Networking issue with new Macbook - cannot get IP address from DHCP router

Hello all, I've seen this problem posted a few times and been having the same problem with my new aluminum MacBook. Here's the story:
When connecting to my network at home, I get the message "Airport has a self-assigned IP and may not be able to connect to the internet." I've been able to connect a few times, but anytime it sleeps or I shut down I have the same problem. When I'm out and about, it has no problem connecting to other networks.
On the network in which I cannot connect, there are 2 other macs and two PCs that do NOT have any problem connecting. Macs are all running 10.5.5.
Router in a 2Wire and uses DHCP. ISP is AT&T.
I've tried rebooting the router, manually assigned an IP address, restarting, updating software. Nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? This is kinda making me crazy.

I've also tried:
1) Creating a new location in network prefs.
2) Zapping PRAM
3) rebooting router many time.
4) putting a $ in front of the hex password
5) deleting all of the plists that I've seen recommended.
6) Starting in safe mode
7) Renewing IP
8) Shutting off firewall

  • Router connected to cable modem by Ethernet port cannot get IP address from DHCP.

I have an ethernet cable on Fa0/0 connecting my 1841 router to my cable modem. The issue is that the router cannot obtain an IP address via DHCP when I have the "ACL-OUTSIDE-IN" ACL applied inbound on the Fa0/0 interface. I tried to allow all BOOTP and BOOTPS traffic in my ACL, but still no luck. I really don't want to run the router without a simple ACL firewall and connect it to the internet. When I take off the ACL off of Fa0/0, the router is able to get an IP address via DHCP.

  • Cannot get an IP from the Router - Limited or No Connection

    Help!
    Hello,
I have a Linksys Wireless G router and 2 XP computers that were
    working fine.
I am using it wired - no wireless being used.
Now one get an error that is there is low network connectivity and
    cannot connect to anything.
The other computer - fine. So X - no connection, Y - connected
I tried swapping cables - same situation (different ends, new cable,
the one from Y) - X no network, Y is fine. Switched router ports -
    same situation X-no, Y - yes
Plugged in modem directly into X - works FINE.
I did check the security center in the control panels - in both cases
the fire wall is on, but the windows firewall is off. I cannot
disable the firewall from X - it must be the router firewall (I tried
removing any filtering from the router - same issue). Again, Y works
    fine.
Only when going through the router does this cause a problem.
    Direct connection is fine.
To top it off, when computer X is booted up in safe mode and going
through the router - it is fine. An IP address is taken. In regular
mode the computer boots up and shows an IP address of 169.254.x.x. I
tried power cycling the mode, router, both, reboots - same issue
169.254.x.x. I tried hard coding the IP address to the one found on
the router and in the range of the router - no dice.
Why can't I get an IP address from DHCP?
Computer X does not Norton Antivirus on it - I disabled it in regular
mode - same problem. I do not want to uninstall it.
I read about a Service Pack 2 problem with XP - but the problem does
not appear in Safe Mode with Networking and I did try the fixes my MS
about it - to no avail. The underlying issue is that computer X
cannot get an IP address from the router.
    Computer X work when:
    - there is a direct connection from the modem (DSL) to the computer
    in regular mode
    - booted up in Safe Mode and attached to the router - can ping it,
    surf the net
Computer Y is fine with the Router.
    Suggestions on how to proceed?
    Help!
    Thanks!
    Tmuld

    Hi,
I tried it - same problem.
Did the netsh command and reboot.
    Did the mtu change.
    Same problem.
Reset the router and tried all over - same situation.
The DHCP client list shows 2 ip addresses - one for the computer that does not work and one for the one that does not.
    Same IP addrsses as before.
192.168.1.100 - does not work - but the MAC address hows, and so does the computer name.
    192.168.1.101 - does work.
Again, the computer works in safe mode (and connected to the router) and with a direct connection. The issue has to be with the router.
Is there any way I can for the computers to swap router IPs?
    Thanks,
    Tmuld

  • Unable to get IP address from DHCP

    hi all,
I have a AP1131 which cannot get IP from DHCP server. I have tried to configure static IP address and controller IP by lwapp command and the AP can successfully joined the controller. However, after I changed it to DHCP in WLC, it cannot get IP address and all lwapp config is gone. It cannot join the controller anymore only after I reset it and configure a static IP for it. The following error message appears after I changed it to DHCP in the WLC:

Any expert has some idea on it?
    Thanks.

Is that AP on the same subnet as the other AP's? The thing is, when you configure the AP with static information, you say the AP is able to join the WLC. This means that there is no issue with the AP. Now when you set the AP to use DHCP and not static, the AP does not obtain a DHCP address? Is that correct? If you have more than one AP on the same switch and on the same vlan, and only one has an issue, then maybe reset that AP to default and see if that fixes it. I'm also assuming that the vlan is being forwarded and you have enough dhcp address in the scope.

  • Question on how networking works with new Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I have a question about how networking works with my new Macbook Pro. This is my first laptop so am new to mobile computing. I am about to configure it to replace my desktop which uses a wired DSL connection. Once I have my Macbook Pro configured to run off the DSL modem, what happens when I take this computer to a location that has ethernet? Will just plugging in the ethernet cable be enough to get on line? Or is there further configuration work that needs to be done?
I used a Windows laptop from work and all I had to do was plug it in to a hotel ethernet cable to get on line. However, this laptop was never configured to run on my DSL network so I am not certain if that makes things more complicated.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi
Your MacBook Pro should just work when plugged into an ethernet connection.
Just check something, Open Network Preferences, you can select it from the Airport icon in the menu bar.
In the left-hand pane click on Ethernet and just check that it is set to configure using DHCP in the right-hand pane, that's it.
So when you plug in the ethernet cable it will ask the router for an IP address and off you go.
I assume that any system you plug into will use DHCP rather than static IP addresses. If it is a static IP address, you will need to manually configure the ethernet settings by inputting the IP address and subnet mask info plus DNS servers.
Usually it is done with DHCP and you don't have to do a thing and likewise your home DSL is DHCP?
If not then you will have to change your settings, make a 'Hotel' setting which you can use when in hotels and keep your 'Home' set-up for when you are at home. In the pull down menu select Edit Locations to add new ones.

  • Serious Issues with New MacBook

I just recently got a new Macbook 1.83 GHz, and everything seemed to work fine for the first couple of days. No whining or mooing; heat was low overall; no dead pixels; quick performance. Then, everything went to hell.
First, I noticed that the built-in iSight would give me the "green screen of death" every so often, requiring me to reboot to fix it. Then, entire batches of photos starting disapearing from Photo Booth (as if one were to click the "Delete all pictures" button, which wasn't the case). Finally, and the most dreadful, upon starting my MacBook up this morning, I found half the machine reverted to factory defaults (system preferences, pictures, documents, widgets, etc - all erased) while the other half still had some stuff left over (my music was still there....until I started up iTunes, which deleted them all). Each time I login, it seems like more information is lost. What could be the cause of this tragedy, and more importantly: what can I do to fix it?
It's a shame, because I really love my MacBook, and I plan on taking it to Florida with me in a few weeks. So, I would hate to have to return it because of this issue. If there is any do-it-yourself solution to this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

First off, you should always...ALWAYS be backing up your important stuff...whether that be music, photos, files...what have you. You would not have such an issue if you would do that. Once you have backups for your important stuff, when you suffer a problem, you can always do several utility stuff.
Disk verify, Disk repair, repair permissions...etc. These procedures can sometimes clear out errant glitches in your system that kind of start a snowball effect to files.
If those don't take care of things, then I would first try to reinstall the OS, and do a restore of your backed up data and files.
Then you can try calling AppleCare and see if they can help you. In fact, I called Applecare today and they are sending me the shipping box and instructions to return my MB for its problems.
These boards, of late, have been a haven for those who just want to complain without attempting to do anything to solve the problem themselves, so I think some folks that help others around here more than I do are getting to feel unappreciated for their efforts.
So in the future you might want to just state with "just the facts" what has happened, what you have tried to remedy the problem, what tests you may have run...and then I think your message board responses might be a little more productive.
Hope you manage to get a handle on your issues and I hope I get my MB back in a timely manner so I can get back to work.

  • USB-C  Hub/Dongle issues with new MacBook early 2015

With the new MacBook that has the single USB-C port I find these results and would appreciate any comments:
I purchased an Apple dongle that has 3 ports:  USB-3, HTMI and USB-C.  I also got a new Belkin 'USB-# / USB-C" 32 gb Flash Drive.
With this dongle (hub?) I can utilize a USB flash drive or USB 500 gb HD via the USB port while charging the MB
I can use the new Belkin USB-C/USB-3 flash drive in the USB port while charging, too
BUT if I remove the charger and just plug-in the Belkin Flash Drive on the USB-C side to the USB-C port on the Apple Hub -- NOTHING  NOTE:  The Belkin 2-size Flash drive works fine in USB-C mode if DIRECTLY connected to the MB
I also purchased a Belkin USB-3  3-port hub with 1 more port - an Ethernet port.  (Note:  This is an UNpowered hub - no transformer, power comes from the Mac)
This works great if all 1, 2 or 3 USB ports are being used with Flash drives of 500 mb to 64 gb in size.
But if I plug-in a SLIM 500 gb USB-3 HD (not an SSD) - then if there are any flash drives in the other ports, they immediately lose power and are "ejected" - and I get a warning message.  So it seems to use a true HD with a USB Hub it will have to be a powered hub.  (I returned the other for full credit and have not yet purchased a powered hub because frankly, I want something portable - so don't plan to do that experiment myself)
So would this hub have worked with a MacBook Pro or iMac?  Is it just that the new MB-2015 model doesn't supply enough power?  (Maybe, I think - but not so sure).
Same result with a 4-port Targus USB-2 hub I use on my MBP-2010.  I'll test that on the MBP with the 500 gb HD tonight.
OK so just wondering if there is anyone out there with similar experience(s) using either the new MBP or in general with HD's and Flash Drives utilizing powered and unpowered USB Hubs.  And the first question about why the Belkin Flash works from the USB-3 side but not the USB-C WHEN UTILIZING THE APPLE HUB/Dongle.  (The Belkin 2-size Flash drive works fine in USB-C mode if DIRECTLY connected to the MB).
    Thanks very much.
    Best regards,

To add. The following note appears on the Apple store site pertaining to T-tech's mobile USB Disk: "Note: The G-Tech G-DRIVE mobile USB 3.0 Hard Drive is not compatible with the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter or USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter."

  • Any known ID CS5.5 issues with new MacBook Pro (mid 2012)?

    ID CS 5.5 Version 7.5.3
    Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
MacBook Pro 13 in (mid 2012)
    ID crashes while deleting pages.
No such issues with my previous MacBook Pro (mid 2009) or a 27 in IMAC (mid 2010). Same software versions. Any ideas?

Yeah, I was kinda worried since it is new. I thought maybe I could somehow adjust the brightness on the screen to make the bottom and corners brighter. And perhaps it was a software issue that was causing the keyboard to malfunction. And definitely have no clue about the headphone jack noises. And the bent display. Hmmm. I guess I will call AppleCare.

  • ISight issues with new macbook pro Retina ?

Hi all, since I have my new MPB with Retina display I have been having some issues with the isight camera, when it first boots in photobooth of facetime sometimes the screen (from the camera) is all blue or green and with some weird line and then it stabilizes for a while but the image is all grainy and looks cheap. The guy at the apple hotline told me to reset the SMC and it seemed to have improved a bit but it's still not that good !
Any ideas on what could be happening ?
    Thank you all

You're welcome - I Googled "Macintosh webcams" and came up with quite a few different units.
    Good luck,

  • Sync issues with new MacBook Pro

Just got a new MacBook Pro and my Iphone 3gs won't sync, Itunes crashes every time I try to sync. Has anyone had a similar problem or know of a solution? Thanks

    Welcome to the discussions,
did you already reinstall iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Service? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747
Do you have any podcasts or slideshows on your phone? If yes, try to delete them before your sync. Also copy your pictures to your mac and delete them on the phone.

  • Trouble getting IP address from DHCP-enabled router

I've recently set up a LinkSys WRT54G wired/wireless router on a home network that has a wired Windows XP machine and a wireless PowerBook with AirPort.
The WRT54G assigns network addresses using DHCP. The PowerBook is able to find the wireless network established by the WRT54G, but doesn't get an IP address from it.
The router seems to be behaving correctly, so I'm guessing there's a problem in the PowerBook setup somewhere. Any ideas?

    Double-check your AirPort's settings:
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create an AirPort configuration, the AirPort card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
    - Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
    - Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    - By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Proxies tab
    - Configure Proxies: Manually
    - Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    - Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
    - Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
    - Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

  • Unable to get ip address from DHCP server for Aironet 1130AG Access Point

I have a network in which DHCP server is enabled. I have read the installation guide also there it is mentioned that 1130G Access point will not have any staic ip assigned to it.So it will automatically get the ip from the DHCP server from the network. I have connected that from the network but it is unable to get the ip address from the same. The same thing i have configured in the netgear it is coming fine. I have seen the sonic wall and used the IPSU tool also from checking the ip address from Mac Address but i am not able to get the same. Please provide me some tips to check where i am wrong in configuration because the first web page also not coming because of the ip address.

    narendra,
I would suggest that the AP be connected to a laptop or desktop pc that would run a local dhcp server with a small scope setup...plenty of free ones on the web(this pc would obviously not be connected to your currnet network). This way you can watch the dhcp server hand the AP it's address (this can take a few minutes). Once you have the address use it to access the GUI and give the AP a static address (I find it good pratice to give all my autonomous AP's static addresses for ease of troubleshooting)...Hope that helps.

  • Projection Issues with NEW MacBook Pro

My slide programs are 1024x768 jpegs at 72ppi that I run through Adobe Bridge's Slideshow. They look beautiful on all my computer screens and look good projected using my older Mac Book laptop using the DVI/VGA cable. The projector I am using is a Hitachi CPX5. Now ... I have a new Mac Book Pro laptop that utilizes the different newer type cable (mini display port/VGA) and the projected jpeg slides just don't look as good as they do with my older laptop. This is very frustrating because one reason I bought the new laptop was for presentations. I tried all the different resolution settings including 'best for projector'. The images look more pixelated or contrasty (like a low res image has been over-sharpened) with the new laptop. Any ideas why it looks better with my old (slow) laptop?
    I noticed there are only 3 resolutions in addition to 'best for projector' ; 1680 x 1050, 1280 x 800, 1152 x 720. There is no 1024 x 768. The Hitachi's native resolution is 1024 x 768 and so are my slides.
The graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

Hi paulshamoon, welcome to Apple Discussions!
i know that apple wont exchange it for me with only one dead pixel
That's usually correct but you will never know unless you try. Were I you I would ask anyway, not knowing the outcome certainly. You can't really lose anything.
half an hour into using it and setting everything up it just reboots out of no where, very bothersome
Has this problem recurred since the original issue?
battery life is HORRIBLE. It barely lasts over an hour on a full charge
If you are using the machine under normal usage conditions then this is not normal behavior. However, if you're running the machine at full brightness with the CPU pegged doing video encoding or something similar, then it could be very normal. Under what operating conditions did you get about one hour of battery life?
Will i be able to exchange it for a new one?
Possibly. The battery issue alone could get you a replacement, but I am not sure of Apple's official policy with regards to these new batteries. In the past they would have just given you a new battery, but since the batteries are no longer user-replaceable I am not sure if they would replace the battery themselves or just give you a new machine.
I know apple is really strict
I wouldn't describe them as strict at all. They have always been very understanding when I've had to deal with them. I would give them a chance to make it right. You have the best chance with the battery issue unless your restarting problem recurs often.
    Best of luck!

  • Officejet 6500A E710n scanner issue with new MacBook Pro

I've had the all in one about a year and recently bought the Mac book pro running on latest OSX-10.9  Mavericks.
i installed the relevant printer drivers and it is printing (wirelessly) but does not recognise scanner anywhere. i looked for a separate scanner driver but found none. is it possible to scan from my Mac using this scanner and how do I set it up?

    Hi AnastasiaK,
I understand that you cannot scan with the Officejet 6500A and the Mavericks operating system. I will try my best to help you resolve this issue.
Here is a link for How to Scan: OS X v10.9.
You may rather scan with Apples Print and Scan Window, follow the steps below.
Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences
    Click Print & Scan .
Click your printer in the left pane.
Click Scan , and then click Open Scanner .
Click Show Details . The details of the scan display, including options to change scan settings.
Figure 1: Example of the Show Details scanning screen
Change any scan settings as necessary, and then click Scan .
    OR
Use the following steps to scan from Apple Image Capture.
Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
In the Applications folder or from the Dock, click Image Capture .
Select your printer from the list. If your printer connects to a network, select it from the Shared list. The details of the scan display.
If a ' Software for this device is not installed ' message displays after you select your printer, click Install , and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
Click Show Details to view scan settings and options
You may want to use the Airprint driver rather then the HP driver.
    I hope this helped.
    Let me know,
I worked on behalf of HP.
