iMac G5 1.8 which is connected to my airport via an ethernet cable (it is plugged into the correct port) and an iBook with an Airport card to connect wirelessly. The airprot is connected to my ADSL modem which is a D-Link 300T. When set up like this my iMac cannot connect to the internet even though my iBook can. When i take the4 iBook and Airport out of the equation my iMac connects fine to the internet via ethernet cable direct to my modem.
As i've said, as soon as i bring in the iBook and Airport the iMac cannot connect via airport extreme, even though the iBook can connect.
I have searched through the discussions looking for clues and answers. I have made sure that distrubute IP address is not checked and that internet sharing is off on my iMac but on on my iBook. I have tried all channels and all possible different settings on the airport admin utility but nothing works.
I hope i've given enough information to give a clear indication what is wrong, if not please ask and i will try my best to answer. Any help would be much appreciated so i can convince my girlfriend that buying my iBook was not "a waste of money!".
    Many thanks in advance,
    Carl.

    Same questions as Paul.
Open up the Network System Pref on the iMac G5.
If you pick Show: "Network Status", what do you see ? Be precise.
If you change Show: to "Built-in Ethernet", what do you see on the TCP/IP, PPPoE and Ethernet tabs ? Again, be precise.
On the Network Status, you should see a green mark next to Built-In Ethernet, which should be at the top. It should also give you an IP address and tell you you are connected to the Internet. Well it would if it was working, so "say what you see".

  • Simple way of transferring files beween iBook and iMac?

So far, I have burned CDs to transfer files back and forth between the two machines. I also am considering using a portable back up drive.
I'd prefer a simple transfer of files between the machines via fire wire cable!
However, I have been discouraged so far to explore the "networking" solutions further, because of the (for me) complicated protocol and addressing issues in the networking preference panel....
A simple solution would make me happy!
    Thanks,
    PP

If you boot the iBook into FireWire target disk mode it will act as an external FireWire drive.
Then all you need to do is connect the iBook and iMac with a 6 pin to 6 pin FireWire cable. The iBook will appear on the iMac's desktop as a hard drive. You can then easily drag and drop files between the 2 machines.

  • Auto Network reconnect with Airport Express - tried all solutions so far

My G4 quicksilver will not auto network reconnect after sleep, or after turning Airport off and on again.
    * I tried deleting and re-issuing a new LOCATION and new WPA mentioned at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121824&tstart=150
    * I also tried deleting network and airport preferences.
    * I also made sure that I have the "distribute IP addesses" unchecked.
I still need to manually reconnect!
It used to work and show a nice scrolling network name when it found my network. After messing around with the AE configuration for another unrelated reason, this problem came up... OSX-4.2, without any change in months...
    Help?

I have an iBook & an iMac on an Airport Express Network with WPA2 password security. Both are running OS 10.4.3, & are current with all security updates etc.
I set up both computers according to the suggestions of "Topic: Tiger and Lost Wireless Network Connectivity" by Duane, Henry B, iFelix, Alan Macdougal, & Dr Smoke. I created New Locations for each computer.
The iBook, now auto-connects just fine, but for the life of me, I can't get it to work on the iMac. The iMac is 3 feet from my Airport Express; the iBook is downstairs. What do I try next?
