Networking imac with pc laptop

I've got an iMac G4 PowerPC with 1 Ghz. I don't have airport, but I do have a linksys wireless-g router. I've also got a wireless laptop PC that I would like to connect with my iMac, and the printer hooked up to my iMac.
How do I do this?

Go to  menu > System Preferences... > Sharing > and enable Printer sharing.
On the Linksys router you'll need to open Firewall ports TCP139, TCP445, TCP515 and TCP631. You'll also need to enable Bridging mode which puts the WiFi traffic on to Ethernet and vice versa.

I have IMAC wireless and Laptop wireless and PC wired to the same router(NETGEAR).The PC do appear on my list of SHARED. However I can not connect to them. Get a msg that I have to check the IP address or check with ADMIN. Is it somewhere in setting that I have forgotten to click on or...?

Networking imac with powe mac 604e - ethenet?

Hi i have an older power mac 604e computer
and i want to network it with a new
imac. Im trying to get my old files transferred onto my new computer. The old power mac has an old fashion scii connection and it does not have usb nor firewire so i thought the ethernet connection would be the best way.
this is just a one time transfer of data and i already have an ethernet cable. How do i set this up?

The 604e computer has to be running Mac OS 9 or OS X to be able to talk to your iMac running Tiger. You can try to connect the two computers via an ethernet cable and then configure things as follows here:

That page indicates that you can also get this to work with system 8.5 and 8.6 but I found those systems to drop connections alot. It may work without a crossover cable if the autosensing features of the ethernet ports work correctly. Lastly if you have an ethernet hub you can use that (with regular cables) instead of a crossover cable. Good luck and keep an eye on things as you may get drops anyway!

Networking iMac with Windows 8.1

I am running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4. I have successfully networked both iMac machines with my wife's Windows 8.1 laptop and can successfully share files between all three computers with only one exception.........The Windows 8.1 machine WILL ALLOW BOTH IMACS TO ACCESS FILES ON IT BUT IT WILL NOT CONNECT TO MY WIFE'S IMAC TO SHARE THE iMAC FILES ON THE PC. Even though both iMacs show up in the PC workgroup, when she tries to connect to her iMac it always returns the error "cannot connect, bad stub" . Any ideas?

I would try opening File Explorer on Win8.1 and entering the path to a shared folder on the iMac in the address bar. For example
\\iMacName\Downloads
When you press enter a window should appear asking for credentials. Enter the wife's account name and password. This will either connect to the Downloads folder or fail with an error. So what happens?

Sharing imac with HP laptop

I have a brand new IMac that I'd like to share with my HP laptop for printing only. I have checked the little box that says printer sharing, but of course it couldn't be that easy. When I print from my laptop I just get a falied to print message. I also am having a hard time printing directly from the Mac. It is recognizing the printer (an HP all-in-one) and will print a test page, but will only print the heading off the web pages that I need printed. I have all of the latest updates...any other suggestions??? Thanks!!

If you do not want your roommates to access your network, the only safe way is physical isolation....obviously that isn't really practical, so there are a few other alternatives. You could put a firewall between your network and the router. A firewall could consist of a Linux box with multiple NICs, or another router, with the WAN port connected to the existing router.
You could also seperate the ethernet ports on the existing router by moving one (or any number of them) into their own seperate VLANs. To do that, you would need to install 3rd PArty firmware on your router (DD-WRT) and follow the tutorial described at:

If I replace my desktop iMac with a laptop, can I still use the desktop as a screen on occasion?

I'm planning to replace my existing iMac and old MacBook with a new Macbook pro. This would be my first time without a dedicated desktop computer. I was wondering if it would be possible to easily hook up my laptop to the old iMac and use it as a larger monitor for those times I want the big screen.

If you have a Late 2009 or Mid 2010 iMac, buy a Mini DisplayPort cable to connect your MacBook Pro to the iMac, and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac. If you have a Mid 2011 or Late 2012 iMac, buy a Thunderbolt cable.
If you have an iMac which isn't compatible, use an application like ScreenRecycler, which allows you to use your iMac as an external display

Sharing a printer attached to an iMac with a laptop running windows 7

Hi, I have a an HP LaserJet P1005 running off my Mac - this is connected via USB. I have a laptop running Windows 7. I have printer sharing active on the Mac. The Mac can see the laptop but not connect to it. The laptop can not see the Mac. I simply want to be able to print to the LaserJet printer from the laptop but can't seem to be able to create the link. If anyone has a suggestion I would be extremely grateful. Thnx. Adam

If you download and install Bonjour for Windows, this will assist the Win7 laptop with locating the shared LJ on the Mac.

It sounds really unlikely though... You have to type in your password twice when setting up so you either:
made the same typo twice
the caps lock was on
You held down SHIFT during one of the letters
the keys have relocated because of different language keyboard layout
you simply forgot exactly what you typed.
Are you aware that passwords are case-sensetive? also, when using punctuation in passwords be aware that language localization of the keyboard can cause relocation of certain symbols like $ and € and * and ' which may make it impossible to retype the password correctly, if you are unaware of the correct way to type a certain puntuation symbol.

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

Network an iMac, PC and Laptop

Hi, I just purchased an iMac and want to network the new iMac, an existing Dell PC (w/XP Pro) and an existing Dell Laptop (w/XP Home). Currently I have a Belkin Wireless Pre-N Router that the PC and Laptop are networked on (to a cable modem). I'm wondering if I can use that configuration or should get the AirPort Extreme and go that route. Ultimately I would love to be able to share the printer and the external hardrive among the 3 computers. I don't mind investing in the new technology as long as I know it works and works well. I've done some research and I've officially confused myself. That's why I am here now. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks Matt, I have not tried to set up the iMac as of yet. Mainly because it has ot arrived yet! Hopefully tomorrow. It is the newer iMac with the Intel processor. I'm thinking that I do want both the printer and the external HD shared so I might go with the new AirPort Extreme.

Both the Belkin and the Airport Extreme will work
with all your computers, they just have different
configuration methods. The Belkin (I believe) does
not have the capability to share USB printers or hard
drives, so if that's a deal-breaker for you, go with
the Airport.
Have you tried to set up the iMac on your current
network yet?
Also, is your iMac one of the old CRT models
(specific to this forum), or a new Intel model (which
has its own forum here).

Best way to network an imac with an ibook

I was hoping someone could recommend the best way to network my G4 imac with my wife's ibook laptop. I want us to be able to share drives (internal and extrernal), internet, and a printer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming you don't have the Airport Base Station yet? That's pretty much the most convenient way I know of, as mere file sharing makes it pretty tricky, if not impossible, to get access to external volumes mounted on, say, your G4. Caveat: only a USB-capable external HD can be hooked up to the base station.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.
