Networking/setting up drop box

I have just bought an iMac and am trying to transfer some data from my old iBook G4 into my new iMac. I don't like the speed of the transfer through Migration Assistant or a USB Flash card. I wonder if I could set up my computers so that I would use the drop box in one in order to transfer data: a sort of a mini networking. Any tips would be most appreciated.

If you are using MA to transfer things from the G4 to the Intel they must be networked in some form. How are you currently connecting them?
A simple Mac network is with an ethernet cable connecting the two. In Mac Help in the Finder's Help menu go to Index>E>Ethernet>Connecting two computers using Ethernet
You can do it as well with AirPort, if both Macs have AirPort installed. Go to Mac Help>Index>A>AirPort>Creating a computer-to-computer network.
Be careful what you transfer from a G$ to an Intel Mac. Try reading Kappy's A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs

  • Setting up Drop Box Permissions

I am trying to setup a drop box, on the server, for students to put work in so the teacher can read it. I have done this for years with 10.4 server but I do not seem to be able to set it up so students can put work in the drop box now that I have upgraded to Leopard Server. I set the folder up in the group folder and give it write-only permission for the group. When the student puts the document in they get the message about not being able to see the work. They then they also get a series of other messages that read, "You may need to enter the name & password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named __.doc,"I click continue & get, "The item ___.doc contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?" & finally, "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."
So, how do I set up a drop box so that users who authenticate to the server are able to put items in the drop box. I was able to do this in Tiger.
I assume I am missing or forgetting some step. Help!

Create the folder in Public and Get Info on it.
    You should have Read/write.
    Set Staff to Write only
    Set everyone to Write Only.

  • Access Denied Error for Students with "Drop Box" or "Shared" Setting

Students see the "Upload and Manage File" link but get an access denied message when they click it. This happens if access for the student is set to either "Drop Box" or "Shared", but not "Edit" for that tab.
When I log in as a student to a course with a tab set to "Drop Box" access and right-click to get the URL for the "Upload and Manage" file link, it reads:

  • Combo drop box calculation?

I'm dont work with acrobat much so please excuse my lack of knoweldge. I have been reading all week and have learned a lot about performing calculations. I have no issues with creating simple add and subtract etc. I have been using mostly text feilds but thought this might be easier using a dropdown combo box. What I'm trying to do is have a a calculation for whichever choice is picked in the drop down. But I can't get it right. I own a window cleaning company and charge more money for multiple level homes. So I have set my drop box to list the choices of 2,3,4,5. I charge $50 per addtional level. So if I picked 2 the amount should equal $50.00. The price rises by $50 per level so if I pick 3 the price should be $100, 4 =$150 etc. But I can't figure out how to make the choices a set price. Right now all I can do is multiply or subtract, devide etc. Which is not working because if I choose 2, then the price =$100. If I choose 3 it =$150, 4=$200 etc. I have tried adding a subtraction calculation at the end of the script of -50 but that does not work as it automaticlly places -$50 in the results field which I don't want because I don't want the customer to think they are receiving a discount with that part of the service. I don't care if I have to manually place the numbers in the field. So if I should be doing this as a text field that would be ok also. I just can't figure out how to get this one working.

Last night I realised there's a small bug in the script I gave you. If you change the value of the combo from something else to zero, the price field will remain the same instead of changing back to zero (which is what I assume should happen). This will fix that:
    if (event.value!="0") {
        this.getField("price").value = (event.value-1)*50;
    } else this.getField("price").value = 0;

  • Access Denied when Student Uploads Course in Drop Box

All of a sudden we are getting access denied when a student tries to upload a course. We have not changed anything on our end. The tabs on the course page are set to drop box for student. The credentials sent over are:

The SPC16001002134 is the course identifier.
Access to the course for student is set to download:

    Hi,
I need a bit more information. Can you please post your site's domain so that I can inspect it? It appears you have replaced this with school.edu.

  • Can't copy files to network drop box

I'm running an Ubuntu server with netatalk (afp server) running and serving a couple afp shares. In one of the shares, I have a drop box directory that is owned by user "foo" and has group "bar". My Mac system username is "dude" and I also have a user named "dude" on the server. On the server, "dude" is a member of group "bar". The drop fox directory has permissions drwx-w----. The goal is to have a drop box that only "foo" on the server can read, but "dude" and other users in group "bar" can write to. I have other directories on the share with permissions drwxr-x--- foo:bar that "dude" and other users can read but not write to. In Mac OS X when I connect to the server as "dude" and try to copy a file to the drop box, I'm notified that I won't be able to see the copied file and then the copy fails with "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." The files I am trying to copy are owned by my user and I tried changing their permissions to rw-rw-rw but no luck. I also tried adding +x for the group on the dropbox. I checked the netatalk configuration and there's no permission mask being applied to the share.

I had the same problem, but I managed to fix it.
In WGM check that the sharepoint of your users Home Folder is set to owner root with Read and Write permissions.
I also created an ard_admin group in WGM and enabled open directory management on the client Macs. (Page 62 of the ARD admin Guide.)

  • Drop Box folder in the Public folder not showing on the network

    Hi everyone,
I am running a MacBook Pro 2010 running OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion. We have an office and multiple mac computers connected to our network. For us to transfer files we use the Drop Box folder inside the Public folder (We do not use the dropbox website/service). We would use the finder and click on the computer on the sidebar, open the Drop Box folder and drag files in with no hassel. However my Drop Box folder is not showing up when other users are trying to access my computer via the network.
My file sharing is on and I have attached an image with the settings I am using. I have compared these settings to other macs in the office that have a working Drop Box folder and they match. Hope you guys can help me.

  • Drop box set up

How do you set up a drop box over the internet? Do you put the other persons dhcp address in the server address box under +connect to server?+

Well, yes, but many more things are needed, like Forwarding Ports on Routers on both ends, Static Outside IPs or DynDNS/no-ip, & file Sharing enabled on both ends.
An Easier way would be to share this online DropBox...

  • Unable to see Shared Folder / Drop Box on wired LAN

I am unable to connect to another Mac on my wired LAN (Netgear wndr3700), and it is unable to connect to my machine. We cannot see each others’ Public Folder / Drop Box.
We can see each others Macs in the Shared section of the Finder’s sidebar, but trying to connect fails: “The server … may not exist or it is unavailable at this time…”
Both are running 10.6.4 Snow Leopard SL. No Windows machines on the LAN - so this should be AFP only.
We can see and connect to another Mac running 10.4.11 Tiger with no problem. BUT it is unable to connect to either 10.6.4 machine.
Firewall on both machines: On; File Sharing (AFP) set to “Allow incoming connections”; Stealth mode Enabled (toggling doesn’t change); “Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections” is Off; “Block all incoming connections” is Off. Some other apps and services are set to Block… (krb5kdc, numbed, smbd…) AppleFileServer is set to Allow.
Sharing: File Sharing Service only is On:
Hard Drive - Everyone - Read & Write
Users - Everyone - Read Only
~ (My Home Directory) - Everyone - Read Only
    Public - Everyone - Read & Write
Drop Box - Everyone - Write only
    Thanks for any suggestions.

It isn't directly related to the firewall, I'm having the same problem between two up to date machines, and to be sure, I have disabled the firewall on both. however, If i connect using the connect to server dialogue, I get through just fine. I believe it could be a dns resolution problem.
    strike that.
Just tested, check in advanced network settings, and if you have any wins servers listed, remove them.
krb5kdc needs to be allowed to accept connections, for me it popped up in little snitch when it was authenticating.

  • Why is my page set up drop down different from your illustration in help for printing background

    ''duplicate - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/830795''
The page set up drop down menu looks nothing like the illustration in help. It does not include a box to check for "print background. How do I print background

first, does it sound like I set it up correctly from what I wrote?
    Yes, all sounds correct.
Second, I heard that adding a b/g AX to the network will slow everything down to b/g speeds but I have also read that simply using B/G AX's to add speakers by joining the network will not slow down the N network....which is it?
The b/g AX devices will not slow down the network unless they are actively streaming AirTunes. Even then, audio streaming does not require a great deal of bandwidth, so for the most part, the effect would be negligible. Don't worry about it.
Is my network slowed down to b/g speeds because of my speaker set up or not?
The speed on your network will depend on a number of factors..are you downloading something while copying something else? Are you simply browsing? How far is the computer from the closest wireless access point?
You can check your current available bandwidth on your local network by doing the following:
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the Transmit Rate number.
    "g" wireless = 54 Mbps
    What do you see?
Oh, and by the way, I don't know if this matters, but while the time capsule serves as the main base station, it is in bridge mode because it is plugged into a 2wire gateway router.
If the Time Capsule is in bridge mode, it cannot act as the main base station. If you want, you could think of it that way if you are using the wireless on the Time Capsule as your preferred network, but the Time Capsule is not the "main" router.

  • Connecting a Power Mac G5 to an iMac G3 at Home - Drop Box Only?

    Hi folks,
I have a Powermac G5 and a iMac G3 running OSX 10.3.9 and 10.4.3 connected to each other via a network cable and a Modem/Router. I can see both computers from each other but all i can see is the "drop box", how can i set it up so i can see the whole computer (desktop and hard drive etc)? It seemed so much easier in OS9.
    Thanks.

  • Drop Box behaviour

I've just put a folder of photos in my wife's Drop Box.
When she tried to import the photos into iPhoto, all went swimmingly, except at the critical point, nothing happened.
It wasn't too hard to realise that what has happened is that the containing folder I dropped was given "Read" privilege in her Drop Box, but that none of the photos were - they were all "No Acccess".
Easily rectified, but is it anyone's opinion that this should be reported as a bug or do you think this (initially perplexing) behaviour is "correct"?
    I'd welcome your opinions.
    DerekH

The permissions of items added to the "Drop Box" normally won't be modified, with the exception of files copied over a network. Files added to a user's "Drop Box" locally *ie. one user to another) will retain their original permissions, so if the photos were originally "No Access" for users other than the owner, the recipient won't be able to access them, and this is normal behaviour. Normally, the onus is on the owner of the files to set permissions so that the recipient may access them.
What may not be normal in this case is that the permissions were "no access" at all - the default permissions for files created by a user in OS X usually allow at least "read" access for everyone, but that may depend on the source of the images...
If in fact you are referring to a situation where the files were transferred over the network, the ownership and permissions changes for items added to the "Drop Box" will only occurr if the folder appears as a "Drop Box" (ie. "write only") to the user adding the files. If the "Drop Box" folder's permissions have been changed, the permissions modification will not occur. Also, AFP / "Drop Box" behaviour has a history of being subject to glitches, and in earlier versions of "Tiger", there may have been an actual bug. If the problem is just a one-off glitch, restarting "Personal File" sharing, or sometimes rebooting, may be required for the situation to resolve itself.

  • No Drop Box in Several users public folders

    Hi All,
I'm running a largely mac based school network with 2 Xserves, One Snow Leopard Server and one Leopard Server which handles all the file sharing.
Several Users have come to me lately (About 6 I know of, out of approx 900) with no dropbox in their public folders. They had one previously but they seem to have disappeared. THe users with the disappearing drop boxes are all hosted on the Snow Leopard Server. And access their files with either Mac OS X Leopard, Windows XP, or windows 7.
My question is, is there a way to restore their drop boxes (I know I can go in as Root and do it, but im not sure if there are special settings etc on the drop box that wouldnt be applied if I did it manually)
Also if anyone knows what could cause the dropboxes to disappear that would be useful so I can prevent it in the future
    Thanks in Advance
    Timethyfx

Snap And like you said, I have both machines set up with exactly the same settings. Another bug or something I'm doing wrong? Please reply if you figure out the solution.

  • Added a BASE Station now Drop box's don't work for wireless users

We have a small business run out of a large home. Since Tiger came out we were using the drop box networking technology flawlessly. But recently we installed an Airport Base station replacing our Linksys router and now all the laptop users who connect wirelessly cannot be accessed remotely, we can use the drop box only with the people hardwired. Does anyone have any suggestions.

You might try making a Recovery set with the software included on your machine-though it may not work now either. Creating Recovery Media >> Windows 8

  • How can another user on my system share their document if they cannot access a public drop box, do not have an email account setup on the system and we don't want to use iwork?

Please help. My DS created a document under his login on my PowerBook and now, I cannot seem to access it. He doesn't have an email account of his own, I can't seem to save it as a public document in a drop box like I can from my own login and we do not want to use iwork. Is there a way to save it so that I can access it from my login to email to his teacher. I don't want to have to retype it into Pages under my login.

Save the document from his account to an external drive or thumb drive.
Set the permissions (using Finder > Get Info) for "Everyone" to Read and Write.
Your DS will likely be the owner of the file, so you may need his login password to change the permissions.
