Networking Linksys, iMac, Macbook and Belkin

I live in an old stone house and have two routers: one for each side of the house so I can move around with my laptop since the walls are too thick. The Linksys (WRT300N) is in the basement where the DSL comes in and connects directly to it. The macbook is connected via ethernet to the Linksys (and goes to wireless w/n problem). The Belkin (Wireless G /F5D7230-4) is on the other side of the house connected to the Linksys via ethernet. The imac is connected via ethernet to the Belkin and also has no problem w/ wireless. The setup works fine except there is a printer connected to the imac that that doesn't appear in my network. I was told one of the routers has to go into bridge mode. I'm a newbie and could really use a walk thru. TIA
PS: This is for my iMac and Macbook, not the G5.

So you are not actually using wireless on anything, is that correct? Everything is connected by ethernet?
Explain please how you have configured the LANs that the two router provide, The Belkin router, which is connected to the Linksys router, needs to be configured with a different subnet than that of the Linksys router.
See my post here for the idea;
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12251834#12251834
In this example, your Linksys would be the Office router and the Belkin would be the Home router.

I have iCloud on my iMac, macbook and iPhone.  However, when I update my contacts on one, it does not update on any of the other devices.  The calendar seems to be working.  Any suggestions?

On the iMac and MacBook open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Contacts, then reselect it then restart the Macs.
On the iPhone tap Settings > iCloud
Switch Contacts off then back on then restart the iPhone.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

  • I repeatedly get "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshow" message.  This process is the same on my iMac, MacBook and another iMac.  I have been burning dvd's int he same way for the past 12 months using the exact same steps successfully.

I keep getting "error during rendering/encoding of menus/slideshows" message.  I have been burning DVD's in exactly the same way for the past 12 months and mostly on my MacBook which is 3 years old.  Obviously I'm using iDVD.  I purchased an iMac about a year ago and moved to use this for dvd burning without problem.  A few months ago (approximately) I started to experience problems with burning with the error message above.  I tried everything including starting the whole process from scratch right down to capturing the movie clips from my video recorder into iMovie, then using them in iDVD.  Still the same message came up.  I lost count of how many times I repeated the process with different clips and variations and the same thing happened.  This was also the case with my MacBook and my husband's iMac.
After taking both of mymac's tothe service centre, having new optical thingys put it and even a new hard drive on my iMac along with a new DVD burner the same thing happened.  They told me it must be the process that I am using that is incorrect!
I took my 27" iMac to an apple shop and asked them to assist me while I use the same technique as I always had.  The same message came up so they tried using my clips in one of their mac's.  The same message. They tried it with different clips and the same message.  The only way we could get theirs to work was with a magic DVD which did not produce what I needed and was limited with only one page.
I now cannot use any of my Mac's for the intended purpose that I bought them for - to produce good media for my work!  It was suggested that I purchase some non Mac software to burn DVDs which defeats the object of having a mac with iDVD in my opinion.  I have a book on iDVD which is very informative and have followed the process to the letter and checked all the trouble shooting and still no remedy.  It was mentioned that an up-date may have caused the problem on all my macs.
I feel that this issue should be addressed by Apple as a matter of correctness.
I now find that on the net there are many posts in forums and such like with exactly the same (almost word for word) problems.  Please Apple, keep/regain your good name and sort this out.

Thanks Bengt W for your attention to this matter.  So much appreciated.  And thanks for putting me right on the aim of forums (new to this).  Although, you may regret asking for more information.  I've added everything I can below.
The process I used is as follows:
Import recorded clips of between 5 and 15minutes each from my video recorder into i
Edit the clips (remove unwanted start and endng)
Add title to front of clips
‘Share’ them to ‘movie’ (export using QuickTime)folder in .mov format individually
Open iDVD and ‘create new project’
Select ‘favourite’ theme that I have set up forall my work dvd’s (this has been used successfully many times and I’ve triedwithout using the favourite them).
Add 2 submenus for each group of clips
Select submenu  - drag and drop between 3 – 6 clips in each of the twosubmenus
    Change title colours on clips
Dragand drop image into drop zones where required
In‘map’ view I check for any yellow warnings before burning to disc
In an attempt to remedy the problems I’ve tried the following:
    Try new DVD discs
Try different themes (favourites and standardones)
    Change images in drop zones
Start whole process again even from importingfrom camera again
Two other completely different computers (iMacand MacBook) with iDVD
Go to apple shop and use their computers to doin iDVD
Try with one clip and no menu pages added
Use a clip that I already have that did notoriginate from my camera
    Turn computer off and restart
    New hard drive
    New optical lense (thing)
    New DVD burner
Saving to disc image rather than dvd disc
    Other points:
I also have a ‘flip’ and ‘iPhone’ whereI’ve imported footage camera which, although limited, records and makes videoclips and burns them to DVD through iDVD without problem.
For example, I have just gone through steps 5 - 11 using some clips that were already imported from my iphone to iPhoto and dragged across.  I used a theme that I've used before which has failed and added one sub menu page where the clip went.  It burned to disc image successfully.
The startup disc, I believe will have no space issues asit’s a new hard drive with no use apart from this.  That could have been an issue before (I didn’t check it) butnot now.
Other technical stuff that I don't understand but you may:

  • Can I create a wi-fi network on my macbook and still connect to the internet via an actual wifi point?

    Hi,
I got TrakProDJ from the app store and installed it.
It allows me to control a DJing software with my iPad by setting up a network via Wifi Symbol in Toolbar>Create Network...
The problem with this is the network I create isn't based in the internet--it's just a wifi link between my laptop and iPad.
I'm sure I'll get asked to play songs I'll have to look up on youtube, so how is it possible that I can maintain my wifi network connection on my macbook and create an access point for my iPad to use to communicate with my laptop (to control the DJing software)?
I'll really appreciate any help I can get!
    Thank you!

You cannot use both an ad-hoc network and a normal ap based one with any wireless device.  Your only solution is to use a wired Internet connection to do so on the laptop, that way you use that for Internet access and your wifi for the ad-hoc network the app requires.  You might want to contact the developer of that app and find out why they limit the setup to just an ad-hoc wifi setup.  Seems that if all it requires is just a network connection to the laptop, they could simply use any existing network connection as long as both devices can see each other on it.  Either that or also give the user the option to use Bluetooth for it if they have the higher version of hardware to support the necessary data exchange.

  • Direct network connection between MacBook and a PC with a switch

I have a MacBook in my home and a PC. There is a router connected to the internet in a house nearby. A cable comes from there to my house. At my house I have an 8-port 100 Mb switch. The PC is connected to the switch with a cable. There is a DLink 2000AP connected to the switch, so I am connected to the network wirelessly. All the cabling in my house is good, I mean both the PC and the wifi access point have got very good cable connecting to the switch. But the switch is connected to the router in the other house with a very bad cable (I suspect it is just some kind of phone cable). this cable seems o be enough for the internet but not for 100 Mb network.
Now I have a big hard drive connected to the PC, I made it shared, so I can mount it on my MacBook. But the problem is that the speed of transferring data between the Macbook and PC is really low (around 0.5 MB/s). I suspect that it is because when sending data the Mac sends it first to the router which has got such bad cable and then only to the PC. In this way the data comes through the bad cable twice. But if I could set it up in such a way that the data goes only through the switch (without going to the router), then no data would go throught the bad cables to the router and everything will be very fast. so, my humble question would be whether it is possible to say to computers or router that the info should be set via switch and not the router.
Thanks a lot for your help.

You are correct Since you do not have your wireless network set up for a machine-to-machine connection, all data is going to your wireless access point, then up the bad cable to the router, back down the bad cable to your other computer. To quote an old cliche, this chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
You can connect, via ethernet cables, the Mac and the PC directly through a switch or hub. This should by-pass the need of the data to go up through the router. However, my experience is that sometimes the computers can get confused with this type of setup, not knowing what route to take.
Maybe someone else has a better solution, other than replacing the line to the router with a much better cable or a point-to-point wireless solution.

  • Macbook and Belkin Pre-N Router

I need some help. I have been using a Belkin Pre-N router over the last few years, and have ben happy with the product. The other day, I had to reset it, and, I also put the router on channel 11 because of possible router interference with other wireless homes on my street. This was with the help from Belkin support.
The router is running excellent supporting two desktop computers running Vista Business, and XP Pro. There are two laptops running Vista Home Premium, and XP Pro. The wireless response is great. The activity level is minimum, with no more then 2 computer running at one time.
I have a Macbook running Mac OS 10.5.6
    Model Name: MacBook
    Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz

    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz

    SMC Version: 1.17f0

    AirPort Card Information:

    Wireless Card Locale: USA
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.8.0
    Current Wireless Network: TP
    Wireless Channel: 11
My MAC is running slow in a wireless made, it was alway lightning fast, and I don’t know what to do to correct the problem.
Some web site fill in quickly, other are very slow, and many times, I need to do a refresh to get the entire page displayed.
Any thought on what might be the problem? I use Safari - version 3.2.1

Thanks in advance,
    Tom

Pretty sure (not totally) that it may be the 10.5.6 update/safari rather than just the router - but that said, resetting the router might have dropped it to b, g, or or disabled the "n"... I mean, the router isn't operating at it's max speed. My iMac does pretty well on G.
Windows did pretty well on B too, within 20-30 feet... as long as nobody turned on a light or anything harsh....
Like I have a b-g router, so I set it to G manually rather than auto... which would drop it to b for the whole house if I inadvertently used a b setting on an older WAP.
I kinda need to upgrade everything, on a one thing budget.. hmmm...

  • Network an iMac, PC and Laptop

Hi, I just purchased an iMac and want to network the new iMac, an existing Dell PC (w/XP Pro) and an existing Dell Laptop (w/XP Home). Currently I have a Belkin Wireless Pre-N Router that the PC and Laptop are networked on (to a cable modem). I'm wondering if I can use that configuration or should get the AirPort Extreme and go that route. Ultimately I would love to be able to share the printer and the external hardrive among the 3 computers. I don't mind investing in the new technology as long as I know it works and works well. I've done some research and I've officially confused myself. That's why I am here now. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks!

Thanks Matt, I have not tried to set up the iMac as of yet. Mainly because it has ot arrived yet! Hopefully tomorrow. It is the newer iMac with the Intel processor. I'm thinking that I do want both the printer and the external HD shared so I might go with the new AirPort Extreme.
    Hi
Both the Belkin and the Airport Extreme will work
with all your computers, they just have different
configuration methods. The Belkin (I believe) does
not have the capability to share USB printers or hard
drives, so if that's a deal-breaker for you, go with
    the Airport.
Have you tried to set up the iMac on your current
    network yet?
Also, is your iMac one of the old CRT models
(specific to this forum), or a new Intel model (which
    has its own forum here).

  • How do I use Time Machine w/ Imac/MacBook and AirportExtreme w/ Ext.HD?

I have an iMac and a Macbook w a LaCie 1TB HD and Airport Extreme Base Station. I want to use Time Machine to back up both computers. I was told I should connect the HD to each one separately w USB first to speed up the initial copy and then plug it into Airport and it should automatically continue to back up each computer. Is this the best/fastest way to do it? Do I need to install any software for the ext. HD on each computer first?

no, this won't work actually, because directly attached backups are stored differently. you should START the backups when the drive is attached to EABS. once it's started you can interrupt the backup by control-clicking on TM in the dock->stop backup. THEN move the drive to be directly attached and resume the backup. this way it will continue the backup started remotely. once the first backup is finished you can move the drive back to AEBS.
    repeat for the second computer.

no, no extra software is needed. but you do need to make sure that you have installed all the updates for AEBS.

  • Best use for 3 Macs in our home - iMac, MacBook and iPad wiFi 32GB

  • As a new member to the mac world could some please tell how i can get my imac, macbook and iPhone to share the same iPhoto library

How can i share the same iPhoto library so that i dont have to update each computer?

Not easily. iPhoto is designed for a single user. While it is possible to share the Library there are significant limitations.
Some questions: Do you want all three libraries identical? Same photos, same Albums, Same slideshows?
Do you import and arrange photos on one machine or on all of them?
    What networking do you have?

  • HT204406 Cannot sync iTunes match to my iPad, message says "not subscribed to iTunes match" even though I am an using it on my iMac,macbook and iPhone

I have tried everything I can think of, but to no avail, all my devices are set to the same apple ID, but the ipad will not let me use itunes match.
I have it working fine on all my other devices, any suggestions?

    Hi,
You cannot subscribe to match on your ipad!! You can only subscribe to match from the itunes library on your computer.
When you subscribe, itunes match scans your computer to determine what can be Matched, Uploaded and Inelligible. It will also identify your itunes Purchases which don't count towards the 25K limit.
Once itunes completes its scan, you will be told how many tracks are in the cloud. Once this is done you can turn on Match on your Ipad and you will have access to all music that is matched, uploaded or purchased.

  • Creating a local wifi network between macbook and iphone

    Hi there
I'm in a hotel and want to move some files to my iphone, but the computer I have isn't my synching machine. I would like to create a wifi network that the iphone and the macbook can both join. I also have an older airport express on hand, and am using Snow Leopard on a newer macbook pro.
I've tried creating a wifi network on the macbook and joining from the iphone, but the iphone can't see the network even when specified manually.
I've also tried making a network with the airport express, but the same thing happens as with the macbook.
I feel like this should be do-able, but I'm missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I have been trying this for days now without success! I seem to create a computer to computer network ok (although I dont know if I should use dhcp or dhcp with manual or manual ip setting..??), and my iphone recognises the wifi name I give it.... but shows a different ip address!
and when I try the desired app (iosc), it doesnt seem to be transmitting any iosc data to my max/msp patch. Is there a simple test to check if the iphone is actually connecting ? - even though the ip addresses are different (weird!?)..
    any help very much appreciated...

  • What is the best way to sync iCal, AdressBook, etc on several devices? (iMac, MacBook, iPad and iPhone)

I have several Apple devices (iMac, MacBook and iPhone) and I was wondering what is the best way to sync iCal, AdressBook, etc on these devices?
I have an iCloud acount as well, but how to sync without seeing enteries double (iCal)?
    Many thanks!

iCloud should not cause duplicate entries in Calendars unless you are syncing using iTunes as well as Wi-Fi. No need for both.
    iCloud backs up:
Purchased music, TV shows, apps, and books
Photos and video in the Camera Roll
    Device Settings
    App data
    Home screen and app organization
    Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
    Ringtones

  • Forget a Network on iMac

I'm running Lion on my iMac and would like to forget a network (linksys, no security and no internet connection). It's really annoying as the iMac connects to this inoperative router.
I can do this on my iPhone and would like to do the same on the iMac. How can this be done?

open the system preferences and go to network.  select the your airport connection.  theres a "ask to join networks" checkbox, make sure that's checked so it doesnt rejoin that network again without asking you.    click the 'advanced' button.  you'll have a list of preferred networks.  you can select them there and click the minus button to remove old networks from the list.
