Networking problem from Mac running Leopard to Mac running Yosemite

I have a curious networking problem and I would love some suggestions about what might be causing the problem and how to cure it.
I have a PowerMac G5/1.8DP running Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard with a number of external drives attached that I use as backup for all my RAW files. These are mirrored on three drives.
When I mount the drives on my iMac desktop, running OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite, over a gigabit ethernet network, two things are happening - 1. some of the folders are invisible (although they are actually there and populated on the PowerMac) and 2. spurious, empty, folders with odd names appear on the Yosemite desktop.
I have checked on the PowerMac to see that the folders all contain files - they do - yet over the LAN they appear as empty folders with gobbledygook names. This happens on all my Macs running Yosemite so it appears to be a Yosemite problem, rather than a Leopard problem. To further reinforce that I have also checked the PowerMac from three other Macs, running Tiger and Leopard, and they can see exactly what is on the drives, with no missing folders or oddly named folders.
The images show 1. the folder as it appears on the PowerMac running OS X 10.5.8, with two folders RAW Files 26 and RAW Files 28 highlighted, 2. the same folder seen on the Yosemite desktop with two folders, RAW Files 26 and 28, missing and 3. the same folder on Yosemite with three oddly named empty folders.
I am at a loss to know how to cure it and hope that someone will be able to help.

You can never, never, never transfer any installed version of PSE on any platform. You must always install from scratch on a new machine. By trying to do so you have made more work for yourself. You will need to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
which will not seem to do anything, but is a necessary step to break the links within the program. Then you can go around and manually remove everything related to PSE that you can find, not only from Applications, but also from your username>library>preferences and the library at the top level of your hard drive>application support>adobe. You must go to these locations manually; spotlight will not help you with this type of search.
Then you can reinstall from your original media or from the download here:

  • Mapping Network Drives From Mac to Windows

I'm wondering if anyone else has had any success with this. I am mapping a network drive from my Mac to my PC (Windows 7). I moved all of my photos to the Mac so I want my laptop to look there for the files. I have no problem with other PC's in the house but when I try to map to the Mac I receive the following error:
"The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please enter another."
I copy and paste the  address into Windows Explorer and it opens no problem. I click start and paste it into the search area, same thing, no problem. Any ideas?

If you search within this forum (search block, upper right), you will see that PAHU has answered this several times. For example, search for "UFRII windows."
Printing on OS X isn't quite as simple as on Windows - quite often, manufacturers provide drivers that are limited to the comm protocol "they want you to use," and Windows Printing (SMB) is usually not one of those. In fact, most USB printers get USB-only drivers.

  • WD external problems from MAC to PC

So I have 1TB WD external hard drive that I currently have formated for MS-DOS(FAT) so that I can use it both on MAC and PC. However, when I do connect to a PC, for whatever reason, it shows each file I have twice. One being highlighted and unopenable and the other fine (temp files?). Doesn't seem to a be a real issue just more of keeping the harddrive easy to navigate and sort. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
Also, on the pc there is no option to 'eject' the disc. Is this something with the harddrive or ****** windows?

How do I format an external drive (My Passport) from mac to pc (iOS Snow Leopard) without losing my data?
1: Remove the data off the drive
You can do this by installing MacDrive on the Windows PC to access the Mac HTFS+ format
Or you can use a Mac to remove the data.
2: Format the drive on the PC (preferably) by right clicking on the drive and choosing format
A: If data on the drive will have larger than 4GB sized files, then the format you want is exFAT
(if your using Windows XP, you can download exFAT from Microsoft)
B: If the data on the drive will always have less than 4GB sized files, then you should choose FAT32 for most compatibility with all other machines.
3: If you can only format the drive on the Mac then open Apple's Disk Utility in the Utilities folder
Select the drive on the far left, it should have the makers name and a size, then click Partition.
Now select the box and click Options: MBR  Then select Format: exFAT or MSDOS (FAT32) and click Apply.
4: If any chance you need to secure delete any data remaining on the drive form being recovered, use the Erase with Zero (or 7x for very secure) before formatting.
Note: Formatting a drive on the PC there will be a option for NTFS, this is for access by Windows only, but software can be installed on the Mac to read/write this format.
If you use exFAT or FAT32, the Mac can read and write this format just like Windows can, no need for extra software.
Linux can read/write just about any format.

  • Photoshop CC2014 window scroll problem on MAC OS Yosemite

Since your today update  of PS CC2014, i cannot move PS window from one display to the second one on MAC OS Yosemite.
The PS window seems to be opened as full screen and this is probably the reason.
On Yosemite if an application is opened full screen you can not move it.
Thanks in advance for your answer.

You can change the location, I just wanted to be sure....
Since the issue is systemwide, I'd suggest dowloading and installing the 10.6.8 Combo.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Can't phone all contacts from Mac with Yosemite.

I can't phone all contacts from my Mac with Yosemite. Some of the audio icons are greyed out. Any solutions?

    hmmmm....*strokes beard*
I'm assuming you want to transfer all your contacts between sim and phone memory all at once.
to do this, go to contacts on your phone then select "options", then select "Mark\Unmark". You then get a little side menu. in this side menu select "Mark All". all you phone contact should now have ticks next to them. Now Press "Options" again and now you should have the option to "Copy to sim Directory". and from sim to phone do this in reverse.
    Peace out

  • Network problem - two Macs running Leopard won't connect or share

We've just bought a refurbed Mac book Pro since our HP notebook is so bloody unreliable and I suspect is about to cark it through overheating/inadequate cooling. The only problem is that networking it with our G5 is turning into a real nightmare, and embarrassingly both the HP and an old desktop PC can not only see and share with each other they can also see and be seen by both Macs and use the printer connected to the G5, and absolutely everything connects to the internet and shows up in the DHCP list on the router. Even more annoying was that the Macs connected initially this morning when we got the Macbook Pro out of the box, but after we'd done the initial round of software updates (10.5.2 was installed on the MBP) we've had nothing but trouble. Quite often they'd be in the shared list in the Finder window but wouldn't connect when clicked. Other times they wouldn't be there at all. We've even tried connecting the two over firewire, which worked for the G5 but not the MBP although the MBP could see the folders on the external hard drive we use for Time Machine backups of the G5.
File sharing is on for both Macs (and printer sharing for the G5 obviously), AFP is enabled, firewall settings have been moved to Allow All... everything looks right but it doesn't work right. Right now I've managed to get the G5 to connect to the MBP using the Go>Connect to Server method mentioned elsewhere here, but it's one way only. It didn't work when we tried it on the MBP.
The network is part cabled, part wifi. We've got a Motorola Surfboard cable modem/gateway/wireless router, both notebooks are connecting wirelessly, both desktops are cabled. If it makes any difference both Macs are on 10.5.5, the old desktop is Win2K (please don't laugh) and the HP notebook is Vista.
    Any suggestions?

Well, it all seems to work now though I can't explain why and have no idea if it would work for others generally. But what we did, having reinstalled 10.5.2 and got the MacBook Pro back to exactly how it was when it arrived, was to install one update at a time checking that the two Mac could still communicate after each stage and with regular backups to be extra safe. The order we did the updates in was:
    Airport Utility
    Remote Desktop Client
    iTunes
    Front Row
    Mac OS X Combined
    Migration and DVD/CD Sharing
    Java
    Airport Extreme
    QuickTime
    QuickTime H.264 Compatibility
    Security Update
    Safari
Maybe the order doesn't make a difference, I really wouldn't know. But then it doesn't make sense to me that updating one item at a time would make a difference either. However, we now have the network working properly with the same network settings used before when it was hit and miss at best. Glynn, maybe it's worth giving it a try on yours though without a clue why it's now working here I couldn't call it a solution as such.

  • Problems printing to network printers from Mac OS X 10.6.2

I have three network printers connected to my Mac by IPAddress. When I send any print job except a PDF to any of the printers I get 20 copies of my document. This is true no matter what application I am trying to print from, including printing a test page from the printer settings. I have reset the printing system by [Control] clicking in the Printers list box. I have tried different drivers, including the Generic print driver. All printers HP printers. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Same issue on my WRT610N V2. I am using iMac Intel running 10.6.2. Error -36 prompted when copying files to the USB share disk from the Finder. Working fine when on PC running XP.
Another issue is DDNS can't report the router IP to DynDNS.com although it status that the update is successful and completed. After updated, the router's IP is still different to the IP shown on the DynDNS.com. I need to type the IP manually to the DynDNS.com
Hope the new firmware would fix these problems.
    Thanks

  • Network Printer Problem from Mac to Windows

Hi all, hoping someone can help. I have a Canon MF4350d printer which is shared on a windows machine. I can access the windows machine, I have installed the latest drive for this printer onto my mac, from the canon website and when i go to print I get the following:
    Canon UFR ll Printer Driver
    An error occurred.: -50
Then the printer icon starts jumping and when i click on that I see the following under status:
    On Hold(Authentication required)
I have yet to print from this macbook to a networked printer. Very disappointing.
Anyone have this issue? Anyone know of a working fix? Thanks Guys.

  • Poor Incoming Network Performance from Mac Mini

I have a 1.5 Core Solo Intel mac mini running Leopard 10.5.4. I currently have it connected directly via patch cable to a eMachines wintel running Windows Server 2k3 that I'm using for a server. The weirdness comes in whenever I'm trying to transfer files back and forth across the Ethernet connection. Both Ethernet cards are manually set to 100mbit full-duplex.
I have enabled SMB sharing on both machines, and I have the FTP server setup on my mac mini. Below are the speeds on which I'm getting file transfers:
    SMB:
    Mini -> 2k3: 8MB/sec
    2k3 -> Mini: 3MB/sec
    FTP:
    Mini -> 2k3: 11MB/sec
    2k3 -> Mini: 3MB/sec
I've tried disabling IPv6 on the Ethernet port in the mac mini. The firewall is turned off. And surely the stock hard drive in the mac mini can write faster than 3MB/sec. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this insane slowdown on incoming file transfers? I've looked through the forums for any possible fixes and have come up blank.
    Thanks in advance,
    Josh Hogan

@ SilverSkyRat: Permission were all correct, but no connection login as a network user. Thank you for your input
@ BDAqua: You are right. Thank you also
I received the this link from Apple regarding my connectivity issue: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4945?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
However, I found a simple solution to over come my problem: here is how I did it:
1- I created a Network user jsmith using Server App with password as "password"
2- Then went to System Preferences\Users & Groups\ and create a standard user account as jsmith with the same password as "password"
Then I was able to map my network drive that resides on the Mac mini server to a Windows XP machine. Both password of jsmith has to be the same in order for the mapping to take place.
This solution resolved my connectivity issue. However, there is one thing I do not like about it:
1- I have to make sure that when a user changes his/her network password, I have to change his/her password at the server...it is double the work
2- Everytime I create a Network User Account, I have to create the same account on the local server with the same password.
Thnak you All for your input

    Your eMac is more promising:

It has a mini-VGA output port.
I'd take the eMac (get the VGA display adapter to connect) or ask around, if anyone lets you use his/her iBook or PowerBook to present. Much easier than mess with your presentation on a PC (and you know the Mac
If you manage to get the presentation right in PowerPoint on the Mac, you could burn a CD to transport the file to the PC. This usually works without any problem. (If the PC does not recognize the memory stick, it could be it runs on an old version of Windows, and needs to have USB drivers installed for the memory sticks.)
    Hope this helps

PS: If all else fails, to mail to the other person: divide the file (part of the slides, only slides with pictures matter) into chunks that are smaller than 2MB after conversion to PP - burning a CD is much faster.

  • Network question from mac newbie

I have managed to get my wireles network up and running with internet connection and even sharing with my PC.
Connecting with that pc is o.k. through finder, but is it possible to have a simple short cut on the desktop to access the sharing PC quickly? This appears each session but disapears when I shut down,i.e will the mac make the connection automatically on start up so I can just click on that icon to connect straight away?
    Hope that makes sense!

If it works the same way it did in OS 9... select the icon of the mounted server on your desktop, and go to File -> "Make Alias" (command-L by default).
You can also use the Connect To dialogue box (command-K) and then add the server to your favourites using the little + sign next to the URI.

  • Proxy authenication problems from Macs.... argh

I am seeing this regularly in mixed Windows/Macs environments where all machines proxy over 8080 to the TMG box (integrated authentication).
I can have a firewall rule that allows traffic from Internal to External over HTTP/HTTPS for Domain Users and both clients, Macs and PCs, will be able to browse internet fine so long as they have approrpiate proxy server settings configured on either their
    machine or browser.
However, some websites that use Flash or Java, for viewing videos result in the Macs NOT working.  Looking in the firewall loggging I can see that access is being denied because the Mac is not passing user credentials and is attempting to go out
using anonymous credentials (which is not allowed).  This ONLY happens for the Macs, and ONLY happens on certain websites, and ONLY for stuff like Java/Flash, etc.
Anyone else running into this?  It's happening so frequently that I am about to just turn OFF all proxying to TMG and have everyone go out as secure NAT clients because everytime this happens, I have to create a specific rule for THAT website to allow
    SecureNAT.
    Thoughts??

    Hi,
Your analysis is correct. TMG (or any other proxy) will ask user for authentication, if the rule is configured to do so. Its upto the client (browser or software entity trying to access internet) to authenticate to the proxy. If that entity is not designed
for such proxy authentications, they will fail to access the resource.
If you see in your logs that the browser/application (Safari/Java) on MAC is unable to authenticate to proxy, thats exactly the reason its failing. If you look above that, you should see 407 messages, where the proxy server is telling the client to
    negotiate and authenticate for proxy.
Hope this help. If you have any furhter questions, please let me know.

Don't waste your time or money on the adaptors. I have a hp 2207h and I tried th dvi to hdmi and the dvi to vga, neither work, I still don't have a working monitor. Waited on the phone for tech support for 30 minutes. Then got a total line of crap.
This monitor works flawlessly with my comcast motorola hd cable box, with my sony dvd player, with my toshiba laptop, with my hp computer. But will not work with a mac mini... The only logical reason given the wide varity of equipment it will work on, is that apple does not support HDMI standards, if they did, it would work.
The apple does work on my 40 in tv. But thats not where I want it. So, this is useless to me. And after the line of crap I got from tech support, I'm thinking about quiting apple all together.
This ***, I was really excited about my first apple computer. Now after 4 hours, and nothing but frustration and no support at all from apple, I'm thinking about giving up and sticking with PC's from here on out. Worst experiance ever.
I may even switch to android and chuck my 4...

  • Wireless printing problems from Mac to my new Officejet 6700

I have just purchased the Officejet 6700 for my office.  We have 7 mac laptops and one HP.  Currently the only printer that can printer wirelessly to the 6700 is the PC.  The first day I had the printer I was able to get my MacBook Air to print wirelessly, but since then it says it can't find the printer.  That is the same message all the other Macs are getting.
    Any advice??

    Hi,
I would rather suspect Multicasting lack of support or wrong configutation within your router, this will explain that behavior as Apple computers, unlike Windows, dicsover the device using Bonjour which relies on Multicasting.
Please let me know your router brand and model in order to better understand the model.
Additionally did you used a different multifunction device over the network prior the 6700?
