Networking together with older Macs

I am running Tiger 10.4.3. I have in the past, with earlier versions of OSX, connected to computers in my household running 8.6. I had to do this when I changed over to my new computer, which at the time was using Jaguar. We got a DSL connection, so we decided to network the computers together. I cannot mount the disks from the older computers running 8.6. They show up in the Network, but when you click connect, we get the error message: This file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol. You cannot connect to it.
Do I have something set up wrong, or has apple made it impossible for a computer running Tiger to connect to a computer running 8.6? If they have made it impossible to do this, will it be possible for me to connect to my children's computers if I upgrade them to 9.1?

Is there a way for them to access my computer
without
having to enter an IP address each time?
This should be possible if you check the "Make
AppleTalk Active" option in Tiger's AppleTalk pane of
the appropriate network port in the Network system
preference. (Probably "Built-in Ethernet" if you use
a wired router.) This should 'broadcast' the Tiger
Mac's network name (set in the Sharing sys pref) to
the older Macs, allowing them to see that name in the
Chooser & connect to it in the traditional way.
We have AppleTalk active in Tiger. We can see the name of the Tiger computer in the chooser on the older computers, but if we try to connect that way, it loses the connection. If we enter the IP address, in the chooser, it works though.
One word of caution about this one way sharing: the
older OS versions don't know enough not to show files
on OS X Macs that they shouldn't. You should make
sure your kids don't access it using an admin account
name to avoid exposing more of the OS X Mac's hard
drive than necessary. Even if they just can access
their own account's home folder (recommended), public
folders, etc., a few normally invisible files will
show up, so make sure they understand they should not
disturb them.
They only have access to the public folder.
Can 9.1 communicate both ways?
Yes, as long as the enable file sharing over TCP/IP
box is checked in its File Sharing control panel.
(This is the checkbox missing in earlier versions.)
I have an old SuperMac S900 that doesn't officially
support anything later than 9.1 either (because it
uses a 680X0 processor). Its network name appears in
Tiger Finder's networked volumes list & I can connect
to its "available shares" without getting the
incompatible AFP version error or any other problems.
It is sometimes slow to show up on the network list
after starting up, & the same may apply for your
children's Macs, but if you give it 5 minutes or so,
they should appear & work just as well.
Well, that is good to know. My children all have power PC's PowerMac 5400 for most of them and one PowerMac 5500. Got them all at school auctions or they wouldn't have their own computers. : - )

  • CS6 compatibility with older macs (2007-2008), using Mavericks 10.9

I've heard about compatibility issues with older macs (2007-2008) when trying to run Adobe Creative Suite 6 Master Collection CS6 with Mavericks 10.9. Right now I'm using CS6 on my existing mid-2007, with Mountain Lion, -works great, and I'm worried if I upgrade to Mavericks there may be problems (based on FAQs)
I do lots of video editing/rendering and am looking into getting another back-up computer to speed up editing time. I'm looking at purchasing an older Apple Mac Pro Tower : 2008 : Xeon 8-core 2.8ghz : 16gb ram : 1TB hd. Will this run Adobe Creative Suite 6 Master Collection CS6 if I'm using Mavericks 10.9? If not, why?
Does the issue pertain to Mavericks with older macs, or is it CS6 with Mavericks, or what? Thanks!

  • Does version 3.0.1 allow sync with older Macs with PPC, or only with icloud?

Does version 3.0.1 allow sync with older Macs with PPC, or only with icloud?

    Thanks again John,
That is exactly what I mean, Im having problems giving planning users only calc access for Essbase. If I do that the users are not able top run scripts from the Planning app.
What is strange is that for a while it was working for some users, but not for others, now the only thng that works is to give users admin rights for Essbase server.

  • Networking imac with powe mac 604e - ethenet?

Hi i have an older power mac 604e computer
and i want to network it with a new
imac. Im trying to get my old files transferred onto my new computer. The old power mac has an old fashion scii connection and it does not have usb nor firewire so i thought the ethernet connection would be the best way.
this is just a one time transfer of data and i already have an ethernet cable. How do i set this up?
    thanks for the advice
    steven

The 604e computer has to be running Mac OS 9 or OS X to be able to talk to your iMac running Tiger. You can try to connect the two computers via an ethernet cable and then configure things as follows here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/os9xnet_nfilesharing.html
That page indicates that you can also get this to work with system 8.5 and 8.6 but I found those systems to drop connections alot. It may work without a crossover cable if the autosensing features of the ethernet ports work correctly. Lastly if you have an ethernet hub you can use that (with regular cables) instead of a crossover cable. Good luck and keep an eye on things as you may get drops anyway!

  • Toshiba TV with older Mac Mini

    Hi,
I was thinking of buying a HD TV by Toshiba that claims it can be connected to a Computer (makes no mention of Mac) using it’s “PC INPUT (15-PIN D-SUB)“ port. I’ve seen others mention using HDMI instead. What port on my older Mac Mini would I connect to? I think the video port is an HD monitor out.
Anyone have any experience with this? I wanted to use the TV as a monitor for the Mini some of the time.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, and so long for now, TOM

All minis have had some form of DVI up until the most recent model. DVI can provide either an analog or digital signal, and because of the ubiquity of VGA monitors the early minis came with a DVI to VGA adapter. The same DVA connection however can deliver a digital signal if the video hardware in the computer supports it, which the minis always have. Audio is not included in this type of connection however, although some TVs support using a combined HDMI and secondary audio input. Many times one HDMI is specifically grouped with a set of RCA inputs on the back for this purpose.
The big difference in how you connect is that most standard video devices sources have historically used an overscan method of image delivery. The image is actually larger than the screen area you will be presented, so the TV overlaps the outer part beyond the actual viewing area. This is largely an artifact of when CRT TVs had fairly widely varied true display areas, and even broadcast equipment couldn't provide a perfectly consistent image area. Because this practice is still used, most video input methods designed for 'dumb' video source like broadcast, cable, satellite, or set top boxes and players use an overscan method. Some TVs allow you to adjust this for the normal video type inputs, like composite, component, S-video, and HDMI. Computers have basically always used a pixel for pixel image rendering model, so VGA as an almost exclusively computer standard does not use overscan. Thus, when a TV has VGA, that input does not use an overscan method to display the image.

  • EA6500 has numerous "network devices" with no MAC

I have noticed from time to time I get many (15-20) "network devices" in the Device List with no MAC address. I notice this mainly when managing Parental Controls. I go and clean up the Device List and days later they reappear.
Another interesting thing is that the computer I am writing this with (through the router) does not show up in the Device List and I have an IP address from the router.
I have the latest firmware 1.1.28.146856.
Does anyone else see this on their EA6500?

There are a lot of people who reported similar or related cases that you have right now. From what I have read, they reset their routers back to factory settings. There is one who got to a work around by adding all of his devices to the DHCP Reservation List and the router is working fine after that.

  • Using iTunes store with older Mac

I have a 5 year old Mac PowerBook G4 10.4.11, and cannot seem to access iTunes store any longer. My older Itunes store has ceased to function and the new version will not work on older Mac (yay Apple!). The new version needs 10.5 to work, so I am left with a non-functional iTunes.
(I also just want to point out that 5 years old is NOT ancient for a home-based laptop.)
Is there any way I can continue to buy music at iTunes with a work-around, or a version of the current iTunes made for older Macs, or should I just shop elsewhere, at (ironically) more Mac-friendly online shops?
I specifically bought my machine planning to have a long life out of it and get good value, but now Apple are turning a really happy customer into a really seriously ****** one with this ploy to get me to update my machine, which I will not do unnecessarily.
A very unhappy, currently unable-to-buy-anything customer.
In the meanwhile, if anyone can help or give sound advice, besides moving to Ubuntu and avoiding Apple altogether henceforth, I'll be really appreciative.

    Lee888,
There has been some unhappiness about that lately, but indeed the Store will not work with old versions of iTunes.
But you can easily shop for music at the Amazon.com MP3 Store.  (If you are in the UK, use amazon.co.uk).
The Amazon store only needs a browser, so is unaffected by upgrade issues.  I guess it meets your definition of "(ironically) more Mac-friendly online shops."
Once you have the MP3s, simply add them to your iTunes library.

  • How do I power down my NAS together with my mac?

    Hi all,
Recently I bought a Seagate Business Storage NAS (2 bays, each 2 TB).
In the server settings, there is an option where I can shut down and start the NAS at a certain hour. Nevertheless this only shuts down the hard discs and not the whole NAS (it has a quite noisy fan).
Is there a possiblity where I can shut down the NAS together with my MacBook or at a certain time point that I can set via my mac?
    Thanks in advance
    Michaël Duwyn

Isn't this question better directed to a Seagate support forum?

  • IPad with iOS6 update not syncing with older macs

I downloaded iOS6 for ipad, but now cannot sync with my mac because I'm running an older version OS X (version 10.5.8).  Does anyone know a solution to this?  It's important to us that we can update the ipads as we use these in meetings.
    All the best,
    Tim

Apple's documentation is a bit confusing. iOS6 seems to require iTunes 10.6.3 which you can download here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575
and which should run on Leopard. However it still may not be possible to sync with this - the Tech Specs for the iPhone 5, http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html , say
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
iTunes 10.7 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
I would suggest downloading iTunes 10.6.3 - it's free - and seeing how far you can get with it. If you can't sync you will need to upgrade your Mac at least to Snow Leopard.

  • Icloud set up help...on windows 7 with older macs in house

    Hello
Thanks for any help...I am trying to get my photos backed up to the cloud.
I hope I got this right
I went to sign up and it said I needed at least a windows PC or a mac that is a later version OS
    than my 10.6.8 and 10.5.0
does this mean i can do the initial set up on my pc and then use it on my 10.5.O mac to upload my pictures to
the cloud...most my photos are on 10.5.0 mac mini...
OR do i have to have a different icloud account for mac and windows?
Thanks I am so confused as to how to save my photos before I get a new mac and time capsule...
i lost them all before and thankfully they were backed up to a drive...
I want to secure these photos the best way I can as so many loved ones have passed away...
Thanks...any help would be so appreciated...I don't mind paying for extra cloud storage if i know those
    photos are safe...
and that I can set up on windows 7 and use it on my older macs
    Rose

iCloud doesn't backup your photos, so there'd be no point trying to use that.
Use Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive.
Dropbox works on OS X 10.5.8 at least, so that may be your best option.

  • IPad with older Mac?

    Hi,
My Dad ordered an iPad (hasn't arrived yet) and I was going to help him set it up, but the tech specs says it needs at least OS X 10.5.8 and I have 10.4.11.
Can I transfer files without syncing it with iTunes? Besides not being able to sync, is there anything else I can't do? Can I at least charge it with my Mac's USB port?
    thanks
    Jeff

No you can not transfer files without syncing it to I Tunes. When you get it, you have to set up the I pad thru I tunes. If you have an I tunes account, you can go to another computer, sign into i tunes with your account. Then sign back out. It is pain, but that is the only way unless you upgrade. The charging question, I am not for sure.

  • 802.1X wireless network problems with Intel Mac

To login to the wireless network at my school I have to use an 802.1X connection authenticating with TTLS, TLS, EAP-FAST and PEAP protocols.
This works intermitently. Some days my MacBook logs on quickly with no problems at all but most days it has a self assigned IP address and I can't use the internet. My friend also uses a MacBook, which acts in the same way. Some days she manages to get on, some days I can get on and some days we are both on together. The problem is really irritating!! We get no support from the techs as we are the only Mac people in the school. The rest of the staff have PCs. The techs are just trying to use this issue to justify why letting people lease Macs is a problem and stop other staff from leasing them in the future.
I did find a solution at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=425113&tstart=0
but this was written in 2006 and I wonderered if this was still valid.
    Can anyone help? please???

I am a tech at our school and we have the same problems. still trying to find a permanent solution!
If you turn airport off, then turn on again, (from system prefs > network) does it change from "self-assigned IP Address" to "Authenticated via PEAP)?
the macs are more and more popular at our school, so its becoming more and more of an issue.
    cheers,
    Harry

  • Airport Express with Older Mac G5

    Hi -
    This is my configuration:
    Brand New Mac Mini 2012
    AirPort Extreme (6 months)
Brand New Comcast/Xfinity gateway (not sure what brand they private labeled)
The good news - everything works great. (I have a double NAT error message but Comcast does not allow you to put theirs in bridge mode and I want a guest network so I just ignored the error).
I have a new roommate moving in with two comptuers, an older computer Power Mac G5 Dual Core and a 2011 Mac Mini. On the G5, there does not appear to have any way to connect to the wireless signal. I did some research online and I know that there is an option to install a card for it. I also looked at USB receivers.
My question is this: I just bought an AirPort Express because I wanted to extend my wireless network to them when they move in (it's a big, older building so I wanted to make sure that they had a good signal). Can I configure the AirPort Express and then move it to the G5 and connect it with an ethernet cable, giving that machine access to the network? And the AirPort Express will still just send a good wireless signal out for his other Mac Mini?
    Will that work?
    Thanks for any help.
    Cindy

Can I configure the AirPort Express and then move it to the G5 and connect it with an ethernet cable, giving that machine access to the network?
Yes. The Ethernet port is enabled when the AirPort Express is configured to "exend" a wireless network.
And the AirPort Express will still just send a good wireless signal out for his other Mac Mini?
    Yes.
Both answers above assume that the AirPort Express will be located where it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.

  • Backing up iPad 4 with older mac

Are there any options to backing up an iPad 4 to an older (G-4) Mac?  The only option that I have been shown is to buy a newer computer or to use the cloud.  This is for my 80 y.o. mother and we really don't want to buy her another computer but it is nice to back up locally without ultimately paying to use the cloud.  Suggestions?  I don't have her products in front of me but she has an iMac desk lamp version running the max OS 10.5.8.

The minimum requirements to sync and backup an iPad 4 would be Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on the Mac. You need an Intel Mac as well. your mother will have to backup to iCloud or upgrade the Mac. You get 5GB of storage for free with iCloud and purchased content does not count against the storage.

  • Iphoto will not sync with older mac?

I have an older ibook, G3, with just a CD drive. I am running tiger 10.4.10 and iphoto 2.0. I understand that in order to sync photo's I need the latest version of iphoto which is included with ilife 08. Here is my problem, ilife 08 will not run on a G3 mac! Plus I don't have a DVD drive to instal it? So ... How in the heck can I get the latest version of iphoto on an older ibook?

Create a folder in the location of your choice - named by whatever you choose but if you want to have an Album or multiple Albums of sorts, create these folders in the Pictures folder in your Home folder/directory - which should be the same location as your iPhoto library location.
Export the chosen pictures from iPhoto to the created folder or folders placed in your Pictures folder.
Under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes at Sync Photos From, select the Pictures folder which should be available via the pop-up menu.
    Select - Selected Folders.
The folder or multiple folders you created within your Pictures folder should be available in the window below. You can select each folder or a chosen folder. The number of pictures available within each folder should be available to the right of the folder name.
Select Sync and you are done.
To add additional photos to your iPhone, add chosen photos to the existing folder or folders created in your Pictures folder or create a new folder. This is the manual way of creating albums within iPhoto but serves the same purpose.
