Networking Inquiry; Connect to Mac (From Vista)

Im using a macpro with both Leopard and XP on it; and I'm looking for a way using either or of the above OS' to have a friend using Windows Vista Home Premium to connect to my computer/network from a different state.
I wanted to share some of my projects and files I've been working on, kind of like an ftp thing. so they can transfer them to their computer.
is there any easy way for someone (who would require a straight forward description) to getting it set up properly?
thank you!

This is entirely possible. The question really is how far do you want to go with this because that will determine the path (and the relative ease/difficultly) of setting it up.
So the questions are:
Is this one-way (remote user only downloads files) or two-way (wants to upload files, too)?
If it's one-way then just use the built-in web server (System Preferences -> Sharing -> Personal Web Sharing) and drop your files in either /Library/WebServer/Documents or your ~/Sites folder
Then setup port forwarding on your router to forward connections on port 80 to your machine.
Now the remote user can access http://<your public IP>/ (or http://<your public IP/~username if you put the files in your Sites folder)
From there the user should see a list of the files in your directory and can click to download.
Obviously this only works for one-way (downloads). If you want uploads, too, it gets a lot more complex, so post back if that's what you need.

  • Connect to Mac from Windows Vista issue

Hi I want to view some files that are on my Mac from my PC (Windows Vista). Here's what I did so far: On my Mac I enabled file sharing, I selected the folders that I want to share.
Now here's the part that confuses me, it asks me to add the users to share the folder with. but do I enter the username and password for my mac or is it the username and password for my PC? What I did was add all the accounts that are on my mac.
I then went on my PC, clicked on network, I can see the mac computer, I can also see my username and folder, I click on it, I then see the drop box but when I click on it I get a network error message that says "Windows cannot access Users public folder drop box".
I don't know what setting I need to enable since I'm very new to this. I can access the files that are on my PC from my Mac just fine. but I can't access the files that are on my Mac from my PC. Do I need to create a new mac account?
I also noticed that when I click on the mac computer from my PC in Network, it doesn't ask me to enter a username and password, could that be the reason I can't connect? Please help.

The user names and passwords are the same on both systems. That is not the issue.
The issue is that each user can only connect to the mac from their windows system when they physically log on as user at the mac.
Otherwise it will not even show up in their network neighborhood.
If I boot up the mac and log in as the user, I can connect to the mac from my windows system but the other two users can't.
Likewise if one of them logs in as the user on the mac, I cannot connect to it from my windows system.

  • Connect to Mac from Windows

I have three Windows systems and one Mac.
Currently, to connect to my Mac (OSX Tiger) from Windows I have to be logged into the Mac as that user on the Windows machine.
I have three users that access the Mac. All are setup on the Mac as users. All are setup on the Windows systems as users.
But if John logs into the Mac and Betty tries to access the Mac from her computer she cannot. If John tries to access the Mac from his Windows system he can.
Does anyone know how to setup the Mac so that any of the three users can connect to it from Windows regardless of who is logged in?
I tried to set the group to staff for all the users public folders but that did not help.

  • Can't connect to E1200 from Vista Laptop.

I recently installed an E1200 router for a friend.  We both have HP laptops running Vista.  Mine connects wirelessly ok but his doesn't.  The Network and Sharing Center on his shows a connection between the laptop and the router and the router is identified correctly.  But the link is broken between the router and the internet.  I did a little troubleshooting before I ran out of time.
I set up the router using the the Cisco Connect cd.  Didn't have a thumb drive so I went to each laptop and added a wireless profile for the router using the same Security Type (WPA Personal), Encryption Type (AES), and Security Key.  Mine connects, his doesn't.
IPCONFIG/ALL shows that both laptops got IP addresses in the DHCP range of the router.  The DHCP client list on the router shows the same.  I tried rebooting the router, deleteing and re-adding the profiles, same results.  Aside from IP and mac  addresses the IPCONFIG /All's are identical.
I won't be able to get out there for a few days. I have a list of things to try and was hoping someone would have other suggestions.
His laptop is at Vista SP1 and mine is at SP2 plus other patches because I run automatic updates.  I intend to bring his laptop to the latest patch levels.  Our wireless adapter models are also different so I'll download the latest drivers for his.
I'll update the router firmware if necessary and set the router back to it's default configuration.
I'll use Cisco Connect to reconfigure the router and change the SSID and this time create setup keys.
I'll configure both laptops using the setup key and see if they connect.
I've read something about a DHCP broadcast flag problem between some routers and Vista.  There is a registry edit fix for the problem from Microsoft, but it doesn't seem to apply in this case because the IP addresses are assigned correctly
Any help will be most appreciated.
    Solved!

Great suggestion, I never thought of trying WEP.
I don't remember the exact name of the adapter on my friends computer, but your question prompted me to look through the HP wireless forum and I found that there are compatability issues with the Vista Atheros ( which sounds familiar) driver and and the E series routers.  There is a driver update from HP available to fix the problem and I'll try that also if the adapter is Atheros.  I think I'll take Vista at least to SP2 first.
The adapter on my laptop, which works, is an Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG.
I'll get out there the end of the week and update you with my progress.

  • After upgrade can no longer connect to Mac from Windows

I have a wireless network (Linksys) with 2 iMacs, Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP workstations. I have file sharing between the Windows and Mac computers. After upgrading I can no longer see the shared folders on the upgraded iMac from the Windows box. I cannot even ping the iMac by node name, but I can ping it by IP address so it is recognizable on the network. I cannot connect by IP address, however.
I have file and printer sharing enabled on the Leopard iMac. What can I do to restore the former connection?

Thank you! That partially solved the problem. I can now see the Leopard Mac and can open my user folder on it. However, the subfolders give an error saying they are not accessible - permission denied. I have gone through the folders and set all of them to Shared, but this did not make them accessible.

  • Windows 7 won't print pdf to network printer connected to Mac

    Hi,
I have a printer connected to my Mac and have shared the printer on my home network.  I can print documents from a Windows 7 computer on my network but when I try to print a pdf from adobe reader it will not print, or ever go to the print queue.
    Any help appreciated.

Thanks Michael, have tried that, no luck. I will wait a couple of days to see if any other solutions come up (or if anyone else is suddenly having the same issue) before reinstalling Acrobat.
[OK just tried sending a PDF attachment directly from another program (MYOB) through to Mac Mail and had the same problem so it is not an Acrobat issue afterall, it is a Mac Mail or Mac OS X issue. Will post this on the Apple site.]
I have resolved the MYOB issue, it was working just painfully slow. So I still have the original Acrobat Pro PDF to Mac Mail issue if anyone knows of any solutions please?

  • Connect to Mac from iPhone?

There seems to be quite a few programs/services for Windows users to connect to their desktop PC from their iPhone, but I'm yet to see similar for the Mac. The Google 'telekinesis' project seems to be the only one. Are there any solutions further advanced (in terms of development) than that? What about using Apple's Remote Desktop?
    Grant.

Yes, it does, but the application is a native Windows app, so it must be run under boot camp/parallels/fusion.

  • Network - Windows connecting to Mac printer.

I'm having trouble getting Windows XP to print to the Mac shared printer - It says its getting the drivers, and then the printer shows up in options, but when I print to it, the printer just never prints.
How do I get it to actually print?
    Brian

Well, I finally got everything working last night, thanks to (a) the wonderfully clear step-by-step directions by iFelix (although they should add a quick word about port :631); very helpful comments from this forum; and sheer persistance in dealing with Windows XP.
    Here's what I did wrong:
    1. Omitted and then mis-typed the port number after the IP address.
    2. Didn't check the signal strength of the 802.11g network (it was strong enough to see the Mac, but bizzarly not strong enough to see the printer attached to the Mac). Everything worked fine as soon as got an increased signal level.
    3. Didn't read far enough ahead in the instructions and downnloaded the drivers for the Lexmark Z35 instead of using the Apple drivers as recomended by iFelix.
    4. Forgot that under Windows you have to "Uninstall" - you can't just drag something into "Recycle" - so I couldn't understand for the longest time why XP kept finding the Lexmark drivers even after I'd emptied the Recycle bin.
Bottom line. "Thank you, iFelix" for your very detailed instructions. I only wish that Apple would make their own "Help" as clear and detailed.

  • Problems printing to shared printer connected to Mac from XP Machine

I have been trying to get printer sharing set up so that a Windows XP laptop can print to the HP LaserJet 3030 connected to an old iMac running 10.4.4. I have installed bonjour for Windows on the XP machine and can successfully run the Bonjour Printer Wizard. When I go to print to the printer though it the print button is greyed out and Windows says "Before you can print, you need to select a printer." I have tried the HP 3030 PCL 6 driver as well as a Generic postscript, no luck either way. Any ideas?

I resently purchase the Laserjet 3030. I haven't been able to print consistently, sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't connect to the computer. I understand that you have this printer connected to a Mac. Could you tell me how you did it? Which driver you are you using?
Additionally, I haven'e been able to use the scanner at all. I found on the internet that the scanner is not compatible with Mac. Are you using the scanner?
    I have an old eMac G4 800Mhz running Mac os X 10.4.6

  • Can't print from IE 8 after upgrading from Vista to Windows 7

My laptop (HP Elitebook 8530w) uses two HP printers: Color LaserJet CP3525x (at work) and Deskjet 6940 (at home). Both printers are accessed across a local network.
I recently upgraded from Vista Enterprise to Windows 7 Enterprise.
Everything still prints fine (from Word, Adobe Reader, Windows Photo Viewer, etc.), except for IE 8! When I try to print a web page from IE, it prints only the page header, and otherwise the sheet is empty. This symptom occurs on both printers. (And of course this worked fine before the upgrade.)
Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

If anyone else is having this problem, I found the solution on another forum (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/InternetExplorer/thread/920588e5-ccc4-4e24-83d6-606...).
Specifically, the following steps solved the problem:
    1. If it doesn't already exist, create a directory named "Low" in your directory "C:\Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Local\Temp\".
    2. From a command prompt, issue this command:  ICACLS C:\Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Local\Temp\Low /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low

You need to turn on Printer Sharing on both the PC and OS X. I can't help you on Vista but in OS X it's System Preferences - Sharing - check the Printer Sharing box.

  • Why can I not connect to my MAC from a PC on the same network

I have a correctly formatted external HD mounted on my MacBook Air (Mac OSX version 10. 7. 5. Lion) and can access it without problems from my MacBook Pro, but when I am trying to access it from a PC (both Windows XP and Windows 7) the PC can "see" my MacBook Air on the network, but cannot connect to it - the PC connect window continues to ask for the password, even I am sure I am writing the correct password

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
