Networking or sharing Mail folders

How do you set up local Mail folders so that they can be networked (or shared) by more than one computer?
I have stored local Mail folders on my G4 desktop where I download received and sent emails. Problem is that I cannot access these local Mail folders from my iBook. Is there a way to do this in OSX 10.4.5?
Thanks.
Jeff
iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Greetings,
The problem with this is that local folders and their indexes cannot be accessed by two clients at one time. Even following that, each program would have to rebuild indexes each time it accessed the network as updates could have been enacted by another client. Local mailboxes are simply not designed for this.
That said, the only way to manage this would be by mounting shares over a network and using aliases or unix hard links, but I cannot attest to how well that will work.
This kind of functionality is what IMAP mail servers are designed for. With the storage space that .Mac offers, you can store a lot of email on the servers. You can run your own server using several software packages such as Mac OS X Server, CommuniGatePro, and Dovecot.

  • 10.6 mail server shared IMAP folders not working on 10.9 apple mail

So we thought we upgrade a MBPro to 10.9 for some testing and low and behold, we already encountered a serious problem... well, at least for us.
We operate a 10.6.8 mail server which also hosts shared IMAP folders, to which team members subscribe on a per project basis.
Unfortunately, in Apple Mail v7.0 we can now no longer subscribe to individual IMAP folders it simply shows all and does not allow for individual folders to be deselected.
We realise it is early days, but it seems like a massive oversight to not detect such a bug....?

Unfortunately. the latest Apple Mail update (version 7.0, build 1822) still does not resolve this.
We are really hoping that this gets resolved soon, as the obivous direct problem is that Apple Mail 7.0 downloads all emails in Public IMAP folders will result in massive problems for all Macs with limited HD capacity, e.g. for all our laptop users with SSDs.
Btw. the same applies to KERIO 8.2 based solutions... http://forums.kerio.com/t/25890//

  • Sharing mail foders across a large network

Is it possible in Tiger to share mail folders across a network?
If I create a mail folder called Project, say, on my machine, and there are
10 people in the team, all networked, is it possible to share my Project mail folder so that any team member can access the project email folder?
Similarly, can I access a folder they have set up?
    Thanks.

If all Macs are connected by cable to the LAN you can do what you want. Put the library on an external HD formatted for OS X Extended (journaled) and set the Ownership to be ignored.
Setup an account on the Mac that the EHD is connected to so all can log in to that account and access the EHD. Remember, *only one person can use the library at a time and you should not access the library wirelessly* as Terrence warned against. That's a recipe for disaster.

  • Network File sharing in SharePoint 2013 portal

    Hi Everyone
I have a set of network folders(shared folder in some server) and want to make use of all this in SharePOint as a portal. So that i can eliminate the use of Network folder sharing concept. Bacially i need to know whether we have any OOB template/s available
in SharePoint 2013 or its a custom development ?

    Hi Prashanth,
There are multiple ways to move content from fileShares to SharePoint.
Step 1: Create the SharePoint Information Architecture - create a site collection preferably chose a document center template, create document libraries and folders as per the network folder structure in your organization.
Step 2: Map your File Share as Network drive in your client machine, and same way map your SharePoint website document library as network drive too. Drag and drop files.
Note there are 2 issues for this approach,
    1) your document metadata will be lost, the last modified by will change to the account with which you have logged into SharePoint while copying, and the last modified time will be changed.
    2) Its a tedious manual approach if you have lots of files.
Now for retaining the metadata you will need to depend upon a 3rd party tools ( or this codeplex solution: http://f2sp.codeplex.com/ (I havent verified that this works with Sp 2013 or not).
Using 3rd party tools has the advantage of retaining metadata and any issues with file naming conventions will also be taken care of most of the prominent tools which otherwise needs to be taken care by administrator manually. - Note SharePoint has file
    naming conventions - https://support2.microsoft.com/kb/905231?wa=wsignin1.0.
Also In order to reduce the effort in second step you can also create content organizer rules and map your drop off library as the drag and drop location.

  • Network file sharing in Lion

I have some folders shared in Mac OS that was easily available to my other computers in network and guest OSs installed on virtual machine on Mac OS host but since I've upgraded to Lion sharing stoped to work "normally". I still can see my mac machine in network group but it no longer allow to connect as a "Guest", so I can only explore my shared folders having entered my Mac OS user login and password but doing that I get an access not only to shared folders but to the entire mac drive and all subfolders... How can I fix that and is it possible to use network file sharing in Lion as it was in SL and previously?

  • "Rules will only be run on items in mail folders"

"Rules will only be run on items in mail folders"
I have a client that is trying to create rules in Outlook and she is the owner of a shared mailbox. Whenever she creates a rule for either one of the mailboxes she is also getting the "Rules will only be run on items in mail folders" error message and the
rules will not run. Previous rules did run Monday, but stopped on Tuesday.
The user deleted the rules and attempted to recreate them, but received the same error message. I noted the previous posts, copied the questions and answered them. Hope this helps.
    1. How were the rules created? Was it created from Outlook or OWA  or any 3rd party tool?
Created in Outlook, not in OWA or a 3rd party application.
     2. Are these rules server side rules or client side rules
They are created client side and saved server side. Exchange Server is 2010.
     3. Are these rules set for public folders or folders under mailbox
Rules are on a mailbox that the user owns and on a separate mailbox that the user has owner control on.
     4. Were these rules working before?
The rules worked on Monday 11/19/2012, but stopped working the next day. The last software updates were on 11/15/2012
I also ran a repair on MS Office and the error message still comes up.

This thread is old but I thought I would add the information I have learned.
This problem all revolves around the option
“Enable Rules on all RSS Feeds”.
You have to check that in order to run any rules against RSS downloads but when you do, you get that message.
The option makes Outlook process the RSS Feeds folder which it normally skips (like Calendar,
Contacts, etc) and the RSS messages coming in.  Although the RSS items look like regular Outlook e-mails, they are different and they are normally ignored unless that option is enabled.  Because of those two
things, you get the pop-up message – which is not an error - it’s telling you that it’s can’t process non-mail folders and messages.  You can usually fix it  by setting your RSS Feeds to download into a SUB-FOLDER of the RSS Feeds folder.
Outlook actually want’s it that way and makes it hard to specify the root “RSS Feeds”.
You will still get the message less often but it will have a checkbox with, “Do not show this message again”.
Check that option because it’s just informative. and you should be all set.
I did the testing for this on Outlook 2007 not using Exchange.  If someone else finds a situation where this doesn't apply or work, poke around non-mail folders and see why Outlook is processing them.

  • After Tiger to Leopard conversion shared user folders stopped working

    Hi,
Today i updated our mailserver to leopard. This server is also the OD master. Directly updated to 10.5.1 to have the latest bugfixes. Most things seem to work ok, but somehow our shared folders are not visible anymore. Checked the rights on them with cyradm and those are still good. When opening the account in thunderbird i can see the boxes but i cannot select them (can chose to subscribe / unsubscribe though). Has anybody else experienced this or know the answer to this problem?
    Best regards,
    Eelco

since i am testing leopard server with tiger and leopard clients i just noticed this problem seems somehow related to mail 3.1 accessing IMAP ACLs differently to mail 2.x, as tiger client to leopard server works fine in picking up shared imap folders.
result: atm assigning ACLs individually seems to be the only way to share imap folders... ;0(
any ideas on how to make group ACLs work again would be highly appreciated.

  • Strange behavior of entourage with shared IMAP folders

    Hi the list,
I have a strange behavior with entourage 11.2.5 with shared IMAP folders. Here's what I'd like to do :
All this has to do with spamassassin and spamtrainer. Some of our mails accounts are IMAP ones, but most are POP only and I don't want them to be IMAP. But I also want both IMAP and POP users to have some IMAP access to shared mailboxes for spam and ham to be learned. For those who are using IMAP accounts, that's not a problem with shared mailboxes. But, considering those with only POP accounts, I decided to create a dedicated user called anti_spam, using IMAP access, with two mail boxes that are spam and non_spam, so that all POP users could share this account.
Using SirAdmin, I set l/p/i ACL rights for anyone and the same for anti-spam user so that mail can't be read back with this shared account. Everything just works fine with Mail, but it doesn't work with Entourage. I set up an IMAP account for anti_spam to get an access to shared mailboxes even if main account is a POP one. Everything's fine except I can't write anything on mailboxes : I get an error 1025 and a denied access for writing. The only way to get write access to these mailboxes is to add "r" ACL to them with SirAdmin, which is NOT the solution as it would allow anybody to read mails. It's obvious it has more to do with Entourage than OS X mail service, all the more trying the same conf in Thunderbird is OK as expected.
I was just wondering if somebody here would have some idea of what could be wrong ...

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has a solution too as am having the same problem of not being able to write to IMAP mailboxes.

  • Sharing IMAP folders

Does OSX Mail Services allow for common shared IMAP folders between users. I am hoping to allow a number of users to share mboxes in order to allow them access to the entire project email and eliminate constant cc'ing and forwarding of email.
I have read on other discussions that this is possible with IMAP but I have not concluded that Mac's Mail will do so.
Any assistance would be greatly appreicated.
    Ryan.

    Sure, easist way is SirAdmin:

  • Data Mining shared mail box using powershell via com object Performance is really bad.

I was trying to pull a report from multiple shared mail boxes by configuring them in outlook. Everything works fine for me here but the problem is that the below script would need a minimum of 10-14 hours on weekly basis. Can you please comment me on how
can I get more performance? My average mailbox details and my observations are as below:
It would have about 35 sub folders recursively up to 3 levels in Inbox.
It would have ~ 300,000 to 400,000 emails.
I donot know if this can be easily accomplished via EMC Shell but I dont have it either.
And these are configured in Outlook 2013.
The biggest folder has about 60000 emails.
Even plain export without any filter or calculated values in the output is taking the similar time.
I have even tried to use pick folder and manually executed multiple instances (~10) for each folder but the performance was really worst.
    -------------------------Script Starts here--------------------------------------

    Aah, Sorry COM object....
I have observed that for the execution of the below line hardly it is taking 1-2 seconds for processing 50,000 items and it is similar even if we dont apply the filter.
    $items=$Folder.Items.Restrict($sFilter)
Just got a doubt and found that the performance issue is not while processing the data but export is taking so much of time. For Example: Execution of the below line starts giving out put on the fly.
    $items|Select-Property$props|ft-a
Even Out-File is taking so much of time. So, I think I need to start looking out for string builder or Stream Writer rather using epcsv?

  • 4 Macs different network/file sharing errors on all

Out of the box current generation Mini with Yosemite can access one old Mini with 10.7 and it;s attached 3 external drives. The externals no problem, the folders inside of that Mac’s home folder show restricted access on most. Two MBPs running Mavericks can fully access other Macs and their attached drives.  None of those 3 Macs can access the new. It shows in “Shared” but displays “Not Connected” when attempting to open, none of the new Macs attached drives naturally are not accessible either. I’ve tried using my I.D. and get the login shakes, try Apple I.D. and get the same. When attempting to share screen with the new one on any of the others gives me the login prompt. That prompt will not take my I.D. or Apple I.D. I get an “Authentication failed to “……..” verify manx and password. The new Mini can not connect to the 2 MPBS running Mavericks the same login window comes up and get the same failed message when trying both I.D.s. Or it says not connected and I try the connect as.  Nor can I sharer the screen of the new Mini. I’ve tried turning off sharing then reboot turn sharing on reboot, no luck.
Have gone into file sharing and added each folder and drive making sure that all users have read & write enabled on all of them. No luck. Have done the same thing on the 2 MPBS and still can not connect. The two MBPS are on the WiFi my network the Minis are wired to the network. Shared in the side bar only shows the new Mini and Others icon, click Others to get to network drives where I have attempted to connect. Attempting to access the new mini with old Mini gives me the “connection failed” message. So new mini can access old mini but with restrictions in Home Folder, old Mini can not access new mini in any way.
The other 3 Macs all connect to each other with both screen sharing and file sharing and never a problem. They just can’t connect to the new Mini. Firewall and FileVault are off on all Macs. I do not use Time Machine on any of them. The new Mini replaced one from the previous generation that runs Mavericks, that one has not been hooked up yet, still power off sitting on a shelf. Do not want to have a 5th problem yet, let me get the first 4 talking to each other first.
Did any of this make sense? Does anyone have suggestions. I have tried all things found here with search “file sharing”. Forgot to mention, on the new Mini the problem was there out of the box and remained after running the OS update.
    Thanks

No need, I'm the only user and have  myself set on all as admin.  Never in all my near 30 years of networking Macs at home and managing my companies 600 or so Mac Network,  with 68k, PPC, Intel units all running systems 7 - 8 - 9 -10 and all their mid versions and never had a lick of trouble with any sharing services. I've always just stuck them on the wire, fired up, and hit share, tick the boxes then Boom, all was seen by all. Same at home up till recently I had a G5 Tower as a server mixed in with all the intel, never a hiccup.  The only troubles would be if a router or switch burned out.  None of my iPhones, or iPods of various generations have had a problem with the home WiFi, the ones set up for disk usage have always shone up in the shared section of the sidebar, since have turned off disk usage so not part of the problem.
    Thanks for trying though

  • I need to use Time Machine to recover my old Mail Folders

I switched to a different ISP company for my email. When I setup the new account, it removed all my old Inbox and other folders (Drafts) in Mail. I've been using the Apple Time Machine - so I'd like to retrieve the proper file(s) so I can get some much needed DRAFTS in my old mail account.
What file(s) is needed to copy back so I can see my old mail folders? Thanks!

Csound1's comment may have some bearing here.
Although Time Machine backups to a network share are not officially supported by Apple,, a lot of users try it anyway with the AirPort Extreme...an equivalent Apple router with similar features to the Netgear...and they report mixed results.
Works fine for some, not for others. No one can really explain why this is, other than Apple does not support it.
As a test, if you connect the drive directly to your Mac computer, can Time Machine "see" the drive that way?
If Time Machine can see the drive when it is directly attached to the computer, but not see it when connected to the Netgear, then the options may have run out.
Other than trying a post on the Netgear forum to see if any users have been successful with this, I'm out of ideas at this point.

MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • I clicked to open one of my mail folders and when it opened, it immediately deleted all of the items in it!  Why and can I get them back???

In my email app, I clicked to open one of my mail folders.  When it opened, it immediately deleted all of the emails inside that folder.  This happened with all the others too.  How can I stop this and is it possible to get that mail back.

Did you try to open teh fle by double-clicking its icon? If the file was made with an older version of Office, you may get that message. Try opeing PP and, from its "File" menu, see if you can open the ppt. I've foundthat often gets around that message and then yo ucan save the file from the newer version.
If that doesn't work, consider asking in the Microsoft Office: Mac forums here:

PowerPoint is not an Apple product and it seems a lot of people around here avoid Office.
