Networking my MacBook with iMac

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but i couldn't find a thread, and despite the cost of apple support - they are only open BH...which seems ridiculous.
Anyway...I have a G5 iMac which i have just installed an Airport Extreme Card in.
I am waiting on my Airport Express device, however the Apple Support people told me i could still network my iMac and new MacBook in the meantime, meaning that i could share files from the iMac and use the iMac's ADSL interent network (although both couldn't be connected at same time).
I assume i have to go into the network settings and put in an IP address or something, but can't quite work it out...any suggestions?
Thanks in advance (because I am not too good at all this stuff!!)
Shari

Have you tried this. http://www.mac.com/1/learningcenter/Modules/LHTNet_t2.html

  • Networking my MacBook with my Mac Pro - Firewire

    Does anyone know of the correct settings to network your macbook pro with your mac pro for file sharring over firewire?

    This is not very hard.
    Make sure both machines have firewire networking turned on - make sure that they both get IP addresses assigned by DHCP.
    1) Go to System Preferences - Networking and select the Nework Status pulldown.
    2) If Firewire is not on the list, press configure select the network port config on the pulldown and tick Firewire.
    Both machines are now set up to use the Firewire port as a network connection.
    On one machine (the Mac Pro) - go to the sharing tab and share your internet connection (Ethernet or Airport) with computers connecting via Firewire.
    That's it. You are good to go.
    When you plug in the MBP the Mac Pro will act as a DHCP server and assign an IP address to the MBP.

  • Networking MacBook with iMac

    Apologies if this is the wrong area of the forums....
    I have a lovely MacBook, and I have a fabulous iMac (24" running Leopard). They both currently live in the same room, but the iMac has some external harddrives connected that host my house music collection.
    I'm sure that there's a simple way of doing this but I've not worked it out yet, but is there a way of getting the two of them talking wirelessly so that I can access the files on the external drives with my MacBook?
    Thanks for reading and hopefully helping!

    On your iMac (or both computers if you want to share both ways) go to system preferences>sharing and check all the items you wish to share with the other computers on your network. Also make sure there is a name for the computer. The one item in particular that you're needing to check, specific to your post, is 'File Sharing'. Now depending on how many accounts and their account types, you may have to determine the access allowed. You can change users and their access in the right side of the window. Find this information in the window, "Other users can connect......", you need to note the afp://numbers.
    Now to access the computer from another computer, if you have Leopard when you open a Finder window the computer will probably show under 'Shared'. Just select it and then 'Connect As'. If you're using Tiger, open Finder and go to Go Menu>Connect To Server. In the field Server Address you need to enter in the information you got previously (afp://numbers). Then it will ask for User Name and Password and then what disk to mount (could be external drive, internal drive, home folder, etc).

  • Sync macbook with iMac?

    Hello,
    I use a Macbook and now consider buying a new iMac for my home. However, I do not want to always copy files manually between the two computers.
    Is there any way to sync certain folders (e.g. documents, music, movies...) between them automatically (like the Apple TV and the Mac)?
    Thanks a lot, cheers,
    J

    sorry- not a reply but a pile-on question. I'm thinking the same thing. I was going to upgrade a powerbook g4 to a new macbook pro and maybe add an external monitor, but i've been thinking instead of buying a new imac and pairing it with the g4. kind of like a 2 monitor arrangement but with 2 hard drives, chips etc. anyway, assuming i can do that i'd like the docs folders and calendar and mail to be synched on both machines in case i take the powerbook on the road.
    any thoughts?
    thnx

  • Synchronise Macbook with iMac

    I recently bought a Macbook pro. I also use my iMac. I copied all my files to my macbook but would like to synchronise the two everytime they are in the same network. Is there a possibility without placing all my documents in Icloud?

    No, that's not what iCloud is used for... you may want to Google "mac synchronize" and find some of the many apps out there that can keep your Documents, at least, synchronized.
    Good luck,

  • Network Windows Laptop with iMac

    Hello,
    To start with I am not quite sure if this is the right section, if not then please let me know and i will move the thread.
    I am looking to find a way to connect on my iMac through my windows based laptop and specifically on my Movies folder. i have my laptop connected on my TV. On my Preferences i have the file sharing turned on.
    First of all...Is it possible?
    Regards

    Should be. See the following:

    Of course you should also check online help by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching on relevant terms such as "sharing."

  • Network Adapter - LACP with iMac

    Hi,
    I've bought a new iMac 27" a few weeks ago - now I'm thinking about the Thunderbolt Display as an Add-On... ;-)
    Looking at the tech specs I've seen that the Thunderbolt Display has got an ethernet port also - which I think is primary used for MacBooks, when they connect to the cinema display.
    But if I got an ethernet already connected to my iMac, and adding an additional ethernet port to this, will my mac support LACP or any other port-aggregation protocol (my switch can do a lot - Cisco aka Linksys (cheap and good...))
    It's not an essential need - it was just an idea...
    Thanks, if anyone can answer my question...

    While I have not actually tested this, the answer should be yes.  Attempting to create a bonded interface will reveal both the built in and the display ethernet.  So the interface is showing the correct ports and it will allow you to bond them together.

  • TS3276 I have installed OS X Mavericks on macbook pro, macbook air & iMac but I am having terrible trouble with apple Mail. I need to take all accounts online frequently OR worse I have to quit mail and restart computer. Is anyone else having problems?

    I have installed OS X Mavericks on macbook pro, macbook air & iMac but I am having terrible trouble with apple Mail. I need to take all accounts online frequently OR worse I have to quit mail and restart computer. Is anyone else having problems?

    I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
    My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As".  So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail.  I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Here's what I know:
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
    The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
    I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update.  None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them.  This is maddening!  What can be done?  Apple?? Anyone???

  • I have an airport extreem network that works with two MacBooks.  I am trying to get my PC (IBM ThinkPad) to connect to the network.  The PC has airport for the PC downloaded but it will not recognize the network.  Any suggestons please!

    I have an airport extreem network that works with my two MacBooks and a iMAC.  I am having no luck in getting a PC (IBM ThinkPad0 that has the PC airport software to be recognized by the network.  Any suggestions?

    When you introduced the AirPort Extreme, you had a condition where you have two routers in series. The simpliest solution is to reconfigure the downstream router (in this case the Extreme) as a bridge. This will allow the upstream router to provide the required NAT & DHCP services to all network clients regardless of which router they are connected to.
    To reconfigure the Extreme as a bridge, you will use the AirPort Utility. (Note: I will provide the steps for using AirPort Utility v5.x)
    AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
    Internet > Internet Connection tab > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    If both Macs are on the same network, enable homesharing, you can then import music from one to the other without affecting what's already on there.

  • Networking MacBook and iMac

    I have gotten my MacBook into the iMac Network, but can't transfer or share files. If I drag a file into the MacBook , I get a window that asks to "Select the volumes to mount" and the choises are all ghosted, I can't do anything with this window. Can i create a MacBook Dropbox on the iMac? Or how do I transfer files. They're connected via firewire. Thanks, JM

    Bob, thanks for your interest. When I went into Sharing on the iMac, and enabled Personal File Sharing, with a computer name of "karen"(it's my wife's iMac) it put "karen" into the Network, and created a Public folder which contained a Dropbox. With this I can drag files to the dropbox, and retrieve them on the MacBook. However, when I do the same in Sharing on the MacBook, no Public folder and Dropbox appear. So, so far I can't transfer files from MacBook to iMac. Any help is appreciated. Jim

    You need OSX 10.7.2 or higher in order to access icloud.  The mobile me account is now defunct (it closed down more than a year ago).
