Ok well at the moment I have an pc running on windows(with a dialup net connection) and im looking at buying a macbook and i was wondering if i buy a wireless PCI (desktop) adaptor here: http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4471682d096f293a2740c0a87f9c06e6/Pr oduct/View/XH6312
and put that into my current PC and create a network and then with my new macbook use airport to detect the network.
Would that allow me to connect to the internet through my macbook when im at home?

You cannot extend wifi from a different brand router..
Only apple to apple.
But the apple router does not have to be the main router.. it can be in bridge.. as long as it is creating a wireless network it will work fine.

So I recently set up my Apple Airport Extreme Router in my dorm and have a BIG problem. It works and lets me do most things on my own network, but when I try doing things on my external devices connected to the network (Apple TV and Sonos Hi-Fi Sound system) the connection just doesn't go through. I'll give two examples.
After setting up my Sonos system successfully, I was prompted to update the software so I can use options that need internet access such as pandora and soundcloud. It just didn't work at all. It gave me an error that had to do with internet connection. I tried numerous times.
On Apple TV, I used AirPlay on my phone to mirror what I was seeing on my phone and then tried to play youtube, soundcloud, and other music apps and none of them worked.
My guess is that it has something to do with my school's restrictions on streaming or downloading. But none of this stuff is actually restricted so I know it must be due to the transfer of information between my network (which is connected to the school's network I am assuming, since my ethernet port is in my dorm wall) and my external devices.
Honestly I'll probably get the "Your school has these restrictions answer", but I know there is a way to fix this and I really want the answer!!

You don't need the AirPort Express to do this.
You can set your Mac to share it's wired connection over the wireless port and the iTouch can connect directly to the Mac.
You could also do it with the AirPort Express, but you don't need to - it's overkill for what you've described.

Printer Problems "Network host is busy" when using Airport Extreme

I have an Airport Extreme wireless network. It is connected to a brand new HP Laserjet and my network consists of 1 MacBook Pro also running Parallels and Windows XP as a virtual machine, 3 PC Laptops (running XP) and a PC desktop (running XP).
The printer is an HP Laserjet 2727. I just installed it last week with new drivers. I ran test pages from all the pcs and the mac and everything seemed to work fine until I get up the next morning.
Everyday when I go to use the printer, there's something wrong with it and I have power it and the wireless down and back up again.
One error I keep getting is "Network host is busy, will retry in x seconds". Other times I get nothing, it just sits there doing nothing. Again I have to power everything back down and up again and then go recheck each computer and run tests from each.
I work from home, I can't keep doing this every couple of hours. HELP!

Connection to internet via ADSL with password login - using airport extreme

my connection to internet is via ADSL with account name and password login. i was able to set up the PPPoE settings of my new macbook properly to connect to the internet via an Ethernet cable. however, when i was trying to set up the airport extreme base station, the amber light was on all the time and has been giving me the error message "no connection to internet" - can someone pls help?

btam, Welcome to the discussion area!
The first thing to do is DISABLE PPPoE on your Mac. Since your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) will be handling PPPoE, your Mac doesn't need to do it.
Next configure the AEBS to connect to your ISP using PPPoE. You can see where to enter the PPPoE information by looking at Page 33 in the "Designing AirPort Networks" (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPortNetworks.pdf).

Networking MacBook with iMac

Apologies if this is the wrong area of the forums....
I have a lovely MacBook, and I have a fabulous iMac (24" running Leopard). They both currently live in the same room, but the iMac has some external harddrives connected that host my house music collection.
I'm sure that there's a simple way of doing this but I've not worked it out yet, but is there a way of getting the two of them talking wirelessly so that I can access the files on the external drives with my MacBook?

On your iMac (or both computers if you want to share both ways) go to system preferences>sharing and check all the items you wish to share with the other computers on your network. Also make sure there is a name for the computer. The one item in particular that you're needing to check, specific to your post, is 'File Sharing'. Now depending on how many accounts and their account types, you may have to determine the access allowed. You can change users and their access in the right side of the window. Find this information in the window, "Other users can connect......", you need to note the afp://numbers.
Now to access the computer from another computer, if you have Leopard when you open a Finder window the computer will probably show under 'Shared'. Just select it and then 'Connect As'. If you're using Tiger, open Finder and go to Go Menu>Connect To Server. In the field Server Address you need to enter in the information you got previously (afp://numbers). Then it will ask for User Name and Password and then what disk to mount (could be external drive, internal drive, home folder, etc).

Apple Remote Desktop when using AirPort inside a FiOS Router

I have a verison FiOS Router that is no longer hosting my wireless. That is now configured through my AirPort TimeCapsule. How do I set up my system to use Apple Remote Desktop for access over the Internet. It worked before when I set up Port Forwarding in my FiOS Router. How do I do in this new configuration? Thanks

You disabled the wireless radio in your FiOS router, but did you reconfigure it as a bridge? That is, did you also disable the router's NAT & DHCP services? If not, then the FiOS router is still the device that you would configure port mapping/forwarding on. Also, with NAT & DHCP enabled on the FiOS router, the Time Capsule should be in bridge mode.

Networking macbook with windows server 2003 LAN

Can anyone refer me to a good, very basic source for how-to set up a macbook on a windows network server running Windows Server 2003? I would be running a lot of apps in Windows environment using Parallels.

Internet Security when trading with online broker using airport

I like to day trade in my free time. I also travel a lot since I am active duty US military. Sometimes I'll be sitting in a hotel or a wi-fi spot trading using safari or a platform(app) and I have growing concerns for safety and security.
I am using a Macbook Pro I purchased in 2009, I always keep it updated. Is there anything else I should/could do to ensure the security and privacy of my accounts while using public wi-fi such as hotels and libraries. Even if I am trading from home!
Is the manufacturer firewall sufficient to prevent hacking?
I understand there's only so much I can do, but I would like to do as much as possible to ensure the security of my information such as passwords and account information.

As long as your trading sessions are encrypted (verified by the https in the URL and the lock icon at the top right of the Safari window or tab you're in), you're safe. But that doesn't mean the Wi-Fi session is secure. Even so, unless somebody has the means to decrypt your transaction, they can't get any information during your session.

Problems with adjusting volume using Airport Express - please help!

I have set up Airport Express and I can now wirelessly play ITunes through my stereo. However, adjusting the volume is a nightmare. Using the ITunes volume control it gets so loud that the speakers almost blow despite it being on the lowest volume on the volume bar. Making it quieter (by sliding the control minutely to the left) turns the volume to so quiet I cannot hear it! How can I have a normal control of the volume. The volume control on the amplifier does not alter the volume if played via ITunes wirelessly. I have searched for volume preferences but nothing works. Any advice before my neighbours kill me?

I have mine plugged in to Tape In on a Bose Lifestyle console. The volume via the Bose remote works fine as does the iTunes slider, although it has to be said it is a little tricky to fine tune the iTunes volume level from the slider.
If your inputs are correct you should be able to use the volume control on the amp.

Network with some comps using ethernet, some airport

I intend to create a wireless network, possibly with Airport Extreme, in my apartment, for use with my MacBook and MacBook Pro. However I have two desktop comps as well, a PC and a PM G5 without wireless cards. I do not want to buy cards for the desktops because of lack of money and also because the PM G5 is in the basement where the Airport signal would not reach. So, is it in any way possible to have ethernet and airport at my apartment at the same time? Does Airport support that?
Here is the current (simple) internet setup:
Internet > DSL Modem > ethernet rooter/hub > ethernet cables > computers
And also it would be pretty much crucial to share files between the "wirelessed" laptops and the "cabeled" desktops back and forth.

Yes and yes. That is why the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) has LAN Ethernet port (or ports).
Internet > DSL Modem > ethernet rooter/hub > ethernet cables > computers
Just replace your "ethernet rooter/hub" with the AEBS.

Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet. The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing. With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

Can I use apple TV on home network with time capsule or Airport Xtreme without being connected to the internet?

I'm wondering if I can use Apple TV to play movies and slide shows on my TV, play music over my sound system and print from my devices (Iphone 4S, iPad and MacBook pro 2011) by using an Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule (to back up the devices) if those devices are not connected to the internet. Can anyone advise pls? Reason for this is that I work on a moving ship and don't have an internet connection to speak of for much of the time (and if I do it's a wireless system that I need to pay by the minute and that is too slow to support the Apple TV), but would all the same like to create a wireless environment where my devices can interact with each other. I seem to get conficting info and a rep at the apple store in Honolulu told me that you cannot use Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule without an internet connection (it was busy, he may have misunderstood my question).

Don't try to home share it.. as that is dependent on using Apple ID.
Just airplay to the ATV.. iTunes: Using AirPlay
The movie should play exactly as your doing music.. but get rid of the whole home share if that is causing issues.. there is no mention of needing home share in the above..
If you still have issues you might need to do it other ways.. like export the movie from itunes.. and play it using vlc which should allow you to stream it to the apple TV using airplay.
That is a bit tricky and I have not used that setup but it should work.

If you have a hunt around you should find it fairly easy to do.. but straight airplay should work.. there is a very recent update to ATV which might help it with airplay.
