Networking question (LAN based connection)

My Macbook has been running relatively well up until about a week or so ago. My internet randomly stopped working (but only my network connection which I connect via a LAN in an apartment building), my WiFi when a signal could be found worked fine. This first time I checked Network Diagnostics and for Ethernet connection and Network Connection I had a Green dot and a Yellow dot respectively while ISP, Network and Internet all had Red dots next to them. So i summed this up to an internet or network problem.
Then exactly one week later the same thing happened only after a day with no internet I checked the Network Diagnostics and all sections (ISP, Ethernet, etc) displayed Red dots and all were listed as 'failed'. Now I'm concerned it may be my Macbook.
A friend plugged their Windows based computer into the network cable and got internet in both cases, the first case I summed up to network problems with OSX compatibility, now I'm not so sure.
WiFi works but I have yet to test Ethernet on another LAN.
Any suggestions on how I can confirm it is the network and not my Macbook, or any ways I can troubleshoot this problem? Note: The first instance I was able to renew my DCHP and IP Address easily, this time nothing shows up in those input boxes.

Sorry, I misread the sentence which you mentioned it.
Ok, it does sound like there is something amiss with the ethernet card or it's configuration in the G5 or your Linksys may be set to filter out this particular device by either IP or MAC address.
First, I'd check to see if your Linksys has any applied filters, by going to the Linksys Advanced > Filters page. Look to see if there are any values assigned to either "Filtered Private IP Range" or "Private MAC Filter." If there are not filters set, specifically for the G5, then try turning off your Linksys for at least 10-15 minutes and then repowering it up.
If this doesn't help, then it's time to troubleshoot the ethernet card or configuration on your G5. Are you sure the IP Address, Subnet Mask & Gateway values are correct for your network? (Sorry, just needed to ask.) If so, have you tried the following pings?
127.0.0.1
192.168.1.102
192.168.1.1
Did all of them complete without errors? If it fails at the first two addresses, most likely the problem is with the card. If it fails at the last address, I'd check the ethernet cable used between the G5 & the Linksys.
The last thing I can think of is my 8-port Linksys has the option to set port 8 as an uplink port via a recessed switch. Not sure about the 4-port model. As you probably are already aware, when used as an uplink port you would normally add another hub/switch to the port and it wouldn't work for computers.

  • Connect to two networks, ethernet(LAN w/o internet), wireless(w/ internet)

so i'm trying to connect to two networks, a wireless and a wired one
the wireless(which connect to an access point) is a network which allows me to connect to internet, and the wired(regular router) one is a small home local network, which does not connect to internet.
if i just have the wireless one on, unplug/disable wired one, i can connect to internet just fine, but if i do plug in ethernet cable, then all of the sudden i can't connect to internet anymore.
in my Network Coonections window, it does show that the wireless one has "Access to Network and Internet" while the wired one has "Access to Network only". I'd assume that the computer is smart enough to find its way to internet, but apparently not.
is there a way to set a preference, so vista tries to find internet conncetion thru wireless first, before go on to the wired network?
I konw this is technically possible, because on my mac, i can set in such way that it takes certain connection first
    thanks in advance

I think I am getting it but still no joy.
On the WiFi connection to FIOS Router I have manually set metric to 1.
On Same PC in Ethernet I have removed gateway and set a metric to 10.
Before I did this connection to Internet was very slow when the Ethernet cable plugged in and Interface Enabled. After removing gateway and setting metrics access to Internet AOK.
I have working Homegroup, network printer but no Internet access from Hardwired PC.
Cannot ping FIOS router @ 192.168.1.1 from hardwired PC. Destination host unreachable.
NMAP Quick Scan 192.168.1.* never sees 192.168.1.1
So, I'm still not routing properly.

  • Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
    Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

  • LAN-based Failover & intermittent drop issues

Have 2 PIX535s each at remote sites configured for LAN-based failover. There is a VLAN("abc")designed for failover, but in that same VLAN are servers.
    My setup is as follows:
PIX535 connects to a DMZ switch using 4 connections: the Inside intf & 3 other intfs.
On that same DMZ switch connects my core switch on the inside network. The core switch is the Root Bridge for the said VLAN ("abc"). It trunks this VLAN, along with others, to the DMZ switch.
On that same DMZ switch are a number of servers that are in this vlan ("abc").
When I configure one of the PIX interfaces to be in this same VLAN and be used for LAN-based failover I get intermittently lose of connectivity to different servers at different times. Its never any one particular server.
When I use another PIX interface, still connecting to this same DMZ switch, but in another VLAN ("xyz"), for LAN-based failover, I dont get any problems.
This other PIX interface is also being used for State failover. The idea is to have two separate interfaces, one each for LAN-based & State failover.
What could be the possible cause of this intermittent loss of connectivity to the servers in VLAN "abc" when I switch LAN-based failover to the PIX interface that connects to a VLAN "abc" port on the DMZ switch.

  • Hey Everyone...  I have a networking Question...

Ok well its more then just one networking question...
I'm working on a game engine (2d) and for the time being it just has two blocks in a 600 by 480 area, both controled by user input on a single comp. I would like to change this so that i can have the blocks be controled by sepeart computers. I know this is possible I just dont know how, any help would be great.
My experience with Java is some what limited i've only been programing for the past 6 months and i've never messed with any network code before.
Any and all help would be great
    Thanks
    Mike

Boy, that other poster was really helpful, yes? :-P
What you probably want to do is open a "socket" between one computer and the other. (TCP is probably the easiest/best for your application, as opposed to UDP). This is actually pretty simple, and basically consists of:
(this client/server arrangement is the easiest. Peer-to-peer would work too, but is generally more complex.)
    1. Computer A decides to become the server and opens a java.net.ServerSocket on port 1234.
    2. Computer B opens a java.net.Socket to computer A's port 1234.
    3. Computer A accepts the connection and gets a java.net.Socket from the ServerSocket.
    4. Now anything computer A writes to the Socket is recieved by computer B, and vice-versa. This is a TCP connection and is stream-based, so it should be familiar if you've done any Java I/O before; in face, you can use java.io.Reader's and Writers, and so on with your Socket.
See http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/sockets/ for a good introduction to sockets.

  • Our home network has multiple devices connected by iCloud. Having problem with Calendar. On one iMac, all the events are duplicated. How can I correct that problem? Under the Calendar accounts, I had my Apple id listed and also just iCloud.

Our home network has multiple devices connected by iCloud: 2 iMacs, 2 iPhone 4s, 1 MacPro Laptop, and 1 iPad 2.  When using Calendar, all the events were
duplicated on my husbands iMac.  On his computer, under Calendar accounts, I had included iCloud and also my iCloud ID.  I thought that because I had two accounts listed that were connected to iCloud, that might be the cause of the duplication.  When I deleted ithe calendars from one of the accounts, it resulted
in deleting all of the events on all of our network devices!
I have since entered some new events into Calendar from my iMac and from my iPhone.  These appear correctly on all devices except my husband's iMac where they are again all duplicated.
I have two questions: 1)  How can I eliminate the duplicated events on my husband's computer and 2) How do I retrieve the old wiped out Calendar events from
Time Capsule.  I don't know how to find Calendar in the Time Capsule.  If I find the Calendar information in Time Capsule, how do I transfer it to my current Calendars?
I was obtaining phone help from one of the Apple techs at Apple Support, but our call was disconnected part way through.  Didn't know how to reconnect with the tech.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Multiple gateway networking question

We are a small company owned by a big company. We already have our own network/gateway/ISP which works fine, but our parent wants to install their own T1 line to give us access to their private network, which contains things we'll need (which we want) but also restricts and slows down our Internet access (which we don't want). I'm told there should be a way of switching automatically between the two gateways without having to manually change router addresses (ie. default would be our network, but it would switch to parent's network if the particular request cannot be fulfilled via ours). Any ideas on how to set something like this up? Sorry... I'm a bit of a networking noob.

The easiest way depends on how the T1 and your existing ISP connection terminate in your network.
Ideally both connections should connect to the same router - then you point all your machines to use this router as their default gateway and the router takes care of sending traffic to your ISP/the T1 based on destination IP.
If you don't have a single router that both connections terminate on then you'll have two routers in your network. At this point you have two options:
One is to set one router as your default router and set a static route on that router (if it supports it) so that traffic for the main company's network is sent over to the other network:
    Host --> Router1 --> ISP
                    |
                    |
                    V
                   T1 router --> head office
In this model you only need to make one change on the default router and you're done.
If that doesn't work for some reason (e.g. your ISP router doesn't support static routes) then you can setup static routes on each host so that each host sends the traffic to the appropriate router:
Host --> (default route) --> ISP router --> internet
      |
      v
(static route) -->T1 router --> head office
The disadvantage here is that you need to make a configuration change on each machine, typically along the lines of adding a static route:
    sudo route add -net <subnet of head office> <IP of T1 router>
This tells your machine to send all traffic for <subnet of head office) to <IP of T1 router>
Either way you need to have some understanding of the network infrastructure - IP address/subnets, router addresses, etc.

  • Advice for Building Small Network Question

    Hello,
I am building a small network environment which will connect to a larger office, scalability is important.  We will begin having about 30 users which will all need VOIP services.  The VOIP services will be hosted by a cloud provider.  My question is as of now I am looking to obtain a Cisco 2921 ISR Router and then a Cisco 2960-X 48Gig POE, and my main question is I am confident the switch can handle the power and operation of the phones but just to make sure I should not run into any problems with the router as far as forwarding the data, correct?  Any other comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

  • IMac slows down wifi/LAN cable connection

    Hello,
I came across a quiet unique and annoying problem, that I have not seen being discussed so far.
I spend the last 3 weeks trying to solve my internet/wifi connection following all kinds of posts here.
Problem: Wifi/Lan internet connection is slow (less than 0.8mbit/s)
Problem only appears when I login with an iMac via wifi OR lag cable
    iMac, 2011 27`` Mac OS 10.7.5
    Background:
I have a 20mbit/s internet connection with my provider. works fine on iPad, iPhone, appleTV HTC one mini, etc… BUT as soon, as I login with my iMac, the internet connection slows down to less than 1 mbit/s
    I have tried following solutions:
    - live box (router) was exchanged and is brand new
    - security settings on router changes (wpa2 etc)
    - all channels on router tested from 1-13
    - keychain saved passwords for Wifi and router deleted, PRAM reset
    - renewed lease of connected devices (no IP conflict)
    - shut down wifi on iMac - connection with all devices great, as soon as i switch wifi on, all devices lose their high speed connection and go down to less than 1mbit/s
    - connected iMac via LAN cable: same problem, all speed is lost
    - iMac is not in the network - speed is great
    - connected iMac via time capsule wifi, same problem. connected iMac via netgear extender, same problem
also, if I open network preferences and start the "assist me" app and run diagnostics, all dots are green except the ISP and server, bit most of the time they switch to green immediately, but connection is still slow.
Reception bar is on "3", so signal strength is no problem, and I´d like to emphasize that this is also happening on LAN cable. and again, if the iMac is disconnected from wifi AND / OR LAN, all other devices work fine.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
    Thanks!

Although I have been on Mac OS for a while now, I have never had to troubleshoot faulty network in the mac itself.
OSX does apparently have a safe mode boot..
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Try that.. as that gives you the same thing as windows with all the extras left out, so you get a basic operating system only and you can see if the problem still exists.. if it does.. I would simply bite the bullet.. wipe the Mac.. reinstall the OS and then carefully reinstall your applications from original disks/downloads and move your operating files back .. but start a different user on the computer and copy back the min you need to get working again.
If the problem still happens even in safe mode boot then do a hardware test.. because it is possible something has actually failed at the hardware level.

  • Qosmio X500: Lan/Internet connection get lost after period of time

    Hi all,.
I got the qosmio x500 for about half a year now...
I got this problem where after about 5 hours or less the lan/internet connection get lost.
I disabled the wireless connection and is using only the wired connnection now.
When it get disconnected... all devices seems to work seemlessly, no problem can be found. I checked the win7 network adaptor --and it seems to be connected properly.
I haven't got a slightest idea how to fix that.... Only a reset of the system and reloading the os results with a valid connection.
It is even stranger,. When using it for a piriod of time (listeding to audio streams from the web)... when getting back to the machine the audio connection seems to work properly.... but when trying to access other sites, or other machines in the homegroup, or network (under explorer). It result faulty.
Please guide me somehow how to fix the issue, it is bugging me a lot (all these resets to the machine probably doesn't do it any good as well).
    thanks in advance,.

    Hi,
It could be the energy saving feature of your network card.
Right click Network Icon on the status bar, choose 'Open Network Center and Sharing', Click on 'Connection', Click on 'Properties' (low left button), you'll see the tab with your Network Properties. Click 'Configure' (Upper right button), choose 'Power Management' (last right tab).
Uncheck 'Allow computer to shut down this device to save energy'. Probably your problem will now be solved.

  • Network locations and Airport connection

I've just installed Leopard on my MacBook Pro (late 2008) and did all the software updates (including AirPort Extreme Update 2008-004 which - as I found out too late - seems to cause a lot of problems).
Network System Preferences show funny beaviour: Every time I try to switch off AirPort connection for a new network location the network location will disappear completely and settings will switch back to the last active network location. So it is impossible to create a network location with AirPort inactive.
Apart from that, my System does not connect to my AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet, 802.11b) wireless LAN (not public, WEP-encrypted, MAC address filter). My other Macs (OS X 10.4 Tiger) connect to the AirPort wireless LAN without any problems. (I double-checked all the settings of course.)
Has anybody had similar problems? Thanks for your help.

Hi: located in england bought a new macbook pro upgraded leopard to 10.5.5 with that upgrade that got pulled very quickly.
I also have an old g4 with 10.4.11
The g4 works perfectly in recognizing the airport network and is up and running in no time. no problems.. the macbookpro with leopard has problems recognizing and logging in tothe the same router. it needs help or I just i there waiting. there is no set way of getting it back to working. but I tend to go into network preferences and it says airport logged on but no connection. the g4 is happy and set up. I then turn off airport and turn it on. eventually I am back and running just fine but do not go to sleep or close the machine cheers
ps. I work from locations with different routers and different isp's same problems......
therefore it must leopard...(or the airport card in the machine)
