Networking Lion Server on Mac Mini with XP

On my XP desktop I can ping to my Mac Mini with Lion Server. I can ping the IP Address of the Mac Mini from the command line. When I try to map a network drive when I enter the ip address\username(on the Mac Mini) another screen appears asking for username and password. I can't get past that screen. When I enter in the username and password of my Admin account on the Mac Mini it wipes out the information and l am left with a blank username and password dialog box.
What can I do so the XP box can see files on the Mac Mini? The Mac Mini does not need to see information on the XP box.
Thank you for looking.

Lion Server Forum might have some answers for you?

Lion server on Mac mini server stop responding to ssh and VNC (other services like mail, ical works well)
    Version is Lion server 10.7.4
When I attach a monitor to it, I saw all the buttons and menus stopped responding too. I can only push and hold the power button on the box to shutdown.
    It only started happening recently.
    Anyone has any clue?
Thanks for the help in advance!!!

Found that the second hard drive is broken. I have to go to the apple store to have it replaced.
I had to press the power button to turn the server off for several times, then the broken hard drive went disappeared. After that, I had to disable the Spotlight. Then the server went back to work normally.
Now I made a CCC copy of the primary hard drive, and would like to have the server run on the external raid disk (connected through thunderbolt). Does anyone have previous experience with it? Any expectable drawback or issue with this setup?

  • A lot of problems with Lion Server in Mac Mini Server

I have a new Mac Mini Server and I have a lot of problems.
The  server application works well for a day, then start to have problem, for example: I can not change the configuration of the share folder, I add a new user but he can not see some folders.
Then if I login the Mac Mini with another user, he can not see the starting folder and if you open a new folder you see a lot of strange documents.
Later, with administrator user, I can not login the server application, I put the user name and password but it refuses it (user name and passowrd are correct)
In the end I also can not login the computer.
I reinstalled the Lion Server 2 times but nothing change, after 2 days it doesn't work like before.
I'm very upset, this is the first time in more then 20 year I have a problem with an Apple computer.
    What can I do?

  • OSX LION SERVER on Mac Mini for a home media server?

Would a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Lion Server be a good alternative for a home multi media movie server?
    Has anyone done this?
If so please give advice or success stories vs. HP Home Media Smart Server (i added a link to the HP server)
    http://www.hp.com/canada/products/landing/mediasmart/ex.html
I would really rather use a Mac product but not sure what Apple offers and  if it will do the same or better than the HP Media Smart Server.
Again, any advice would be great.
    Cheers,

It would make a great server. Bonus over Apple TV for example is that you have access via both wired ethernet and wireless. Plus if you load tools from XBMC, Firecore and others you have a significant media server. Cost is right too.
Many people are doing this - google mac mini media server or other for more info.
Total downside to any windows based system - dealing with constant anti-virus, major security hassels, lack of true media integration and PITA to update, etc.
You should be aware that Lion Server is not ready for prime time - it stil has significant issues if you are migrating from SNL 10.6.8. If you buy an apple fresh Lion Server mac mini you should have no problems.
    You'll probably be pleased.

  • Help! Can't reinstall Lion Server on Mac Mini Server

To me, the perfect computer is a Mac Mini server (the current model) with one of the HDDs replaced with an SSD. I did this with two Mac Minis three months ago and it went perfectly.
Well. I bought a third Mac Mini and have attempted to do the following:
Carefully opened the case, removed the top parts and memory.
Removed the top 500 GB HDD
Replaced it with a OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III 2.5" SSD
Booted from a SD Card with the recovery system on it
Formatted both SSD and the other HDD, ensured they have the GUID boot block needed for Apple booting
What happened was...a total let down. It would start to download Mac OS Lion Server then tell me, "Could not find instalation information for this machine. Contact Applecare." If I went and re-formatted the SSD and tried it again, often it would go past this section, actually starting the download, but then I'd get "Can't download the additional components needed to install OS X."
I verified all connections were solid. Putting the original HDD back caused the machine to boot fine and let me set up Lion Server for use (oddly, even though I'd formatted one of the two RAID drives, but whatever). I am doing the exact same thing I did before successfully, only with an OCZ drive this time instead of Other World Computing. Either Mac Minis hate working with OCZ SSDs, or I made some mistake somehow (I'm pretty sure I didn't), or else Apple has flipped a switch forbidding software restoring of Mac Minis that have been "altered" from factory state. If so this will be a huge problem for Apple. I will make sure the major Apple blogs hear of this, if this is the case.
Can anyone suggest what else I can try to get this to install? If I can get a spare OCZ SSD so it's exactly the same as my previous successes. Otherwise I don't know what else to try.
(I guess cloning the system from one of the Mac Minis that works would be a possibility, though I want to solve this.)

  • Lion Server on Mac Mini

I have a Mac Mini in the office that I want to set up with Lion Server. But it needs to continue to be used as the desktop machine for my office administrator. Is there any problem with that set up?

How hard are you going to use the server side of things? If this is going to be a major server running a sophisticated popular web site, or be doing heavy duty on any server stuff, it may not be a good idea to have it also be someone's desktop machine.
If all your server is for is a little light file service I would not expect it to be a problem.
    Best of luck.

  • Removing OSX Lion Server from Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011)

    Hello, fellow apple fanboys!
I was wondering if anybody knew the sollution to my problem. I have recently purchased the Mac Mini Server, the mid 2011 model, and I wanted to replace the server edition of Lion with the standard one. However, when I plug in my lion installation thumbdrive the system just displays a stop sign, meaning that I cannot boot from it. I was wondering if I could just wipe the Server HD and reinstall standard Lion OS on it.

I have the 2011 Mini Server and all I did was just not enable
any server functions.  It works just fine.  Unlike previous
versions of OSX, the server is an add on to the OS and
not intertwined with the OS.  So, my suggestion is don't
bother.  Just isn't worth the time.
As to why the thumbdrive doesn't work, it is probably a version
that is older than what the Mini was shipped with.  This is not
anything new as this is the way OSX has always been.

  • Can't reach network video server on Mac Mini's USB Ethernet Adapter.

I am trying to connect an IP video server to my Mac Mini's USB>Ethernet adapter. The server works fine on the built in Ethernet "en(0)", but is unreachable on the USB>Ethernet adapter network"en(3)".
Is this a subnet issue? I don't know much about networking obviously, but I think I just need to find a way to designate the proper port to look on, because the Mac is looking on the built in Ethernet only when I specify http://192.168.0.90:80/
The en(3) is configured for DCHP.
I could just hook the server up to the built in Ethernet, but then I'll have to run new and very long cat 5 cable.
I'd love to hear any ideas on how to get this working.

The Network Settings for the USB>Ethernet port are:
    IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Address 169.254.33.152
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    Router: (none)
    DNS Server: (none)
    Search Domains: (none)

  • Why can't I install MacOSX Lion on a Mac Mini with 10.6.8, 2GB RAM, and CPU upgraded to Core2 Duo?

I have an older Intel Mac Mini running fully updated Snow Leopard with an upgraded CPU (Core2 Duo), RAM (2GB), and hard drive.
Supposedly, this should be compatible with Lion, but the App Store refuses to download it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

It's not the graphics card it is the fact that it is an "upgraded"
system.  Lion, as with any OSX install, is based on the
original computer ID.  If the ID indicated that it was not
a model that was shipped with a CPU that meets the minimum
    requirements it will not install.
The reason I say it is not the graphics card, is that my
Macbook has that card and Lion installed without issue.  It
was, however, equipped with a Core2Duo processor.

  • What is the migration path to Lion Server from Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server

I've currently got a mac mini server happily serving wikis/blogs... what is the update path to Lion Server?

    excellent resource! thanks!

  • Can Lion run on Mac Mini with 1.83 GHz and 2GB RAM?

    Hey guys!
at first, sorry for my may bad english.
After years of windows strangulation i want to upgrade to a mac. but, there is a tiny problem: i dont have enough money for a new mac mini cause i'm a student und things like that.
But i have enough money to buy me a mac on eBay . Maybe a "old" mac mini, but its a mac. On eBay germany (my homeland) i found a few mac mini's there in my budget. There's the Mac mini 2.1 with 1,83GHz and 1 GB RAM. So, i read that that dont work anyway because the RAM is to low.
Now my question: when i buy such a machine and upgrade the RAM to 2GB, would Lion run on it?
    Sincere regards, Manuel from germany.
Oh and Steve, if you read that, that's fine by me if you want to donate me a old mac from you.

You are in luck.  The Mac Mini 2,1 is the oldest Mac Mini that with an upgrade to 2GB or 3GB will run Lion. That said. you'll want to purchase Snow Leopard while it is still available, if the machine hasn't yet been upgraded to Snow Leopard, as that is your key to get Lion installed after the RAM is upgraded.  This is a user to user forum, so it is unlikely "Steve" will be viewing your post.

  • How do I set up my Time Machine and Mac Mini with Lion Server so i have one wifi loop in the house?

    HELP!
So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.
    Thanks!
    John

You often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it.

  • Will Mac Mini with OSX Server 10.6 Snow Leopard be able to fit my needs?

    Hello,
The office i work in is a Mac environment.
Is this unit powerful enough to support 20 people? This is the setup i was thinking:
Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server - 2.66GHz : Dual 500GB:
1st Internal drive - OS only
2nd Internal drive - OS backup via CarbonCopyCloner
Ministack USB drive - Data backup via Time Machine (file shares etc on server from services)
Firewire DroboPro 16TB - Client Time Machine Backups via the Network.
Would the Mac Mini be powerfull enough to support normal OS X Server services, and at the same time act as a client Time-Machine backup via the network?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

The answer to your question depends on how many of the services you intend to offer.
If you are just going to use the Mini as a File, Print, and directory server, then it will work fine.
If you intend it to run as your web, email, database, and iChat server, you might be pushing things a bit much.
Your drive layout looks appropriate for a simple file server, so I would tentatively say yes, it looks like it would do what you currently require.

  • Mac Mini with OSX server still OK?

    HI All,
I was going to purchase the mac mini that was geared up to work best with OSX server however that option is now no longer available and the mac mini's have downgraded slightly in terms of quadcore processors and 2tb harddrives.
We run a small design studio, file sharing is becoming a large hinderance on workflow and I thought OSX server sounded like a good solution for someone with little knowledge of the area. We have four imacs, and three macbooks. Our team is growing fairly quick and that number should double next year.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

Just get the latest mac mini, add some external storage with a Thunderbolt 2 connection and that setup will work great for filesharing.
You will get gigabit network speeds and since it's Thunderbolt 2 the mac mini will have no problem to serve those files across the network.
Make sure you get external storage with a decent RAID setup like a Promise Pegasus for instance, and invest in a good back-up solution.
Then clone your mac mini OSX Server setup daily towards the RAID and you're good to go!
Get a Mac Mini with an SSD or Fusion Drive and 16GB of RAM. That'll keep you going for the next couple of years easy!
    Goodluck!

  • Is there a way to run Internet Explorer on a Mac mini with mountain lion?

I need to access a professional website that only works with IE (don't get me started on THAT) I need to do billing using this site so need to have full functionality.  Is there a way to run IE on my mac mini with mountain lion?

The key takeaway here is that yes, you can access Windows 7 (and IE 9) from OS X Mountain Lion.
The crucial question is about your workflow. If you need concurrent access to both Windows 7 and Mountain Lion, then the Bootcamp solution included with Mountain Lion would not be the right choice. You would need one of the virtualization solutions.
If you need helpdesk support from a paid product, rather than entirely from a community forum, then the latest Parallel's Desktop or VMware would be a matter of choice, with Parallel's the better decision at this point. Either of these products are under $100, in addition to the cost of a Windows 7 license. You may need the Windows 7 installation media as an .ISO file, rather than on DVD. Check requirements.
By example, I use Oracle's VirtualBox (free) on Mountain Lion, with a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit guest. The interactive and network performance of this Windows guest are more than adequate on my 2011 mini. I assigned 3 GB memory and 2 of 4 processor threads to the Windows 7 guest. I also restricted guest CPU use to 80%. VirtualBox is installed on my SSD, but the Windows guest is on an external HDD. That is not a default configuration. There are multiple choices for display; from full-screen 1920x1200 (mine) to an isolated resizeable window, to seamless integration with OS X. The Apple keyboard, bluetooth devices (trackpad/mouse), and printer all are recognized. I also have a shared OS X folder with VirtualBox, and copy/paste integration.
I use VirtualBox as it meets my support (forum) and functional requirements.
    Best wishes,
